his golf season is going to be a great season. I can feel it! So what makes this season any different from other seasons, you ask? Well first of all, I took a lesson over the winter at an indoor facility and the results are already looking very promising based on the couple of rounds I’ve gotten in before the Spring weather got cold again. Secondly, I got fitted for new golf clubs with custom shafts, irons and woods (both different brands) suited for my swing, ball flight, and club head speed as well as a new putter, so I am looking forward to seeing the additional yards and lower scores they will be yielding me. Sorry Kiman brothers, I will earn the fewer strokes you guys will be wanting to steal from me! The theme for this first issue of 2016 is about getting fitted for golf clubs. Playing fitted clubs is the best way to get more distance and lower your scores. In this issue we feature a couple of fitting sources such as Club Champion, a business solely dedicated to fitting golfers using their proprietary technology and intensively trained Master Fitters and Builders as well as the Fitting Lab at Galloping Hill Golf Course whose Master Fitter, using his state of the art technology, who will also fit clubs to your swing. Your local golf store may be able to fit you as well. I would encourage you to research all resources and choose the best one suited to what you are hoping to accomplish to improve your golf game. The key is to get fitted! Speaking of the Kiman, last season I mentioned, in this column, that one of the best ways to improve your golf game is to organize a group of your friends to play once a week in a season long, friendly tournament so that you will keep your game sharp while enjoying the camaraderie that golf affords all of us. The group I have been playing with, these past few years, has grown from just a foursome many years ago to over twenty golfers with usually twelve to sixteen playing each week. After playing a certain number of required rounds, a handicap is established for each of the participants and the pursuit to become the low gross and low net winner for that season begins. The winners’ names are then engraved on the official Kiman perpetual trophy for all to see as it is displayed at the Kiman’s home golf course. The winners also receive individual trophies to display at their home or office. Therefore, I’d like to congratulate the 2015 Kiman Low Gross winner, John Feindt and the Low Net winner, Mike Schreck. Both are legends among all of the Kiman participants! Stop slow play and may your lies be good ones!

Premium Club Fitting = Instant Success 8 Out of 9 Golfers Added up to 21 Yards Off the Tee By Leonard Finkel

ith advances in golf club technology, most golfers could easily hit the ball further and more accurately. Yet a Golf Magazine study found that 90% of U.S. golfers may be playing with improperly fit clubs. A Golf Digest study found that 8 out of 9 Club Champion custom fit golfers lowered their score by as much as 6 strokes per round and added up to 21 yards off the tee. Club Champion is the country’s
premier club fitter, builder, and retailer of the best brands in golf. The company delivers a Tour-quality fitting that produces longer, more accurate shots, with a nearly 100% satisfaction rate. Their approach is unbiased; no specific vendor is promoted. The only goal - find 6
the best combination of components to lower your scores. Ranked by Golf Digest among the 100 Best Club Fitters three times in a row, Club Champion has a unique coupling system that allows them to combine any head and shaft together, so golfers hit the precise combination to be custom built for them. Most golf stores use fitting carts provided by club manufacturers and while these carts offer options, golfers are unable to mix and match from different carts to determine ideal combinations. Club Champion offers hundreds of shafts and many are not available through most other fitters and retailers. Former PGA Tour player Jay Williamson says, “I had access to every brand of shaft and head, but I never understood what they did for me. I didn’t have the opportunity to experiment like I do at Club Champion. They bring the same level of service players receive on Tour, including the newest heads and shafts and the most advanced fitting technology. If you are a committed golfer at any level, I highly recommend it.” Incidentally, Club Champion was able to add an average of

15 yards to Jay’s driving statistics. Being a golf writer, I‘ve experienced many fittings, but this experience was totally different. My driver picked up an average of 24 yards. I added 15 yards to my irons and reduced dispersion by approximately 30%. It’s easier hitting greens with a 7-iron than a 5-iron. Frank D’Angelo, (Malvern, PA) has been going to Club Champion for four years. He was fitted for Mizuno MP 25 irons. “I was a 12 index before I went to Club Champion and I’ve shaved about six shots off my handicap. It’s a premium store and you get premium service,” he gushed. Club Champion stands out because they actually build clubs in-house, to exacting, unrivaled tolerances. Variables such as swing weight, length, lie and flex definitely alter performance. The experience and know-how in combining these intricate parts together is what separates Club Champion from its competition. says, “In our experience, Club Champion represents the finest in the art of club fitting and building. We are confident that Club Champion will fit, service and support the most discerning golfers at the highest possible levels.” While anyone will benefit from premium club fitting, it is for the golfer who wants optimized performance. When Club Champion says you’ll add 20 yards off the tee, they mean it. Whether you are looking to buy new clubs or fix your current set, premium club fitting is the answer. Fitting prices range from $80 for wedges to $350 for an entire bag. The company has 15 studios located nationally including northern New Jersey (Hackensack) /NYC, Philadelphia and Boston. Galloping Hill Golf Course Completes Renovations for New Jersey State Open
T
he transformation of Galloping Hill Golf Course by Rees Jones and his team in preparation for the 2016 NJSGA State Open has been in the making for quite some time thanks to the Union County Board of Freeholders and KemperSports, which manages the course. The golf course was renovated with the addition of at least 10 new championship tees, new drainage and two new green complexes on the fifth and 16th holes. The New Jersey State Golf Association, the second oldest state golf association in the U.S., had long considered bringing the state’s biggest golf tournament to a county-operated course. “With the growth of public golf in recent years, and the popularity of national championships being held at public courses, we felt that we had a tremendous opportunity to work with Galloping Hill in 2016,” said NJSGA spokesman Steve Foehl. “With the improvements to the golf course by Rees Jones, and the vision of Union County and KemperSports, we had a committed team of people to create a memorable and successful championship. The NJSGA is excited about the event.” Golf course architect Rees Jones, famously nicknamed “The Open Doctor,” is renowned for his work on prominent U.S. Open and Major Championship courses, such as Bethpage State Park’s Black Course, Hazeltine National, Medinah Country Club, East Lake Country Club, and Congressional Country Club among others. Jones’ redesign at Galloping Hill stretches the existing 6,700-yard layout to nearly 7,000 yards while restoring some of the original shot values and sight lines from architect Willard Wilkinson’s initial plans. Galloping Hill Golf Course opened in 1928 and represents one of Willard Wilkinson’s original designs. Early in his career, Wilkinson spent time working with legendary golf course architects A.W. Tillinghast and Donald Ross, known for their work on major championship golf courses, before establishing his own golf course design firm in 1924. Galloping Hill GC has been characterized by its natural terrain of rolling hills and valleys, often referred to as "The Hill", and has a reputation as one of the most challenging courses in its area. Galloping Hill’s 18-hole par 71 golf course spans 6,717 yards from the championship tees. A few years ago, Union County and KemperSports undertook the multi-million dollar renovation project to Galloping Hill Golf Course, which includes a new 45,000 square-foot clubhouse, a performance lab, a 50-stall driving range and a 40,000 square-foot practice facility featuring chipping greens, putting greens, practice bunkers and a nine-hole practice course. Under the management of KemperSports, Galloping Hill Golf Course has become known as the “Home of Public Golf in New Jersey.” “We are proud to (have) partnered with Union County and Rees Jones Golf Design on the significant renovations that (have) taken place at Galloping Hill Golf Course,” said KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner. “The renovations (have) improved the overall playability of the course while also bringing added shot values to the classic design.” JULY 11, 2016 - JULY 13, 2016 10

PUBLISHER’S PICKS Products We Know You’ll Like! (Or We Won’t Write About Them)
GET FITTED FOR YOUR GOLF CLUBS CLUB CHAMPION I love when I’m playing golf with someone who hits an errant shot only to blame his driver or his 5-wood, or even his putter. Someone inevitably says, “It’s not the equipment, it’s the golfer!” Then everyone laughs...But, hold on. That guy is not completely wrong! Studies have found that golf clubs fit with the proper shafts and club heads based on that person’s club head speed and swing path could yield a golfer straighter shots and up to 20 more yards for each of their clubs! Are you still laughing? Whenever a friend of mine tells me he is planning to buy a new set of golf clubs, I always suggest that he gets fitted for the clubs. Would you buy a car without sitting in it first to make sure you have enough leg and head room? Would you buy a bed without checking out its firmness to determine whether or not it will be comfortable to sleep on? So, why would you buy a set of clubs without knowing whether the shafts are the right length and flex stiffness and that the club head has the correct setup for your swing? Many of the big box golf stores, as well as your local professional, are able to work with you to determine which is the best “off the shelf” set of golf clubs for you. The better “fitters” will have you hit various sets of clubs from various manufacturers into a simulator and get your spin rate and trajectory based on the statistics provided by the launch monitors. This process is definitely better than buying a set of clubs because Jordan Spieth or Dustin Johnson plays them only to find out that you’re having trouble hitting them, your scores are declining instead of improving, and you are now stuck with a $700 or $800 set of irons that are basically, not only ruining your game, but also your desire to play! Club Champion is a company, with locations throughout the country, that not 16

only has access to every golf club manufacturer in the business, but also every golf shaft manufactured as well. They have a patented mechanism that has the ability to interchange any golf club head with any golf club shaft in order to determine which shaft and club head will provide you with the best results for your swing - ball flight, spin rate, and distance - when hitting a golf ball. I recently took the Club Champion challenge and was I ever impressed. The process took about three and a half hours for a full set fitting. You begin by having an informal discussion with your Master Fitter and Builder (Dan was my Master Fitter and Builder) where you are asked a number of questions about your game and what you are expecting to accomplish from getting
fitted for new clubs. He will also ask you if you have any cost limitations so that he could provide you with the best shaft and club head based on your budget. Dan then began his analysis of my swing by having me hit my 6-iron into their simulator so that a benchmark could be established for my swing speed, ball flight, ball spin, etc. based on the current clubs I am playing. Armed with this data, Dan then selected a shaft, attached a club head to it using their patented shaft and club head interchangeable mechanism, and had me hit balls. This process continued for a while as Dan continually interchanged shafts, while recording data for each of the shafts, until he found the proper shaft that he felt would enable me to hit straighter shots. Using this

“best shaft”, he then interchanged a number of club heads (Mizuno, Taylor Made, Callaway, Ping, Wilson, Tour Edge, etc.) and had me continue to hit balls until he found the best club head (combined with the “best shaft”) that improved the data from my initial swing analysis as determined by my current set of clubs. Club Champion has every club head available on the market to determine which is the best for you. Once he found the best shaft and club head for me, we progressed to the 3-wood. I first hit my current 3-wood so he could collect and analyze my swing data. Once a “best shaft” was determined for my woods, Dan interchanged the shaft with a number of 3-wood club heads, from their extensive arsenal of club manufacturers, until he found the best fairway wood model for me. This fitting process continued with me hitting my Driver in order to determine the best Driver for me as well. I then progressed to the final step, the putter. Putter fitting is not as intensive as the irons and woods fitting. Basically, I was asked to putt from perticular location to a hole while a machine collected data on my take away and follow through. Fortunately for me, the Bettinardi putter, Dan put in my hands, worked light years better than the putter I am currently using. The precision milled Bettinardi putter provided more top roll, thus reducing any skipping my current putter was producing, while the ball rolled smoother as I was dropping ball after ball into the cup. Dan could have bent the putter head in order to provide the same results if necessary. However, the stock Bettinardi putter did the trick and I was sold. Once I chose the grips I preferred, the selected components would be assembled by hand in Club Champion’s facility by their master builders. The clubs are built to the tightest club specifications determined in the fitting. This usually takes 7-10 business days. By the way, the clubs purchased from Club Champion come with a lifetime fit guarantee. If they should ever fail to meet your expectations, you are welcome to go back so they can make it right by fixing or replacing your clubs. As of this writing, I have not received my clubs. However, I promise to report in the next Publisher’s Picks the results I am attaining with golf clubs custom fit to my 2016 ISSUE 1

A BETTER BALL? SNELL GOLF NEW GOLF BALL ALERT! With more than 25 years in golf ball research and development, 40 U.S. granted patents and a successful background in plastics engineering, Dean Snell is considered to be one of the foremost golf ball authorities. In March 2015, he founded Snell Golf, a golf ball company committed to developing premium golf balls at affordable, direct pricing. After a successful first year marked by positive media reviews and exceeded sales expectations generated by a loyal customer base, Snell Golf is primed for a breakthrough year. After hearing that Dean Snell designed the Titleist ProV1, Professional, Tour Prestige, HP2 Tour and Distance as well as the TaylorMade Noodle, Burner, and RocketBallz, I had to learn more about the Snell Golf ball. A member of Ping’s product development staff told me that when they tested every golf ball available to see how they’d perform with Ping irons and woods, Snell Golf beat out every golf ball tested, including the ProV1! The Snell Golf ball comes in two models; My Tour Ball and Get Sum. My Tour Ball is their 3-piece, tour caliber golf ball engineered to provide outstanding tee to green performance for the better golfer with the higher swing speeds. It’s their version of the ProV1. I tested the Get Sum, 2 piece ball designed for straighter control and a soft feel around the green for the average golfer. I LOVED THIS BALL! I was getting better distance than the 2 piece ball I had been using and I loved the feel of the ball as it left my club head. This ball sells for only $20.99 per dozen. My Tour Ball sells for only $31.99 per dozen. Both prices include free shipping (and possibly no sales tax). You can only purchase them on line at www.snellgolf.com. TRY THESE BALLS!

C of the Pocono’s crown-jewel is an 18-hole, Fazio designed course featuring some of the most challenging and picturesque holes in the entire Northeast. But don’t be fooled by the yardage. This course puts a premium on accuracy, not driving distance. Encompassing just shy of 1,000 acres, on only two occasions will you see another hole other than the one you’re playing. Instead, you’ll enjoy abundant wildlife and plenty of privacy. But be prepared for a challenge. CCP’s signature, par-four 16th hole covers 420 yards, while the tee box – elevated 150 feet above the fairway – offers one of the most spectacular vistas you’ll ever see.

It Pays To Get Your Golf Outing Off To The Right Start! Use A Consultant To Take Your Event To The Next Level. by Phil Immordino
T
hank you so much for helping us with our event," the magic words that all golf event planning consultants live for. But before those words can come, the big question planners and organizers have to ask themselves is, "Should we use a golf event consultant to assist us with our event?" There are more than 1 million golf outings in this country every year, the average event raises $5,000 and my guess is that every event coordinator has asked this question at one point or another. Golf tournaments and events are not brain surgery yet at the same time they are a lot of work and there are many tricks of the trade that are learned through experience. Someone needs to have the ideas to enable them to do the work. Who will that be staff, volunteers or consultants? Many groups produce successful golf events without consultants and many groups produce successful events with consultants. A recent survey done by the Golf Tournament Association of America (GTAA) showed that the average event that does not use a consultant raises $5,000, yet the average event using a consultant raises $10,000. Based on these results, why wouldn't every event use a consultant or planner? Misconception of Costs The belief that golf event consultants cost you money is a common misconception. Based on the results of the survey, consultants actually pay for themselves. In more cases than not, a golf consultant or event planner can save an organization money and assist them with raising more money than if they would not have used a consultant at all. For example, ALS in Phoenix, Ariz., has produced an annual golf tournament for the past five years, raising between $50,000 and $100,000. For their 2005 event they hired a local consultant. The consultant was able to review the agreement with the golf course, make 2016 ISSUE 1
some changes and save ALS more than $10,000 while raising the level of their event. That covered the consultant's fee and then some. Selecting The Right Consultant When you choose a consultant, you must be aware that there are good ones and bad ones. Picking the wrong one can ruin your event and frustrate your committee. Here are some things to consider and questions to ask your prospective consultant: w List of past clients and references. Call them and ask how their experiences were working with the consultant. w What is their philosophy in producing an event? w What services do they provide? w What is their fee? w How responsive are they to you? Once you have selected a consultant, make sure to have an agreement in writing that includes everything the consultant will do. Do not pay the consultant the whole fee in advance. Pay them based on certain signposts or critial points of accomplishments, or on monthly installments, with the major portion of the fee paid after the event completion. One of the best event management companies, located in NJ, is The Golf Management Group. They have a reputation for being thorough and innovative and have had great success with increasing profits for numerous organizations. They can be reached at 908-953-9852. Good Luck! Phil Immordino is chairman of the Golf Tournament Association of America (GTAA) and speaks on this subject throughout the US.

The PGA of America To Host 98th PGA Championship Baltusrol Golf Club July 28-31, 2016
S
ince its inception in 1916, the PGA Championship has evolved into one of the world’s premier sporting events. Each summer, one of the nation’s leading golf facilities hosts golf’s best professionals as they compete for the Rodman Wanamaker Trophy and a major championship title. The PGA Championship was born in the mind of department store owner Rodman Wanamaker, who saw the merchandising possibilities in a professional golfers’ organization. The PGA Championship is the annual “Super Bowl” for all of the male members of the Professional Golfers Association of America. All PGA Golf Professionals have an equal chance to earn a spot in their flagship event by qualifying any one of the many qualifying rounds held leading up to the PGA Championship. Who knows, maybe the local PGA Professional at your club will be one of this year’s qualifier so you can go to Baltusrol Golf Club to cheer him on! So, who is the PGA of America? One of the world’s largest sports organizations, the PGA of America and its 28,000 men and women Professionals teach and grow the game every day, making golf more appealing to the millions who play it while working to attract many more who have expressed interest in trying the game or returning to it. Celebrating its Centennial in 2016, the PGA continues to lead the multi-billion dollar golf industry. The PGA also conducts some of golf ’s premier championships, including the PGA 22
Championship, Ryder Cup, Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, and partners with the LPGA and KPMG, a leading tax, audit and tax advisory firm, to conduct the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. The PGA’s origin can be traced to January 17, 1916, when a group of New York area golf professionals, accompanied by several prominent amateur golfers and members of the media, attended a luncheon in the former Wanamaker Store in New York City. The group was invited by the Taplow Club, an informal business group begun by entrepreneur Rodman Wanamaker, bearing the nickname after a home he leased near London on Taplow Court. Wanamaker, heir to one of the country’s largest merchandise empires, enlisted golf professional and employee, Tom McNamara of Brookline, Mass., as coordinator. Among those in attendance were legendary golfer Francis Ouimet and acclaimed golf course designer A.W. Tillinghast. The purpose of the gathering was to discuss forming a national golf organization, which would promote interest in the game and help elevate the vocation of the golf professional. Wanamaker, who viewed the public’s growing enthusiasm for golf as the beginning of a national trend, promoted the idea of an association to help accelerate the growth of the game. On April 10, 1916, the PGA of America was formed in New York City, electing 78 members. The PGA established two primary objectives, which today still drive its efforts: Serve our members and grow the game.

New Exotics EX9 Series Feature Full-Speed Impact Design Brace yourself for impact!
T
he Tour Edge Exotics new EX9 product line features Full-Speed Impact technology to maximize clubhead speed by designing new combinations of technology to achieve explosive impacts on every hit. The EX9 drivers optimize weight distribution with a subtle sole design, and are available in four clubheads (Tour model 9° and 10°, standard model 10° and 12°). Each head features adjustability options including loft, lie angles, and an interchangeable sole weight which is positioned for ideal ball flight. The drivers encompass ideal sound, exceptional control, and explosive distance culminating in the best Exotics driver series ever. “On the new EX9 models we moved the center of gravity much deeper in the head for super high MOI numbers,” said David Glod, president and founder of Tour Edge Golf. “This translates into our lowest spinning drivers to date and a greatly increased sweet zone for longer drives from all areas on the face.” The 2016 line up also includes the EX9, EX9 Tour and EX9 Long 3 fairway woods, ensuring that players of all levels can fit into an Exotics wood. Throughout the wood collection, the SlipStreamÔ sole features shorter ‘waves’ from front to back, dramatically reducing the amount of turf interaction on every shot. Two hybrids complete the wood collection, EX9 and EX9 Tour highlighted by technology producing legendary performance. Three Exotics iron sets encourages players to demo each to find out which one is best for you; EXd irons, EXi irons, or the CB PRO Tungsten irons. The Exotics CB PRO Tungsten irons are the most technologically advanced Exotics iron ever, combining hollow construction with progressive tungsten sole weighting designed for players’ adamant about forgiveness, control, and distance. EXd irons are all about distance with forgiveness. The irons feature the largest free standing face with the deepest undercut cavity manufactured by Exotics, and flex more at impact for profound distance making the game more fun. EXi irons focus on playability with distance. The Exotics EXi irons feature a more traditional shape with less offset, engineered for maximum feel and control with distance. Exotics golf clubs are available in the most popular shafts on the market, come with a lifetime warranty, and a 30-day play guarantee.
