Today, “groggy” means to feel dazed, weak or unsteady - usually from sleeplness, an illness, intoxication or a blow to the head. The word grog comes from a nickname which was given to Admiral Vernon, the British Commander and Chief of the West Indies - he was called “Old Groggy” because of the cloak of grogram that he always wore. In 1740, Old Grog ordered that the sailors’ daily ration of rum be diluted wwit water. The sailors called the watered-down mixture “grog” after Old Grog. By exension, if a sailor who drank too much of this diluted mixture was said to be “groggy”
May ye anchor be tight, an ye cork be loose. May ye rum be spiced and ye compass stay true. It’d be Rumday nigh n time for the rum review. Tucked away in the southern countryside of the island of Barbados, sits on what once was a sugar plantation. Rum is made from a ferment of molasses and proprietary yeast cultures, at the Foursquare Rum Distillery. It is distilled in a triple column or combination pot/ column stills on site. While they’re still is sugar cane growing on the estate most of the molasses is imported from Guyana and the yeast used universally
for all the rums produced is imported from south Africa. R.L. Seale produces more that just the Foursquare Spiced and Doorly’s rum, in fact I was surprised to find that I’ve had one of those produced there before. The Real McCoy, Mahiki, Old Brigand, Bristol, and Rum 66 are but a handful of what they produce at the Foursquare estate. All of their products are all natural and never have any additions like cane syrup or flavorings added before being bottled and sealed for sale. What you taste is all made in the barrels.
A golden amber in color spirit rests in me large snifter. I’m letting it breath for a few before going into the nose and taste. While I wait I swirled this spiced rum around to let the crests form. From the crest thick legs hang before being released and retreating back to the spirit below. I get the scents of anise, clove, and allspice with notes of orange and citrus at first take. With second n third I noticed the aromas of faint vanilla and honey. The aromas are not really intense like you would expect in a commercially sold spiced rum sold in every package store across the world.
recommend mixing with cola, soda and premuim ginger ale/beer for that next level taste. So that’s it for this week mates. Due to circumstances of health this last week I can’t promise a review next week on something new, but bear with me I’ll return the following week with a new one. The taste is not what I would expect in a spiced rum but from the nose it doesn’t surprise me. Subtle clove, cinnamon, and allspice with a light hint of vanilla in the background. Though it’s not a sweet rum I still get the taste of raw honey that rides with each sip to the throat. There it turns to a warm pepper that subsides quickly. In the aftertaste I got the taste of light smoke with the likes of chicory or mesquite. It is said to enjoy this one neat but I found that if mixed in a Mojito it is very good. I’m convinced that a premium spirit such as this will bring your cocktails up to a level that will knock your patrons socks off. I Captain Jameson von Greywolfe
The Minrothad Guilds ◄ To the left you will see a the cover art from the Dungeon and Dragons; Gazetteer series. Even in the 80’s with the high fantasy of Dungeon and Dragons, even they knew there was place for pirates in their never ending game and stories.The Minrothad Guilds was the 9th in the Gazetteer series and written by Deborah Christian and Kim Eastland; published by TSR in 1988. When it was released it was one of the biggest books in the Gazetteer series.
The Minrothad Guilds are fictional seaborne merchants, and in the book it covers life, society, and politics in their lands. The Minrothad Guilds describes the great trading guilds of the D&D world and their island homes. The 32-page “Player’s Booklet” outlines the operation of the guilds, including their laws and rigid caste system. The 64-page “Dungeon Master’s Booklet” covers the guilds’ overall history, government, and relationship with pirates. The gazetteer also describes trade in the D&D world, and includes rules for adaptation to AD&D
Brief History of the D&D Minrothad Guild and the Dread Sea. Even if you never planned to play the game, there was plenty of through that went into creating this story line and I could be made into an interesting show or movie. The elven inhabitants are believed to have lived on the islands since the time before they were separated from the northern land mass. The first humans are thought to have arrived on the islands much later, and are popularly believed to have been led by Minroth. Alphatian settlers arrived around AC 250, and after an initial period of hostilities, merged with the local human population, then shortly after formed trade agreements with the elves of Alfeisle. This accord is the
beginning of the Minrothad Guilds. Halfling slaves were brought by the Alphatians in the third century. In the fifth century a plague of lycanthropy swept the islands, eventually the elves brought it under control, but at the cost of reducing the human population considerably. Shortly afterward the Halfling slaves revolted and formed a free society on Open isle. Dwarves fleeing Glantri in the ninth century settled on Fortress Isle. Guild master Kitrina Meditor passed the isolation Act near the close of the ninth century. Although designed to protect Minrothad’s interests, it resulted in a stagnation of the economy. In AC 980 a second plague of lycanthropy spread, though it was swiftly brought under control. In AC 991 the current guild master rescinded the Isolation Act, resulting in a boom in the economy.�

Born in Ireland in 1530, Grace O’Malley was born to a wealthy nobleman, who’s wealth and shipping business he left to her upon his death. From a young age O’Malley would have been familiar with sailing and shipping, having traveled with her father to various countries. The O’Malley clan would also impose taxes on all trade and fishing in their waters, including English ships, much to the chagrin of the English to the point that they labeled the O’Malleys pirates. O’Malley would go on to sail the seas surrounding Ireland and plundering various castles and trade routs, but also assisting the English in some cases. She would lead a contingent of Irish and Scottish mercenaries as she continued pirating, as well as sailing from various strongholds along the Irish and Scottish coasts, extorting traders by levying various taxes and payments for safe passage. Failure to do so would result in the “seizure” of goods.

O’Malley would die peacefully in 1603, and would be immortalized in Irish folklore as a woman who went against the norms of the day, and taking on many roles and challenges that were only expected or reserved for men. Legends of Grace O’Malley’s exploits would pass into legend with the aid of traditional folk songs and tales, recounting mythical and real events that would bolster her reputation, from battles with Corsairs to a personal meeting with Queen Elizabeth I

Beaches, Bonfires, & Music, AND MORE....(stay tuned!) Dance by the light of the moon to the enchanting music of the Naughty Princess on the beach of Siren Island! A late night Costume Party for MerFans and MerFolk (must be 18 years old to attend). A magical evening for mermaids and pirates alike! Shuttle rides from Lake Arvesta Farms parking to the island begin at 8:00pm, with featured music beginning at 10:00pm. (Costumes are encouraged but optional!)

This year, Mermaid MegaFest is introducing an unbridled jubilee for sirens, the Island Moon Party, to our event line-up! A magical costume-themed dance party for mermaids and pirates alike - for adults only (must be 18+). The outdoor venue is a private one-acre island, located just outside of South Haven. Guests will arrive at the Lake Arvesta Conference Center, with ample parking available - or better yet, take the shuttle from designated downtown/hotel locations. Enjoy watching the performing mermaids swim in the Freshwater Mermaid Tank - a new mobile 4,000-gallon aquarium - while checking in! A short char-à -banc ride will transport you deep into the woodlands to a remote private lake. A walking bridge connects you to Siren’s Island - the site of an enchanted evening. A sandy beach area covers half of the island, so you may wish to bring your folding beach chair or towel. Picnic tables and chairs can be found on the island as well. Swimming is discouraged, so best to leave your tails at home - it is difficult to dance while wearing it anyway. Like all sirens, your tail sheds and legs appear when you are on land. A cash bar awaits, featuring mermaid nectar and pirate brew (wine & beer), for those aged 21 and over. Id and wristbands are required to enter the bar area, and all alcohol must be consumed within the perimeter. And music! Not your traditional cover band here - you will be mesMERized by the spellbinding sounds emanating under the guidance of the DJ Naughty Princess!
