Years Had to believe that it has been five long years and 60 issues of Great lakes Pirates Magazine. It has been a struggle this past year, that is no lie. For those that do not know, the magazine was started in 2015 after a spark of inspiration. Something to keep in mind, this magazine is nearly fully free for both readers and advertisers. I work 40 plus hours a week, and try my best to put each issue together. I have had great help with articles from a range of individuals and I thank them for doing what they do on their own. With coming issues we hope to bring back beloved articles such as Pirate of the Month and Mermaid of the Month, possibly with some new twists. We understand that there have been a lot of cancellations due to covid-19. As many of us hope that things will get better and many of us will get to see our friends again in person. Once again we would like to thank you all that have become fans of our small magazine and to those that have helped in the magazine.

Building your Wardrobe

By: Timber Gray Wolf

For those that are just starting, it is easy to think that you will need only one outfit for all events year round. But as the year or years go by, you will find new items or even developing your character. Outside of character building there is simply the outside weather. Then accession, are you going to battle, or to The Ball?

can change throughout the year or stay the same. Even comes down to if there are outdoor events all year round. Other things to keep in mind is the weather itself, as many of events are rain or shine, the show must go on. This is a great things to keep in mind when building your wardrobe.

Going along with last month’s article covering building one’s persona, your outfit will help portray that. Yes we know the phase “the garb don’t make the pirate, the pirate makes the garb”. In itself it is very true, but to an existent. Your garb helps portray where your character is from; are you from England or one of their colonies, Spain, Ireland, or more tribal, ext. With this in mind it is easier to look for future clothes to add to your wardrobe.

Even if you might have that single piece or even outfit, that gets wore once in a while due to cold temperatures, you will be happy you have it. The most common thing to get is a heavy cloak/cape or coat. Layering is one of your best friends for cold weather. When it comes down to it, long johns and other forms of under wears are a life saver for colder temps.

Pending on where you live, the climate

Progression of Outfit

When possible rainy weather is in the forecast, all that might be needed is a light coat or water resistant cape. These items are great if you still want to stay

dry while not having to dive to one vender booth to another to stay dry. Warm weather outfit can vary just as much. Pending on one’s gender or persona’s job, the layers can vary. The warmer it gets think about clothes that are light or breathe well, to prevent overheating. There are some events that are come as you are. Then others you might just have to get a little more dressed up for. This one might not be for everyone, but having that one outfit that stands out from the others is always nice. This outfit gives something for others to go “Wow” to. As you are reading this you are thinking “how many different outfits am I going to have to get?” When it comes down to it you might only have your core outfit, the one you would wear all the time. How that outfit may change is the pieces you add or take away by layering. Just speaking from experience, females will grow a wide chose for their wardrobe compared to males. Also other things to keep in mind an outfit can be switched up by mismatching different tops and bottoms. There is also the factor of pairing the outfit with a corset, vests, coats, nothing

at all. Outside of just clothing there are a lot of different ways to just change how an outfit might layout or look by adding accessories or weapons. This also comes down to your persona and what type of job or person they are. Then there is if you have more than one persona, by adding different items can change the outfit by a lot. Something to keep in mind that some do every day and don’t think much about is hair and makeup. Pending on event outfit, but doing this final little touches can really pull it together. Before you think makeup as lipstick, eyeliner, nail polish; think about movie effect makeup. Adding scars for an example or even color contacts, wigs to fake facial hair. These items can help turn you into an all new character or to the one you are aiming for. Slowly your wardrobe will grow to take on an area of its own. If you share your space with a fellow goer as I do, it will grow faster. Soon there is just a spot for all the garb separate from your everyday clothing. My only other word of advice is to shop around and find what is best for you and also price, because things get expensive after a while too.

At the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the American Colonies had no proper navy: almost all warships were under control of the British Royal Navy, and warships took months if not years to build from scratch. So how would the new fledgling country fight the war on the waves? With piracy!

until after the Battle of Saratoga, when the Kingdom of France officially signed on to an alliance with the United State. That taken into account, the Letters of Marque distributed prior would be considered null-and-void by other sovereign nations (mainly England) thus making the privateers true-blue pirates!

Shortly after declaring independence the Continental Congress began offering Letters of Marque to any captain willing to accept them. These documents authorized privately owned vessels to attack merchant and civilian shipping in the name of the host country; essentially state-sponsored piracy . These privately owned and fitted ships were known as privateers. However, the legitimacy of privateers and the line between them and pirates is a blurry one. To be considered a true privateer, one must have the proper paperwork from a sovereign nation, and sovereignty was determined by other nations; some other sovereign nation must recognize your own sovereignty for it to be legitimate. If that is the case, the American Colonies were not considered sovereign

nce a boat is named and christened, the name should never be changed because it’s considered extremely bad luck. Many believe (still to this very day!) that changing a boat’s name will bring misfortune on the ship. A boat can be renamed only if certain protocols are fallowed: a bout must be de-named first by writing the boat’s current name on a piece of paper, fold the paper and placing it in the wooden box, which is then burned. The ashes are then scooped up and thrown into the sea!

This ship many might know, but by a different name, she plays the role of the HMS Interceptor from The Pirates of the Carribeans. Here is some information on the original ship and her replica. The original Lady Washington was a 90 ton brig. Much of her early history is still unknown, but was is know is that she was part of the Columbia Expedition, leaving Boston on October 1, 1787. She sailed around Cape Horn and participated in the maritime fur trade with the coastal Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Then trade of tea and porcelain across the Pacific in China. She was the first American Flagged vessel to round Cape Horn. Another feat was

Lady Washington to make landfall on the Oregon coast near what is now Tillamook, Oregon. Named in honor of Martha Washington (the first, First Lady of America), she was captained by Robert Gray and later by John Kendrick; former captain of her larger sailing partner Columbia Rediviva, a privately owned ship. Lady Washington became the first American vessel to reach the islands Japan in an unsuccessful attempt to move unsold pelts. She remained in the Pacific trade and eventually foundered in the Philippines in 1797. She was lost at the mouth of the Mestizo River, near Vigan, northwest

of Luzon in July 1997.

Lady Washington (20th-century replica) A ship replica of Lady Washington was built in Aberdeen, Washing, just in time for the 1989 Washington State Centennial celebration. Aberdeen is located on Grays Harbor, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean named for Robert Gray, the man who entered the harbor under sail for the first time as master of Columbia.

On television, the ship played a prominent role in the miniseries Blackbeard, and has appeared in the music video for rapper Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Us. Then most recent and most used in one show is as Captain Hook’s ship the Jolly Roger on Once Upon a Time.

Film and television appearances
