The purpose of a ships bell wasto keep the ship safe and the bell was believed to hold the soul of the ship. When a boat was shipwrecked, often the bell was the only part of the a doomed ship that was recoved and for the reason they have a very important historical value. It was also believed by some sailors that a ship’s bell would even ring from the depths of its watery grave and that if a bell rang by itself that was a portent of death.

Q
How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?
I have been plundering and pirating for about six years now..
Marie Softpaws Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
I was drawn to piracy for one main purpose...adventure! I enjoy dressing up in costumes. I also enjoy serving my community. I do a great deal of events for charities. My husband really enjoys history. We found a way to blend both by joining a group of historical pirates. We get to dress up and teach history!
Q
What is some the inspiration behind your garb?
Inspiration for my garb is that we are buccaneers. We keep watch over the animals in our fleet. The beastie keepers. Colors of the wilderness where we typically hang out are green and brown. Therefore my captain’s coat is green and brown.
Q
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?
I enjoy the most about events is just being able to play a character.. just step out of me for a bit and be someone else and not have to worry about not fitting in. The event I enjoy most right now is Pirate weekend at arizona ren fair. Not a lot of events in a land locked desert pirate!
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?
We try to go to a restaurant here in Phoenix called the under tow. It looks like the inside of a ship. Really cool place to go in garb..we also frequent the small downtown street fair in small town mesa. We go out and promote our group the DREAD fleet.
Q
What is your day job outside of pirating?
My day job is a canine police officer I also work as a mermaid handler/ stage manager for Moon Mermaid LLC. I assist her with small tasks as well manage the production of her large events. I manage the 40 foot mermaid tank as a life guard.
Q
Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?
I was born to a poor family.. we had very little ...my father struggled for many years to provide for us. He knew being a blacksmith that the only way I would be able to make it in the world was to pretend to be something I was not.. I was to pretend to be a boy cause see I am a girl. I would watch the ships down at the pier offload their goods and would dream of the adventures they would have. I always wanted to travel; to see the world! I wanted to learn of far away places . Experience the culture, the food. I had to make a decision. My parents sent me away. They knew this was my only way of making it in the word. I cut my hair, donned a pair of pants instead of my same old dress. I went to the pier. I stood in the crowd of all the other boys there seeking a new way of life. I was chosen because I could read. My parents were educated ya see and my mother taught me to read. In that instance my life changed forever. I was now living my life as a pirate boy! I had to cover up my changes as I grew older. I earned my position with the captain as he needed me to read things for him. I gained more and more responsibility on the ship. I eventually made it to Quartermaster. I was in charge of the tracking of all coming and going cargo. One dreary night the fog had taken over and you could barely see your hands waving in front of you. The captain was up on deck. He was rambling about some crazy things. Some things about how he thought I was a girl ya know. and then the waves began to get higher and higher. The ship began to rock back and forth with such ferocity that the boat leaned on its side. The cannons were in the water. The captain was trying to hold onto the rigging nets but he could not get a hold of them. He went right over the side. I immediately went to where he was but in the dense fog I could not see him. He was gone. The crew did not know what to do. They immediately made me the captain. I was now the captain of the ship REVENGE.

Q
How long have you been in to Steampunk and what got you into it?
have been into and doing steampunk for about 4 years now. I was introduced to steampunk by Jason Heinrich and Don Watts. I quickly became a member of Capitol Steam. My first look was Little Red Riding Hood. At GBB II - Gears, Beards, and Beers 2 I took 1st place in the female whiskerina female fantastically fake division. Steampunk allows me to express and broaden my creative side
Q
Does your Steampunk prosoma have a back story?
I have many personas. I have a post apocalyptic Lil Red Riding Hood, Mechanical Wind Up Marie Antoinette, Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony to name a few. I do theater. So, to me what I am dressed up as is just a role to play.
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?
I often do little nods to steampunk in my daily outfits. I’ll wear my steampunk style boots, accessories, purses, dresses, or other pieces. I like to have fun every day.
Q
From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite Steampunk movies or books?
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The story is a classic with many steampunk undertones and themes.
Q
What is one of your favorite parts of going to events?
The funest part of events is meeting mea people and seeing everyone’s creative side and ideas. The best part is making something out of nothing and that there is no wrong way when it comes to steampunk.

What style of mermaid tail is your favorite to use and how many do you have?
Sadie Layne Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
What drew you to the dawn the fins and your driving inspiration? I became a mermaid because I absolutely love kids. All children are great and should be made to believe they are amazing. While mermaiding I can connect easier to children and anything is possible. I’ve always had a fascination with water and mermaids ever since I was little. I started swimming by age 3 and diving by age 4. It makes sense that I am a water sign.
My favorite tail is my Mertailor Spellbound tail. Inspired by hues of blue from Lake Michigan it is surely the one I feel most comfortable in. I also have a mertailor fabric tail and a magic tail fabric tail. Which of the Great Lakes might we find you swimming it Lake Michigan
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far? My favorite thing about birthday parties and events is the kids surprised faces. I also love the curious and sometimes complex questions.
Do you belong to a waterclan or a lone swimmer? There is a small pod I belong to in South Haven
Is there anything you would like to share with our readers? If you want to follow me on all my adventures all around Michigan our website is onceuponatidemermaid.com Facebook: Once Upon a Tide Mermaid Instagram: @onceuponatidemermaid
Being a preforming Mermaid, what kind of events do you go to and what has been one of your favorites so far? One of my favorite things about being a mermaid at events is seeing the faces of little kids light up and excited to see a real mermaid and interacting with them.
What might be your “day job when walking upon dry land? I am a fulltime student and work at the Spring Lake Fitness & Aquatic Center at the front desk and as a lifeguard.
We the Crew of the Silver Moon also know for the Silver Moon Imports. Our group enjoys a good sword fight and sharing that fun for your enjoyment. Take a look and fallow us on Facebook. Then if you see us at events feel free to come take a photo with us.
Entry 3 - Boston pt.I Journal of Bazel Clement Hopwood
Even though days had past, the image of the sharkmaid was still imprinted in my mind. I had heard of unbelievable creatures from all around the world, some rumoured to come from hell itself; yet, I had not ever given the thought of what lurks just below the surface, and how would we even be able to defend against them. I tried to not think too much about it as I still had a long voyage ahead to ponder this. After what felt like a fortnight, Boston was finally within sight. I was looking forward to spending time on solid ground. Resting on the side railing and “feasting” on dried boar, the crew ran about shifting the sails as the ship moved into port. By the time the ship was docked the sun had set, yet the crew stayed busy storing the sheets tight and preparing to unload of their stock. As things quieted down the captain had called a meeting to the Galley. I decided to slowly make my way down to find out what was so important… They had gathered around a single table with what appeared to be a map of Boston. It seemed I missed most of the meeting. The Captain asked for any questions. “How long are we going to be in port” I asked without thinking. Everyone turned looking at me as I stood in the doorway. Captain replied, “Should be no more than two days, and you shall be accompanying Dueien and Anais on their stops, tomorrow once the sun rises.” There was a tone in Captain’s voice that there would be no arguing with him, at least this meant I got to stretch my legs, but not looking forward to being put to work. I turned in for the night expecting a long day ahead of me. ... I was awoken to load pounding on my the cabin door, a female’s voice rung out “Out of bed, it be time to get to work you lazy good for n’tun”. I rubbed my eyes, the cabin was still filled with darkness, what time was it? I slowly made it up to the deck, where Dueien and who I expected was Anais were waiting. Anais looked extremely close to Elise, but her hair was no more than shoulder length. “About time you made it out here” Anais snapped at me. I looked towards the sky the sun seemed to not even be breaking the horizon yet or any time soon. Most of the crew seemed to already be up; some of them were loading three pull carts down
below that were setting on the docks. Searching for where Captain Wolf was, I caught sight of Elise and he both, coming from the Captain’s Quarters, in heavy coats and what looked like armor, both of them baring several blades each. Where or what could the two of them be off to do in such a matter. I felt a shove from behind, a hand on my shoulder as Anais pushed through with an added hip bump setting me off balance. Then followed with a hand placed on the same shoulder balancing me out, this time it was Dueien, “We better not keep her waiting or she will have both our hides tanned,” he joked. The crew had split into small groups each taking a cart into town each going a different direction. Dueien was pulling the cart as Anais walked alongside him flipping through a leather bound book, from what I could see from the text it was a ledger. Every time I thought of saying something I would let out a yawn. Not sure if it was from still being tired or my body stopping me from saying something stupid. I really had to watch what I said, as it might cause me to be stranded in Boston and with no money. Dueien stopped and parked the cart in front of a tavern by the name of the Green Dragon Tavern. Anais pointed at the wooden crates and then at me as she walked into the tavern. Really what made these people think I was there to work, I was a man a stature and class, a man of letters not a dog to follow orders. Deuien must have saw my fruition “Owi Bazel, the sooner we unload this darn crates the sooner we can get some stew”. He gave a sigh “You see we find some hard to find peppers that don’t grow this far north, also toss in at least one wild boar and the owners so happy we don’t charge them much for them, so the usually will give us a small bowl of stew before it get busy.” Thinking of food my stomach rumbled, there was no fighting it. I helped him carry the cates into the tavern, following him into to the storage where we started stacking them one after another. Finally after carrying the last carte into the storage room, with my back aching, I leaned back to hear a loud crackling sound run up my spine. Making my way back into the main hall there sat Dueien and Anais a table with three bowls of stew. Taking a seat I looked down at the wooden bowl with meat and potatoes floating into it. With a roar from my stomach I dug into my breakfast. “Back to the ship then” I asked looking up from my empty bowl. Anais looked at me with a glare, “Did you not see the cart? We still have stops to drop off at and stops for pickups.”
