Hector Barbossa Born 1680s-1690s, West Country, England Died 1740s Isla de Muerta
Hector Barbossa is a fictional character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, portrayed by Australian actor Geoffrey Rush. His character was partly inspired by Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha. Barbossa was first introduced in the series as the villainous and treacherous captain of the Black Pearl after committing mutiny against the ship’s previous captain, Jack Sparrow, in the series’ first installment Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). Having met his demise in the climax of the film, his character is revealed to have been resurrected at the end of Dead Man’s Chest (2006). In the third film At World’s End (2007), it is shown that Barbossa is also one of the nine pirate lords in the Brethren Court, the Pirate Lords of the Seven Seas. In the fourth film On Stranger Tides (2011), he has become a privateer in the King’s Navy and is ordered to accompany Sparrow on an expedition for the Fountain of Youth.

Hayreddin Barbarossa, or Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha (Turkish: Barbaros Hayreddin (Hayrettin) Paşa or Hızır Hayreddin (Hayrettin) Paşa; also Hızır Reis before being promoted to the rank of Pasha and becoming the Kapudan Pasha), born Khizr or Khidr (Turkish: Hızır; c. 1478 – 4 July 1546), was an Ottoman admiral of the fleet who was born in the island of Lesbos and died in Constantinople (Istanbul), the Ottoman capital. Barbarossa’s naval victories secured Ottoman dominance over the Mediterranean during the mid 16th century, from the Battle of Preveza in 1538 until the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Hayreddin (Arabic: Khayr ad-Din نيدلاريخ, which literally means “goodness” or “best of the religion” of Islam) was an honorary name given to him by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. He became known as “Barbarossa” (“Redbeard” in Italian) in Europe, a name he inherited from his elder brother Oruç Reis after Oruç was killed in a battle with the Spanish in Algeria. Oruç was also known as “Baba Oruç”, which sounded like “Barbarossa” (Italian for “Redbeard”) to the Europeans, and since Oruç did have a red beard, the nickname stuck. In a process of linguistic reborrowing, the nickname then stuck back to Hayreddin’s native Turkish name, in the form Barbaros.

This month’s contest had a wide cast of pirates that entered. If you would want to get in on November’s Pirate of the month, Follow and Like us at
Q
How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?
I have been a pirate nearly two years now. A close friend (cough*you*cough) invited me into it. It really appealed to my sense of whimsy.
Q
Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?
Merchant upon the Silver Moon Interviewed by: Timber Gray Wolf
Aye, she does. Anias and her twin sister were born to a French woman and Dutch merchant. Despite being in port maybe once a year the girl’s father did make an effort to see his girls when he a got a chance. Their mother passed when girls were young, and so their father smuggled them aboard his ship. Over the years the girls learned many sailing, selling, and strong-arming skills; this made them quite a force to reckon with. In their late teens the girls struck out on the seas on their own before joining the Silver Moon. Anias is softer spoken and more withdrawn than her sister. She prefers guns in combat at any range.
Q
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?
.That’s a bit tricky to explain, but I’ll try: I like seeing the different parts of the pirate (and renassance) community come together, each different but able to rally around a common theme. My favorite so far has been the Michiania Ren Faire, in part because it was my first event camping out, but also because Barbanegra and crew were great neighbors!
Q
What is some the inspiration behind your garb?
Whimsical/Fantasy elements meet a desielpunk/utilitarian flair. I like belts and straps... I’m also able to get input and feed off the inspirations of my crewmates.
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?
I’ve never gone full-garb somewhere unless I was traveling to an event. But I will wear my belt out and about when I don’t want to carry my purse with me. The bag on my belt is perfect for my wallet and a snack!
Q
From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?
Treasure Planet!
Pirate Directory is a Web Site Log of and For Pirates! Pirate vendors, Pirate Festivals and Events, Pirate Art and Pirate Talent. Then you will want to be listed in the Pirate Directory!
Last year a few of my crew members and I went to the High Seas Adventure weekend. What we found out, to truly enjoy the event, one must take more than one day to enjoy it. So that is what we did this year, spending the weekend at the K.O.A. Campground that was just about 5 minutes away from the event.
Friday Night Three of us set sail for Holly Friday night from Sturgis to set up camp. By the time we got there, the sun was setting, so it was a race ageist the failing light. While setting up, I heard familiar voices. The band “Pirate & Wenches” were already set up next to us, which made it nice to be camping next to someone we knew. We turned in early that night as we were expecting 3 more crew members to be traveling
from Holland. A call at around 2am came in to inform me that they were closing in on the campground. Leaving the tent at a chilling 50ºf, I greeted them at the front entries and showed them the way to the site. Helped them get set up in the tent. Then BED…
Saturday I awoke before the sun rose to make breakfast for the crew. A simple meal cooked in an iron skillet over the fire; Cubed potatoes, Bacon, and Eggs. Waking the crew to get their garb on and eat a hearty meal for the energy needed for the day to come. As we helped each other get our garb on, First Mate Star~Dust took care of those with long hair. Onto the event we descended. Have to give props to the Holly Police Dept. for having great control over the traffic to there was no problem getting into the event. It is still a breath taking feat when you make it through the main gate into Holly Grove. To see all the life in the old builds and the people that travel there to partake in the energy. We did some light window shopping before splitting into small groups and wondering the land. We made small stop by a known pirate hangout, The Giannis Pub. There we sat with Barbanegra for a little while.
It is always a good experience when we get to see and chat with him. While chatting with him I got to get the always warming hug from Admiral Morgan. A Something we kept in mind this year was to window shop Saturday, make a list of things we wanted or could afford. Then come Sunday buy those things on our list. Like any good shopper it is always good to know what you are buying and how much it is really worth. Then other things were getting ideas what to make. I might not have bought much, but spent plenty of fluids and small foods. Which in our group it routes, someone will buy a round of drinks, which we will all share. We all met back up to have a small meal together and catch a show or two before wondering off in other small groups. After leaving the event, back to the camp ground we went. We relaxed around the fire late into the night, as we enjoyed one of the ship’s cocktails.
Sunday Sunday morning I roused early once more to the cold air. Cooking breakfast for the crew, fried taters, sausage, and egg cooked over the fire. As we were getting ready we heard some great news from Pirate and Wenches. What they thought might have been a single weekend performance at the event; they were asked to finish out the season playing at the Red Lion’s Den.
kiss. From there we checked the time and made our way to the Red Lion Pub to hear a few songs from Pirate and Wenches.
The 4 of us went on to meeting up with Anias W’Strom and Dueien D’mont for a good sit down lunch. We decided on sitting down at the Dragon’s Den. For the price of their food, it was worth the price. I ordered the Lobster Mac’n’cheese. It had a good helping of lobster meat, not just We made it in through the main any meat, but the claw meat. The claw meat is my favorite; gate much faster Sunday as we left our weapons at camp so we I will take the claw over the tail any day. Also a nice perk wouldn’t have to go through of sitting down at the Den was weapon check. After having a free refills, after paying for list of things we wanted we did every little drink, so we drank not wait too much time hitting our fill before leaving. up our shops of chose. One shop was a wooden weapon shop, were my apprentice Elise After eating we split into different groups again this time W’Strom and I picked up 2 I with Star~Dust and Kimmie daggers each, so I could safely teach her how to use daggers or Gray Owl. It wasn’t long as we a dagger and a sword combo in all wanted to hit up those last few shops before we left. Where a fight. I found this awesome incent burner, a standing one with To do some more Master and a little dragon on top and the Apprentice bonding the two smoke came out his mouth. of us grouped off to wonder Holly Grove. Thanks to a lot of We ended the event on a good impulse control we were able to help each other not give into foot, being tired and ready to rest. We left Holly Grove to our huge buys. As we wondered backs with great memoirs in we ran into Star~Dust and our hearts and the sunset on Kimmie Gray Owl, which I our path home. might have gone out of way to scare Star~Dust with a surprise

What did you do back in the day if you came across a ship you really didn’t like? If you’re like most, you shot its crew full of holes until they surrendered! Cannons were integral part of naval warfare in the time of pirates, and there was a large (and confusingly labeled) selection to choose from. To simplify things, nearly all cannons were described using the maximum weight of a solid iron ball that the cannon could theoretically fire. For example, a 36-pounder could, in theory, fire up to a 36-pound cannon ball. It was common for a ship to several different sized cannons because larger cannons tended to be less accurate. It was also common practice to stock different types of shot to employ strategically during a fight. Swivel guns were also employed on the quarterdeck and on raiding
boats to provide cover fire and protection. The typical cannonball, known as round shot, did come in different weights (because of the range in cannon size) and were the standard fare of naval battles. Smaller shot could be fired from larger cannons, which gave opportunities for crews to stack standard and/or specialized shot in a barrel in a practice known as double shooting. Double shooting had some drawbacks: less powdered was often used to avoid damaging the cannon and it decreased the accuracy and effective range of the shot. Double shot most effective at pistol range, and to take advantage of this grapeshot, wrapped packages containing three layers of small round shot, would be double shot with round shot. The result was killing or injuring several of the enemy
crew and still punching a hole into the ship. Grapeshot on its own was often used to target officers, who usually kept to the quarterdeck, and against boarding parties. Several other specialty shots existed. Similar to the above mentioned grapeshot was canister shot. Cans filled with musket balls would break open after being fired, scattering much like a shotgun and clearing a deck. In a pinch crews used langrage, bags of scrap such as bolts and rocks. Several shots were developed to disable ships, usually by targeting the masts, rigging, and sails. Chain shot and bar shot were developed for this purpose. Link shot, which was simply a long chain, would also have been effective. Though not used frequently
there are two main types incendiary shots described in historical texts. Heated shot was used by some forts against attacking ships. Red-hot iron was packed with wet cloth before being fired to set the receiving on fire. However heated shot came with the serious risk of setting the user (or their structure) on fire, or causing an explosion by setting off the gunpowder. Fire arrows were also used to set an enemy on fire, and relied on being fired to be set aflame. Despite the name, fire arrows were more akin to thick, barbed darts in design. They were wrapped in pitchsoaked canvas, which caught flame when fired. As you can see, seafaring pirates were armed to the teeth, not just personally, but their transportation as well. Anything from musket balls to standard shot to bags of scrap could be utilized on these vessels, in cannons varying in sizes and shapes to fit any niche in sailing life. This all just goes to show that being out of ammo is only a state of mind.

Pirate Tricorne Cookies
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup butter, room temperature • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 egg • 2 2/3 cup flour • 2 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder • 24 miniature peanut butter cups
Cream the butter and brown sugar together. Mix in the egg. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and cocoa powder together. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and combine. Scrape the cookie dough onto a piece of plastic wrap. Fold over the plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for 30 minute. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Take the dough, place it between two pieces of plastic wrap, and roll it out to 1/8-inch thick. Cut out 2 5/8-inch and 2 1/4-inch circles. Gather the scraps, roll them out to 1/8-inch, and continue cutting out circles until there are 24 2 5/8-inch circles and 24 2 1/4-inch circles. Take a 2 5/8-inch circle and place an unwrapped peanut butter cup on it (with the larger side down). Place a 2 1/4inch circle of dough on top of the candy. Seal the smaller piece of dough to the larger one. Fold in three sides of the larger circle and pinch the three corners. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat with the other dough circles. Chill the baking sheet in the fridge for 10 minutes. Once chilled, take the sheet out and use a knife to make a light “X in the center of each side of the hat cookies. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Let cool on baking tray. They taste best when slightly warm and the chocolate is still a bit melted. Once cooled, they can be warmed up again for a couple of seconds in the microwave before serving, if desired. Makes 24 cookies.
