10 Facts about Captain James Hook With last month’s review of Pan and my sad reaction to their pretrial of Captain Hook, I decided it would be good idea to share some facts about the dear old Pirate.
1
Captain James Hook is a fictional character, the antagonist of J. M. Barrie’s play Peter Pan
2
Hook did not appear in early drafts of the play, wherein the capricious and coercive Peter Pan was closest to a “villain”
3
Barrie states in the novel that “Hook was not his true name. To reveal who he really was would even at this date set the country in a blaze”
4
James Hook does fear the crocodile, but no more than he would any large and deadly creature
5
His hatred of Peter Pan results from the boy killing his men without remorse, tormenting him ceaselessly, and being irrepressibly cocky.
6
There are two fears of Captain Hooks. He hated the sight of the crocodile which pursued him after Pan cut off his hand and the crocodile ate it. He also had the fear of seeing his blood
7
All sources agree that Hook, whatever his origins, was educated at Eton. Barrie went so far as to give a speech at the school, “Captain Hook at Eton,” and in the play, Hook’s last words are the Eton motto, Floreat Etona.
8
James Hook is an inveterate clothes horse. The red coats for which he has become known are his battle coats, and the time of The Stowaway, he has three. For regular seafaring, he wears blue or gray.
9
He has patterned his appearance after King Charles II, most spectacularly in the long black ringlets in which he wears his hair. While many artists--mostly post-Disney--depict him in stockings and knee-breeches, he learned early on that such dress was not practical for piracy.
10
James Hook was a (largely unwilling) boy soprano. He also played flute and harpsichord.

Q
How long have you been into the pirate life and what made you want to be a pirate?
Now a little over 2 years, at least going out dressed as one to events. Michigan Pirate Festive was my first ever event as such. After a small taste of that, I was hooked.
Q
Does your pirate prosoma have a back story?
Captain of the Silver Moon Interviewed by: Star~Dust
My father served in the military for the crown. While on some down time with friends he met a young Irish girl from Strongbow, Ireland. Sometime later I was born in Oxford, England on a cold spring day. After leaving the military he was confronted by the Assassins to help in their cause. As I grew up I spent time between England and Ireland. Like many boys I was sent to a boarding school that lead many of us to joining the military as our fathers did. I was looked over by one of the corporals that served with my father and a fellow assassin. That lead to heavy training and learning somethings that the other students weren’t. As I grew of age to fully join the forces, I was given a split road. Fight as an Assassin or go as I was. I served both for a while. Traveling under the crown and wearing the Crest of the Assassins. Soon I found it hard to follow the rules of the crown as time went by. I joined a small group of assassins that was sent along the coasts of Europe. When I was sent to the West Indies, I found a new start and new ground to fight the Templars. Soon I elevated to a high enough rank among the creed to lead of my own. But I needed a strong way to strike some fear and be free to sail as I pleased. I raised the black flag upon my ship as I sailed out to see what the West Indie’s and the New World had in store.
Q
What do you like the most about going to the events and what is one of your favorite so far?
One of the things I enjoy about the events is the community. Since I have joined in, both vending and partaking in other, I have felt very welcome. Over the last 2 years, I have grown a small popularity in the Great Lake region. It is really hard to pick just one faire, seeing how they all have their own high and low points.
Q
What is some the inspiration behind your garb?
My garb is inspired by the Assassin Creed games. Unlike going for an outfit based on one character, I use the basic outline and idea of the outfit. I find myself being undertoned flashy, not by clothes, but by weapons. Most of the time the following can be found on me at any moment: 2 swords, 2 pistols, Rigging Knife, Hidden wrist blade, and a hooked jutting knife. Another part is plenty of pockets and belts. As a gamer joke, “more pockets and belts a character has the more important they are.
Q
Outside of going to events, are there days that you just Garb up and go out on the town. If so what type of place do you happen to go and do?
At least once a month I try to get the crew together and have small meeting. Most of the time one crew member gets to choice a location to eat and what to do after each month. One of our favorite things is to go to the beach and spar
Q
From the great list of out there, what is one of your favorite pirate movies or books?
Outside of Pirates of the Caribbean, I have fallen in love with Black Sails. It is a great story that keeps your attention. But I have to say, given the choice, I will always pick Treasure Planet.
Q
Is there anything you would like to share with our readers?
I would like to say thank you to all of our reades and hope to keep you with us fore years to come.
Beside the rain we kept getting hit with throughout the weekend, it was a great experience. We at least got to stay dry with in our Booth after Anais and Elise W’nstrom traveled to a nearby Meijer to pick a tarp up for it.
Saturday: The day itself went plenty slow. At least we were across from a stage and got to be intertied. As we thought our day was going to be empty handed, we made one of our large sale from one customer that was only going to buy one item, that lead to several more. After closing hours, there was a banquet for the vendors and cast. There we had found out even with the rough weather, close to a 1,000 people had pasted through, never got the
numbers for Sunday. Among other information, we found out that John and Amy are passing on the torch to another to keep the event going. But the where is in the air, as the city about shut the event down 3 weeks prior. As heat of the day wade on us, the question to how to bathe was there. I put the idea out there, “There is the river”. The next question was where in the river? After circling the island, I find a shallow area one the back side of the island and easy was to get to it. We took to the water. The cold running water
was a shock at first, but felt so great on the joints. (Too bad we forgot to pack soap) As we thought we were setting in for night, thinking the day was done, we were invited in by Barbanegra. Where there was drinking, singing, and telling jokes, that went on late into the night.
Sunday: After waking everyone up at 6am to “He’s a Pirate”. Some of us stood outside to watch the sun come up over the river. Once more we were invited to join Barbanegra and his crew, this time for breakfast. With an early light rain and the sun coming out full blast. The guest came through heavy.
Which lead to some more sales. Which comes down to it, most of our sales were by fellow Vendors. To pass the time, Dueien D’mont and I Spared in the area next to our tent. Anais took some photos as well some great videos. Doing this did a couple of things: 1. Helped me stay awake. 2. Let us have time to practice more stage combat.
3. Put a little show on for the guest just walking by, as most of our matches were only 5 minutes at a time, before we went as sat back down for a while. We had one more storm blow through that cleared a lot of the guest out, that help lead to a quicker tear down time. When we were done, we walked up town for a bit to eat before parting ways.
If you enjoyed the Fair and would like to share that and how much the fair mean to you or the area pleace write a letter to the fallowing people. The city was trying to put an end to the fair 3 weeks before it started. Help fight back to get it in the same loaction next year.

INGREDIENTS
• 1⁄2 lb cheese curds • 3 tablespoons rose water • 2 tablespoons currants • 3 egg yolks • 3 ounces butter • 3 tablespoons sugar • nutmeg, grated (to taste) • mace (optional)
NB Ricotta cheese can be used in place of cheese curd or you can make your own cheese curd very easily. Prepare a deep short-crust pastry shell (9-10 inches across) and bake it blind for 10-15 minutes in a hot oven Remove from oven and allow to cool. (Or have your pre-made pastry shell waiting.) Place the cheese curd and softened butter in a bowl and blend well. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating them well into the mixture. Add the rosewater, sugar, currants and nutmeg to the mixture and beat in well. Pour the filling into the cooled pastry case and bake in a moderate oven (gas Mark 4, 180C or 350F) for 30-45 minutes. (Warning- once the mixture is poured into the pie shell, it should be baked straight away. Otherwise it will start to separate and become oily and not cook well.)(The cheesecake should have risen a little and be a golden color.). Lift from oven and lightly dust with ground mace (if desired).
Shanties Upon the Silver Moon
“One Last Drink” by Enter the Haggis
Shanties were simple songs that the whole crew could sing to help pass time and stay productive. Today some songs have taken place of shanties and here are some songs that is song upon the Silver Moon.
I've had a life that's full Everyone's been good to me So fire up that fiddle, boy And give me one last drink When the sun comes up I will leave without a fight the world is mine tonight

So raise a glass to the dear departed(ones) x3
Up and out the door CHORUS: I’ve had a life that’s full Everyone’s been good to me So fire up that fiddle, boy And give me one last drink When the sun comes up I will leave without a fight the world is mine tonight
Room was full of all his friends Never a funeral, this was the end Drank to all who lent their hand Everyone drank to John Raised a glass and said, I’ve had a life that’s full Everyone’s been good to me So fire up that fiddle, boy And give me one last drink When the sun comes up I will leave without a fight the world is mine tonight
Took young Molly by the hand Spun her ‘round and back again Clicked his heels, bowed his head Never a tear in his eye They carried on ‘til five
