& HISTORY
Learn about the rich history, culture, and heritage that is celebrated and honored in Belmont County.
Barnesville Petroglyphs
Hidden on a hilltop in rural, western Belmont County lies the artwork of a lost ancient civilization known as Track Rocks. The site is composed of sandstone boulders with a unique form of petroglyphs carved directly into the rocks. Track Rocks is thought to originate from a late Prehistoric Era and is most notable for its life-size animal tracks, including bobcats, turkey, and even human tracks. While Track Rocks is not open to the public, John Boilegh, an archaeologist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, leads tours about once a year.
The petroglyphs on Track Rocks may be hard to see at first, but once Boilegh points them out, the images come to life. “You look at the rocks and really start to experience not just the rocks themselves, but also the location and what the prehistoric folks who carved them might have felt,” Boilegh says. “You see these tracks and these symbols starting to pop out all across those rocks.”
We can still admire Track Rocks, despite its age, due to careful preservation. Boilegh attributes credit for this preservation to the Archaeological Conservancy, who manages the site. The detail throughout Track Rocks is rare and makes it an incredibly valuable place to visit. “That’s something that the community is very proud of.” Boilegh notes, “Track Rocks adds an eminent amount of value — not just to the community, but to Belmont County itself.”
Underground Railroad Museum
Inscribed
The Underground Railroad Museum tells the story of Belmont County’s role in helping enslaved people cross into freedom in Ohio. The museum was founded in 1993 by the late Dr. John Mattox and his wife, Rosalind, and strives to help us all understand slavery and the culture during that period of history. Belmont County was an essential part in the Underground Railroad and Abolitionist movement due to the anti-slavery Quaker settlers who lived in the area and the proximity to the Ohio River. There were nearly 200 miles of the Underground Railroad that went through Belmont County and 25 known stations.

Piedmont Lake and Marina
Nestled in the steep hills and wooded valleys of eastern Ohio is the serene and picturesque Piedmont Lake, a hidden gem revered among anglers for its legendary muskie fishing. Managed by Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, Piedmont features over 4,000 acres of land, 2,000 acres of water and nearly 40 miles of shoreline.
Piedmont Lake is a treasure trove for fishing enthusiasts and has one of the highest muskellunge catch rates in the state. In fact, Ohio’s 55.13-pound state-record muskie was caught here in 1972.
Piedmont Marina offers boat rentals, fishing licenses, supplies, and more. Full hookup campgrounds or vacation cabins are available to rent for your next relaxing lake getaway. So, whether you want to hook a trophy-sized muskie or simply revel in the serenity of nature, a trip to Piedmont Lake will leave you reeling with memories.
Piedmont Lake is a fisherman’s delight. Cast a line to catch a multitude of fish species and admire the scenic views from the water.
Q&A With Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD)
Q What is MWCD?
A We are responsible stewards dedicated to providing the benefits of flood reduction, conservation, and recreation in the Muskingum River Watershed.
Q Why do fishers love Piedmont Lake?
A One of the best attributes of fishing at Piedmont Lake is the connection to nature. Known for its secluded bays, the lake is home to muskellunge, bass, channel and flathead catfish, crappie,
bluegill, and saugeye. What makes it exciting is not knowing what you will catch that day. A new record; a new fish you’ve never caught; will you catch anything at all? Fishing has been and continues to be one of the most popular activities at the reservoirs of the MWCD.

Bring the whole family to Dickinson Cattle Company for one of their Longhorns Head to Tail tours, where groups of 10 or more can take a 75-minute journey through Ohio’s Appalachian foothills. Marvel over the beauty of BueLingo, Texas Longhorn, and African Watusi cattle herds only a few miles north of Barnesville. Make sure to take out your cameras to capture young ones feeding the cattle with special cow-candy available for purchase. Barnesville Pumpkin Festival
Celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival — a jam-packed weekend full of fun activities to get you in the fall spirit. On September 26–29, Barnesville comes alive with carnival rides, live music, and of course, all things pumpkin! Enjoy pumpkin bread, pie, and ice cream while you stroll down Main Street to take it all in. Marvel at the giant pumpkins that compete for the title of King Pumpkin during the Wednesday night weigh-in. In 2022, a 2,405-pound pumpkin not only claimed the title of the festival’s largest pumpkin ever, but also holds the Pennsylvania state record.
There are lots of other ways to compete at the festival if you don’t feel like growing your own pumpkin. From a pie eating contest to hog calling and even tobacco spitting, join in on the fun and see where you measure up. Run or walk in the festival’s annual 5K on Saturday morning and enjoy the Giant Pumpkin Parade in the afternoon. Don’t forget to swing by the Antique and Classic Car Show before you head home on Sunday, featuring hundreds of cars from Ohio and its surrounding states.
