LIVING HISTORY
BY JILL SELL
Clermont County has a wealth of impressive sites to tempt any history buff, including historic homes, vital connections to the Underground Railroad and wartime artifacts.
Cranston Memorial Presbyterian Church in New Richmond was founded over 200 years ago in 1821. In the mid-1800s, it was the location for candlelight meetings of the New Richmond Anti-Slavery Society and frequently hosted anti-slavery speakers like John Rankin, George Beecher and Calvin Stowe (Harriet Beecher Stowe’s brother and husband, respectively).
One hundred steps lead to the Rankin House on Liberty Hill. Overlooking the Ohio River and the Village of Ripley, the historic house was built in 1828. The home of Rev. John Rankin, a renowned abolitionist, it was a refuge for most of the over 2,000 escaped enslaved people who passed through the area.
Cranston Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Rankin House are both included in the Clermont County Freedom Trail Audio Tour
The free mobile download explores 42 historical sites, including 22 approved by the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
The one-story, three-room timber-frame house in Point Pleasant where President Ulysses S. Grant was born in 1822 has had a mobile history. After Grant’s death, the structure was moved to Cincinnati and later Columbus. The U.S. Grant Birthplace was re-dedicated in 1936 in its original location. The home has been furnished with period objects and artifacts from the Grant family. Celebrate Grant’s birthday on April 27.
The Bethel Historical Society and Museum also acknowledges President Grant with tannery artifacts owned by Jesse Grant, the President’s
father and first mayor of Bethel. See a doll owned by a young enslaved girl, artifacts from a local shoe factory and those from the Civil War, World War I and II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. A display honoring native son Steve Newman, whose four-year walk around the world ended in 1987, is a favorite.
A number of fascinating people have owned and lived at Promont House in Milford since it was built in 1865. That includes John M. Pattison, Ohio’s 43rd governor, who gave the house its current name. The Victorian brick mansion, in the Italianate style, has been restored to the time the Pattison family called it home, 1879 to 1906.
Harmony Hill Dairy House and Museum is located on the 1800s homestead of Major General William Lytle, founder of Williamsburg, Ohio. In addition to the original stone dairy house (the oldest structure in Clermont County), guests can also see a re-created carriage house and land office where thousands of property transactions took place.
Since 2002, the Tri-State Warbird Museum in Batavia has had a mission to preserve World War II aircraft and tell the story of how aviation contributed to that conflict. The museum boasts of 11 WWII aircraft, including the restored and airworthy RNZAF P-40M Kittyhawk.
