S

tep out of your car into an unparalleled park scene where you can connect with nature and enjoy stunning views of the Scioto River, all while still having quick access to modern amenities, restaurants and shopping. Parking is a snap (and free!), with ample spots located along both sides of the river. Whether your plans for the day center around relaxation or activity, Riverside Crossing Park makes an ideal spot for sunny afternoons. From December to March, lace up your skates and glide across the new temporary ice rink at Riverside Crossing Park. Weather permitting, the rink is open Friday–Sunday. Skate rentals are available. In spring and summer, take a walk on the paved multiuse path along the Scioto River, or bring your bike or a pair of skates to gain a bit more speed. Keep your eyes open for the kayakers floating on the water. In the mood for a bite? A pedestrian tunnel safely connects visitors to and from the dining options in Bridge Park. Grab takeout from one of the local restaurants and bring it back across Riverside Drive for a picnic along the river. Looking for a peaceful and quiet space for reflection? Settle into a seat and listen to the seamless, serene waterfall feature for a little relaxing me-time. When the weather is cooler, enjoy the fireplace and covered seating area in the upper plaza, where guests can take advantage of Wi-Fi access points and universally accessible restrooms. Easily access all the shops in Historic Dublin by walking across the Dublin Link Pedestrian Bridge. This S-shaped suspension bridge connects both sides of the Scioto River, but also offers a beautiful long view down the river so you can drink in the gorgeous tree-lined banks and possibly even catch a glimpse of a grazing deer. Once you cross the bridge, head over to the Grounds of Remembrance at Dublin Veterans Park to walk down the path to Indian Run Falls — one of Dublin’s natural waterfalls.

Wedgewood Hills Falls may be lesser known, but this beautiful spot hidden in the local neighborhood offers a peaceful escape. You’ll want to stop by in cooler months to avoid catching the waterfall during a dry spell. Get lost in the forested urban oasis that is Indian Run Falls (below). Once home to the Wyandot Tribe, the area’s pristine cascading waterfalls can be reached from the park’s nature trails, where you’ll also find observation platforms offering great views.

CHASING

Take to the trails and discover all of Dublin’s beautiful waterfalls. Whether you are chasing masterpieces of nature or magnificent manmade displays, you’ll enjoy the serenity they offer. By Claire Barrington

One of central Ohio’s best waterfalls, Hayden Run Falls (above) delivers majesty with its over 30-foot feature. To get the full experience, access the park’s overlook and visit after a decent rain or sometime in the spring.

Dublin’s manmade water features are equally unique and impressive. The O’Shaughnessy Dam in Glick Park is the perfect place for a pleasant afternoon break. Pack a picnic, take a stroll along the walking path and say hello to the local wildlife. Also check out Riverside Crossing Park, where you’ll find Dublin’s newest water feature facing the Scioto River (pictured). Stay a while and relax to the soothing sound of water — the park provides several areas to enjoy including the plaza, south lawn and green spaces.

Fresh greens are also in season at the Golf Club of Dublin, a public golf course. If disc golf is more your speed, Dublin has three courses around town (be sure to bring your own discs). Weather not up to par? Head into Scene75 for indoor mini-golf, go-karts and arcade games, or take a painting or pottery class at Busy Bees Pottery. End your day with a slice of decadent fudge from Kilwins. Fans of farm-fresh produce can check out locally made food and fare at the Dublin Market at Bridge Park Saturday mornings, May–September. Historic Business Time Trek

DON’T MISS

On Dublin’s newest trek, traverse 200 years of Dublin’s rich history while getting your steps in. The Historic Business Time Trek invites you to take a walk around Historic Dublin, where you’ll find a series of tiny green signs in front of many of the businesses. Each sign shares the story of the business once occupying the space, tracing as far back as the 1800s. Many of the buildings in the area are even listed on the National Register of Historic Places! Scan the QR code on each sign to learn more about both the historic business and the business currently operating in the building. Created by the Historic Dublin Business Association with help from the Dublin Historical Society, this trek will educate, entertain and inspire.

At 27 S. High St., dinner at the Dublin Village Tavern means dining in a building that was once the Dublin post office, originally built around 1880.

Before the Visit Dublin Ohio Tourist Information Center occupied 9 S. High St., the location was home to a myriad of business since 1840, including a soda shop.

Fairy Door Trail

Since 1857, many businesses, from a church to a grocery to a flooring company, have operated where Tucci’s calls home on 35 N. High St.

Take a whimsical journey through downtown Dublin to find miniature fairy doors located inside local businesses. Pick up a guide at the Dublin Visitor & Information Center or at visitdublinohio.com and set off exploring (pro tip: the first fairy door is in the visitor center!). The shops on the trail include everything from the new North Market Bridge Park to the Dublin Toy Emporium, so whether you have a family of sweet tooths, fashionistas or even caffeine junkies, there’s a shop everyone can enjoy. The Fairy Door Trail is a year-round activity, updated each year on St. Patrick’s Day, so be sure to check back for changes. When you’ve found each fairy door, return your completed passport for a free commemorative T-shirt.

Leatherlips (1), a 12-foot-tall limestone structure, has greeted visitors to Scioto Park since taking up residence there in 1990. Boston artist Ralph Helmick memorialized the famous Wyandot chief known for his intelligence and dignity while living among settlers along the Scioto River. Make a day of it by packing a picnic and spending time at the park’s playground. Don’t miss the Sundays at Scioto concert series, which brings a world’s worth of musical genres to Dublin each season. Designed to represent the sport of soccer, Out of Bounds (2) features seven 10-foot-high modular forms randomly scattered throughout Avery Park to represent balls that have landed outside the game’s conventional boundaries. The work, created by Los Angeles artist Lloyd Hamrol, also complements the softball and baseball diamonds and tennis and basketball courts prevalent throughout the 73-acre park. Dublin’s poignant tribute to the city’s farming legacy and rural landscapes of the past is lovingly exemplified in Frantz Park. Field of Corn (with Osage Orange Trees) (3), designed by Columbus artist Malcolm Cochran, comprises 109 6-foot-tall concrete ears of corn and replicas of trees the artist saw on his first visit there. The park is named after the late Sam Frantz, who farmed the land the installation is located on.

Visitors to Watch House (6) in Coffman Park do double-takes while gazing at the contemplative copper dwelling designed by Columbus artist Todd Slaughter. Outside, the circular dome — patterned after a prehistoric Indian mound and a planetarium — is a nod to the past, present and future. Inside are cut-outs representing objects of family life.

Bring your bathing suit to Ballantrae Community Park for an afternoon of frolicking with the trio of Dancing Hares behind the park’s community splash pad. The 24-foot-high sculpture, designed by London, England, artist Sophie Ryder, is patterned after the courtship boxing ritual rabbits engage in every spring. Since the artist crafted her work from pieces of pipes, hammers and household objects, visitors often scavenger hunt to see how many unique objects they can spot.

The audio for each piece of art can be accessed by calling 614-368-6999, and selecting a tour stop listed below: Leatherlips, Stop 1 Out of Bounds, Stop 2 Field of Corn (with Osage Orange Trees), Stop 3 Dublin Rec Center sculptures: Charting History, Community Time Capsule and Running Man Frieze (after Muybridge), Stop 4 Jack Nicklaus tribute sculpture, Stop 5 Watch House, Stop 6 Going, Going…Gone!, Stop 7 Ascension, Stop 8 One Step at a Time, Stop 9 Narrow #5, Stop 10

In 2008, Todd Smith’s arresting Exuvia tree climber series (12), joined that installation in Coffman Park. To make the three figures traversing the trees appear lifelike, Smith created casts of himself and covered them with fiberglass cloth and resin. Located in the center of the city, Coffman Park sets the stage for the annual Dublin Irish Festival in August and serves as a resplendent backdrop to the Fletcher Coffman Homestead, built between 1862 and 1867 and decorated with original furnishings. The park is also a popular gathering place for fishing in the stocked pond, ice-skating and tennis. Oregon artist Don Merkt’s ode to the passage of time through the imagery of baseball is showcased at Darree Fields. Going, Going…Gone! (7) consists of a bat striking a baseball shaped like an alarm clock. The ball’s trajectory is marked by a series of discs leading into the woods beyond. One of Dublin’s largest parks, it’s also home to seven baseball diamonds, 18 soccer fields and a community garden. Four-legged pals can roam in Nando’s Dog Park, a 2-acre pet oasis of green space named in honor of the city’s first police canine.

COLUMBUS ZOO AND AQUARIUM: GRAHM JONES

id you know that you can travel to six different regions of the world without a passport or long plane rides? All you need is a ticket to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, which boasts over 10,000 animals and unique attractions that kids of any age will love! If the ocean is what you seek, check out the zoo’s underwater exhibits. In their Shores & Aquarium section, you’ll find Discovery Reef, a 100,000-gallon saltwater aquarium that houses fish, sea horses, sharks and garden eels. Adventure Cove is another of the zoo’s oceanic destinations, where you can learn about the care and keeping of sea lions in a behind-the-scenes tour of the sea lion and seal facility. For a more hands-on experience, check out the stingray feeding experience in Stingray Bay from January to mid-March.

Are land mammals more your speed? If so, make sure to visit the giraffes. In the summer they live in the Heart of Africa region, where you can handfeed them lettuce. From November–February, the giraffes vacation in their winter home, which you can explore on a premium tour. A variety of seasonal events mean the zoo can look different every time you visit. Halloween brings Boo at the Zoo, a lighthearted celebration throughout October. The event includes a trick or treat trail around the zoo, giant pumpkin carving and more. Summertime’s Zoombezi Bay also comes back from the dead as ZOMBIEzie Bay, complete with frightening haunted houses and thrilling rides. Come mid-November, Wildlights transforms the zoo into a winter wonderland with over 3 million LED lights. Guests can visit indoor exhibits, admire animated light displays and even visit Santa at the Polar Frontier.

The Irish Fairy Door Trail is perfect for familiarizing yourself with Historic Dublin and Bridge Park (plus, it’s a great way to keep the kids engaged during a shopping trip!). Search for 12 mini fairy doors set up around town in local businesses to earn a free t-shirt. Be sure to start at the Dublin Visitor & Information Center, where you’ll pick up your guide and find the first door. Read more about the trail, and other trails around Dublin, in the story starting on page 12. IRISH FAIRY DOOR TRAIL: RAINER ZIEHM

TIPS FOR THE TRAIL: The trail is updated every year on St. Patrick’s Day, so plan your adventure accordingly. Since the trail spans Historic Dublin and Bridge Park, take advantage of the new Dublin Link Pedestrian Bridge to explore shops on both sides of the river.
