GREAT SPORTS
With their exhilarating Major League Soccer Cup Championship win in front of a home crowd in 2023 and a successful 2024 season, the Columbus Crew and soccer fans have much to look forward to the rest of 2024 and 2025.
On July 24, the MLS All-Star Game returned to Columbus for the third time — and for the first time at Lower.com Field. The week leading up to the game was jam-packed with music, interactive fan experiences, soccer-themed programs and competitions, plus the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge.
On July 27, the Crew took on English Premier League powerhouse Aston Villa. Then on August 3, two of the English Premier Leagues’ top teams, Manchester City and Chelsea, played a match at Lower.com Field. The Crew also earned their first Leagues Cup title in team history on August 25.
The soccer action kicked off April 9 with the United States Women’s National Team winning the SheBelieves Cup.
The soccer matches won’t be Columbus’ first major sports competitions in 2024. In January, more than 175 of the brightest skating stars took to the ice at Nationwide Arena for the 2024 Prevagen U.S. Figure Skating Championships. With 60,000 tickets sold, the event saw the highest attendance for a U.S. championship since 2018, which was an Olympic year.
The entire Columbus community came together for cool collaborations that included artist grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, a sock-skating rink, celebrity author talks with Olympians Nancy Kerrigan and Gracie Gold at the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and a dazzling ice performance with live music played by members of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
In other sports news, Columbus recently became the third city in the country to score one of seven teams in the Pro Volleyball Federation, the country’s newest women’s professional indoor volleyball league. The Columbus Fury, featuring #1 draft pick Asjia O’Neal, played their inaugural regular season through May at Nationwide Arena.
The Fury is the latest team to light up the Arena District alongside the city’s beloved pro sports lineup that includes the Columbus Crew soccer team, the Columbus Clippers baseball team and the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey club. On the collegiate side, the entire city cheers year-round for The Ohio State University Buckeyes, whether they’re on the field, court, mats or ice!
A pro middle blocker for four years, Columbus Fury’s Rosenthal has played for the U.S. National Team and for volleyball teams in Finland and Germany.
What do you expect for the Fury’s first season?
“We are a whole team that is greater than the sum of its parts, and I think we’ll get better every week. It’s an honor to help build this team, program and sport in Columbus.“
You’ve played all over the world — what’s it like becoming one of the first players in the new Pro Volleyball Federation back home?
“It’s really special — this league speaks to the level of talent in the U.S. Volleyball is something I’ve always traveled away from home to do, and I’m excited to share this sport and our passion with friends, family and new fans here. I had a three-year career abroad and being so far away for so long wasn’t working out. I feel fortunate because I felt coming home would be the end of my career, but my return coincided with the new league and I was able to come home and play. This league has a wealth of talent — Olympians and pros from around the world — it’s exciting to build something for all of them and future generations.”
What has been your impression of Columbus and the volleyball scene here?
“I’m a Midwest girl from Wisconsin and Columbus feels like a good fit for me. There are many people here who are passionate about volleyball. We’ve gotten such a welcoming reception — I think Columbus is ready to embrace women’s professional sports.”
Do you have any favorite spots in Columbus yet?
“I really like the Short North Arts

COLUMBUS
When it comes to fashion, you may think of New York and LA, but did you know Columbus is the #1 metro in the U.S. for concentration of professionals working in the apparel and fashion industry? In addition to being the headquarters of corporate giants that include Victoria’s Secret, Abercrombie & Fitch, DSW and Express, Ohio’s capital has become a mecca for the industry’s brightest talent.
“The city is renowned for having a thriving fashion culture. It started in the business sector when designers moved here to work for the major powerhouses located here. It put us on the map in terms of retail, and the industry blossomed from there,” explains Keira Chatman, executive director of the Columbus Fashion Council. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing scholarships to fashion design students and a platform for local designers.
Chatman’s own By The People clothing line — T-shirts printed with messages to inspire the launch of minority-owned
businesses and neighborhood investment — is featured at hosful Collective Boutique the Olde Towne East community, where designers help customers find looks that fit their lifestyle. Another popular destination with home-grown brands is downtown’s Common Thread, a showcase for seven local fashion designers. Find more trendy specialty stores and oneof-a-kind boutiques located in the city’s Short North Arts District Shop for the latest looks, art and home goods, and see why USA Today named High Street among the “10 great American shopping streets.”
fashion(able) events
Anyone style-conscious won’t want to miss the special events Columbus hosts throughout the Fashion Week Columbus, Oct. 13–19 in a variety of venues throughout the city, features a host of fashion shows and related programs spotlighting local
Since it debuted in 2010, the event has presented the artistry of more than 200 emerging designers, provided more than 2,000 models with exposure to top-tier agencies, produced more than 175 fashion shows and awarded $55,000 in scholarships to fashiondesign students.
“First-time attendees are often surprised at the level of professionalism and creativity the week holds,” Chatman says. “This is not your usual local fashion show with a few garments. There’s something for everyone here, ranging from high-end apparel to attire with international influence. It’s a great time.”
Columbus is on the brink of becoming the heart of fashion.
“Our fashion week goes toe-to-toe with those in New York and Los Angeles,” she adds with a smile. “You’ll leave exhausted because there’s so much to do, but you definitely won’t leave unfulfilled.”
Creativity continues to flourish at the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD), which has held storied status as one of the nation’s top private art and design colleges for more than 140 years. Their annual CCAD Fashion Show in early May spotlights emerging designers’ collections, selected by a jury of industry professionals.
“CCAD’s fashion shows spotlight trend-setting clothing lines designed by students, and introduces them to some of the biggest names in specialty retail. That’s a huge opportunity that doesn’t happen in every city,” says Yohannan “Yogi” Terrell, founder and executive director of the Columbus Fashion Alliance. He started the nonprofit in 2019 to create, connect and move fashion forward by creating strategy-based pathways leading to entrepreneurial success in the industry.
To that end, plans are in the works to create an Innovation Hub in the city’s Discovery District. Scheduled to open in 2025, the 43,000-square-foot, four-story building will include 20 individual fashion designer studios and 13 fashion designer offices, as well as screen printing, design, production and shoe labs. Additionally there will be a resource library, photography area, event and retail spaces, an exhibition hall and a café-lounge.
“Columbus is already a gem when it comes to fashion,” Terrell says. “The new hub will have the potential of also becoming a base for small-batch manufacturing. People travel in search of things they can’t find in their hometown.”
in fashion with austin tootle
Austin Tootle’s passion for design was sparked during his pre-teen years when he spent hours glued to the television set watching MTV with his sister.
“While other kids were tuning into cartoons, I was fascinated by the music videos MTV aired — particularly those featuring the clothes that pop girlies of the early 2000s wore,” Tootle, 27, recalls. “It was then I knew I wanted to incorporate that experience into my life.”
Since then, the Columbus-based fashion designer, who graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) in 2022, has gone on to showcase his collections in a variety of impressive settings. The contemporary couture he created for Fashion Week Columbus 2022 exudes a ’60s vibe that garnered accolades, and the line of daring lingerie he debuted at last fall’s illustrious New York Fashion Week was, by all accounts, a showstopper.
In partnership with CCAD, Greater Columbus Sports Commission and U.S. Figure Skating, Tootle was also chosen to design the costume that skating star Isabeau Levito wore when she took to the ice during the Exhibition Show at the 2024 Prevagen U.S. Figure Skating Championships held in January in Columbus.
“I never want people to expect a certain look from me, because once someone expects something, they’ll be bored with it because they predicted it,” says Tootle. “My designs are always up in the air because they’re based on what I’m feeling in the moment.”
What inspires him: “Music is such a huge inspiration because it can make me feel a certain type of way. So, when I’m conceptualizing designs or collections, I’ll go on a drive, blare the music as loud as I can get it and really listen to the composition and lyrics. My favorite singersongwriter is Lana Del Rey because she has a style that transcends me to another time with lyrics I can identify with in my own life.”
New York state of mind: “Being part of New York Fashion Week was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. Members of my family and friends were there to support me, and the show’s producer came up to me and said [my collection] was one of the best he’d ever seen. I sat down on the bed one night and thought, ‘This was my dream. This was something I hoped would happen in 15, 20 or 30 years. I can’t believe it’s happening right now.’ Overall, it was a magical experience.”
On working with Isabeau Levito: “Keeping in mind Isabeau was only 16 [at the time], the custom-made costume I designed for her features a wide neck bodice, lettuce edge mini skirt and sheer mesh bishop sleeves. The garment was then enhanced by more than 15,000 rhinestones that sparkle like diamonds. The look is feminine, sophisticated and appropriate for her age.”
What CCAD means to him: “The college jumpstarted my career. The faculty and staff are all about reaching out to the community and helping students achieve their goals. I would never have gotten to this point without them and am proud to have mentored students in a professional practice class where I helped them hone skills and build individual portfolios.”
What Columbus means to him: “There’s an aura of creativity that lives in Columbus — from the Short North to German Village to The Ohio State University. The collaborative art initiatives taking place within the city really stand out. And I’m very drawn to them.”

For a decade now, three bronze deer sculptures known as the Scioto Lounge have gazed over the tranquil waters of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus. Arching more than 120 feet above Gay and High streets downtown, Current is a stunning ribbonlike sculpture by artist Janet Echelman. Braided with nylon and illuminated at night, it moves gently with the winds and pays homage to the city’s gas-lit street arches after the Civil War. See Current during the warmer months before it’s stored over winter.

What do you love about the Columbus restaurant scene?
“It’s pretty cool how the city has evolved in the short time I’ve been here. Every neighborhood is its own very distinct place. It’s cool how not everything is homogenous. Every place has its own vibe.”
Aside from your restaurants, where do you like to eat?
“I love supporting my friends. I go to Joya’s Café and Agni to see Avishar a lot. Joya’s gives me faith that lunch spots can be cool. Comune’s probably my favorite restaurant in Columbus. And I go to The Lox Bagel Shop about three times a week. If it’s the morning, I’ll do the Southwest egg sandwich on sesame. Or I’ll get their egg salad with iceberg on the sea salt and herb bagel.”
What’s coming this year at your restaurants?
“At Chapman’s, we just hit year three. We’re feeling it out for the course of the year, but we’ll do a theme for an entire month. We don’t have a plan for the chapters, but we’re rolling with it and it’s pure creativity all the time. At Hiraeth we’re planning a lot of guest chef dinners, with a lot of heavy hitters. At Ginger Rabbit Jazz Lounge, we’re hoping to resume the themed dinners. That’s the most fun I’ve ever had cooking in my entire life.”
Yet another of the city’s food festivals, the Jazz & Rib Fest, takes over downtown on July 18–20, 2025. Get details on page 27.

MIDDLE WEST SPIRITS
The term terroir is not commonly used in association with whiskey, but the soil where grains for Middle West Spirits are grown makes a difference in the end product. During the Ice Age, most of the state of Ohio was covered with glaciers. While this was millions of years ago, the variations in the soil based on where the glaciers once were remains. These soil variations are what allow Middle West to optimize their management of over 25,000 acres of farmland for grains that deliver unique flavors and premium quality spirits. All grains used in Middle West Spirits are non-GMO and food grade.
Winter wheat is commonly used in whiskey mash bills, but the soft red winter wheat we grow in Ohio is unique because of the soil where it is grown and the specific seed variety. The claypacked soil of northern Ohio retains more water allowing for water-rich plants. The wheat berries of these plants are fatter and higher in starch, delivering a higher vanillin content. These higher vanillin notes play better with the caramel and sugar notes from the corn and oak to produce a unique flavor profile.
The variety of corn Middle West uses is from a seed profile dating back to the 1900s, which has been cross-pollinated for generations, so they do not require genetic modification (are non-GMO), single origin, and open-pollinated grains. It is grown in Ohio’s southern soil sits at
the border where former glaciers ended and contains sandstone instead of clay, which allows for better drainage. It is also softer than other corn, which makes it better quality but has a lower yield and is harder to process — we think the quality is worth it.
When you take this much care choosing the seeds and managing the farming of your grains, so you know where and how they were grown, why stop there? Middle West is one of few distilleries that process their own grains. It is the last part of the process before mashing which puts another lever of quality control in their hands. Creating premium whiskey with a unique flavor profile requires highquality ingredients and processes from beginning to end; so every step Middle West takes is worth it to ensure that their passion and commitment to making great whiskey is in every pour.
