THOMAS WORTHINGTON’S STORY
I came to Ohio to survey military land grants in the Northwest Territory in 1796. The fertility of the land convinced me of a brighter future in the Territory. I left my Virginia home and settled in Chillicothe in 1798 with my wife, Eleanor, and infant daughter, Mary. I was excited about buying and re-selling land in the Scioto River valley. In the spring of 1802, I moved my family to a temporary log home northwest of Chillicothe. Later in 1802, masons began cutting the stone for a mansion. In the fall of 1807, I moved Eleanor and our five children into our permanent home. Our family eventually grew to 10 children, five boys and five girls. I hired German indentured servants to develop a threeterrace garden on the east side of the mansion, and to create an extensive orchard to the west of the mansion. Here I have entertained many important people whom I have met through my efforts of promoting statehood for Ohio, which became a reality in 1803 when Ohio became the 17th state. My religious beliefs and my personal moral compass have also led me to support assistance to the state’s deserving poor and prison reform. A state library and free public education were a necessity for the development of Ohio. The canal system was also key to improve transportation and commerce. I was chosen as one of Ohio’s first two United States senators and later the sixth governor. I am called the “Father of Ohio Statehood” in recognition of my leadership and dedication to the cause of statehood and my vision for the ongoing development of the state.

VISIT TODAY See Ohio the way one
of its earliest leaders did. Adena Mansion, home to Ohio’s sixth governor Thomas Worthington, was completed in 1807. The view is so spectacular here that it inspired the Great Seal of the State of Ohio. If you look east, you will see the famous view of the Mt. Logan Range. The restoration of 300 acres of the former estate allows visitors to experience the mansion and gardens, as the Worthington family would have in the early 1800s.

TECUMSEH’S STORY
My name, in Shawnee, means Shooting Star. I was born in 1768 near Chillicothe on tribal land nestled in the rolling hills and Scioto River valley that would become part of southern Ohio. As a young boy, I learned to hunt on these lands. We fish in the river and grow squash and beans in the rich soil. It has been like this for generations. I have been a warrior, a great warrior it is said, since I was 15. Our lives began to change as more and more white men, who we call Shemanese, began to enter the Kan-tuck-kee country to the south. Our chiefs and warriors knew that it would not be long before these Shemanese would cross the Ohio River and move into Shawnee country. I knew to defeat the Shemanese all tribes needed to be united. I urged other tribes, all under one sun and one moon, to come together. I used my gifts of persuasion, strategy, oratory skills and bravery to convince my brothers. In the War of 1812, my warriors fought alongside the British, who did not steal tribal land as did the American settlers.

But even when other tribes joined the Shawnee, we were outnumbered in many battles. The Great Spirit did not grant us victory. My people have been driven from our homes along the Scioto with heavy hearts to the West. Often my words, “Show respect to all people and grovel to none,” are repeated. Although even shooting stars fall, their brilliance enlightens many.

AMERICAN INDIAN’S STORY
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park
16062 St. Rte. 104 Chillicothe, OH (740) 774-1125 nps.gov/hocu
I am the voice of American Indians whose cultures flourished around the Great Lakes beginning more than 2,000 years ago. Our lives and remnants of most of the ways we lived and died are now shadows upon the earth. But in the Scioto River valley, near Chillicothe, part of our heritage and that of the Hopewell culture can be seen and sensed. Here we built amazing, monumentally scaled earthworks in the shape of circles, squares and other geometric shapes. By building them with basketfuls of earth, and placing them near waterways, we honor the Earth, the Sky and the Water. It gave us the strength of the surrounding hills and the persistence of the great winds overhead. The burial and ceremonial mounds connected us with our ancestors and family members who journeyed beyond our sight and whom we honored. By building these places to align with the stars, the seasonal solstices and equinoxes and the long lunar cycle of 18 years and 219 days, we honor the Creator and the Universe. They celebrate the sun, moon and stars that guide us in planting our crops. We built them to last forever. Our descendants, who came after us and who lived here in these places since they were built, are our relatives. They took care of the sacred sites — they respected these places and did not build on top of them. When you step onto these sacred places, you are returning to our lands.

MAIL POUCH
Hidden until a fire in 2006 destroyed the surrounding buildings, this mural at 25 E. Second St. features a Mail Pouch chewing tobacco advertisement. In the heyday of barn advertising, Mail Pouch ads once covered over 20,000 barns and other buildings in the U.S. This particular mural, painted between 1880 and 1892, has been restored and sealed for future generations.
CHILLICOTHE TELEPHONE
You might think the mural painted by worldfamous mural artist Eric Henn at 68 E. Main St. is real. This seemingly photographic artwork features open barn doors revealing a horse and carriage and women in period dresses strolling the sidewalk. Painted in 2006, the mural is a tribute to the Chillicothe Telephone Company, one of the country’s oldest phone companies.

At East Second and Mulberry streets in downtown Chillicothe, see a mural of the Ohio and Erie Canal, which once flowed through Chillicothe and drove the local economy for over 70 years. This mural, painted in 2003 by local artist Jeff Speakman, is based on a circa-1900 postcard that depicts a canal boat and period buildings.

IF WALLS COULD TALK TO SEE HOW ROSS COUNTY CELEBRATES ITS HISTORY, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE WALLS.
Colorful and detailed murals, many of which were painted by local artists, can be spotted in historic downtown Chillicothe, Bainbridge and Frankfort.

Local artist Pamela Kellough’s postcards mural, found at 203 E. Main St. in Bainbridge and completed in 2017, shows images from different eras: the American Indian origins of the area, historic buildings in the town and modern day Bainbridge.
FRANKFORT HISTORICAL
Springfield Street in Frankfort is home to a 66-foot by 15-foot mural completed by Pamela Kellough in 2018. The mural depicts the area, from the original residents, the Shawnee Native American tribe, to a sunflower that honors the city’s roots in agriculture and nods to its annual Sunflower Festival. visitchillicotheohio.com

oon the entire world will know about Ross County’s Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. The “outstanding universal value” of these American Indian earthworks is gaining attention as they move ever closer to joining the prestigious World Heritage List as part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks World Heritage nomination. With inspiration from the National Park Service, the UNESCO World Heritage List was created in 1972 to encourage international cooperation in protecting the world’s greatest cultural and natural treasures. More than 1,000 properties, including the Pyramids of Giza, Stonehenge and the Grand Canyon, are on the list. The United States has only 24 World Heritage sites, and none in Ohio. The closest is the Frank Lloyd Wright designed home Falling Water in western Pennsylvania.

GREAT CIRCLE FORT ANCIENT
OCTAGON
he Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks nomination includes five earthworks at the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ross County, along with Newark Earthworks’ Octagon and Great Circle in Licking County and Fort Ancient Earthworks in Warren County. Built between about A.D. 1 and A.D. 400 by American Indians, the earthworks were ceremonial gathering places for people who came from as far away as the Yellowstone basin and Florida. They are among the largest earthworks in the world that are not fortifications or defensive structures. The earthworks form precise squares, circles and octagons as well as a hilltop sculpted to enclose a vast plaza. The geometric forms align with both the sun’s cycles and the complex patterns of the moon. Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ross County preserves five earthwork complexes: High Bank Works, Hopeton Earthworks, Hopewell Mound Group, Mound City Group and Seip Earthworks. Many were built to a monumental scale, with earthen walls up to 12 feet high outlining geometric figures more than 1,000 feet across. Newark Earthworks is the largest set of geometric earthworks ever built. The remaining well-preserved pieces — the Octagon Earthworks and Great Circle Earthworks — contribute uniquely to the nomination. The Octagon includes a perfect circle and adjoining octagon more than a half-mile across, with perfectly formed, eye-level embankments that align with eight key rise and set points of the little-known 18.6-year cycle of the moon. The Great Circle includes the tallest remaining gateway from the Hopewell world, with the entrance measuring over 20 feet tall. Fort Ancient’s earthen embankments extend for more than 3.5 miles along the edge of a plateau with gorgeous views high above the Little Miami River, and contain four stonecovered mounds that form a perfect square, which aligns to solar and lunar events. visitchillicotheohio.com
