The Noble Pig, 131 E. Court St. Erica Cawley began painting and rebuilding furniture in her garage in 2015. Today Cawley and her husband Jeremy own The Noble Pig, an eclectic shop most known for its handmade and re-purposed furniture. “We sell furniture that we refinish, stain or paint,” says Cawley. “We focus on dining room tables, hutches, dressers and basically anything wood.” The Noble Pig also sells antiques, new and vintage home décor, and clothing, as well as products from 20 other local vendors. Cawley’s two teenage daughters also help in the shop: one etches glass and makes jewelry and the other enjoys buying and selling vintage glass including Fenton. “Some people come in for help redecorating, and we’ll try to learn their style and suggest items for them,” says Cawley, who often attends auctions looking for things her customers request. “Or if they’re looking for an outfit for a special event, we’ll help put together clothing and jewelry for them. We try to give people a personal shopping experience.”

In business for 32 years and in the same location for 30, Rob and Christina Stiffler are owners of Showplace Furniture Gallery. Christina Stiffler says she is “blessed” to have loyal customers of all generations. The couple, both born and raised in Fayette County, have four children and intend to keep the business in the family. “All the kids have worked here ever since they could walk and dust,” says Stiffler. “Our youngest is in college at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and is studying business and design to take over the store someday.” Almost everything on the 15,000-square-foot showroom floor is in stock, which means that customers don’t have to worry about long wait times between pickup or delivery for new sofas, sectionals, recliners, dining sets, bedroom suites, bedding or appliances. Showplace Furniture Gallery specializes in classic, traditional furniture, although contemporary styles can be ordered. Lately,

the lift chairs have been a fan favorite. Stiffler also says that neutral and earth tone furniture colors like grays and browns are especially popular this year.

Three Birds Boutique, 250 E. Court St. Brittany Pfeifer, owner of Three Birds Boutique, says there is one responsibility of managing the women’s clothing and accessory shop she will never give up: choosing and ordering the inventory. “I’m just so picky. But it’s worked well for the past three years and people love what I buy, so I’ll keep doing it,” says Pfeifer, who opened her business in 2018 in a single room of her home. “I’ll spend hours and hours planning outfit options, choosing things that I think go well together.” These techniques have helped her expand quickly. Counting that first little retail room, Pfeifer has since moved into four

different locations, each larger than the last. “This community is so supportive,” says Pfeifer. “Washington Court House is a small town, so the amount of customers who walk through our doors is something I couldn’t have imagined.” Pfeifer counts shackets and leggings among her bestsellers, and says customers appreciate the impressive selection of dresses. Shoppers can complete their new outfits with accessories including jewelry, hair accessories, beanies or even handbags.

Main Street Fayette McKenna Brown is director of Main Street Fayette, a non-profit organization that coordinates family-friendly entertainment, signature events and celebrations in downtown Washington Court House. Brown’s main goal is to promote economic growth among the many downtown retailers, restaurants, other-non-profits and

professional services. But no one told her she can’t have fun while doing her job. “I love it here,” says Brown. She shares her best advice for local residents and the ever-increasing number of out-of-towners who come to shop: “Just start at one point, turn a corner and you’ll find a coffee shop. Turn another, and it’s unique boutiques and antique stores. You’ll get a good feel of everything if you walk the entire downtown, there is truly something for everyone.” Shop Hops, the second Friday and Saturday of every month, are especially festive and offer giveaways. Depending on the season, visitors can enjoy themed store windows (some with live mannequins), horse and carriage rides, car shows, food trucks, live bands, DJs and activities for kids. Downtown Live, the popular annual Christmas event, transforms downtown Washington Court House to a scene similar to a “Holiday Hallmark Movie.”

There’s even more to love in downtown Washington Court House. Find a little bit of everything at Harry and Annie’s, including antiques, uniques, rust and whim. Gilmore Fine Antiques and Design is the place to go for vintage, Victorian or mid-century modern home decor. Back-En-Thyme Flower and Gift Shop offers thoughtful gifts to give or receive, including fresh flowers, gourmet chocolates, wine and boutique items. Find custom-made clothing with vinyl transfers or glitter designs at Creative Designs by Denise. And for locally made decorative signs and vintage and rustic furniture, The Farmhouse should be your first stop.

community spotlight:

Robin Beekman BY LINDA FEAGLER As owner of Robin’s Nest Flowers & Gifts in Jeffersonville, Robin Beekman guides her customers through life’s peaks and valleys, from celebrating joyous occasions with the perfect petals to commemorating a final goodbye with a distinctive funeral arrangement. But farming is clearly the Fayette County resident’s passion. She and her husband, Gary, farm 1,500 acres of beans and corn at their Bloomingburg homestead. As a child, she helped her father Charles Cunningham in his work at the Dr. Heinz Company feed mill. “Farmers raise the food to feed America,” she says, “and we’re proud of it.” Beekman’s dedication to farming and the initiatives she’s involved with have not gone unnoticed. In 2020, she became the first woman inducted into the Fayette County Agricultural Hall of Fame. Launched in 2001, the Ag Hall of Fame recognizes and honors those who have made outstanding contributions to farming or an agriculturally related field. Beekman’s talents encompass a variety of endeavors. She’s served as a member of the Fayette County Farm Bureau’s board of directors; has conducted leadership and training meetings with local and state farm bureau organizations; and can be found lending a hand serving cookies and apple cider during harvest time. Beekman is also a proud recipient of the organization’s 35-year service award. At Jeffersonville United Methodist Church, she serves on the mission committee and collects school supplies for area children. “Robin is very selfless in everything she does,”

Robin is very selfless in everything she does. — Ken Ford, Agricultural Educator, The Ohio State University

says Ken Ford, agricultural educator for the Ohio State University Extension in Fayette County. “She loves the county, would do anything that would benefit agriculture here and has never wavered in her devotion to the Farm Bureau. To own her own business and be involved in as many activities as she is, is a tremendous accomplishment.” “Sometimes,” he adds with a smile, “I wonder when she has time to sleep.”

Anglers will also love casting a line at Washington Park in Washington Court House — look for special fishing derby events during the summer. From here, take the 1.4-mile walking loop that connects to Eyman Park, where you’ll find a playground and restored 1940s-era train that kids will love. Birdwatchers and wildlife lovers: don’t miss Shaw Wetland, which features a vernal pool that attracts frogs, toads and other pond-loving creatures. Stroll the boardwalk through the wetland and keep your eyes peeled for waterbirds, shorebirds and more. Those looking to book some tee time can tackle the gently rolling slopes of the Buckeye Hills Country Club, the beautiful-but-challenging Deer Creek State Park Golf Course or the manicured 9-hole course at The Greens of Fayette County Park District. fayette county visitors guide

Blazing Trails There’s no better way to enjoy a sampling of Fayette County’s landscape than by taking a bike ride or jog on the Paint Creek Recreational Trail, a paved path created on a long-abandoned B&O Railroad line. The 34.8-mile trail kicks off in Washington Court House and meanders through wide-open spaces, quaint and scenic farmlands, shady wooded areas and small towns that make for perfect pit stops. Along the way, look for a covered bridge over Shepard’s Run and end your ride in Chillicothe with a visit to the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, where early American Indians made their home some 2,000 years ago.

Downtown Washington Court House

season by the

Each season brings with it an opportunity to explore the ever-evolving natural beauty and unforgettable experiences found in Fayette County. No matter what weather the seasons bring, we have activities that will get your blood pumping and can’t-miss events that hit the right chord. by laura watilo blake photo by joe guard photography

Fayette County gets in the spirit with holiday events, such as the annual Christmas parade in Washington Court House. Kids jockey for a glimpse of Santa, who brings up the rear of the parade line atop a red fire truck to wish you a merry Christmas. Downtown Live is another signature event, where window shopping takes on a whole new meaning. Live mannequins come to life and entertain the crowds as they browse for Christmas gifts. There’s also live music, carolers, a Kids Zone with rides and bounce houses, and even a scavenger hunt that yields some enviable prizes. When being outside just isn’t an option, try lacing up some skates and getting your blood pumping at Roller Haven Fun Center, which has been on a roll since 1948. Go bowling at LeElla Lanes, where you can chow down on pizza while you wait your turn to knock down some pins. Or, if you prefer the arts to sports, let the talented instructors at White Fence Gallery bring out your inner artist. At the end of class, you can take home a masterpiece that’s all your own.

Spring

Once winter’s mantle lifts, migratory birds arrive on the wind, passing through to breeding grounds in Canada. Bring your binoculars to witness the birds’ migration in places like Shaw Wetlands, the cedar grove of Madison Mills Cemetery and Deer Creek Wildlife Area. Geocaching is another fun way to get the family outside. The Fayette County Historical Trail has stashed away 13 geocaches,

each pertaining to historically significant people, places and events. Seek them all out while uncovering the area lore, such as how Cry Baby Bridge got its name and who has a genealogical connection to Barack Obama. Find all the caches to win a commemorative coin. Washington Court House beckons come rain or shine. Browse for treasure in the town’s many antique and home décor shops. Start on East Court Street and wrap up on Hinde Street at North Shore Primitives & Antiques, located in a big red barn. Along the way, you’ll uncover one-of-a-kind items and rare collectibles you didn’t know you needed, but can’t live without. Whether it’s your first time or you’re reliving the golden age of arcade gaming, Game On Arcade is the place to play classic video games, such as Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. Better yet, the old-school fun comes with retro pricing.

Summer

Eyman Park Splash Pad

As the days heat up, the Jeffersonville Pool becomes the place to meet up with friends and take a flying leap into the cool blue water. The pool hosts several community parties and even stays open late during the Fourth of July. A new splash pad at Eyman Park offers more spray play, not to mention fishing in the trout-stocked ponds and a paved trail for walking or biking. For those looking to go the distance, the Paint Creek Recreational Trail connects Washington Court House with Frankfort and Chillicothe on 34.8 miles of a former railbed. The county hosts several events in the summer that attract a crowd. The Toast to Summer & Hot Air Balloon Glow in late June makes the Fayette County Airport buzz all day (and not just from the Ohio wine) with biplane rides and live music. Then, as the sun sinks over the horizon, hot air balloons light up the night sky like giant colorful light bulbs. In late July, the week-long Fayette County Fair elicits playful screams from ride-goers, while the unforgettable aroma of fried fair food fills the air. The packed schedule includes a rodeo, harness racing, a stock truck and tractor pull and demolition derby.

Fall

In autumn, trees bursting with shades of amber, orange and crimson hem Fayette County’s patchwork landscape, to the delight of leaf peepers. Immerse yourself in the fall color along the Paint Creek Recreational Trail, driving through Deer Creek State Park or while following the Historical Markers Driving Tour created by the Fayette County Historical Society. Time your visit right by checking the weekly fall foliage updates posted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources at fallcolor.ohiodnr.gov. The fall event season kicks off the third weekend in September when the Scarecrow Festival takes over downtown Washington Court House. The three-day event includes family friendly amusements, rides and entertainment from a stellar lineup of musical acts. In October, take a moonlit hayride to the Washington Cemetery, where some of the permanent residents resurrect to recount the stories of their lives. The following

ayette County is rich with history – even its name has a connection to a historical figure. Marquis de Lafayette was a French general who helped the colonists during the Revolutionary War. Local veterans of that same war are honored at Jeffersonville Area Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Jeffersonville. This contemplative,

dramatic black-slab memorial lists the names of 1,140 local veterans up through the current day. Another point of great pride in the area is Bloomingburg Presbyterian Church. It was founded in 1818 (the present building was built in 1847), and was the center of abolition and Underground Railroad fayette county visitors guide

activities in the area. It was aided by the local African American community members including Joseph Stillgess, a “conductor” who helped transport Freedom Seekers in a spring wagon. A literal railroad once ran through the county as well – the B&O line (Baltimore and Ohio). In 1960, local attorney Richard Rankin decided that since the B&O railroad was so important to the county, he wanted to bring a B&O engine back to the area to put on display in 1960. “A B&O locomotive was requested, but none were available,” Bob Russell, who serves on the board of directors at the Fayette County Historical Society, explains. “But C&O [Chesapeake and Ohio] responded that they had surplus locomotives available, and on September 4, 1960, that engine and tender [storage and supply car] arrived.” They were put on display in Washington Court House’s Eyman Park, which is named for Jesse Eyman, an area farmer in the county’s early years.

Washington Court House was also where, in the late 1800s, Granville T. Woods invented the inductor telegraph, which revolutionized the rail industry by identifying the location of trains, improving scheduling and decreasing railway deaths. A historical marker in honor of Woods, known at the time as “The Black Edison,” stands in the park. After a B&O caboose was added in 1982 and a fence in 2010, Russell says, “the Railroad Preservation Society of Fayette County was formed. They restored [the grouping], replaced parts, manufactured parts and decorate it

at the holidays.” A signalman’s shanty was added, a small wooden building that previously stood at a crossing on Court Street. The signalman would step out and hold up a stop sign to warn traffic when a train was approaching. Visitors can see the actual stop sign at the Fayette County Historical Museum in Washington Court House. The museum is the Morris Sharp mansion, built in 1875 by a local farmer and banker and presently operated by an allvolunteer, 14-member Board of Trustees. Be sure to explore the museum for even more Fayette County history.
