Some routes to the Hocking Hills are more rewarding than others. From Columbus and the John Glenn Columbus International Airport, take U.S. Route 33 to State Route 664. From Cleveland, follow I-71S to State Route 37E. From Cincinnati, take State Route 32, also known as the James A. Rhodes Appalachian Highway.

To Love is to Take Care
The Hocking Hills region is home to hundreds of species, from ferns to warblers to butterflies to deer. For centuries, human visitors have also enjoyed the land, and while it is free to explore the trails, waterfalls and caves, visitors do shoulder a responsibility. It’s up to each visitor to protect the natural features. The good news? Taking care of the parks is easy, and the benefits will last for centuries. The “Love Hocking Hills” pledge directs visitors to take only pictures and leave only footprints, to etch memories, not trees, to pick up after pets and carry out what you carry in.
I will do my homework and visit prepared.
I will dress to be prepared, not dress to impress.
I will stay on the trails at ALL times.
I will etch my memory, not the trees or caves.
I will take only pictures and leave only footprints.
I will remain in one piece by leaving wildlife in peace.
I will scoop the poop, pick up after my pooch and carry it out.
I will play nice with fellow visitors.
I will camp only on permitted surfaces and be responsible with my campfire.
I will be part of the solution, not the pollution.
To declare your love and be part of the solution (not the pollution), visit LoveHockingHills.com to take the pledge.

Hike the Hills
If you’re in search of peaceful trails winding through hemlock-shaded gorges, between impressive sandstone cliffs and past glimmering waterfalls, start your journey at the Hocking Hills State Park Visitor Center. The center goes beyond offering paper maps to help you navigate the region (though they have those, too). An interactive display allows you to pick routes based on difficulty level or accessibility needs, and a tactile map gives you a sense of the region’s topography. Questions about a trail or curious what plants you might see along the way? Ask one of the on-site naturalists. Hocking Hills park officers are dedicated to helping visitors enjoy the beauty of the region, while also protecting and honoring the environment.
Looking to go that extra mile? Give back to the Hocking Hills by participating in trail clean-ups, community outreach projects and special events through the Love Hocking Hills volunteer campaign. Check out the website at LoveHockingHills.com to stay informed and get in touch to maximize your impact.
Deepen your experience at the park by taking part in some of the regularly scheduled nature programs, led by naturalists who love to help educate others about the area’s flora and fauna. Meet rescued raptors, join naturalist-led hikes, participate in nature-centric arts and crafts sessions, or gather for a critter chat where experts share fun facts about the animals you may come across while exploring.

Meet THE
Neighbors
A number of diverse businesses are flourishing in the Hocking Hills, led by some of the region’s most familiar faces. Both locals and visitors love to make stops at these places to chat with the friendly owners and enjoy the welcoming environments inside.
Walk into Flowers by Darlene in downtown Logan, and you’ll likely be greeted by a friendly cat who may well cross the room to say hello. “His name is Jack. He lives here and thinks he owns the place,” says Darlene Savely, proprietor of the store since 2005, who will likely greet you just as quickly as Jack. Far more than flowers are for sale in this sizable establishment — everything from porcelain teacups and teapots to quilts, handcrafted birdhouses, wreaths and handmade doilies. There are also plentiful wall hangings inscribed with whimsical expressions like “Life is Short. Lick the Spoon.” Darlene will sit down with customers looking for floral arrangements at a large dining room table in the shop’s center to determine what they’re looking for. “Everything we do here is customized according to the customer’s wishes,” Darlene says. By far the most popular arrangements are fresh-cut flowers sorted for contrast in depth and color, all expertly arranged by Darlene, who’s been in the business for more than 40 years. Darlene advises people who walk past her shop after hours to keep an eye open for Jack in the front window. “At night, Jack has been known to wave high fives to people going by,” she laughs.

Five generations of the Saving family have operated Saving Hardware, which celebrated its 75th anniversary this past October (2024) in downtown Logan. According to current proprietor Steve Saving, customers will find everything they might expect in his full-service store, items like paint, tools and home improvement and building supplies. But there’s so much more — other items include cutlery, wildflower honey, metal wash tubs and even pitchforks. “And if we don’t have something on hand, we can always custom order it from our catalog of 34,000 items,” Steve says. Customers are charmed by the vintage feel of the store with its hardwood floors, pressed tin ceiling, a cash register from the 1940s and a
manually operated elevator. As part of its anniversary, the store underwent a remodel with new shelving able to hold lots of new merchandise. “We gave the place a makeover,” Steve says. “There’s a brand-new look inside but with that same vintage feel.” To add to the nostalgia, antique signs and tools, as well as old-time photos found in the basement, are now on display throughout the store. What really distinguishes his store from big-box establishments, though, is the superior customer service people can expect. “The reason we’re here is our customers,” says Steve. “Just stop and ask one of us to help you and we’ll get what you need just as fast as we can.”
Gifts of L ve
On a winding country road surrounded by forest, two rustic cabins stand side by side — the home of three unique shops, beckoning you to come inside. At Christmas Treasures, not surprisingly, there are all manner of holiday ornaments, but unusual finds include Christmas trolls, hand-carved nativity sets and even a 3-foot-high Christmas stocking that stands on the ground. Next door at Hocking Hills Candleworks, the enticing aromas draw visitors inside where they’re astonished by 170 completely different scents, including butterscotch, magnolia and warm apple pie, or even unusual fragrances like ginger ale, baby powder and grandpa’s pipe. At the adjacent Wind Chime shop, consider sitting on the porch swing out front and listening to the music coming from within before
entering and finding everything from a 4-foot chime resembling the sounds of cathedral bells to 6-inch chimes that tinkle-tinkle their way into your heart. Judy Hard and her late husband, Mike, purchased the property in 2007. Judy says that Mike’s real passion was for the candle shop, where he loved making the candles himself. To honor that love today, visitors can enroll in candlemaking classes to build a custom three-scent blend. Although a few visitors may happen on these unique shops by chance, most often they’ve heard about them from social media or word of mouth. “The businesses in this area look out for each other and are happy to tell our guests other places they should visit,” Judy says. A resident of the area for 24 years, she has nothing but good words to say about the allure of the Hocking Hills.
Fresh From the rchard
Passersby may very well be enticed to pull into the Laurelville Fruit Farm by the giant mural of juicy red apples on the building’s exterior painted by Chillicothe artist Pamela Kellough. Once inside, they’ll be captivated by the rustic simplicity of the place, adorned with dozens of huge wasp nests for decoration, not to mention two gleaming cash registers circa 1917 that still work. Owner Bob Bowers is the third generation of proprietors who’ve overseen the business since 1911, growing apples, peaches, cherries and plums at their nearby orchard, then selling them at the brickand-mortar storefront in Laurelville. Bowers says the most popular apple varieties they sell are Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious and EverCrisp, but what people really clamor for are the gallons of cider and glasses of award-winning cider slushies that are available after Labor Day. “Those slushies are so popular, people want them even if it’s snowing outside,” Bob says. The peaches he sells are Red Haven, an old, all-purpose variety good for canning, freezing or just plain snacking. “There are newer varieties available, but I still think Red Havens are the best,” Bob comments. He’s happy to be a part of the Laurelville community, a small town where he says people still look out for each other. He likes to refer to the Hocking Hills as the “Little Smokies,” a place that attracts visitors from afar but that’s still isolated and peaceful. “Even with the number of tourists who visit us, it’s still a quiet, laid-back place,” he says.
Stock Up & Stay Awhile
Grandma Faye’s, a combination grocery store and souvenir shop just down the road from Old Man’s Cave, has achieved almost iconic status in the Hocking Hills over the years. According to Stephanie Rigsby, daughter of owner Dave Seymour, “many folks tell us it’s not a trip to the Hocking Hills without a stop at Grandma Faye’s.”
That might be because the store carries a little of everything — grocery supplies like canned goods and prepared foods as well as camping supplies. The array of souvenirs is especially eclectic, with everything from T-shirts and sweatshirts to stuffed animals, rocks and crystals. You can even pick up a Himalayan salt lamp and a Bigfoot thermos bottle. An onsite deli offers fare like footlong Italian subs, pepperoni pizza bites and fried bologna sandwiches. “Our giant Texas tenderloin has been a favorite for years, and our chicken salad is also extremely popular — it’s homemade from a recipe of my late mother’s, Sherry Seymour,” Stephanie says. But perhaps the top reason customers return year after year is the devoted staff who work at the store and who love the place just as much as the people who shop there do. “Most of the ladies who work here have been with us for years. Our manager, Amy, has been part of our family since 1994,” Stephanie says. “I love that Grandma Faye’s is one big family.”
Dishing Out Delicious
All manner of bric-a-brac adorns the walls and counters at M & M Family Diner, a fixture in Logan since 2006. There’s everything from Ohio State Buckeye pennants to a reproduction of a Norman Rockwell painting to a cow cookie jar and even a leg lamp. “Everything has a story associated with it,” says owner Michelle Bourne. “Many are gifts from customers.” But even though there are many statues and caricatures of M&M’s candies scattered through the restaurant, the real M & Ms for whom the restaurant is named are Michelle and her husband, Marvin Bourne. Their sons, Brent and Aaron Cooke — who also work here — make this a family diner in yet another sense.
In her 40 years in the restaurant business, Michelle has cooked up some very popular items. Her beef barley soup was so beloved by one customer, he’d go out into the street and insist passersby come in and try it. “I make the best Reuben sandwich you’ll ever have, and people also rave about our meatloaf and cabbage rolls,” Michelle says. “If it’s not excellent, I don’t serve it,” she adds. And it shows — regulars at the diner include both Logan residents and visitors who return year after year. Wherever they come from, Michelle feels the same sense of gratitude: “It’s a dream come true for me to have customers who come back again and again.”

SWings of Wonder
Follow the butterflies over and through the Hills along this drive-it-yourself trail.
By Jamie Rhein
tarting in spring and throughout summer when flowers are in bloom, butterflies are the fluttering stars on the Hocking Hills Butterfly Trail
Along the trail’s 35 miles that fan from U.S. Route 33, pollinator gardens, prairies, wetlands, marshes and leafy woodlands play host to these delicate beauties.
Start your butterfly spotting journey at the Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center
Here you can pick up a glossy butterfly trail brochure with its map of the 14 trail stops and butterfly wing photo ops, plus the butterfly passport to check off each stop.
A free coloring book features each of the butterfly species highlighted along the trail.
As a monarch waystation, the welcome center also happens to be the first trail stop.
Take in the gardens around the center, then become a butterfly yourself posing in front of human-size monarch wings.
Head to Logan to check off several stops close together. A community garden, the fairgrounds, the hospital, the high school and The Bowen House — Logan’s community arts center — are other nearby stops. Look for the butterfly gardens and humansize wings of different species at each. For instance, you’ll find the spicebush swallowtail wings outside the south entrance of Bishop Educational Gardens in Rockbridge. Visit during Lilyfest, an art-meetsnature festival each July, when the gardens and trails are open to the public. Also in Rockbridge, Butterfly Ridge is a 21-acre nature center where butterflies thrive in explorable habitats from checkerboarded woodlands to gardens to trails.
