Earth to nature lovers: There’s a wild world of wetlands, trails, boating and animal encounters open for exploration throughout Stark County and right in Canton. If birding is your jam, there’s a raptor preserve for that. If biking is your best way to de-stress, miles of Towpath Trail double as exercise and therapeutic forest bathing. Towing along kids? The iconic Towpath Trail runs through the heart of the Ohio & Erie Canalway, with visitor centers along the way that celebrate its culture, history and preservation as a destination for more than 2.5 million Americans. From 1827 to 1913, mules pulled canal boats of passengers and goods up and down the canal. Today, it’s a way to retrace those steps.
Meanwhile, an accessible fishing pier, boat and kayak ramps and a park perfect for picnicking make Sippo Lake Marina a seaworthy spot to spend an afternoon. (The marina sells night crawlers but not fishing licenses.) You can even rent canoes, kayaks, standup paddleboards and pedal boats. The 25th President of the United States, William McKinley launched his law career, and married future First Lady Ida McKinley, in Canton.
Seven-time MLB All-Star catcher Thurman Munson led the New York Yankees to three consecutive World Series championships, 1976–1978, before dying in a tragic plane crash. Fans can pay respects to the legend at his gravesite in Canton’s Sunset Hills Memory Gardens or attend a ball game at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.
NBA ballers from Stark include journeyman center Kosta Koufos and former Cleveland Cavalier Eric Snow, for whom the Downtown Canton YMCA branch is named.
Football heroes hail from Stark, including offensive tackle and sportscaster Dan Dierdorf and Marion Motley, one of the first black players in the NFL.
Motley is honored, both with a statue at the Hall of Fame and a mural — part of The Eleven, a series of public art installations commemorating gridiron history. Cleveland Browns founder, Paul Brown, began his coaching career in Massillon. Learn more about Brown’s innovations at his namesake exhibit, located within Massillon Museum.
HALL OF FAME CITY
The history of professional football is entwined with Canton. In 1920, 10 teams convened here to form the American Professional Football Association — later the NFL. One was the Canton Bulldogs — a powerhouse club that won championships in 1922 and 1923. That history, and an organizing effort by locals, made the city the natural choice when the Pro Football Hall of Fame was created in 1961.

Next year marks America’s semiquincentennial! In other words, it’s the 250th birthday of the founding of our nation. If you’re looking for some ways to mark this historic milestone, Stark County’s got you covered. The Ohio Commission for the U.S. semiquincentennial is establishing six experiential trails that will link historic sites across the state. The first of these is The Ohio Air and Space Trail. Visit two sites near Stark County: MAPS Air Museum (Military Aviation Preservation Society), which features over 55 types of aircraft and over 130 displays of historical artifacts and interactive exhibits, and Wingfoot Lake State Park, which was Goodyear’s blimp manufacturing site in 1916 and is now an 811-acre state park.
Experience the Ohio and Erie Canal as it was traversed years ago on the St. Helena III Canal Boat, from historic downtown Canal Fulton to Lock 4 Park and back.
The 2-mile, one-hour round trip is narrated by an on-board historian while the boat is pulled by a pair of draft horses. To experience modes of transportation (slightly) more modern than draft horses, the Canton Classic Car Museum has a thoughtfully curated collection of over 40 rare and unusual autos, enhanced by historical memorabilia including toys, photos, steam engines, movie posters and more.

Massillon Museum
The transcontinental Lincoln Highway, one of the first designed specifically for automobiles, runs through Stark County — two stretches are even still paved with the original bricks, a rare sight today. In addition, one of the only three remaining concrete marker posts in Ohio, installed by the Boy Scouts in 1928, is in East Canton’s portion of the highway.
Even more history is represented, along with art, at the Massillon Museum. The museum celebrates the town’s history and hosts art workshops and events. The First Ladies National Historic Site in Canton encompasses the childhood home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley, First Ladies Park and the Visitors Center, along with the National First Ladies Library & Museum. There’s a research library, galleries, a Victorian theater, gift shop and more. Stop in at Crossroads United Methodist Church, a Gothic-style building built in 1883 and on the National Register of Historic Places. The church became President McKinley’s spiritual home when he moved to Canton in 1867 (when it was Church of the Savior United Methodist Church) and held his funeral there following his 1901 assassination. It still contains the McKinley family pew and a stained-glass memorial window commissioned by Ida McKinley.
Whether a golfer or not, the Clearview Golf Club is a must-visit part of national history. The now-18-hole course opened as a 9-hole in 1948. It was built by hand by Marcella and William “Bill” Powell and is the only course designed, built, owned and operated by an African American. It’s also a designated National Historic Site.

The Massillon Women’s Club was founded in 1919 by Massillon women Red Cross workers during the first World War. Today, in addition to holding the activities of the stillactive club, the stately stone mansion is often rented for weddings and other events.
The Spring Hill Historic Home & Underground Railroad Site is another must-see, built by Quakers Charity and Thomas Rotch in 1811 and then lived in by three generations of the Wales Family. The Massillon home is located on 16 acres and includes original outbuildings and wooded trails. A tour of the house shows visitors the hidden staircase used on the Underground Railroad.
Near Canton is the Haines House Underground Railroad Museum in Alliance. Nancy and John Grant, Quakers, were abolitionists who built the home their daughter and son-inlaw, Sarah and Ridgeway Haines, eventually operated as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The now-museum features a restored mid-Victorian kitchen and parlor, and the attic in which enslaved people hid on their escape to freedom.
Don’t miss the Hoover Historical Center, owned by Walsh University. Located in a Victorian home on original Hoover Family farmland, the historical center houses antique Hoover vacuums and takes visitors through the evolution of floor care and related advertising.
