KNOX COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2022–2023
We are delighted that you have chosen Knox County for your next adventure. Our open roads and open spaces offer some unexpected surprises — and each holds an experience of its own that will excite any traveler. To connect with Knox County is in part to connect with the whispering voice in us all. A call to find what’s around the corner and to seek out new adventures in the making. Knox County is equal parts unplugging and plugging in. A spring of energy. Fuel for those recreating and re-creating. A confluence of culture, entertainment and opportunity. It’s meant to be explored. Savored. Peddled on and paddled through. For many, a piece has always been here, waiting for reunion. For others, Knox is an unexpected gift, continuously revealing and reinventing itself with each bend in the river or opening night. Perhaps it’s the similarity to the hometown of our youth that connects with us. The pursuit of a passion or dream that draws us in. Or maybe just the melodic contours of the rolling hills, rocking us back into a rhythm we didn’t realize we’d lost. No matter how it begins, the result is the same. Knox County is where your heart returns home. We’re glad you’re here.

PICNIC LIKE A
pro BY KATHARINE STEVENS
Building a picnic requires two basic ingredients: a savory spread and a lovely location. Bring a blanket and a basket, and you’ll find the rest in Knox County.
FILL YOUR BASKET
Every good picnic starts with delicious food. Pick up perfectly plump fruits all season at Miller’s Farm Market & Greenhouse, with strawberries and peaches in June, sour cherries in July and ruddy apples in autumn. The Mount Vernon Farmers Market, open Saturdays May through October, has myriad produce options in every color, from Wesco Produce’s cucumbers and peppers to Green Valley sweet corn to black raspberries from Knox Berry Farm. Elevate your picnic to perfection with pretzels to dip in Ann’s Raspberry Farm’s Savory Brussels Sprout Relish – a two-time Good Food Award Winner.

SPREAD YOUR BLANKET
Next, pick your venue! Named for the locally endangered Eastern Hellbender, Hellbender Preserve has great picnic spots on the beaches of Jelloway Creek. After you eat, search for buckeyes or snap a picture of the Instagram-worthy railroad tunnel. Your kids will love the children’s natural play area at Wolf Run Regional Park, and your pup will love the nearly 2-acre bark park. After a healthy lunch, explore the downed tree “balance beams,” tree stump stairs and an all-natural teeter totter. Once you’ve snacked under shady sycamores at Indianfield Bluffs Park, hike up the bluff for stunning views of the Kokosing River or find Cedar Waxwing Island, named for the sociable birds that frequent the island. For a peaceful excursion, opt for a prarie-side lunch at Kokosing Nature Preserve.

KNOX COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2022–2023
In every corner of Knox County, you’ll find beloved signature dishes to dig into. The Kenyon Inn and Restaurant in Gambier is known for its expert take on the classic Reuben sandwich, layering house-braised corned beef brisket, Ohio-made Guggisberg baby Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island on a swirled pumpernickel and rye bread. Also in Gambier, The Village Inn serves up gourmet pub fare fit for even the heartiest of appetites. Stick with a classic black & bleu burger or be a little more adventurous and try an island-inspired jerk burger. Either way, a side of fresh-cut fries is non-negotiable. Visit the Howard Hilton in Howard early in the week for their fan-favorite Taco Tuesday nights, with plenty of tacos, loaded nachos and ice-cold drinks on hand. Mazza’s in Mount Vernon is known for its flavorful, freshly tossed “Famous Mazza Salad,” which you can order as a side, as a whole entrée or even on top of a pizza! Before your dinner reservation, find a seat at The Library bar in the handsomely appointed Alcove Restaurant & Lounge and sip on The Bookworm: Piper Sonoma Brut, house grenadine and fresh citrus. Enjoy pizza pies straight from the oven at the Pizzaburg or fresh, pillowy kolaches from Kolacheez Coffee Bar in Centerburg, situated right along the Heart of Ohio Trail. The Hangout in Danville really lives up to its name, a favorite spot for locals, especially on halfprice burger night every Tuesday. In addition to delicious pizza, you’ll receive a warm welcome from the owners and staff of the Mount Vernon Amato’s Woodfired Pizza.

What s’ Cooking WITH
CHEF NAV Chef Navin Ajodhya — known as Chef Nav — owns Half Baked Cafe, Cindy’s Pierogis and Georgetown BBQ in downtown Mount Vernon with his wife Rebecca. We asked him to share his story as a restauranteur and his favorite local eats. Q:
How did you end up running three different eateries?
A:
I can’t help myself. My wife Rebecca, the boss lady, wanted to get out and do our own thing, so in 2015 we started a food truck called Trucking Delicious. In 2019 we opened Half Baked Cafe in downtown Mount Vernon, serving scratch-made quiches, brunch, pastries and custom cakes. In 2020, an opportunity in the space next to the bake shop popped up, so we’re opening Cindy’s Pierogis — my wife’s side is Eastern European — and Georgetown BBQ doing Caribbean curries and traditional smoked meats.

the majestic Woodward Opera House — America’s oldest authentic 19th century theater. Owner David Stein takes pride in offering a variety of brews, from the crisp Becca Bluberry Kolsch to a rich and creamy Black Cyclone IPA. “It’s so rewarding to see the look on customers’ faces and their surprise when they fall in love with something outside their taste norm,” Stein says. Just around the block, Happy Street Brü Werks, a small-batch, grain-to-glass brewery offers bold profiles like the Schmohop IPA and Choconut Stout. Grab a spot on the spacious patio or inside the breezy open-air taproom to enjoy live music from regional acts. Take a sip on the wild side at Mount Vernon Brewing Company and order an IPA, a red ale or one of the fruity Shebella seltzers. Admire works from local artists on display as you sip your brew, plus purchase your favorite piece to take home. If you’d rather wine the day away, head to Taigan Hills in Danville. Enjoy wine by the glass or bottle on the patio. On the menu you’ll find locally crafted wines in a wide range of varietals including a dry red Frontenac,
Long Shot, and sweet rosé blend, Fancy Poodle. Come for the wines and stay for a stroll among the 200 scenic acres at Indian Bear Winery in Walhonding. On the two-story back deck, which features stunning views of the land, you’ll see why owner Sherri Lechner and her husband found inspiration here. “We chose Knox County because of its beauty and central location,” says Lechner. Pair your views with the sweet and fruit-forward Blackberry Crush or crisp white American Vidal Blanc. Not ready to leave? Check out the on-site Indian Bear Lodge.

FREDERICKTOWN Karen Susi specifically chose Fredericktown as the place to open Brickhouse Grind, a coffee shop and art center, with co-owner Jenn Wilson because of the thriving community. “The Fredericktown community is so friendly. Almost every week we get customers who decide to buy a gift card to leave behind to pay for the next ten customers’ drinks. It’s amazing. For visitors, I recommend ordering The Brickhouse Mocha and then visiting other local businesses.”

CENTERBURG Gloria Parsisson’s family has lived in Centerburg for seven generations (and counting!). She serves on multiple community boards and plans to write a book about Centerburg history. “Centerburg is small, rural and friendly. I’d recommend visiting the Hometown Market. They have a very broad and interesting collection of beer, and every other month they do a beer tasting. They also regularly host food trucks — check their Facebook for the schedule. Visitors should also check out the Centerburg Public Library — ask to see the history collection! They have old photos and artifacts.”

HOWARD/APPLE VALLEY Jason Huffman has been shaping up Howard/Apple Valley since opening his own barbershop, Lakeside Barber and Shave Parlor. He loves connecting with the diverse community. “Our community is one of the prettiest places in Ohio, and you can do a lot here without a lot of money. Visiting Apple Valley Lake is a must!”
GAMBIER MOUNT VERNON Hanna Cullers Ford was born and raised in Knox County. Though she and her high school sweetheart moved away to attend The Ohio State University, they eventually returned to their hometown and haven’t looked back since! “Mount Vernon just keeps getting cooler. From parks to breweries to kid-friendly activities, we have it all. I love Memorial Park because of the baby-friendly playground and “Mommy and Me” swing. ArielFoundation Park has amazing walking trails and my husband fishes there. We also love our local breweries — Happy Street Brü Werks and Mount Vernon Brewing Company.”
Morgan Giles, an attorney for Giles Law Group LLC, has called Gambier home since 2012. “Gambier is a beautiful, small community with engaged citizens. I enjoy visiting the Village Inn and Wiggin Street Coffee, and walking Kenyon College’s campus, where people come from all over the world to learn. Take the scenic route in Knox County by hitting one of the region’s three paved, multi-purpose trails. BY JILL SELL With paved trails that wind through small towns, farmland, forests and wetland, adventure in Knox County is limitless. The county’s interconnecting routes, Heart of Ohio Trail (HOOT), Mohican Valley Trail and the Kokosing Gap Trail (KGT) are accessible by bike, rollerblades and cross-country skis — though of course, walking and running is common, too.
Whichever method you choose, you’re sure to find inspiration in the towering trees, wildflowers and songbirds along the way. On the Mohican Valley Trail, you might also see horses and buggies. KGT Board President Randy Cronk says, “My favorite parts of the Kokosing Gap Trail are the large trestle bridges where I often stop to look at the river and what is reflected — fall colors, blue sky or the sunrise.” When you need a break from pedaling, make a pit stop by the “I Heart KGT” sculpture at the Mount Vernon terminus of the 14-mile KGT. Installed in 2021 to celebrate the KGT’s 30th anniversary, this bike-themed sculpture is the perfect photo-op — tag #IheartKGT and #bikeknoxohio when you post.
FILL YOUR TIRES

KNOX COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2022–2023
Knox County is a mecca for art lovers who enjoy galleries filled with a variety of mediums. Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Schnormeier Gallery, located on the first floor of the Buchwald Center, features an ever-changing collection of art. One month, you might see a college student’s debut show, while another month the work of a nationally recognized artist takes over the space. For the chance to see new works and mingle with artists, attend the First Friday receptions during Experience Mount Vernon’s First Friday event held each month. Located in the heart of the Kenyon College campus in Gambier, the Gund Gallery serves as a centerpiece for contemporary art, hosting eight to 10 exhibitions a year
highlighting the talents of artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. The gallery is open to the public and hosts an annual spring student and faculty showcase, as well as formal and informal learning experiences for everyone. Since 2009, the family-owned and -operated Coleman Family Gallery and Galerie Suite has showcased intricate handblown glass works and fine art. If you’re hoping for a weekend steeped in art, consider booking The Galerie Suite Airbnb in downtown Mount Vernon, a cozy Parisian style suite located above the gallery (learn more on page 33).

There’s something for everyone at Kokosing Valley, and kids are encouraged to let loose and enjoy being kids. “We focus on catering to families with children,” says owner Persophone Gilmore. “With swimming, putt-putt, canoeing and playing in the river, there’s constant motion here.” You can shoot hoops on the paved basketball court or look for a cornhole tournament where you can meet and compete
with other families. Win bragging rights at the nine-hole miniature golf course or rent some clubs and have a blast hitting golf balls into the lake at the range. For an added challenge, try to hit the canoe! Memorial Day through Labor Day, add a sweet treat to your visit with Kokosing Valley’s hand-dipped ice cream. It’s easy for families to get in a full day of fun at Kokosing Valley, but if you don’t want the adventure to end, extend your visit by camping on-site May through October. As the largest campground on the river, there’s plenty of space to stay and play.

Kokosing Nature Preserve A Natural Burial Cemetery

The community is encouraged to enjoy the mowed walking paths at Kokosing Nature Preserve.
Kokosing Nature Preserve is a conservation burial ground located at 10620 Quarry Chapel Road in Gambier, Ohio. Established in 2015 by the Philander Chase Conservancy, Kenyon College’s land trust, the preserve offers a natural burial option on twentythree acres of native prairie and woodlands. Natural burial (also called green burial) is a growing trend but harkens back to a centuries-old tradition, emphasizing simplicity and a return to nature. In a natural burial, the body is placed in a biodegradable coffin or shroud, and is interred without the use of embalming fluid or a concrete burial vault. Over time, the gravesite returns to its undisturbed state, covered in prairie grasses and wildflowers, surrounded by trees and rolling farmland.
Kokosing Nature Preserve is a wonderful place to see a wide variety of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife.
Kokosing Nature Preserve also accepts cremated remains for burial or scattering. Anyone who is interested in being interred at the preserve may purchase interment rights in advance or at the time of need. Kokosing Nature Preserve is non-sectarian and committed to all principles of non-discrimination. The preserve is open every day, from dawn to dusk, and offers a park-like setting with mowed walking paths for all to enjoy the peacefulness and the beauty of the space. Thomas Bailey Aldrich

A Century
in the making BY RICH WARREN
Long-time businesses in Mount Vernon’s historic downtown just keep getting better with age. Williams Flowers and Wine, celebrating its centennial in 2022, has been a mainstay in Mount Vernon for so long that current owner Lori Amstutz says it’s common for customers to stop in and say things like “We got flowers for our wedding here, and now it’s our 50th anniversary!” Nowadays, customers can also purchase potted plants, wines from around the world, chocolates, greeting cards and gifts. “We talk to every customer to get a good idea of what they want so that we can capture the desired style and feel in each design,” Amstutz says. Just a block away, The Alcove Restaurant & Lounge is another of the city’s heritage businesses. When it opened in 1911, the restaurant was an ice cream and candy shop called Candyland but began transitioning to a sit-down restaurant in the 1920s.

Today, The Alcove has undergone an extensive redesign with a focus on elegance — complete with crystal chandeliers, oil paintings, customdesigned wallpaper and plush wool carpeting. The upscale menu features prime rib and a wildly popular crispy chicken sandwich. Across the street, a light green farmhouse complete with Gothic windows and Victorian bric-a-brac has been home to the Woolson Company, a general mercantile store, since 1897. Historical records show its original inventory included flour, whiskey and even dynamite alongside the signature coffee, tea and spices. Nowadays the gift store stocks items like teas, honey, cups and soaps. Current owner Larry Woolson is the fourth-generation owner. “We’re one of the oldest retail stores in the country still in the same family,” he says. “And my children will be the fifthgeneration owners.” While the Woodward Opera House has not been in continuous operation, it’s the oldest authentic 19th-century theater in the country. When it opened in 1851, it was the site of vaudeville performances, minstrel acts and lectures. After restorations that included replications of the chandeliers, wallpaper and even the original paint colors, the theater welcomes musical and theatrical productions to the stage, carrying its legacy into the 21st century.
