PROPS, PISTONS & HOPS FEST JULY 2022

y mother grew up afraid of the water — she never learned how to swim. When she met my father, she discovered a family that spent summer vacations on the lake — swimming, water skiing, tubing, fishing and taking advantage of the best that the great outdoors has to offer. When I was born, she signed me up for swimming lessons as soon as possible, determined to give me a sense of comfort in the water that she never had. Little did she know that she sparked a love that would last a lifetime. To this day, I truly believe that life is better at the lake. I’m Rachel Hagenbaugh, the proud new editor of Lake Erie Living Magazine. As a lifelong boater and lover of Lake Erie, it is my honor to take on this role and bring you face to face with everything that this magnificent slice of paradise has to offer. In this region, we are lucky to have such an amazing asset at our fingertips. Whether you’re a thrill seeker, nature lover, antiquer, angler, boater, bookworm, wine connoisseur, microbrew fan or all of the above, our Great Lake is chock-full of amazing adventures, from day trips to long weekends and beyond. That’s what this year’s Lake Erie Living Travel Guide is all about — discovering your best Lake Erie. Throughout this issue, we highlight more than 100 ways to shake off your cabin fever and soak up some much needed vitamin D and freshwater breezes. If your plan is to hit the beaches, we’ve got you covered with a variety of places to dine, shop and stay. From rooftop patios and locally owned boutiques to hiking trails, ziplining and walking, driving and kayaking tours — not to mention cozy B&Bs and private lakefront cottages — the possibilities are endless. Looking for even more ideas to add to your itinerary? Before you set sail on your next coastal cruise, check out our new website, launching this spring!

Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line launches its newest and largest vessel in April to accommodate a demand for more Lake Erie waterway travel. By Kristen Hampshire

T

he ferry docks are bustling with a notable uptick in demand for travel across Lake Erie to Kelleys Island. “We have seen increased business in the last five years, and we literally haul people from sunup to sundown,” says Capt. Eddie Ehrbar, Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line, Marblehead. In spring, the ferry line can accommodate 148 more passengers and up to 36 vehicles aboard the new Carmen Lee, the fifth and largest vessel — and a custom build for the company, which acquired its latest vessels after the purchase of Neuman’s Kelleys Island Ferry in 2002. The 168-foot Carmen Lee models the ferry service’s flagship Shirley Irene, with a main deck of high-strength steel that can handle cars and equipment. Plus, the ship is not a traditional twin-screw vessel like the others in the fleet. “It goes back and forth and never needs to turn around, and there is a ramp on each end of the boat,” Ehrbar says of the twin-disc hydraulic clutches. TAI Engineers designed the Carmen Lee, along with S&B Infrastructure, whose president Danny Rios said in a release that the vessel is designed to “help improve transportation, mobility and accessibility for the Lorain Port and Finance Authority and Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line.” 10 Lake Erie Living Travel Guide 2022

The Lorain Port and Finance Authority helped facilitate funding to build the ferry as the local government partner agency. “This is a way to help enhance the waterway transportation system in the Great Lakes,” says Tiffany McClelland, assistant director. “Regionally, this means that Lake Erie will be better able to handle the demand of service to the islands.” Construction of the Carmen Lee began in fall 2018, and the ferry will set sail when the season opens April 15, though Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line operates vessels all day, yearround. Ehrbar expects the 2022 island travel uptick to continue. “During COVID-19, we have been busier than ever with more people staying closer to home for vacations and visiting Kelleys Island,” he says. “We are looking forward to having another vessel to move traffic more frequently and faster.” One-way fares range from free for kids 4 and younger to $11 for adults, $18 for cars, $9 for motorcycles and $4 for bikes. “No matter what boat you get on, it’s the same price,” Ehrbar says. The Carmen Lee will travel every half-hour from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with an off-season schedule to be determined. For more information on tickets, as well as ferry schedules, visit kelleysislandferry.com.

Check out other ways to get to and from the Lake Erie Islands. Jet Express

This fleet of high-speed passenger ferries offers direct routes from Port Clinton to Put-in-Bay, as well as from Sandusky to Cedar Point and Kelleys Island. Miller Ferries

Departing from the end of state Route 53 on Catawba Island, Miller Ferries offers passenger and vehicle service to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island. In 2021, Miller Ferries launched a new vessel, the Mary Ann Market, which provides service between the mainland and Put-in-Bay and is able to transport 600 passengers and 28 vehicles. Ready for Take-Off

P

ack your patience and remember to bring a mask. Air travel has picked up, and Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport is recovering at 72% of pre-pandemic travel, ahead of the national average of 69%. Air traffic returned to 84% in December. “Passengers need to be flexible because the rules are changing,” says Robert Kennedy, director of Port Control for the city of Cleveland. “We’ve seen it over the last three years with CDC requirements — and across the industry, we are focused on health and safety.” One important point to understand: “The requirement to wear masks is a federal security directive,” Kennedy emphasizes of the rule’s importance so air travel can remain safe and secure.

From masking to carrying a vaccination card, here’s what you need to know before booking a flight and boarding for upcoming travel. By Kristen Hampshire

As waves of COVID-19 ebb and flow, restrictions will evolve in the best interest of travelers, airport staff, pilots and crew members. As you’re planning travel to Lake Erie’s beaches, islands and other destinations, Kennedy explains what is necessary to board and offers pointers so you can prepare.

processing for an extra $60 is five to seven weeks, and the time begins upon receiving a passport application (not the mail date).

CHECK — AND DOUBLE CHECK “Flight crews can get exposed to COVID-19 just like everyone else, so

always check your flight before you go to make sure it is on time because there could be a crew resource issue,” Kennedy says. “Remember, there may be something going on in the background that is for your safety and health that is causing a delay — but not a tremendous delay.”

MASK UP

Children ages 2 and younger are not required to wear a face mask, but everyone else is inside the airport facility. “In parking decks, taxi stands and on the curb, you are good without a mask,” Kennedy says, adding that many taxis, shuttles, limos and Uber and Lyft drivers ask passengers to wear face coverings. Specifically, masks should be cloth or 3-ply paper — no gaiters or makeshift masks that are less protective. Masks can be removed only while actively eating or drinking, and social distancing is always encouraged.

DIAL INTO THE DESTINATION

Domestic travel does not require vaccination, but the rules for immunization, testing and quarantine are different if you’ll be flying internationally. “Check with the country and find out whether a vaccination or testing is required,” Kennedy says, adding that some countries ask for testing 74 hours before boarding and others want a test within 24 hours of take-off. Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport offers testing at its health facility called Tackl, located on the ticketing level.

BRING YOUR CARD

Are you vaccinated? Bring your card along. “I traveled over the holidays and brought my card because I went to restaurants in New York City and was required to show proof of vaccination,” Kennedy shares. So, just because the airport does not ask to see your vaccination card for domestic travel, attractions and restaurants at your Lake Erie destination might.

PLAN AHEAD FOR PASSPORTS

As of October 2021, the U.S. Department of State announced routine passports taking eight to 11 weeks to process. Expedited lakeerieliving.com 13

Lake Erie Islands

Put-in-Bay, Your Way The Key West of the North offers a festive island vibe that’s packed with family fun, casual dining, a lively bar scene, fascinating history and captivating Lake Erie views. “There is so much going on — great food, wonderful shops and fun attractions, so if you want lots of options, you’ll find it at Put-in-Bay,” says Jill Bauer, public relations manager of Shores & Islands Ohio.

Ohio

Plenty at Port Clinton Ride bikes to get a great view of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

DINE PIB STYLE:

If cocktail umbrellas and walleye bites are on your list, the Keys’ (thekeyspib.com) waterfront with boardwalk seating and live entertainment delivers. The Boardwalk and the Upper Deck (the-boardwalk.com) offers views for miles and renowned lobster bisque. The Forge (theforgepib.com) crepe restaurant serves up unexpected, delicate fare that’s not just for breakfast. Meanwhile, Goat Soup & Whiskey (soupandwhiskey.com) introduces from-scratch farm-totable plates enhanced with the property’s garden-grown herbs and veggies, along with a generous whiskey drink menu, microbrews and more.

GET BUSY:

Take the elevator 352 feet to the top of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial (nps.gov/pevi). Rent a jet ski at Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rentals (pibjetski.com) or stick to land and board the Put-in-Bay Tour Train (putinbaytrans.com) — an hourlong open-air trolley guided ride.

LAURA WATILO BLAKE

STAY AWHILE:

Bayshore Resort (bayshoreresortpib.com) offers water views, two pools, a tiki bar and modern rooms. “It’s close to the monument and downtown — it’s nice for families,” Bauer says. For larger groups, Put-in-Bay Condos’ units can sleep up to 12 people (putinbaycondos.com).

A sidewalk stretches along the Lake Erie beaches of Port Clinton, where there are park benches for watching the waves and sunsets, and a walkable downtown is peppered with boutiques and dining destinations. A silver lining of the pandemic is Meals on Madison — a pedestrian-only hot spot with picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and space to gather for live music and outdoor dining. “Now, it’s an outdoor entertainment area all summer long,” Bauer says, noting activities that include farmers market Sundays to weekday children’s activities. “Port Clinton is the quintessential beach town where you can park in one place, go to the beach — it’s all right there along the coastline.” EAT LOCAL:

Bootleggers Waterfront Grille & Bar is where to go for locally caught fish and brew — and priceless views. A bamboo bar, cocktails, beach and a view of the lake and islands is what makes Docks Beach House (docksbeachhouse. com) a must. For a taste of Lake Erie, order yellow perch and a side of housemade onion rings at Jolly Roger’s Seafood House. Downtown, pair a pint with a shepherd’s pie or corned beef and cabbage at McCarthy’s Irish Pub (mccarthysirishpubpc.com) or enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail with lunch or dinner at Rosie’s Bar & Grill (rosiesbarandgrillpc.com).

MUCH TO DO:

The western basin of Lake Erie is known for having the world’s best walleye fishing — and Blue Sky Charters (blueskycharters. net) will help you cast off. Nothing will compare to the pics you’ll snap at African Safari Wildlife Park (africansafariwildlifepark.com), which offers drive-through or walkable experiences with animal encounters. Ever paddleboard with a goat? Hop on at Portage River Paddling Co. (portageriverpaddlingco.com), where you also can take out a kayak, canoe or pedal boat, or take a guided tour from Port Clinton to Oak Harbor.

Happiness in Huron Nestled along an 8-mile stretch of Lake Erie’s south shore, Huron is known for waterfront dining, shopping, parks, beaches and marinas. “We are a small community with big options to enjoy, including our diverse amount of dining and what we like to call ‘watering holes,’ ” says Amy Roldan, executive director of the Huron Chamber of Commerce. “Whether you come by car, boat, scooter, bike or golf cart, we invite you to come and see us.”

Venture to Vermilion Postcard-perfect Vermilion has all of the charm of a New England-style seaside village transported to the shores of Lake Erie. Before it became the tourist-friendly community it is today, Vermilion was a busy commercial harbor and center for shipbuilding. Nautical influences still prevail here, where on a pleasant summer day, as many boats cruise up and down the Vermilion River as cars on its flower-lined Main Street. Changes to Vermilion’s waterfront are ongoing. Redevelopment plans for Main Street Beach (cityofvermilion.com/visitors/main-street-beach) include new public restrooms, changing rooms, a snack bar and more parking and seating areas.

No matter what you’re hungry for, Huron will satisfy every appetite. Specialties of the house at Costa Azul Mexican Restaurant (costaazulmexican.com) include fajitas, burritos and chimichangas. Famous for such house specials as prime rib and filet mignon, The Angry Bull Steakhouse (angrybullsteakhouse.com) also features a generous assortment of seafood on the menu, including coldwater lobster and Alaskan King Crab — and of course, Lake Erie perch. Since 1991, Huron Pizza House (pizzahousehuron. com) has been the place to partake in America’s universal pie, as well as calzones, pasta, subs and salads.

NATURAL ESCAPE:

It’s easy to see why birders make a beeline for the 472-acre Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve (ohiodnr. gov). More than 300 species visit the preserve, one of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of shoreline. Known for its large walleye population, as well as rock, smallmouth and white bass, and yellow perch, Lake Erie has earned the reputation of being an angler’s paradise. The mile-long fishing pier at Huron Pier and Lighthouse is famous for great catches year-round. Walkers, runners and bikers will enjoy the 1.2-mile-long Lake Shore Electric Trail. During summer months, enjoy outdoor activities at the Huron Boat Basin & Amphitheater (cityofhuron.org).

PRIVATE RENTALS:

Located on a private beach 7.6 miles from Cedar Point, Willow Grove Lake House (airbnb.com/ rooms/43274145), an Airbnb accommodation, provides the ideal family getaway. The house, which sleeps eight, is 200 yards from the lake and features a hot tub and grill. Beach N’ Peaks Lake House (byowner. com/vacation-rentalsdetails/house/-2057469), a private rental, is located about 10 minutes from Cedar Point. This newly built waterfront homestead sleeps 13 and includes more than 2,300 square feet of space, including a patio and fire pit and access to a private beach.

TOURIST-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY:

Downtown Vermilion is extremely walkable. Within a few blocks, you can shop at local boutiques, such as the Silly Goose and nautical-themed Erie & Anchor (erieandanchor.com). Go on a scavenger hunt to locate Main Street Vermilion’s vintage postcard murals, peruse artwork at the Vermilion Arts Guild Gallery (mainstreetvermilion.org/artsguild) or grab some ice cream and hit Main Street Beach. Finally, you can’t visit without getting out on the water, whether it’s renting a kayak from West River Paddling Co. (westriverkayak.com) or cruising aboard the Mystic Belle paddleboat (donparsonsmarina.com/mysticbelle).

DINING DESTINATIONS:

Families love casual dining at Woodstock Cafe (woodstockcafeandcoffee.com) and Big Ed’s Main Street Soda Grill for its burgers and shakes. Dock-anddine options include Quaker Steak & Lube (thelube.com) and Huggy’s Social House, not to mention Chez François (chezfrancois.com), one of the top places in the country for French-style cuisine. Housed in a former sail loft, the restaurant has a dress code in the main dining room, but the riverfront cafe and Touche Bistro are more casual.

VILLAGE OF LAKE CAPTAINS:

Vermilion was once known as the “Village of Lake Captains” since so many ship captains built opulent homes near the port. Two of these homes now welcome guests for overnight stays. The Captain Gilchrist Guesthouse (gilchristguesthouse.com) serves up a home-cooked breakfast and views of Lake Erie, while the Captain Bell House (captainbellhouse.com) has several spacious suites, each with its own kitchen. Breakfast is provided by Granny Joe’s Restaurant a block away.

MICHIGAN

MEET ME IN MONROE

Located midway between Toledo and Detroit, Monroe is an underrated gem. It’s home to William C. Sterling State Park (2.dnr.state.mi.us) — Michigan’s only state park on Lake Erie — with more than a mile of sandy beach, plus boating, fishing and bird-watching. Grab a coveted spot on the waterfront deck of the Clamdigger, a favorite dockand-dine spot that serves a legendary mashed potato pizza with creamy mashed potatoes, smothered in cheddar cheese with bacon bits on a garlic and Parmesan-infused crust. Try the surf-and-turf options at the Quarry Modern Eatery (thequarrymoderneatery.com), which perches on the edge of a 333-acre spring-fed quarry. The Public House (publichousemonroe.com) is a great downtown spot for a meal and craft beer, plus afternoon tea service by reservation. Finally, don’t let the gas station setting fool you; the Eureka Eatery (eurekaeatery.com) has the best Nashville-style hot chicken in Southeast Michigan. A changing rotation of

over-the-top milkshakes will cut the heat. William C. Sterling State Park attracts people year-round, whether it’s for ice fishing in the winter, spotting birds during the spring and fall migration or swimming, fishing, kayaking and boating in the summer. By boat, you’ll discover hidden beaches and spots accessible only by water. On land, explore the River Raisin Heritage Trail (monroemi.gov) by bike. Close to the state park, you’ll find the River Raisin National Battlefield Park, the only national park marking a site of the War of 1812. You can absorb more history at the Monroe County Museum and the Navarre-Anderson Tradition Post. William C. Sterling State Park has a popular and busy campground, which recently added 10 waterfront cottages that sleep up to seven people. In addition to a full bathroom and kitchen, each cottage has a screened-in porch oriented to the rising sun over Lake Erie. For a more boutique hotel experience, Hotel Sterling has large suites with luxurious touches, housed in a posh historic building in downtown Monroe with cafes, shops and museums within walking distance.

Marblehead Lighthouse

A

lthough the same lighthouse has shown the way around the rocky shores of the Marblehead peninsula for two centuries, it really didn’t start to resemble its current state until the late 1800s. In 1822, Benajah Wolcott, who was reported as the first keeper of the lighthouse, then referred to as the Sandusky Bay Lighthouse, kept a home on the lighthouse property so that he could tend to what was then a whale-oil light. His family also had a limestone house about two-and-a-half miles away. After its first half-century, the lighthouse and adjacent keeper’s house were getting a little long in the tooth. In fact, the home was 48

in such disrepair that the keeper at the time, George McGee, had constructed a one-room shack and was living in that with his family. “The house is not habitable in cold weather and is unfit for use as a dwelling at any time,” an inspector wrote in 1878. Within two years, construction had started on a new home, which had seven rooms and a basement, and could accommodate not just a keeper, but an assistant as well for what was becoming one of the most important lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It was also one of the most dangerous spots on the Great Lakes, with a variety of shipwrecks and groundings. In 1876, a Life-Saving Station was built near the lighthouse, two years before

the creation of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, a forerunner to the Coast Guard, which took over lighthouse operation after World War II. The lighthouse is automated today, and it remains a popular tourist attraction — as well as one of the most photographed landmarks in Ohio. The nearby keeper’s house is now a museum, housing a variety of memorabilia, including the Fresnel lens that guided ships for decades. In 2016, a replica of the life-saving station was built on the property, and 2 miles away is Wolcott’s family home. The keeper’s house is the oldest residence still standing in Ottawa County. — Vince Guerrieri
