Welcome

L

akewood is an ideal place to call home, pursue a career and enjoy life. With our proximity to Downtown Cleveland, picturesque location on Lake Erie, historic homes, high-quality city services, shops, arts and restaurants, there is truly something for everyone. In this edition of Destination Lakewood, we highlight some of the ways you can enjoy this beautiful city as a visitor, the opportunities to work and do business here and the special things that make Lakewood a fantastic place to find your forever home. Our city’s unique and thriving small businesses see themselves as more than just a way to make a profit. These local entrepreneurs are deeply involved in Lakewood, supporting causes and volunteering their time and skills with Lakewood nonprofits, the Lakewood recreation program and our outstanding schools. Last fall, I had the opportunity to view the Sixth Grade Business Project Symposium,

4 Lakewood {2023}

in which students interviewed and worked with local business leaders to learn more about business math and how to apply it in their studies. The projects presented at the symposium were creative and a result of the collaboration between our young people and entrepreneurs who were willing to volunteer their time. This is just one example of how our local business community goes the extra mile. The City of Lakewood is committed to supporting our entrepreneur community. Businesses everywhere have faced some big challenges over the past few years. In response, City Hall developed a small

business rent relief program to provide some breathing room for those who set up shop in Lakewood. The city was able to assist 227 businesses through this program, protecting a vital part of what makes Lakewood so special. I hope you enjoy learning more about our great city in these pages, and I look forward to seeing you in Lakewood soon.

This past spring, we mourned the passing of Patty Ryan, longtime CEO & president of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, who retired last year due to illness. Patty always had a passion for education and enjoyed awarding Chamber scholarships to college-bound seniors with a great work ethic. To carry on her legacy, we created the Patty Ryan Memorial Scholarship that will be awarded in her memory each year at Taste of Lakewood. Proceeds from Taste of Lakewood and special Dollars for Scholars raffles make these scholarships possible. This year’s recipient was Lauren Barber from Lakewood High School. Lauren is headed to the University of Pennsylvania this fall to study engineering.

LAKEWOOD ART SUPPLY

LAKEWOOD ART SUPPLY / MAGICALLY FOUND

When the Olson family relocated to Lakewood from their home state of Texas, they found everything they had been envisioning in an adopted hometown — a uniquely diverse, urban, walkable community on a Great Lake. Well, almost everything. “Lakewood just really ticked off a lot of the boxes when we talked about where we wanted to live. We really loved it,” says Galadriel Olson, an art teacher. Her husband, Kevin Olson, is an accomplished illustrator, screen printer and oil painter. “We’re a family of artists, and we were looking for an art supply store, and we couldn’t find one. We kind of joked at first that maybe we should open our store.” That joke turned into reality in January 2022, when the Olsons opened Lakewood Art Supply, an inspired shop for fine art supplies, including markers, pens, pencils, paints, clay, sketchbooks and paper and screen printing supplies. You’ll also find

kids’ art supplies and crafts along with yarn, embroidery floss and beads — all arranged in rainbow order. In fact, Lakewood Art Supply even sports a signature rainbow floor. “What would an art supply store be without a rainbow floor? You can’t really be sad if you’re walking on a rainbow,” Galadriel says. “That’s been super fun, and we have people that come in just to take pictures of the floor.” The Olsons have been overwhelmed by the support from the local community and neighboring small businesses. “We’re just really super happy that we landed in the spot that we landed in on Madison, because the other small businesses have been so incredibly supportive,” she says. “I can’t even express the amount of gratitude for everyone coming in and supporting small businesses. That was really one of the reasons why we love Lakewood so much.” 13345 Madison Ave., lakewoodartsupply.com

MAGICALLY FOUND

One of Rebecca DeNoewer’s favorite things is watching people discover vintage home decor items in her store, aptly named Magically Found, which she describes as having a “witchy cottage-core vibe.” “I love when people come in and they get really excited when they find this thing that they didn’t know they were looking for, or maybe they knew they were looking for and they just hadn’t found it yet,” DeNoewer says. “Like you magically found it — that item was meant to be a part of your home.” Magically Found also features a lot of local artists specializing in flower arts, ceramics, stained glass and wood burning. “I’m not even the new kid on the block anymore,” DeNoewer says of her business that opened earlier this year. “The foot traffic is really amazing. It doesn’t matter what kind of day it is — there’s always people out and walking by, and definitely people wander in all the time. It’s been really great so far.” 13349 Madison Ave. www.lakewoodchamber.org | www.lakewoodoh.gov 9

“There are so many other people like me who really enjoy kawaii and anime. It’s more than just a hobby; it’s part of what inspires us, what motivates us,” Rizek says. “It’s just really a magical space.” Open since December 2022, Doki Doki hosts a variety of monthly events, including tea parties, Pokémon trading card game nights and its Magical Girl series, which focuses on self-care and self-love. “The cool thing about my shop is typically, if you find a hobby store, usually you don’t find something that’s centered on women and queer folks,” she says. “My shop absolutely is, because it’s really important to me to make our space inclusive and welcoming.” Rizek also offers private shopping times by reservation for those who are neurodivergent and become overstimulated or anxious in a typical store setting.

“We’re a legit neighborhood toy store,” Hlywiak says. “Every year we grow, and the reason why we picked Lakewood is we live here, we love Lakewood and it’s also got a high concentration of families. The Birdtown area was kind of like untapped at that point when we opened, and then all these other really cool specialty shops started popping up around us.” Singleton has been a toy appraiser for a long time and has even been called to consult on Guinness Book of World record collections. Much like its online presence of Keep Cleveland Creepy, Oktober’s is the brick-and-mortar portal for all things metaphysical and occult. “Anyone who doesn’t know what that means, and that’s most of my family,” jokes Owner Jessica Oktober, “it’s crystals, candles, magical herbs, oils, books, incense and jewelry,” among other things. “We offer Tarot readings, Lenormand, astrology, Reiki healing sessions and spirit medium readings. We have readers seven days a week.” Celebrating four years in business this fall, Oktober’s sells more than 180 types of crystals and features handmade wares from local artists, in addition to specialty items from other states. “I make all of the magical oils and sprays, and we make a lot of the jewelry in-house,” says Oktober. Oktober’s recently expanded into an adjacent storefront, creating a new event space with Victorian furniture and a marble bar. The space has been booked for birthday parties, divorce parties, book signings and fundraisers. “We’ve expanded, which means we get to help more people,” Oktober says. “We

get to talk to more customers, have more classes, have bigger classes, have more events. I’m always working on new stuff to try to let people know that there’s magical help where they might need it.” 12611 Madison Ave., keepclevelandcreepy.com

The show must go on. Not only have live stage performances continued, but so have educational classes and camps during the recent building and renovations at Beck Center for the Arts. Lucinda “Cindy” Einhouse, Beck Center’s president and CEO, credits Turner Construction Co. for doing the “noisiest work at 6:30 a.m., before anyone is here.” Einhouse is also grateful for the performing and visual artists and instructors who are patient with a little construction dust on their ballet shoes and canvases. In this most recent building portion of Beck Center’s $6.7 million Raise the Roof Campaign, the northwest corner of the main building was gutted. The former gallery room and second floor space is transforming into the Litzler Dance Studio, dressing room and additional restrooms. Also look for a new, fully accessible front entrance and marquee, a new roof and an enlarged pocket park open to the public. (There have been a few surprises during construction, including a hidden sprinkler system once used for a small garden space that no longer exits. It was removed before any water damage could occur.)

CAKE: LALA CUSTOM CAKE / GOURLIE: RAYANNE MEDFORD

LaLa Custom Cake Leah Gourlie, owner of LaLa Custom Cake, takes “cake culture in America” very seriously. Gourlie calls cakes “artistic centerpieces” that people gather around. She knows that photographs of special cakes, including wedding cakes, will forever be part of someone’s albums and memories. But Gourlie’s work also includes the whimsical. Her staff has created a red apple-shaped cake complete with a friendly green worm and a cheeseburger cake with lettuce and tomato that look almost real. She also recently made a Statue of Liberty cake. Gourlie, a Johnson and Wales University culinary graduate, opened her bakery

in 2016, after a diverse work history. She was chef for a bed and breakfast in California, at several fine dining restaurants and for a convent, making scones and muffins for nuns. Today her savory culinary skills plus her focus on sweet treats have given her an advantage. “We do tons of custom flavors,” says Gourlie, whose shop creates all its ingredients,

An exqusite loaf of artisan bread, the most elaborate wedding cakes and more — Lakewood’s bakeries offer it all. In particular, sweet lovers have plenty of choices, including cupcakes, eclairs, crepes and more. And with numerous vegan, vegetarian and glutenfree options, everyone gets dessert.

including batter, buttercream, fruit compote and caramel. “My own personal favorite flavor is caramel raspberry, because it’s sweet and tart. I always make sure our potential wedding cake customers taste it.” LaLa Custom Cake offers a custom flavor builder on its website, where clients can choose from a variety of cake flavors, buttercream, fillings and add-ons. Sometimes enthusiastic customers will order a cake with chocolate, peanut butter and caramel flavors — a combination of which Gourlie wholeheartedly approves. “But then maybe they will pick a peppermint frosting. We’ll ask if they are sure that’s what they want and also maybe offer them a little direction,” says Gourlie. In addition to cakes, the bakery offers cupcakes for walk-in purchase and other special order small desserts. 15301 Madison Ave., lalacustomcake.com

Brewella's Coffee, Crepes and Collectibles woman whose name graces the shop. Brewella would probably love all the shop’s crepes — especially its bestseller, Nutella and strawberries (also available with bananas). Other sweet crepes include: lemon sugar; chocolate, peanut butter and banana; s’mores; and grahammy’s PB&J. Murphy’s favorite is the French toast crepe, “scrambled egg on top, butter, cinnamon and sugar and a side of maple syrup.” Savory crepe choices are available, too. The shop is also becoming known for its authentic, homemade alfajores. The shortbread sandwich cookies, filled with dulce de leche (caramelized milk) and decorated with coconut and sugar on the rim, are made by Keppler’s mother, who is from Argentina. “These cookies are something else, and some people buy as many as they can,” says Murphy.

CREPE: BREWELLA’S / MURPHY: RAYANNE MEDFORD

Can something to eat or drink be too sweet? Chris Murphy and Joe Keppler, coowners of Brewella’s Coffee, Crepes and Collectibles, answered that question five years ago. Their first-year Halloween crepe creation of Cookies and Scream Cream (a concoction of marshmallows, Oreos and other ingredients Murphy would prefer to keep secret) was tooth-achingly sweet. “It will never make a comeback, but its memory is our reference for anything new we try. As long as it’s not as sweet as that, it’s good,” says Murphy. That standard must be working, because today Brewella’s is outgrowing its space, and the business owners are looking for larger quarters in Lakewood. Currently, there are 20 inside seats, which Murphy describes as “a little tight, but cozy.” No matter when and where they move, no doubt Murphy will first consult with Brewella, a fictional character envisioned as a much-loved, vibrant, maybe somewhat eccentric, older

bakers. It came naturally to me, and I have a huge sweet tooth,” says Bosworth. “My daughter, Marianne, also joined me to help with marketing, and she’s responsible for the popularity of our macarons.” (Creme brulee, almond raspberry and vanilla bean are some flavorful favorites.) Bosworth has never shied away from a challenge. For her son’s fifth grade graduation, she made a 5-foot-wide cake that included figures of every child, made from gum paste (a sweet, edible sugar dough that hardens). Bosworth also made a specialty cake for the younger son of NBA superstar LeBron James, which she delivered to their home. “We have a great staff here,” Bosworthnotes, adding that her employees are artists more than anything else. “I am good at coming up with recipes, but they execute things that are really unique.” 13519 Detroit Ave., kb-confections.com

Eating a big breakfast before you go to work may be key to working at KB Confections. Otherwise, it’s pretty hard to resist the bakery’s tempting raspberry truffle cake, cinnamon buns and much-loved brownie cheesecake, according to Owner Karen Bosworth, who opened the bakery 11 years ago. The family-owned business began in Bosworth’s home where no one could eat at the dining room table because it was the holding station for multiple cakes ready for pickup. Celebration cakes and wedding cakes still take center stage today at the shop, but cupcakes and custom cookies are also popular. Specialty cake flavors include Boston crème, chocolate truffle, coconut and cookies and cream, among others. Premium flavors include key lime, cassata, carrot, mocha and more. { SWEET TREATS }

CAKES: FROSTY’S / SIGN: RAYANNE MEDFORD

Frosty’s Cake and Ice Cream By August, pumpkin spice is back on the soft serve menu at Frosty’s Cake and Ice Cream. Owner Amanda Orlando’s customers ask for the flavor starting in summer, eagerly awaiting its return. Its intense popularity is based on its deliciousness and also the fact that, like every other treat in the shop, it is 100% vegan. Frosty’s rotates its flavors of both soft serve (go for passion fruit) and ice cream scoops (try the coffee chip). “We have people coming from all over for the vegan soft serve. I had no idea what a cult following it had,” says Orlando, who opened her shop in June 2022 after a career as a cake decorator. Taking her inspiration from kids’ birthday parties, where cake and ice cream “just go together,” Frosty’s was born. Cake-by-the-slice is the shop’s specialty, including those with over-the-top flavors. Classic flavors (think vanilla bean, almond, lemon, funfetti and chocolate)

“stand the test of time, and are absolutely delicious,” according to Orlando. But she says her staff likes it when people give the bakery unique flavor requests. Her deluxe cake/cupcake flavors include raspberry coconut zinger, s’mores, deluxe cookie dough, lemon blueberry, maple pecan and chocolate pretzel praline. “My personal favorite is funfetti. I am a kid at heart,” says Orlando. “I love everything with sprinkles.” Custom cakes and case cakes are available. Cake sizes range from 4-inch round (serving two to four people) to as-manypeople-as-you-want size. That request is usually filled with a large cake and coordinating cupcakes used as individual servings. The bakery’s name came from Orlando’s love of “all things Christmas.” She figured “Frosty” was a nostalgic name that would appeal to both children and adults. “We’re a small business,” Orlando says. “It’s a neighborhood, towny shop where

everything is made from scratch (including hot fudge and caramel sauces, plus fresh waffle cones) out of the finest ingredients. And we found the perfect spot here in Lakewood.” 13343 Madison Ave., facebook.com/frostyslakewood

PECAN ROLLS: BLACKBIRD BAKING CO. / CLARKS: RAYANNE MEDFORD

Blackbird Baking Co. Baker Tom Clark’s first love is bread. And why not? It’s a major staple around the world and can be a common comfort food or an exquisite luxury. Clark and his wife, Adria Clark, are co-owners of Blackbird Baking Co., which opened in 2009. They continue to feature amazing breads that include country blonde, rye, wheat, kalamata olive, challah, ciabatta, focaccia and more. The breads do not include dough conditioners, chemicals or additives. “I wasn’t much of a pastry guy at all,” confesses Tom, who came back to his hometown of Lakewood to open his shop after gaining experience in several Portland, Oregon, bakeries. “But since we opened the business, we now offer a little bit of everything.” That includes the hugely popular chocolate chip cookies, plus other madefrom-scratch pastries and top-shelf coffee.

The success of those items was something Tom “didn’t see coming,” being a lifelong bread man, but the best ingredients help contribute to the bakery’s success, including European butter and free-range eggs from Ohio Amish farms. Sweet-filled croissants have earned bragging rights and include almond, apricot jam (Adria’s favorite), chocolate batons and raspberry. Savory croissants include ham and cheese plus spinach and feta options, as well a classic butter croissant. “I am a purist. I like a plain croissants and plain baguettes. Those are the most challenging to make because there is nothing to hide behind,” says Tom. “If you have a really good croissant or bread, it speaks to how well it was made.” 1391 Sloane Ave., blackbirdbaking.com

AinDAY the CITY Dining, shopping, recreation and more – we’ve mapped out a perfect day to explore all that Lakewood has to offer. By Leslie Basalla-McCafferty From the east end to the west end and back, Lakewood invites exploration. With its multitude of small businesses, it’s scarcely an exaggeration to say that there is something interesting, including eateries, shops and entertainment venues, around every corner. Making a day of visiting Lakewood’s myriad attractions is easy — just choose your own adventure from this itinerary — it’s a mere slice of what the city has to offer.

BREAKFAST Borderline Cafe

Starting days off right is a family affair at Borderline Cafe, where sisters Kelly and Carrie Wright have been dishing up a breakfast fiesta for 30 years. The pair even took inspiration for the cafe’s Southwest-accented menu from close to home. “My aunt Jean had this awesome recipe for salsa that she always served us when we were at her house, with eggs and black beans,” Kelly says. “Now, you can get a breakfast burrito everywhere, but 30 years ago, (Southwestern cuisine) really wasn’t part of the makeup of the restaurant scene around here. We thought we’d fill that little gap.” These days, the menu includes three different varieties of huevos rancheros and a fan favorite bacon-avocado Benedict, alongside traditional morning fare. “We make every single thing there from scratch — every salsa, every sauce, every filling,” Kelly says. “If you order an egg, we’re going to crack it right before you eat.” TRY IT: Chorizo Tacos. Crispy corn shells are stuffed with savory chorizo, scrambled eggs and sharp cheddar and topped off with housemade taco sauce, roasted corn jalapeno relish and cilantro lime sour cream.

Dinerbar on Clifton Visitors to Dinerbar on Clifton will find no shortage of breakfast delights like hefty omelets, pancakes and corned beef hash. Morning-appropriate libations are also on hand at all hours. Belly up to the retromodern diner’s stainless steel-trimmed bar for a Bloody Mary or mimosa — the guiding principle here is that it doesn’t have to be Sunday to brunch it up. TRY IT: Dana’s Egg White Scramble. Turkey, spinach, onion, feta and mushrooms are served up with with crispy home fries and your choice of toast.

Need to make someone’s day, or maybe just your own? Pop into CouCou Sentiment for “snarky-sassy” (as Owner Danielle Zann puts it) greeting cards, gifts and party supplies. “Cou cou” is informal French for “hey there, hello,” and Zann says the phrase reflects the inspiration that led her to open the shop. “Whenever I was invited to something, I would always need these little last-minute things; I was always searching for something that would make the person feel special,” she says. “The goal with the shop is to be the easy, one-stop shop to find a couple of things to really send the message — that’s where you get the sentiment part.” 17409 Detroit Ave., coucousentiment.com

Geiger’s

Got the urge to get outdoors, but missing the gear? Go to Geiger’s. Four generations of the Geiger family have been outfitting Lakewood with sporting and outdoor goods since 1932. Co-owner Gordon Geiger credits that longevity to service and willingness to change with the times. “We adapt. Obviously, there wasn’t pickleball 80 years ago,” Geiger says. “You have to listen to your customers, and you have to take care of your customers. We still provide a high, high level of service, helping people figure out what they need and want.”

I earned my first degree at Tri-C® At Tri-C, Rebecca Groth discovered she has what it takes to succeed in college Rebecca was skeptical about college. She knew she was smart, but didn’t know if the college experience would be right for her. Then she came to Tri-C, where she quickly discovered a valuable support network of faculty, staff and fellow students who not only helped her succeed academically — they helped her find a purpose and a future.

LUNCH Angelo’s Pizza

ANGELO’S PIZZA / HOLA TACOS

When lunchtime rolls around, aim for Angelo’s. This mainstay has been dishing its distinctive pies since 1981. Angelo’s pizza stands out with a crust that “fries” to a crispy finish in well-oiled pans. Aside from the pizzas, which consistently top local popularity polls, families flock to Angelo’s for its appetizers, salads with housemade dressings and generous portions of pasta. TRY IT: Philly Cheesesteak Pizza. This pie features homemade traditional pizza sauce, provolone, onions, green peppers, mushrooms and U.S. Choice slow-roasted ribeye steak.

Reclining in a patio chair at Hola Tacos, you could be forgiven for forgetting you’re in Ohio — or anywhere north of the border. A converted ice cream stand, Hola’s laid back, Latin American vibe wouldn’t be out of place in a town square in Oaxaca or on a Baja beach. The menu is compact by design, says Owner/Operator Juan Vergara, but big on flavor. “Every single sauce we make in-house with fresh chiles and spices,” he says. “Every single meat is braised in-house as well. Everything is made fresh — that’s why it’s a small menu.” All tacos come on preservative- and GMO-free corn tortillas. The same tortillas, fried up whole, serve as the chips that accompany Hola’s chile morita salsa, guacamole and queso. Wash it all down with a Jarritos fruit soda or Mexican Coke.

TRY IT: Tacos Al Pastor. These tacos are filled with delicious chile-marinated pork and fresh-cut pineapple, topped with cilantro and onions.

Skill Building

Unique programs in the school district are helping students master important life skills. By Ruth Corradi Beach

S

LAKEWOOD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

tudents in Lakewood City Schools have access to novel ways of learning important state standard skills like real-world math, communication and interviewing practices. Two programs in the district in particular — one for sixth graders and one for seniors — connect students with small business owners in order to teach these lifelong lessons. Math in Business Sixth-grade students at Harding Middle School participate in a program called Mathematical Thinking in the Business Community, which culminates in a symposium where students share their work. The program is now in its third year. The classes (approximately 150 students this year) are divided into groups of three or four, with each group assigned to study a small business in Lakewood. Math teacher Stephen Kerney explains: “The students research the business and write questions about mathematical practices, based off the eight standards of mathematical practices we learn about in class, like ‘How do you use precision in your business?’ ‘What kinds of graphs do you use?’ ‘What kinds of math patterns do you see in your business?’” Students record their interviews, which their teachers then review. Then,

students learn from local graphic designers and copywriters about how to create an infographic. Results are presented at a symposium in October, which is attended by students, families, many of the business owners and the mayor, who also appears on an informative video that kicks off the sixweek program. “Students learn how businesses use mathematical principles to make their business succeed. They see how math in the real world is a living, active response to what a business owner faces,” Kerney says. “It’s also a beautiful example of the vibrancy of the Lakewood Community — a small community with lots of microbusinesses and business owners eager to share their time and expertise with our students.” Practical Communication At Lakewood High School, seniors have the opportunity to take a semester course called Practical Communication. The inclusion language arts course, in its ninth year, is team-taught by intervention specialist Aimee Guzowski and English teacher Gray Cooper. It kicks off with a writing assessment and culminates in a networking session as its final exam. Over the course of an hour, in the high school’s Westshore Culinary Arts Ranger Cafe, students interact with people from the

Lakewood community to practice the communication skills they’ve learned. “Small business owners, police officers, firefighters, city council and board members, the mayor, all have representation there,” says Guzowski, who worked in business before becoming a teacher. “Students put into practice the interpersonal skills we’ve learned and rehearsed in class,” Cooper explains. “How to shake hands, maintain eye contact, how to listen, how to open and close a conversation.”

“It’s also a beautiful example of the vibrancy of the Lakewood Community — a small community with lots of microbusinesses and business owners eager to share their time and expertise with our students.” – Stephen Kerney Students also learn how to make an apology, how to navigate difficult conversations and how to enforce boundaries. The community members and students who participate are encouraged to mingle and have multiple conversations during the hour. “[Senior year] is the time in life where these students are becoming adults,” notes Guzowski. “Our course is about articulating who you are and how to communicate effectively with people — especially people you don’t know.” “Our students rise to the occasion,” Cooper adds. “Even students with severe anxiety leave with evidence that they can successfully navigate a challenging interaction.”

TASTE of Lakewood

The annual Taste of Lakewood, presented by the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and Cleveland Magazine, was hosted at a new venue this year. The event took place at the brand-new indoor/outdoor venue, Studio West 117. The event featured indoor restaurant booths, outdoor picnic areas, live music, an outdoor merchant area and a kids’ courtyard with plenty to do for the whole family. The VIP experience took place on the spectacular rooftop deck. As usual, the event featured Lakewood’s unique blend of restaurants and merchants. A portion of the event proceeds benefit the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund.
