Mansfield & Richland County are for the strong and inspired.
We are a family of communities that are working together to boldly set the standard for reinvention and imagination. Our rolling hills reflect the grit and glory of our ups and downs, where the soul of our collective communities has been curated, crafted and cultivated by artists, philosophers, builders, inventors, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Hollywood icons.
We are surrounded by fertile farms settled by proud pioneers, including American legend, Johnny Appleseed, who believed in the beauty and honesty found in working the land for the benefit of all.
They were followed by rugged industrialists, who built the nation’s trust by giving life to the pump industry, new forms of transportation, power generation, robotics and innovations that changed our world.
The roads, highways, bike trails and rivers that connect our cities and villages give way to a culture of dynamic residents with humbly hidden talents and trades that transform tenacity into triumph. Here you will find space for people who want an abundant life.
We act upon the need for innovation, invention and reinterpretation. We are outspoken and achievementdriven, dedicated and hardworking, with a strong belief in the value of inner expression, quiet contemplation and the soul-inspiring replenishment of the great outdoors.
Today, we are all creators, sharing a collective vision, deeply rooted in the success of our past.
Generation after generation, forging imagination and prosperity.
We are building momentum, led by the dreamers of now.
We are a story in the making and yours to transform.
Come, make it in Mansfield. Welcome home.

DIFFERENCE ROOM TO MAKE A
HOME IS NOT WHERE YOU WERE BORN, but where you choose to live. This is certainly the case for general practitioner Nancy Mathieu, MD. While Dr. Mathieu set up her medical practice through Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital only four years ago, she considers Mansfield home. “I’ve had a lot of firsts here,” she explains. “I bought my first home. Started my career. My son, Hunter, was six when we first moved here, so he’s grown up here.”
“Mansfield is balance.”
Dr. Mathieu was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and completed her medical training in the Sunshine State, where five of her seven siblings still live. She did her residency in Columbus, Ohio, but wanted to launch her career in a more rural area. Mansfield was the perfect location because it gave her the opportunity to make a difference, but still offered amenities she wouldn’t find in more remote locations. She says life is about balance and, to her, “Mansfield is balance.”
Besides raising Hunter, Dr. Mathieu’s most rewarding activity is certainly her career. She is the only member of her family to graduate from college and is proud to set a new precedent for herself and her son, who wants to follow in his mother’s footsteps and become a physician. She’s grateful Mansfield lets her practice medicine the way she always dreamed.
“I feel blessed,” she says. “Here in Mansfield, there’s room for me to take care of patients across the spectrum. I treat three-montholds to 93-year-olds, and can truly make a big difference.” Dr. Mathieu’s making a difference outside of office hours too, serving
as team physician for the high school and hosting healthcare events at churches and community centers.
“I get to stick to the fundamentals of primary care, treating kids, parents, grandparents, an entire generation of a family.”
While her med school classmates who practice in big cities complain about no-shows and not having a relationship with patients, Dr. Mathieu is proud to play an active role in people’s lives. “I get to stick to the fundamentals of primary care, treating kids, parents, grandparents, an entire generation of a family. Someone passes and you mourn. Someone achieves a milestone and you celebrate. That’s why I became a doctor.”
“The sense of community, the opportunities, the close-knit, family feeling and the hard workers who still value the core of America. That’s what makes Mansfield special to me.”
The only thing that could make Mansfield feel more like home? If her family joined her, which she’s working on. Her brother has already taken her up on the offer, having moved his family here three years ago. And he loves Mansfield for the same reasons Dr. Mathieu does: “The sense of community, the opportunities, the close-knit, family feeling and the hard workers who still value the core of America. That’s what makes Mansfield special to me,” she says.

30 YEARS OF SHAWSHANK
Celebrate the classic film and see it come to life on The Shawshank Trail.
BY TONYA PRATERTHIS YEAR MARKS THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ICONIC MOVIE THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. WHEN THE FILM CREWS ROLLED UP AT THE HISTORIC OHIO STATE REFORMATORY OVER THREE DECADES AGO, LITTLE DID ANYONE KNOW THE MOVIE THEY WERE FILMING WOULD PUT MANSFIELD ON THE MAP AS AN INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION.
Shawshank may not have soared at the box office, but in the past 30 years, it has ascended to legendary status as the No. 1 movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Just as Andy offered hope to Red in Shawshank, the film brought a sense of redemption to Mansfield. More than just saving a historic prison from demolition, it created a path of discovery for visitors through The Shawshank Trail.
The self-guided driving tour, detailed on the brochure and Shawshank Trail website, includes 15 well-marked stops. While you can explore in any order, many visitors begin at the Historic Ohio State Reformatory, then journey through key filming locations in Richland, Ashland and Wyandot counties. Visitors can explore the cabin from the movie’s opening scene, sit on Brooks’ bench where he fed the birds and take a photo with the mural at the grocery store where Red and Brooks worked. The easiest way to enjoy the trail is on a Shawshank Bus Tour, which starts and ends at the Reformatory. You’ll learn behind-the-scenes facts from an expert tour guide as you ride in style.
Although most stops on the movie trail are free, the paid tour of the prison is well-worth admission and a highlight for many on this pilgrimage. Opt for a guided tour or wander the hushed halls of Shawshank Prison at your leisure to see where Brooks slept, find the tunnel where Andy escaped to freedom and view the Shawshank Museum’s behind-the-scenes exhibits and photo ops. The prison also offers fans and collectors a chance to buy Shawshankthemed souvenirs, including 30th anniversary memorabilia.
TALES FROM THE TRAIL
Trail blazers Emily Pugh and Abraham Klein are two super fans who have a unique connection to The Shawshank Redemption and to The Shawshank Trail.
Emily Pugh
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE STOP FOR YOU ON THE SHAWSHANK TRAIL?
The road to Buxton. It was the first stop I made with my mom. I will never forget the second we turned on the road — it was like we had entered the movie. The scenery was breathtaking and unchanged after all those years, and I knew from that stop forward the trail would be a great experience.
WERE THERE MOMENTS ON THE TRAIL THAT MADE YOU FEEL CONNECTED TO THE MOVIE?
I have to say the prison. Everything there is so well preserved and I was able to recreate my movie scene pictures to a T! To walk in the same place as Andy, Red, Tommy, Brooks, etc. was a magical experience.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THE TRAIL FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE?
Even if one has not seen the movie, the trail is interesting. There’s scenery for nature lovers, the prison for history buffs and paranormal enthusiasts, plus restaurants and shops and everything in between.
Abraham Klein
WHEN DID YOU LAST EXPERIENCE THE SHAWSHANK TRAIL?
I’ve stopped in Mansfield four times while traveling to Chicago with my aunt, but the most recent time was in 2019 for the 25th anniversary. I still keep in touch with people I met during the meet & greet.
WAS THERE A PARTICULAR MOVIE SCENE THAT CAME TO LIFE FOR YOU ON THE TRAIL?
I had planned to propose to my fiancé on our first trip in 2015 and was disappointed to learn the oak tree had fallen down and was on private property. I decided to propose as close to that spot as possible, but when we started walking the road to Buxton, I knew that was the spot. It was peaceful and reminded me of home.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE “CAN’T MISS” SPOT ON THE TRAIL?
Of course, the road to Buxton, but also Pugh Cabin and the prison — it looks like a castle when you see it. I went on a private tour and got to lean up against the wall where Andy and Red had their final conversation behind bars.

FOR HILLS TRADING MOUNTAINS
SANDY MESSNER VISITED MANSFIELD for the first time in 1994. It was for a friend’s wedding, but it was Sandy who fell in love — with Mansfield. “I was living in Colorado and looking for a change,” says Sandy. Forty years, two sons and one grandson later, not even Sandy can believe just how much her life has changed.
It’s a beautiful, yet familiar story that many of our residents can relate to. Sandy would know, as she meets a lot of people as director of marketing and communications at the Richland Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development.
“It’s hard to pick one thing that’s special about Richland County,” says Sandy. “It’s really that the whole area is connected. There was fierce competition between communities in Colorado. Here, the communities just get together and everybody knows each other.”
“We are so glad we are here. It’s scenic and beautiful.”
Her parents, Jim and Pat Derr, agree. “Every community here works together,” says Pat. “Colorado is life in a much faster lane,” Jim adds. “There’s just a welcoming feeling when you’re here.” They liked Mansfield so much, in fact, that they decided to retire here in 2023 after 30 years of visiting.
Uprooting your life and moving 1,300-plus miles is never easy. It had added weight for the Derrs, whose Colorado roots go back four generations to the 1800s. “I thought we’d stay in Colorado forever,” says Pat. “But we are so glad we are here. It’s scenic and beautiful.”
While Sandy and her parents come from Colorado, her husband, Mike, has proudly called the area home his entire life. Seeing Sandy and her family fall in love with his hometown has been extremely gratifying for him. Mike’s living his dream as owner and instructor at Madison Fitness Center (“Mad-Fit” to locals) and Budokai Martial Arts. “If you have a dream, you don’t even realize how much help is out there,” says Mike. “The low cost of living here makes it easier to save. Everyone loves to support small businesses here.”
Mansfield is great for starting a career — and a life. “It was a great place to raise our family,” says Sandy. “We could have moved back to Colorado, but it would have been a struggle. Everything here is just drastically easier. You’ve got so many awesome places that are a short drive, yet you still have a small town to go home to without all the craziness.”
And now, her Colorado family is planting new roots in Mansfield, as Sandy’s grandson, Alexander, was born this year. “Life sometimes goes down roads we don’t expect,” says Sandy. “I’m excited to be a part of the growth and see where we go.”

Opened in 1896, the world-famous Historic Ohio State Reformatory is a Romanesque architectural wonder that turns scary after dark and comes to life during Halloween. Step back and relive milestones of the 19th and 20th centuries at the North Central Ohio Industrial Museum. This museum is a testament to ingenuity, housing artifacts from closed factories and manufacturing genius, like trolley parts, tires, go karts, appliances, ice cream bars and so much more.
All the way from bucket brigade days to internal combustion power equipment, the Mansfield Fire Museum highlights firefighting’s past. Historic fire trucks, artifacts and an antique fire alarm are paired with a turn-of-the-century fire station and walk-through Main Street. Aviation legend and Mansfield native Frank P. THE BLACK CYCLONE TRAIL
Travel through history and hit all the stops on the brand-new Black Cyclone Trail. This trail tells the extraordinary life story of Ohio’s own Charles W. Learn more at blackcyclone.org.

BY NICHOLAS DEKKERTHROUGH THE YEARS
Most things only get better with age, which means these long-running eateries serve up local-favorite meals in Mansfield!
Look for the neon sign to guide you to Mansfield’s oldest restaurant, the Coney Island Diner. Grab a swiveling seat at the counter to feast on fluffy omelets, their famous pea salad and of course — coney dogs. Cozy up at Uncle John’s Tavern, with its beautiful wooden floor, long bar and deep booths. You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, but try a signature cheese steak burger or juicy Reuben burger. You won’t leave hungry from Mansfield Family
Restaurants, a pair of eateries that have been feeding families since 1970. Bring the whole crew to feast on giant omelets and golden pancakes, tender broasted chicken and rich Amish pies.
The “World Famous” Coney Island Inn is a downtown Mansfield staple. Don’t let its simple exterior fool you. Inside the unassuming eatery is a beloved haven for coney dogs, bologna sandwiches, cheeseburgers and breakfast served all day. Although the Buckeye Bakery has changed hands since it first opened in the late 1800s, the amazing quality remains the same. The family-run bakery produces delectable donuts — especially the cream sticks — danish, strudel, cookies, cakes and much more.
UNBELIEVABLE DIGS
Whether it’s historic haunts or standout locations, these Richland County mainstays deserve a spot on your mustvisit list.
The stunning Prohibition at the Caverns is located in old brewery lagering tunnels underneath Hudson & Essex, built between 1850–1865. Vaulted brick ceilings are the backdrop to expertly prepared eight-course dinners served 30 feet underground, with optional wine pairings. You’ll find 1285 Winery on a sprawling blueberry farm. Part of The Blueberry Patch, the winery offers relaxing but upscale ambiance in a lush setting. Sip wines (including their
house-crafted blueberry wine) while savoring wood-fired pizzas or brunch burritos on the patio surrounded by rolling green hills carpeted in blueberry bushes.
You don’t have to book an overnight to visit the restaurant at the Wishmaker House Bed & Breakfast, a renovated and grand historic home in downtown Bellville. Grab patio seats out back in the lush garden to enjoy house wines, flatbreads and imaginative house-made cheesecakes. DLX, or Dan Lew Exchange, takes you on a world tour without leaving Mansfield. Admire the historic downtown building with original tin ceilings while you sip cocktails and dive into sushi, steaks
and stir fry. Train enthusiasts will love the Buckeye Express Diner — just look for the vintage train car parked on the hill outside Bellville. Order your burgers and subs at the window, then climb on in to find your table inside the train cars.
FIELD TO TABLE
With the idyllic bounty of Richland County, it’s no surprise to see local meats and produce appearing on restaurant menus.
It’s always a delightful time at Chuy’s Tacos & Margaritas in Mifflin, where you’ll find produce from Wiers Farm in Willard. Things sometimes get spicy at Two Cousins Pizza in Mansfield; some of the kick comes from fresh jalapeño peppers sourced locally from the North End Community Improvement Collaborative urban farms.
Hudson & Essex is one of Mansfield’s most accomplished restaurants. Making its home in the former Hudson & Essex automotive showroom, the eatery features exquisite dinner and brunch menus, from charcuterie boards to crabcakes, filet mignon to shrimp gumbo, eggs Benedict to breakfast risotto. Throughout the menus, you’ll spot local ingredients, like produce from the Richland Gro-Op, microgreens from Everleaf Aquaponics and beef from Der Schlachten Haus Meats. So while you dine, you know you’re getting a true taste of the region!
LIQUID LUCK
Fuel up for a weekend exploring Richland County or wind down after a busy day in downtown Mansfield at these local watering holes.
Relax It’s Just Coffee in downtown Mansfield’s Historic Carrousel District offers plenty of space to do as the name says — relax with coffee. Sip espresso or a latte while you take in the brick walls, tall ceilings and wooden floors, then pick up a bag or two of fresh-roasted coffee before you go. Two doors down, 3rd Cup Tea is another calm sanctuary in the center of Mansfield. The shop features more than 50 teas from around the world. You can enjoy a hot or iced cup in their shop with wooden floors, bright walls and a soaring tin ceiling, or take one to go as you explore downtown. Although the Warehouse Tavern is true to its name with its light industrial vibe, you’ll find nothing but a warm welcome there. The community-favorite bar and gathering place features a robust beer and bourbon selection, offers pool tables and live music and hosts bike night for motorcyclists every Wednesday in the summer.
DOGGONE DELICIOUS
Sometimes it’s fun to take your furry friends on a dining excursion! If you’re traveling with your canine best friend, seek out these dog-friendly spots around Richland County.
The Black Dog Tavern is named for T-Bone, the bygone companion of the Wright family, owners of the tavern. You’ll see his photos on the walls. Today you’re welcomed by Einstein, a rescue who joined the family in 2023. Say hi to him while you relax on the tavern’s giant,
two-level patio overlooking Deer Ridge Golf Course. The lower patio at Oak Park Tavern is dog-friendly, too. Park your pup on the patio while you taste their perfectly grilled steaks or famous fried perch. The tavern has been one of Mansfield’s favorite supper clubs since 1940.
The elegant Hudson & Essex offers alfresco dining spaces that look out into downtown Mansfield. Pups are welcome on the two-level outdoor patios, so you can sip a glass of wine while you enjoy dinner with the entire family. Also found downtown, The Phoenix Brewing Company is housed in a former mortuary, and they’ve transformed the alley outside into a shaded patio. Bring your best friend while you relax with a pint of Redemption West Coast IPA or Krampus Kandy white stout. In addition to Phoenix Brewing, many of the breweries and wineries on the Wine & Ale Trail welcome dogs on their patios, including the new Black Fork Brewing in Shelby.

SERVICE A LIFE OF
UNTIL THE DAY he took his coin collector son to a convention in town, Dr. Jason Bilyj (pronounced like “village” with a “B”) had never been to Mansfield. Even so, the Cleveland native knew right away what a rare find Mansfield was.
Fast forward a few years to Dr. Bilyj happily accepting a job, despite a 20% pay cut, with Third Street Family Health Services — a non-profit that provides essential medical and dental care to people who otherwise couldn’t afford it. Never in his nearly two-decade career had he lived and worked in the same place, but Richland County felt different. It felt like home. And soon, it was home.
“We’ve had nothing but good experiences,” says Dr. Bilyj. “Our family was accepted quickly. Compared to big cities, everyone is more personable. More kind.” That kindness extends to Third Street, where he serves as Director of Pharmacy. The clinic began with healthcare professionals volunteering their time and talents to serve the underprivileged. Today, Third Street employs a fulltime staff, including physicians, dentists and a pharmacist.
“We opened up our pharmacy because patients were falling through the cracks,” he explains. “I make sure whatever Dr. Carolyn Chambers prescribes gets into patients’ hands. Actually handing them their medicine is a game-changer, and a life saver.” As a graduate of the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, Dr. Bilyj’s goal has been to practice the science of helping people, so Third Street has been a dream job. “We are here to take care
of people. That is how medicine should be practiced. It has really awakened a passion in me.”
“There is a culture here. You have these wonderful communities. It feels more connected. Everything is accessible. There’s space for everyone.”
The only thing Dr. Bilyj is more passionate about than his work is his family. As the father of four children (two of them under five), finding a community full of opportunities and activities was important to him and his wife Elizabeth. They found all of that, and so much more, in Richland County. “There is a culture here. You have these wonderful communities. It feels more connected. Everything is accessible. There’s space for everyone.”
While sporting events and outdoor activities take up most of the Bilyj family’s free time, Dr. Bilyj is also looking forward to what Richland County means for his children’s futures. “Great schools. Great parks. And for older kids, the college choices are great,” he says. “You really can give your kids a boost to their future with everything so close.”
Dr. Bilyj left his high-paying, unfulfilling pharmacy job for a new and exciting future for his family in Richland County, and he hasn’t regretted it once. “Keep your eye on Mansfield because it is going to surprise you,” he says. “We are here to stay.”

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
Whether passing through or staying for a lifetime, feathered friends have a home in Richland County at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary.
BY JAMIE RHEINOrphaned and injured native birds are like family members at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary, a 90-acre nature preserve of woods and marshes along the Clear Fork River. Each has a mishap story. Walk along the bricked walkway in front of their enclosure homes to meet them.
There is Blaze, the peregrine falcon who hatched and fell from a nest on Rhodes Tower in downtown Columbus. The fall hurt his shoulder. Tundra, a rough-legged hawk, identifiable by its dark belly and black and white wings, was hit by a car while migrating to Ohio for the winter. Some, like Alice the bald eagle, contracted illnesses like the West Nile virus. “He is blind in the left eye, and the right is not good,” says Amanda Vanderford, the licensed veterinary technician and sanctuary’s bird curator.
Although the hope is to release birds to the wild to live normal lives once they are treated, others would not survive. Many of these stay at the sanctuary for life. “We spend a lot of time getting birds to be happy,” says Vanderford.
What other birds call the sanctuary home? There’s Seymour, a great horned owl, and Maverick and Ruby, red-tailed hawks, among the residents that include crows and songbirds. If you head into the aviary with a small cup of meal worm purchased in the visitors’ center, social birds like cardinals, blue jays and finches are enticed to come to you.
Trainable birds like Elliot, a beautiful black vulture who identifies as human after being mistaken as an orphan, are Avian Ambassadors. Elliot is trained to paint. You can purchase his creations in the gift shop. Others like D.J., a red-shouldered hawk, and barn owls Silo and Soren are
Bird Sanctuary
used to teach bird facts in Keeper Talks and events including photo sessions. Bird encounters pair with educational programs in the open-air, fully accessible Treehouse Classroom connected to a 200-foot boardwalk. The Avian Encounters area is a new village of enclosures for birds who are Educational Ambassadors. Exciting programs, including free flight, will be held in the center upon completion. Although the sanctuary’s permanent bird residents and hiking trails are reason enough to visit, bird releases are the celebration moments. “Some are soft release — we open enclosures and let them go on their own terms. From a
cardinal to an eagle, they all have their own release story,” says Vanderford. The path to release for some is a miracle. When Forest, a baby red-shouldered hawk, was found with puncture wounds on a forest floor, his chance of survival was iffy. “I had to put him on antibiotics, pain medication and supplemental oxygen” says Vanderford. After months of touch-and-go treatment and testing in a flight cage, Forest was released in a field edged by woods. Abby Yates was the staff member who opened the box to let Forest go. “It’s the most rewarding thing,” she says. “It’s nice to see the success of hard work and see [birds] go back to the wild where they belong.”
