We are a family of communities that are working together to boldly set the standard for reinvention and imagination. Our rolling hills reflect the grit and glory of our ups and downs, where the soul of our collective communities has been curated, crafted and cultivated by artists, philosophers, builders, inventors, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Hollywood icons.
We are surrounded by fertile farms settled by proud pioneers, including American legend, Johnny Appleseed, who believed in the beauty and honesty found in working the land for the benefit of all.
They were followed by rugged industrialists, who built the nation’s trust by giving life to the pump industry, new forms of transportation, power generation, robotics and innovations that changed our world.
The roads, highways, bike trails and rivers that connect our cities and villages give way to a culture of dynamic residents with humbly hidden talents and trades that transform tenacity into triumph. Here you will find space for people who want an abundant life.
We act upon the need for innovation, invention and reinterpretation. We are outspoken and achievement-driven, dedicated and hardworking, with a strong belief in the value of inner expression, quiet contemplation and the soul-inspiring replenishment of the great outdoors.
Today, we are all creators, sharing a collective vision, deeply rooted in the success of our past.
Generation after generation, forging imagination and prosperity.
We are building momentum, led by the dreamers of now.
We are a story in the making and yours to transform.
Come, make it in Mansfield. Welcome home.

BEATEN PATH LIFE OFF THE
NOT ALL RESIDENTS were born in Mansfield, but everyone who moves here quickly finds themselves right at home — just ask Louie Andres. Retired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Louie grew up in southwest Ohio and moved to Mansfield in 1992 to manage Malabar Farm State Park. With a wife and three children under five, Louie had his work cut out for him. He soon found a community perfect for raising his family and growing his career. “I brought my family here, stayed here, built a house here,” says Louie. “We made our lives here.”
“I brought my family here, stayed here, built a house here. We made our lives here.”
To know Louie is to know Malabar Farm State Park, where he spent the majority of his career, and where his heart still resides. Malabar Farm was the dream of Mansfield native son, Louis Bromfield — a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and a founding father of the modern environmental movement. He built his home here, which is why Louie spearheaded the Malabar Farm Foundation in 1993 to promote Bromfield’s principles and ideals.
Malabar Farm is Louis Bromfield’s legacy — and Louie Andres’ too. “I was brought here because of my community building skills,” says Louie. “My background was as a park ranger and environmental educator, and I moved my way through the system as manager.” Key to Louie’s position was gaining the confidence and trust of the community. He did that by joining
forces with Destination Mansfield-Richland County. “Their job is to attract outsiders to Mansfield and make them feel at home,” explains Louie. “What everyone loves is the mix of small-town charm with access to the big cities.”
Louie recommends anyone new in town to get involved. “That’s the first thing I told my kids growing up, and I still tell people to this day — you need to get involved in the community. Volunteer someplace. Find what you like. There are a lot of opportunities. This is a great place to raise a family because it’s also a great place to learn about work ethic.” And Louie practices what he preaches. Not content to sit idle, he continues working during retirement for Pleasant Hill Lake Park, and is the longest-serving board member of Destination Mansfield-Richland County.
But it’s not all work and no play for Louie, as he knows all the things to do in Mansfield. “People don’t know what is in their own backyard,” he says. “Bromfield called this the edge of paradise. When you come out here, it’s like nowhere else in Ohio. If you get off the beaten path, you’ll be surprised by what you see.”

FIRE UP YOUR IMAGINATION
BY TONYA PRATERGET IMMERSED in a world of play that will entertain you and your child for hours at the newly opened and expanded Buckeye Imagination Museum. This bright and colorful 32,000-sq.-ft. facility offers families a safe indoor environment, where children ages 2–10 can learn about the world through more than 40 hands-on exhibits, representing community services, local businesses and other attractions.
Imagine dressing up like a firefighter and driving the truck to the fire scene, working as a stylist in the Studio 19 Salon, or planting flowers at Kingwood Center Gardens. Kids can also enjoy the indoor playground with steps to climb and three slides to descend, racing boats at the water play table, or the oversized foam building blocks that may be a rocket one minute and a castle the next.
The second floor, currently underway, will offer more challenging activities for older kids and adults. You’ll find a boulder climbing wall that spins, giant games
of skill and strategy like Jenga, Connect 4 and chess, a mini arcade and lava room, six-person air hockey table or even the timed laser racing tunnel that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
When it’s time for a break, take a seat at the snack bar to fuel up or grab a coffee. But don’t sit still too long — at this museum, parents and caregivers are encouraged to play with their children. So go ahead, perform in the mini-theatre, play with the animals in the barn, dress for the construction site, play games, climb the boulder wall, make a pizza, dig for Dinos and build memories one block at a time.
The Buckeye Imagination Museum (formerly the Little Buckeye Children’s Museum) features many upgrades, including free on-site parking, more exhibit space for older children and complete ADA accessibility. And they’re just getting started! Mark your calendar for upcoming upgrades like games and exhibit space outside the museum.

DO IT ALL
Downtown Downtown
Stroll the streets of downtown Mansfield to experience it all in the beating heart of Richland County. Be inspired by expressive works of art, savor expertly crafted dishes and drinks, and get to know the vibrant personality of the city. You’ll find all of that, and so much more, in downtown Mansfield — no matter where your adventure takes you.
BY ALEXIA KEMERLINGTHE HISTORIC CARROUSEL DISTRICT
Mansfield’s axis spins on history, art and music — literally! All three components come together in the Richland Carrousel Park. When it opened in 1991, the structure was the first new hand-carved, wooden carrousel built in the U.S. since the 1930s, featuring 52 unique animals designed, carved and painted in Mansfield. Take a spin on the legendary Hippocampus (part horse, part fish) or in the wheelchair-accessible horse-drawn chariots. Or just enjoy the lively music that fills the district as you explore the streets of downtown.
Just as popular with kids and adults is the colorful and delicious teas at 3rd Cup Tea. One door down, you’ll find even more caffeine and pastries at Relax, It’s Just Coffee
Hungry? Wings, burgers and other pub eats are on the menu at City Grille. Just around the corner, Hudson & Essex is the place to head if you’re looking for a more elevated evening out. Sip Cypress Hill wine and order from the small plates menu in the rustic, warmly lit winery downstairs. Make a reservation and head underground for the Prohibition in the Caverns experience, a curated eight-course meal served in the stonelined caverns where distillers kept tradition alive. The dining room and patio, which overlook the city, don’t disappoint either, and the menu is packed with delicious chef specials and local ingredients regardless of where you dine.
Cap the night off across the street at the Warehouse Tavern with a drink and a friendly game of pool. On nice nights, you’ll enjoy the warm breeze drifting in from the open garage door windows. Every Wednesday in the summer, you’ll find motorcycles lining the street during the tavern’s Bike Night.
THE BRICKYARD
As you amble down Fourth Street, keep an eye out for a pop of color. The Brickyard Alley features four vibrant murals painted by a local artist. Twinkling string lights crisscross overhead, making for the perfect photo op with these iconic backdrops. Once you’ve got your shot, follow the path into The Brickyard itself, the epicenter of arts and culture in downtown. The aptly named brick courtyard is surrounded by towering historic buildings, making it an intimate (yet spacious) hangout to gather with friends and enjoy live entertainment in the heart of the city. Stop by at the end of each month June through September for the Final Friday concert series featuring live music and food trucks.
To the right of the stage, you’ll find patio seating and great beer at The Phoenix Brewing Company, a local brewery housed in a … wait for it … former mortuary. In typical Mansfield fashion, there’s more here than meets the eye. If you’re looking for something more intimate and reserved, head upstairs to The Spirit Room for a tasting of bourbon, whiskey and scotch. For a fun group activity, stop in Axe Social Lounge. Like a more extreme version of darts, axe throwing is the perfect blend of skill, luck and fun.
THE SQUARE
The Square is the front row seat to downtown and a hub for community events. Restaurants, storefronts and an art gallery line Mansfield’s Central Park, earning this greenspace its nickname at the city’s center. Take a walk down the tree-studded street and admire the intricate architecture of Central Park Gazebo, built at the turn of the 21st century. Every other Friday in the summer, try tasty bites from a local food truck and listen to live music in the intimate, quaint courtyard tucked away in Mechanic’s Bank. Their Live@Lunch series is the perfect start to a weekend getaway. In the winter, an abundance of holiday lights and giant wreaths give the historic area a Hallmark-movie atmosphere, while local entrepreneurs host their very own ball drop from atop the Park National Bank Building every New Year’s Eve
Ingenuity meets fresh, vibrant flavors at Mansfield’s beloved restaurants. Ask any local where to find the best burger and they’ll send you to Uncle John’s Place, with its art-lined walls, dark wood paneled bar, comfortable booths and reliably delicious food, this spot feels like home to natives and visitors alike. On the menu at Dan Lew Exchange, you’ll find sushi, noodles, rice dishes
and cocktails, while Reindeer Grill serves up everything from pasta to pizza to seafood. If the weather’s nice, grab an order of gyros and fries from Athena Greek Restaurant and picnic under Central Park’s gazebo or near the whimsical, music-making playground stations. Then, stroll the rest of the park to see the Martin Luther King Jr. monument and displays of local art.

BREWING UP COMMUNITY
BEER IS A FAMILY AFFAIR for the husband-and-wife duo Duncan and Carmone Macfarlane.
In April 2014, the Macfarlanes combined their 30-plus years of brewing experience with co-founders Scott Cardwell and Steve Zigmund to bring the craft beer revival to Mansfield through The Phoenix Brewing Company. Duncan is the head brewer; Carmone, “Red,” is the chief creative officer and head of marketing.
“Everyone has a collaborative spirit and wants to see each other succeed.”
The Phoenix opened almost 10 years ago, but its origins date to a century before that. It isn’t housed in a refurbished factory or trendy outdoor space, but a fully restored mortuary and funeral home located near Mansfield’s pre-prohibition brewery district. Despite being in a former mortuary, The Phoenix is anything but “dead.” In fact, it’s one of the centerpieces of booming downtown Mansfield, and a favorite hotspot for its quality craft beers and live local music.
While we can’t imagine Mansfield without the Macfarlanes now, both are transplants — sort of. Carmone hails from Lima, and Duncan moved here as an infant, but bounced around as an adult, including stops in Florida, Findlay and Columbus. “There was so much to do here [in Mansfield] already,” remembers Carmone, “and the location between Cleveland and Columbus was a selling point.” At the time, Duncan was an environmental scientist, while Red was an art education teacher. Still, the Macfarlanes could sense something was … brewing.
“We started planning The Phoenix in 2013,” says Duncan. “And we haven’t looked back since.” While running a brewery is hard work — turns out making beer is harder than drinking it — the couple credits the Mansfield community for their success. “Everyone has a collaborative spirit and wants to see each other succeed,” says Duncan.
“There’s a general positive attitude amongst everyone,” agrees Carmone. “Things happen gradually, but we’re still seeing big changes every day.” The Macfarlanes are part of those big changes as business owners — and as residents. When not working, you can find them frequenting one of the many places around the community.
The couple is helping out in other ways, too. Since the pandemic, The Phoenix worked out a no-tipping policy. Any money left behind for tips is given to local charities. Staff were given across-the-board raises, and allowed to cross-train to enhance their skill sets. It’s just one of the many ways the brewery is giving back to the community that has given them so much. “Our community is invested in itself. We’re inclusive,” says Duncan. “We’re an environment that’s fun for everyone, with collaborations that include all. We’re just so proud to be part of that.”

WORTH THE
TRIP
Despite its small footprint, the city is big on fun with experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Since Hollywood’s 1950s heyday, Mansfield has been a favorite spot for movie stars and location scouts. Now visitors can hang out where celebrities came to chill and tour real-life movie sets.
One such spot is Malabar Farm State Park, once home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author and screenwriter Louis Bromfield, today a working farm and an Ohio state park. Visitors can tour the farmhouse and grounds where Bromfield’s celestial pals like Jimmy Cagney, Lauren Bacall and Humphry Bogart came to escape Hollywood. Hear how Bogie and Bacall slipped away to Mansfield, then stand in the very spot where the duo tied the knot.
The Shawshank Trail (shawshanktrail.com) takes travelers to 15 sites where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed, including Historic Ohio State Reformatory. The building’s stunning Gothic architecture starred as Shawshank Prison, also playing roles in Air Force One, music videos and more. Shawshank corrections and industrial museums share real estate with “Old Sparky,” Ohio’s original electric chair, actual movie sets and even a few ghosts. Haunted tours and ghost hunts help paranormal fans indulge their penchant for the metaphysical. July’s massive Inkcarceration Festival brings tattoo artists and big-name rockers to the Reformatory.
Downtown Mansfield’s Historic Carrousel District lets visitors ride the first new, hand-carved carrousel built in the U.S. since the 1930s at Richland Carrousel Park. A short walk away at the Mansfield Memorial Museum, you can discover fascinating Mansfield history and meet Elektro, America’s first robot.
There’s nothing like a visit to Kingwood Center Gardens, where you can snoop inside a dazzling industrialist’s mansion with three levels, servants’ quarters and 12 fireplaces, then search for peacocks as you wander 47 acres of breathtaking gardens and woods. Workshops, events, plant sales and greenhouse displays invite return visits every season. Beautiful grounds also mark one of the nation’s top motorsports courses. Much-lauded Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course hosts INDYCAR, NASCAR and vintage motorcycle and Grand Prix events with up-close-and-personal fan experiences.
Dining makes a Mansfield tour even more worth the trip. Unlike anything else in the Midwest, splurge on the eightcourse dinner with pairings at Prohibition at the Caverns, hidden in secret stone-lined caverns beneath the city. Upstairs, Hudson & Essex serves a wildly creative menu and houseproduced wines in a beautifully restored former car dealership where elegant 1920s architectural details have been carefully preserved.
For the best-ever burgers, hand-cut fries and onion rings, it’s worth a drive up the hill to Buckeye Express Diner.
Eat inside antique railroad cars and pull the rope on the world’s largest bobblehead. Recently restored after lying headless in a field for more than 50 years, the mammoth 35-foot-tall 1950s fiberglass Chef Jacques statue welcomes everyone. Nearby, bustling 5 acre you-pick The Blueberry Patch is home to a full-service restaurant, gift shop and 1285 Winery. Take home some delicious blueberry donuts and blueberries grown on site — which are available frozen, even when they’re out of season.
The joy of travel lives in the surprise of discovery. In Mansfield, surprises hide around every corner, making it every bit worth the trip.

The self-guided, immersive journey takes you to sites from your favorite scenes, including the Historic Ohio State Reformatory that served as Shawshank State Prison where you can step into creepy cells and peer through Andy’s escape tunnel. Get your picture taken and feed the birds on Brooks’ park bench, walk the same steps as Red on the rolling backroads to Buxton and listen to the freeing sounds of Mozart at Shawshank’s own woodshop. You’ll also get a close-up look at iconic movie props and sets, costumes, on-screen vehicles and more of the real-deal, authentic pieces from the film on this one-of-a-kind pilgrimage.

PARK IT
Mansfield’s North Lake Park is a picturesque, warm-weather spot with a fishing pond and basketball court. Bring the kids to cool off at the YMCA’s Splash Pad Park, with its interactive water features and dumping bucket. Shelby’s newly built Black Fork Commons also buzzes in the summer, when the amphitheater hosts live music and festivals.
Along with Clearfork Reservoir’s beckoning water, anglers and boaters find paradise at Charles Mill Lake Park and Pleasant Hill Lake Park in Perrysville. Catfish and bluegill are among the bounty. If you don’t have a boat, rent a kayak at Charles Mill Marina or a pontoon at Pleasant Hill Marina. Make it an overnight getaway at either park with tent and RV camping and luxury log cabins.
Charles Palm Park in Bellville has two fishing ponds, but pups especially will love Finnigan’s Run, the area’s newest dog park which is located along the B&O Trail. Marshall Park in Ontario is another dog park winner with a splash park for kids, a band shell for concerts, lighted baseball/softball diamonds and an 18-hole disc golf course — part of the nationwide
disc-golf network along with courses at Clearfork Reservoir Park and Shelby’s Seltzer Park

CARRYING ON THE TRADITION
NIKIA FLETCHER MET THE LOVE OF HER LIFE
in Mansfield, but didn’t date him for 10 years, and then didn’t marry him for another 10.
It all makes sense when you realize they met as children.
“We’ve actually known each other since birth,” says Nikia. She and her now-husband, Antonio, started dating in 9th grade, but like most high school relationships, went their separate ways after graduation. While he stayed in Mansfield, Nikia left for college at the University of Akron and didn’t return for a decade. “I came back to marry my high school sweetheart,” says Nikia. “I always knew I would raise my kids in Mansfield.” The reason? The people.
“Everybody knows everybody,” says Nikia. “People call my husband ‘Fletch.’ Nobody is going to let anything happen to Fletch’s boys. It’s so reassuring being able to raise our kids the same way our families raised us.”
Nikia doesn’t just love being friends with her family. In Mansfield, your friends feel like family. “It’s small enough that people really know each other,” says Nikia. “I love that because I have three boys and I want people to watch out for my kids.”
For Nikia, those memories of growing up in Mansfield are still fresh in her mind and heart. “The thing I remember most is working with my grandma. She had fruit trees and a large garden that we’d tend all summer long,” recalls Nikia. “It’s so important to us that we keep family traditions going. I live a stone’s throw from my mom and aunt. We have a big extended family and just love each other.”
Having spent most of her life in Mansfield, Nikia has seen a lot of changes. She believes right now is one of the most exciting times. “The word I use is ‘bustling,’ she says. “There are so many people who see the vision, see what Mansfield can be and are fighting relentlessly to get there. We have fearless people who say ‘let’s try this, let’s try that, I’ve seen this work elsewhere, let’s try it here.’” Though she’s too humble to brag about it, Nikia is one of those people. She is the director of college and career readiness at Mansfield Senior High School, and serves on the Richland County Foundation board. She plays a key role in inspiring young people to stay in Mansfield, or motivating them to — like she did — come back home.
“I love the culture,” says Nikia. “There’s an energy here. Anybody can find their niche here. But at the end of the day, I love that it’s just a chill place to live and raise my family.”

ELEVATED EATS

Dine outdoors in the middle of the blueberry fields or inside a warm, wood-clad dining room, sourced from trees on the farm.
AL FRESCO AMBIANCE
Dine in the idyllic countryside or amidst bustling city life. Black Dog Tavern at Deer Ridge Golf Course features a giant, elevated deck overlooking the course itself — visit in the fall for breathtaking views of colorful foliage. Uniontown Brewing Co. makes its home in a pre-Civil War building that for more than a century was a furniture store downtown. Kick back and sip slowly on the sprawling patios at 1285 Winery surrounded by lush greenery, blueberry bushes and a gorgeous firepit.
SWEET ENDINGS
And who can forget dessert? We’re just going to say it: Wishmaker House Bed & Breakfast makes some of the best cheesecake you’ll ever try! The hefty, towering slices rotate through flavors like classic New York style, pistachio and bourbon caramel.
Malabar Farm Restaurant’s creme brulee du jour and DLX’s four-layer carrot and chocolate cakes are equally worthy mentions that’ll have you ordering seconds to go.
FOR THE GREENER GOOD
Farming goes beyond the fields in Mansfield. Thanks to North End Community Improvement Collaborative, Inc. (NECIC), previously unused spaces within Mansfield’s city limits have been turned into micro farms through its Gro-Op Urban Farm program. These green spaces are used to grow fresh fruits and vegetables that are shared directly with local restaurants, individuals, schools and markets. The program is helping beautify the region while getting produce into the hands of families and businesses that need it.
