On behalf of the city of North Ridgeville and the North Ridgeville Chamber of Commerce, I’m pleased to present the 2024-25 North Ridgeville Magazine, produced by Great Lakes Publishing and made possible by the financial support of our local businesses and advertisers. In this edition, you’ll find a city resource guide and Chamber of Commerce directory, as well as our community map.
It may go without saying, but in North Ridgeville, you’ll find a community that cares. This is exemplified by our Faces of North Ridgeville, featuring residents who are getting involved, contributing their talents and making a positive difference. Our local businesses are also important to the fabric of our community, whether big or small. In this issue, you’ll read about six of these businesses that are providing valuable services to our residents, as well as economic opportunity.
Also in this issue of North Ridgeville Magazine, we are highlighting how we are creating a stronger, more connected community through upcoming transportation system improvements. In addition, we’re going inside the recently renovated North Ridgeville Branch Library to share how updated facilities and new technologies are changing the way we think about this important community resource.
I hope you enjoy reading about all that’s happening in North Ridgeville! You can stay connected with us by visiting our website at nridgeville.org and following our city departments on social media. Sign up for our monthly e-newsletter and keep an eye out for my weekly videos reporting the latest city news.
Sincerely,
Mayor Kevin Corcoran

A Meaningful Look at Mobility
Key projects examine the practicality of getting through town safely — no matter the mode of transportation.
By Christine Schaffran
Administrators are looking at the big picture when it comes to connectivity throughout the city of North Ridgeville and making plans to ensure the area is user friendly for bikes, pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Here are some upcoming projects that are meant to address both cars and foot traffic.
Active Transportation Plan
A citywide master plan update in the spring revealed a desire within the community for more connectivity when it comes to non-motorized travel.
“We’re really looking at places where there might be deficiencies in our sidewalk network or places where it would make sense to install trails to connect neighborhoods or connect people with destinations,” says North Ridgeville Planning Director Kim Lieber.
The Active Transportation Plan aims to bridge the gap between neighborhoods for routes commonly traveled to schools and shopping centers, Lieber says. The city is partnering with the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency on the endeavor and sought public input via a survey sent to residents in the spring and two public input meetings held over the summer. The information-gathering portion of the project will be completed this fall.
The intent is to use the information from the Active Transportation Plan in tandem with the Safe Routes to School Program to pursue funding from a variety of county, state and federal resources to improve existing trails and sidewalks or build additional segments at low or no cost to taxpayers, Lieber notes.
Mayor Kevin Corcoran says the intent of the plan is to take a systematic approach to making a long-term plan that can be carried out by future generations. He adds the biggest focal points are on increasing safety, encouraging active lifestyles and making school routes safer.
“We’re trying to present a more connected community, so people will be encouraged to be more active,” he explains. “We know that exercise is
providing hospice care, quality skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and long-term care for more than 60 years in Cleveland’s west side communities.
Our goal is to deliver the highest standard of care across all the services we provide to all the seniors we serve.
O’Neill Healthcare Hospice offers in home care and comfort anywhere in Lorain or Cuyahoga counties. Our dedicated caregivers are available 24/7/365 to provide the most exceptional care for you and your family.

The intended future gateway improvements at the Stoney Ridge-Mills-Avalon roundabout
improved connectivity will make people’s outdoor time more enjoyable, which may lead to better health outcomes.”
Stoney Ridge Road, Mills Road and Avalon Drive
Roundabout
Dubbed the “peanut roundabout” due to its shape, the double roundabout at the intersection of Stoney Ridge Road, Mills Road and Avalon Drive is one of only two of its kind in Ohio. Construction began this fall and will impact traffic in the area with a 90-day road closure, says City Engineer Christina Eavenson.
Avon Belden Road and Chestnut Ridge Road
Roundabout
Initially scheduled to undergo construction in the spring, a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Avon Belden Road and Chestnut Ridge Road is on hold while utility issues are addressed, Eavenson says.
The city and the Ohio Department of Transportation are partnering on the project, which is expected to include improvements to lighting, storm sewers, signage and pavement markings.
Eavenson adds that a third roundabout project at Sugar Ridge and Bender roads is in the preliminary stages.
Building the Future
A new high school and transportation building will accommodate the district’s widespread growth and offer a modern learning environment. By Kristen Hampshire
North Ridgeville City School District grows by about 150 students annually, and some years even more, says Superintendent Roxann Ramsey-Caserio, citing the community’s positive expansion and development for an ongoing wave of new families.
“We have added 17 AP courses during the time I’ve been here, and we have really grown programmatically to include many new career technical education opportunities right here on campus,” Caserio says. “Despite the overcrowding, our amazing teachers continue to find creative ways to provide opportunities to students.”
The original high school building was constructed in 1967 for about 900 students. Today, there are 1,500 students.
“A new building will provide a much more modern environment for our staff and students,” says Matt Yunker, the district’s director of operations, noting a new maintenance and transportation facility that will also house buses.
Last November, voters helped pass Issue 16, a $143-million bond levy to fund a new high school. In March 2024, the schools and the city held the State of North Ridgeville Address focused on “building North Ridgeville” to plan for future growth, with residents voicing interest in a performing arts center, natatorium and career education spaces. The district enlisted ThenDesign Architecture of Willoughby and recently approved Hammond Construction of Uniontown as the construction manager for the project.
Caserio estimates a five- to six-year process for the new high school, which will be located south of the existing building.
The original levy, which did not pass, included an elementary school. The district has since retrofitted its Liberty Elementary School campus with eight new mobile classrooms connected to the building and an enclosed gym. Safe, secure movable walls now replace dividers between learning pods.
“There’s plenty of room to grow in the Academic Center for grades three to eight that opened in 2016, and Ranger High Tech Academy is the only publicly accredited STEAM school in Lorain County,” Caserio says of district wins, which include the new high school on the forefront.
“A new building will provide a much more modern environment for our staff and students.”

A New Chapter
North Ridgeville’s library is a gathering place with a focus on lifelong learning.
By Linda Feagler
The North Ridgeville Branch Library is speaking volumes when it comes to helping patrons forge new pathways to inspiration.
Funded in part by a 1.91 mill levy passed by residents in 2019 — along with support from the Lorain Public Library Foundation — the 27,500-squarefoot gathering place has undergone a $2.65 million renovation that features a variety of popular amenities.
“When our building was completed in 2003, the focus was on including a computer lab,” says Anne Godec, who joined the Lorain Public Library System in 2017 and was named North Ridgeville branch manager in February.
“But times have changed and needs have evolved. Before starting the renovation, we toured other libraries and explored what our community depends on a library having today.”
They include a dedicated Teen Space (complete with a PlayStation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch), spacious meeting rooms, seating options and additional power outlets for those wishing to plug in their own laptops.
The library’s new Create Space is designed to help makers of all skill levels master their craft. Machinery includes a laser cutter/engraver for designing objects including coasters and bookmarks
from wood, acrylic, fabric and paper; a 3D printer that makes PDF files come to life in a new dimension and a 3D scanner that creates replications for printing; a CNC milling machine, ideal for cutting thick wood and metal; a Cricut for personalizing items; a sublimation printer and heat press that generate heat transfer designs for items such as koozies, mouse pads and clothing; and long-arm quilting and embroidery machines.
Before trying their hand in the Create Space, patrons are required to enroll in a 101 class that focuses on how to operate the machines they wish to use.
Godec encourages patrons to call the library to discuss the project they have in mind with a staff member.
The library also offers traditional programs that include arts and crafts lessons, book discussions, movie nights, cooking classes and health talks.
“Learning goes on in a variety of formats,” Godec reflects. “We have people who engage in learning from the printed word, and people who are learning in hands-on ways. We’re not just about books anymore. We’re all about encouraging lifelong learning for everyone.”
“We’re not just about books anymore. We’re all about encouraging lifelong learning for everyone.”

Kennedy Health & Fitness
Now in his second and larger facility in North Ridgeville, Personal Trainer Caleb Kennedy sees more expansion on the way due to a growing demand for tailored exercise programs that center on fundamentals to grow strength and empower clients to live their best lives.
“We support what you do every day by helping you bulletproof yourself against future injury and just making life easier in general,” says Kennedy, who customizes plans based on clients’ personal goals.
Kennedy’s background is athletic training for college teams, and he has since shifted to preventive maintenance.
“We help busy adults ages 25 and older who are intimidated by the typical gym or simply don’t have time, and together we design a structured fitness program to create lasting habits,” Kennedy says.

Dayton Freight
Access to the turnpike and highways, land with room to grow and a business-friendly environment drew Dayton Freight to its new North Ridgeville facility in April. The privately owned less-thantruckload (LTL) freight carrier tripled its capacity, going from 54 loading dock doors in its previous facility in a different community to 118 doors and a property more central to its customer base, says Barry McCoy, service center manager.
There are about 150 employees in the North Ridgeville truck terminal, and McCoy says the company hired 16 during its first four months in the city. “We ship coast to coast, with the help of our partners, and about 80% of our deliveries are next day,” he says, explaining that LTL is the “next level” of shipping beyond the post office, FedEx or UPS.
“We’ll pick up one or two skids of product,” he says.
“It’s a growing market with a lot of competition,” he says, adding that job opportunities await in North Ridgeville.

Lorain County Health & Dentistry
For 23 years, Lorain County Health & Dentistry has provided accessible care as a community health center, driven by a mission to serve. It is one of the largest safety net providers of primary and preventive care for patients of all ages, especially focusing on those who might not otherwise receive services because of socioeconomic barriers.
The center opened a location in North Ridgeville and offers family medicine, dentistry, dental hygiene and integrated behavioral health. Once fully staffed, President and CEO Stephanie Wiersma expects the location to see up to 5,000 patients annually.
“Patients who come to see us trust us,” she says. “They get excellent care and are treated with compassion and respect.”
Wiersma founded the center in 2002 and is passionate about the difference it makes in so many lives, evident by statistical outcomes and patients sharing their feelings about the care. She says, “The most rewarding thing is knowing we have made an impact on the broader community for all these years.”

Culver’s
Culver’s is known for its fresh, never-frozen ButterBurger, seared and served on a toasted bun. You can stack it all the way up to a triple, pick your favorite toppings, pair it with a side and call it a satisfying meal. Aside from a menu that has grown a following across the nation (there are currently 990 locations), Tammy Lehar says the Culver’s culture is what makes every visit memorable.
“It’s the hospitality, quality and restaurant experience,” she says. “We make sure that every guest leaves happy.”
The Lehars also are partnered with the Canton location and own the Strongsville and Avon locations and noticed guests from across the counties were traveling to the restaurant. North Ridgeville presented an ideal spot for Culver’s.
“We don’t just sell burgers — we care about the community,” Lehar says of their involvement in the chamber and with the schools, including hosting dine-to-donate initiatives. “We take great pride in our people and providing jobs and opportunities.”
The client roster for barbers Travis Hobbs and Tom Starr includes Cleveland Browns players like defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II and Cavaliers names like Sam Merrill and Max Strus.
The owners of full-service Ridge Barbershop describe their shop as traditional “with a modern edge.”
“We offer everything under the sun of barbering, from shaves to hair designs,” says Hobbs, relating that months into opening the location, they hired an eighth barber.
Hobbs has competed in “barber battles” across the country, bringing home national awards for his styling and designs. Both Hobbs and Starr have children in North Ridgeville schools and are committed not only to enhancing clients’ style but enriching the community. They share a passion for service.
“We are dedicated to using our talents to empower and uplift others,” Starr says.
The shop is open seven days a week, and Hobbs and Starr encourage anyone to stop in — everyone makes the cut.

FACES OF NORTH RIDGEVILLE
TERRI LANHAM
Dementia Education Advocate
Pulling back the curtain from the mystique that shrouds dementia was one driving force behind Terri Lanham’s desire for North Ridgeville to become a Dementia-Friendly Community. The 35year resident, who is also a care coordinator for Kendal At Home in Westlake since 2011, says her passion for earning the distinction from Dementia Friendly
America reached a fever pitch when a woman approached her after an information session at the library and tearfully admitted her husband had dementia and questioned why she had no knowledge of the services available to them. Lanham says she hopes to soften misconceptions of the condition through education. “It’s not like measles or the flu. You can’t catch it,” she notes. “But you can surely help people with dementia. A smile goes a long way.”
Lanham continues to host Dementia Friends sessions locally and in the business sectors.
DAWN AND DALE FITZ
Volunteers For Every Cause
Behind the scenes is where Dawn Fitz prefers to be, but her credits run a mile long. The mom of two has been volunteering everywhere from the PTA and Girl Scouts to the Lions Club, Leo Club as an advisor, Citizens for Better Schools as treasurer and Charter Review Committee member since her family moved to North Ridgeville in 1997. Also the HR/personnel
specialist at North Ridgeville City Schools, Fitz doesn’t shy away from hard work or a project that could use a little muscle to propel it along, such as the Veterans Memorial Committee, where she currently serves as secretary. Right beside her lending brawn and brains to each passion project is her husband, Dale. His list of community service credits includes moving pavers and laying mulch for the Veterans Memorial,

NICOLE AND BRENDEN HALES
A Fresh Take on Health Care
It’s been a year since Nicole and Brenden Hales opened the doors to Transcendence Health on Center Ridge Road. The husband-and-wife team created the alternative medicine practice as
a way to connect with and individualize a care plan for each patient — something Nicole felt was lacking in her former corporate health care position. While Brenden looks to treat chronic pain with functional medicine, chiropractic care and neuro-acupuncture, the goal is to answer the plea for quality health care — something the Hales hear loud and clear. And with a focus on “health span” instead of lifespan, clients can expect to find support on how to achieve the strongest version of themselves. “Transcendence Health is … a whole new way of what health care should be versus just sick care,” Nicole says.
FRANK KRUPKA
Community Comes First
It might take Frank Krupka “forever to buy a gallon of milk,” due to the number of people he runs into, but the man of many hats wouldn’t have it any other way. The veterinarian, who is part owner of Avon Lake Animal Clinic and a resident of North Ridgeville since 2005, is a passionate supporter of all pet animals,
community service and coaching soccer. When he’s not working at home on his farm among the chickens, goats, mini donkey, market hogs, market lambs, market steer and mini horse, he’s leading a pack of Boy Scouts or volunteering his time with the Lorain County Fair. And after 10 seasons on the soccer field, he frequently runs into the boys he mentored who still affectionately refer to him as “coach.” — Christine Schaffran

WE MAKE HELMETS AND CAREERS!
Being a part of a team means being a part of something bigger. At Riddell, that connection between factory floor and football fields around the world is what drives us. It’s why we’re here. We make football helmets.
At Riddell, we are also a part of something bigger. When we send a helmet down the line, we know that helmet is going to an athlete to protect them on the field, while they’re playing the game we all love. Come join our team.
