Budding flowers and sprouting greens make Glass City Metropark a must-see in the springtime. Enjoy a leisurely stroll or bike ride along scenic trails as the park bursts into bloom, taking in the vibrant colors and fresh scents of the season.
Kids can enjoy their time outside after the cold weather at Prairie and Grosbeak Discovery Play Area, featuring a 41-foot tall adventure tower with climbing nets and a covered slide, kid-friendly zip line, swings, hillside slides and stump climbs. Picnic areas like the Pollinator Shelter mean lunch with a view.
Along with the flowers, spring brings a calendar of special events, from arts festivals to concerts, adding to the lively yet peaceful atmosphere. The park is also alluring to anglers this time of year with its prime fishing spots, as well as canoe and kayak river access.
Lush greenery and unbeatable views make the park a hub of summer activities including a one-of-a-kind water play experience. The new Glass City Riverwalk meanders along the Maumee River, inviting visitors to take a morning jog or evening stroll to enjoy breathtaking views.
The park’s outdoor pavilions provide a shady spot for picnics, events and activities, from fitness classes to children’s programs. Don your roller skates to feel the wind in your hair as you loop around The Ribbon, which turns into an open-air skating, blading and scootering trail from April to October.
In August, don’t miss the Glass City Jazz Festival near the Glass City Metropark Pavilion. Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket and enjoy a day of good food, local arts and crafts vendors and live jazz music from regional and national artists.
As the leaves start to change, autumn ushers in a new way to experience Glass City Metropark. Take a turn at the park’s scenic overlooks to take in panoramic views of the Maumee River and surrounding landscape adorned in fiery hues of red, orange and gold.
The park’s fire pits become a popular gathering spot during the cooler fall evenings. Cozy up around the fire, roast marshmallows, share stories and enjoy the starlit sky.
No visit would be complete without a stop at The Garden by Poco Piatti for a delectable meal. The Mediterranean-inspired menu offers bold flavors all year long, from refreshing salads to hearty wraps and local brews. Don’t miss the riverfront views!
Winter transforms the landscape of Glass City Metropark into a snowy wonderland, the frozen river and glistening trees creating a serene and picturesque setting. And thankfully, a host of activities for all ages makes the cold more fun.
Whether you’re a seasoned skater or not, The Ribbon is an ice-skating experience unlike any other. The 1,000-foot ribbon meanders through the park so you can glide and enjoy beautiful scenery. Bring skates of your own or rent a pair on-site. Kids and kids-at-heart can head to the new Glass City sledding hill at the first sight of powder, open until 8 p.m. Once the cold sets in, make a beeline for The Garden by Poco Piatti to warm up with s’mores kits and hot cocoa.
Think you can’t get outside in the city? Think again. In Toledo, you’ll find plenty of ways to stretch your legs and experience the world outside your door.
By Madeline AndersonHear the (bird) call of the great outdoors! At Maumee Bay State Park, hike the trails among scenic woods and marshes, visit the nature center and spot more than 300 bird species. Make a weekend of it and book a cabin or resort room. The birds are year-round, but the Biggest Week in American Birding is a 10-day festival every May chock-full of birding workshops, guided walks, presentations and social events. Explore dozens of hiking trails across 12,000 diverse acres of parks and nature preserves at Metroparks Toledo — including the Toledo Botanical Garden and the historic Fallen Timbers Battlefield. Go beyond your backyard fauna and see animals from all over the world (10,000 of them and 720 species!) at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium. Attend camps, learn about conservation efforts, try the Aerial Adventure Course and go to year-round events. Don’t skip a trip to family farms around the area, including MacQueen Orchards, Country Lane Tree Farm and Fleitz Pumpkin Farm, where you can shop local fruits, vegetables and sweet treats and get into all sorts of fun.
There’s a lot of river to roam on the Maumee! As the largest watershed of any Great Lakes-fed river, the Maumee River offers thousands of square miles to explore and it even connects six Metroparks — Providence, Bend View, Farnsworth, Side Cut, Middlegrounds and Glass City. Access the winding Maumee River Water Trail from 39 locations via canoe or kayak, with a variety of amenities and activities dotting the 107-mile stretch. If fishing is your pastime, spring will be your best catch, when one of the largest migrations of river-bound walleye east of the Mississippi make their way up the Maumee. The “spring run” attracts thousands of anglers to the best spots, including Side Cut Metropark. The river isn’t Toledo’s only water destination, of course — the western basin of Lake Erie is a boater’s paradise. Check out boat tours, ferries, canoe and kayak launches, marinas and more from many spots along the lake. For the absolute best views, be it lake or river, book your passage on a J&M Cruise Lines vessel — The Sandpiper and Glass City Pearl don’t disappoint.
Toledo’s reputation as a vibrant arts community is on display at the Glass City River Wall. This installation at the ADM grain silos depicts lively sunflowers and three Native American women, representing the original agriculturalists of the region and Toledo’s diverse and innovative spirit. Learn more about this visual gateway to the city at glasscityriverwall.org. In the summer, follow the music to an outdoor concert. The Toledo Zoo Amphitheater features both world-renowned acts at its Live Nation series and free local shows at Music Under the Stars. Dance the night away to favorite artists at Centennial Terrace in Sylvania, which hosts national bands and regional acts at its premier outdoor venue, and visit Toledo Botanical Garden for Jazz in the Garden, where you can bask in the smooth sounds of local jazz legends as you commune with nature. Head to a local sports venue — whether cheering on the Toledo Mud Hens, the University of Toledo football team or catching ARCA Racing, get in on the action at Fifth Third Field, Glass Bowl Stadium and Toledo Speedway
Let local historian, Tedd Long, guide you through popular areas of the Toledo region, visit holytoledohistory.com, a website for choose-your-ownadventure audio tours. Drive along the Maumee, walk through Old West End or take your pick of other tours at your own pace and on your own time. Tedd’s there to guide you!
Toledo has long had a knack for inspiring passion and determination. It’s not surprising, then, that the city is home to many locally owned, must-stop spots that have seen growth and recognition. Savor the flavors of Toledo in the places these standouts were founded.
Throughout its history, Toledo has been steeped in small customized manufacturing of items such as glass and bicycles. So, Toledo Spirits Co. co-founder Andrew Newby was surprised to find out that the city never had a distillery — even pre-Prohibition.
“There wasn’t an evolution into the beverage space, especially given that agribusiness is so key to the local economy,” he says, noting that spirits labeled as coming from Toledo were distilled elsewhere and then brought into Toledo to be blended and bottled.
Newby, along with co-founders Lukas Kummer and Dustin Wade, started Toledo Spirits Co. just down the
street from where those spirits were blended. But they’re making everything from scratch, including the popular Heart of Glass strawberry vodka, East Side Gin and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot whiskey. The trio also opened Bellwether, an on-site cocktail bar where you can get a taste of Toledo Spirits Co. concoctions and good eats. They ship their products nationwide to more than 40 states.
“You don’t know how it’s going to go until you put something in a bottle, put a label on it and put it on a shelf somewhere,” says Newby. “And we still all just get such joy out of people enjoying what we’re making.” toledospirits.com
Before expanding to spots as near as Cleveland and as far away as Denver and Dallas, Prakash Karamchandani and HoChan Jang started Balance Pan-Asian Grille in 2010 with the idea of bringing Asian-fusion food in a fast-casual setting to Toledo, all while using the freshest ingredients possible.
“We grew up here,” says Karamchandani. “We both went to University of Toledo, so the thought of doing this somewhere else wasn’t even an option. Toledo is really cool. People will support you if you’re from here.” Balance has since expanded to six locations, three of which are in northwest Ohio, including downtown Toledo, Sylvania and Perrysburg. And Karamchandani expects more to come.
Balance has built its following on delicious Asianstyle tacos, bowls and bubble teas. Many ingredients come from its 8,600-square-foot aquaponics farm in downtown Toledo or are sourced from local farms.
“At the end of the day, you’d be pretty hardpressed to find something on our menu that isn’t just flat out delicious,” says Karamchandani. “We try and do as much as we can as a business to be responsible, sustainable and give back to the community.” balancegrille.com
Taking flight has a couple different meanings at The Flying Joe, a cafe offering coffee, food such as breakfast sandwiches and quiches, and craft cocktails. Founded by Becky Ohm and her husband, John — both of whom are former U.S. Air Force Pilots — the original spot in Perrysburg offers coffee and cocktail tasting flights. Select offerings are available at their downtown Toledo location.
“People really love coming in and seeing what our flight crew has concocted,” says Ohm, who was the first female fighter pilot in the state of Ohio. “Our flight crew can also make a custom drink on the spot for you, which is fun for the customer and the crew member.”
That fun has really taken off, leading to The Flying Joe being named one of the 10 best independent coffee shops in the United States by USA Today in 2023. Sky-high favorites include the Flying Joe Mocha made with white chocolate and caramel and the Flying Dutchman sandwich with egg, aged cheddar, sausage, applewood smoked bacon, housemade maple aioli and waffles in place of bread. But the cafe is also popular with locals because of its welcoming vibe.
“People love connecting in our spaces,” says Ohm. “They love our staff and love seeing their community in the shop.” theflyingjoe.com
Whether you’re new to Toledo or just wanting to see the Glass City in a new light, don’t miss these 10 signature experiences — and what to do at each!
By Ruth Corradi Beach1. Toledo Museum of Art: TMA is an amazing place — it’s free, and it’s home to one of the most important glass art collections in the world as part of its 30,000+ works in over 40 galleries. After you’ve viewed the incredible collection in the museum and Glass Pavilion, check out the “hot shop,” a glass studio where you can watch artists at work and even purchase the items you’ve just seen them create.
2. Glass City River Wall: See the largest mural in the nation, spanning the width of 28 silos at the city’s ADM grain facility. Completed in 2022, the massive mural is covered with sunflowers and features three real people selected by artist Gabe Gault — two women and a child — each from a different Native American tribe. You’ll get great views of the wall from Interstate 75 and downtown Toledo, or hop on a J&M Cruise Lines boat for a pretty spectacular float-by.
3. Toledo Botanical Garden: Spend an afternoon wandering the garden’s more than 60 gorgeous acres. Armed with the plant collections map, you can use your smartphone to take a picture and get full identification of any plant that catches your eye. The Doneghy Inclusive Garden is wheelchair accessible and includes ADA-compliant seating in a pergola on the grounds, a sensory water wall and plantings with olfactory and touch sensory components.
4. Imagination Station: Toledo’s science center is all about experiential learning for the family. Enter the Ames Room, where perspectives are tweaked so you will look tiny or huge, depending on where you stand. Build a model car and race it against others, all using pressurized air. Ride a bicycle 20 feet above the ground, suspended on a 1-inch cable with a 275-lb. counterweight. Or “fly” a real Saab 340 jet — sit behind the controls and let your imagination take flight.
5. Fort Meigs: Ohio’s War of 1812 Battlefield: Step back in time at Fort Meigs, a War of 1812 museum and reconstructed woodenwalled fort. In 1813, 1,200 American troops held fast here for 10 days and helped turn the tide on the war. April through October, take a tour led by costumed guides and check out the on-site visitors center to get the full time-traveling effect.
While there’s plenty to keep you busy in Toledo, the fun continues with these day-trips that are well worth the trip. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums in Fremont is found on President Hayes’ 25-acre wooded estate, Spiegel Grove, and is home to the nation’s first presidential library. Tour the home and see the original White House gates, relocated after Hayes’ presidency. Cedar Point in Sandusky is another record-breaking attraction with its 18 roller coasters, four hotels, campground and sandy beach that keep families coming back year after year. The African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton offers a true safari experience right here in Ohio. Traverse this drivethrough safari to try and spot an eastern bongo or Bactrian camel!
Did you know that Destination Toledo is a Certified Autism Center (CAC)? This designation granted by the IBCCES means that the entire Destination Toledo staff is knowledgeable and capable of providing travel support to individuals on the autism spectrum and to those with sensory needs. VisitToledo.org/AutismTravel
6. Toledo Mud Hens: Cheer on the city’s century-old minor league baseball team and experience exciting game-day promotions, theme nights and delicious eats in and outside the ballpark. Before and after the game, explore Hensville! This entertainment district houses the Swamp Shop to get your team gear, summertime live music in Hensville Park and year-round activations, including holiday lights.
7. Toledo Zoo & Aquarium: Where on the globe do you want to go today? Visit animals in replications of their natural habitats, including Arctic Encounter, Reptile House and Primate Forest. Hop on the Safari Railway, which traverses the zoo’s African Savannah, or get a bird’s eye view from the Expedition Africa Aerial Adventure Course. The Aquarium features more than 3,000 aquatic animals in 178,000 gallons of water. Don’t miss the touch tank, where visitors can touch sting rays, horseshoe crabs and even sharks.
8. Oak Openings Preserve: This 5,000-acre park is the largest of the Metroparks. Book a night or two in the Cannaley Treehouse Village, the only public treehouse village in the country. Choose from five private treehouses (two of which are ADA-accessible) or three tent/hammock platforms. Thursday through Sunday, drop by HEAVY Wheelhouse at the trailhead of Oak Opening’s Beach Ridge Bike Trail for some locally brewed suds from HEAVY Beer Company or a fresh brew of Black Kite Coffee.
9. National Museum of the Great Lakes: See hundreds of nautical artifacts, including a large collection of commercial and recreational flags on the Great Lakes and 40 hands-on interactive activities. Learn about 1600s fur traders, 1900s rum runners and thousand-foot vessels sailing the Great Lakes today. Between May and October, visitors can board two ships: The Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship (which carried coal) and the Museum Tug Ohio (a former fire tug).
10. Maumee Bay State Park: More than 1,300 acres of beauty are just 5 miles east of Toledo. This sprawling state park includes an 18-hole, Scottish-style golf course and expansive Lake Erie shoreline. Spend a day at the beach or on the links and wind down in the evening roasting marshmallows at the Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference Center, a resort-like venue that includes a restaurant, paddle boats and plenty of trails. Rent a cabin for a more secluded experience.
You don’t have to be in the market for your future alma mater to visit the University of Toledo (UToledo). Take a wander through the 450+ acre main campus to admire the architecture (University Hall and the Field House are in an ornate Gothic style) and the natural scenery (the Ottawa River flows through the heart of the school), or to enjoy a comedy show or musical performance in the Center for Performing Arts’ Recital Hall.
Drop in on game day and you’ll find the campus buzzing — UToledo’s athletic program consistently ranks among the top in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The 2022–23 season saw the Rockets winning the MAC championships in football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s crosscountry. Home of Rockets Football, the more than 26,000-seat Glass Bowl Stadium draws capacity crowds, and new fan amenities like a family-friendly Kid Zone and upgraded seating in the midfield sections mean an even more exciting gridiron experience. Savage Arena likewise packs them in — Toledo women’s basketball has led the MAC in attendance for the last 30 seasons.
Of course, if you are a prospective student or have a family member who is, there are plenty of reasons to put Toledo on your short list. The university offers more than 300 undergrad and graduate degree programs, 31 of which are nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Plus, its proximity to downtown means big city culture and amenities without sacrificing that classic college town vibe — it’s the best of both worlds.
University of Toledo Toledo RocketsImmerse yourself in culture through a variety of diverse community events. Indulge in local cuisine, from upscale to casual, even dine lakeside.
