Winter warm-up
National Packard Museum
When the weather outside is frightful, a trip to the newly expanded Medici Museum of Art is the perfect remedy. The museum is home to a world-renowned collection of Norman Rockwell paintings, including many of his famous works for the Boy Scouts of America. There’s even more art to see at the Trumbull Art Gallery, which highlights local artists in several exhibitions throughout the year, and a gift shop full of unique treasures. Car buffs will love the National Packard Museum, which features a rotating display of antique cars and memorabilia from the famous Packard Company founded in Warren (don’t miss the antique motorcycles exhibit at the museum January–May). Continue your tour through history with a visit to The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial Museum to see personal belongings and campaign artifacts from the 25th U.S. President. Kids tired of the cold and snow? Schedule a trip to the Oh Wow! Children’s Center for Science and Technology, where youngsters can ignite their imaginations with interactive exhibits exploring the earth, engineering, energy and more. If your family likes to rock and roll, lace up your roller skates for a few laps around the Cortland Roller Rink. Have a team of puzzlers? Work together to beat the escape room at Steel Valley Nightmare and Escape or change history at Escape History Escape Rooms. For a treasure-hunting adventure, download Trumbull County’s Where’s Wally? Mobile Pass and em-BARK on a cute scavenger hunt across the county to find your own Wally plush toy. Still need to get some energy out? Bounce, climb and play on 10,000 square feet of trampolines at Extreme Air Trampoline Park. Turn the fun into a multi-day affair with a stay at the stately Peter Allen Inn, which hosts Charles Dickens dinner
theater, holiday teas and other winter activities (make reservations a month or two in advance if you’d like to spend the night). 6 || Trumbull County Visitors Guide
Think Spring
Get a glimpse at new spring blooms with a bike ride along the Western Reserve Greenway or grab your binoculars and search for migratory birds and especially bald eagles — Mosquito Creek and Grand River wildlife areas are birdwatching hotspots. It’s also a great time to tee off at one of Trumbull County’s more than 15 scenic golf courses or try your hand at one of five challenging disc golf fairways (be sure to bring your own discs with you). After a morning round, pick up a cinnamon roll at McDivitt Family Maple Café in Southington or a cup of coffee at Market House Caffe in Howland. Elsewhere in the county, get breakfast no matter when you wake up with all-day breakfast at Rhonda’s Emerald Diner in Hubbard, or at Raptis Family Restaurant in Howland. Mesopotamia is home to the second-largest Amish community in the state and springtime is the perfect time to check out the Commons, the town’s scenic historic district. All 21 buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the quaint End of the Commons, one of Ohio’s oldest general stores that’s stocked with fry pies, candies, Amish collectibles and more. The Old Stone House, built in 1825, is the perfect spot for an overnight in the area. Looking for a great date night? Take in a concert, play or comedy show at Packard Music Hall, managed by the JAC Entertainment Group. The Warren Civic Music Association hosts concerts at the venue in an array of genres throughout the year.
TAKE A ROAD TRIP ANY MONTH OF THE YEAR! Every season is an opportunity to experience Trumbull in a brand-new way. Whenever you like to get out and explore, there’s plenty for you to find.

Endless Summer
Summertime means festival season. Start celebrating in June at the Trumbull County African American Achievers Festival and enjoy great eats, arts and music. In July, rides, animals and plenty Mahoning River of fantastic food await at the Trumbull County Fair. For more fest fun, check out the Mesopotamia Ox Roast Antiques & Flea Market for great chow and unique antique treasures. Kids and kids at heart can experience nostalgic summer entertainment taking in a movie at one of Trumbull County’s two classic drive-in theaters — the Elm Road and the Skyway. Challenge the family to a friendly round at the Putt-Putt Fun Center of Warren, one of the oldest mini golf courses in the country and designed by Donald Clayton, the founder of Putt-Putt. Serve up some strikes at one of the bowling alleys across Trumbull County, including long-time local favorites Echo Lanes and Cortland Lanes. Water lovers can enjoy a journey on the Mahoning River via kayak — Mahoning River Adventures will provide the ride, boat, life jacket and paddle — or bring along your boat and splash around on one of Ohio’s largest lakes at Mosquito Lake State Park. After a day on the river, rock out at an outdoor show at the River Rock at the Amp concert series, with the world’s greatest cover bands performing the hits of Pink Floyd, Queen and the Eagles. Also look for concerts on the lawns at many of the town’s community gazebos. For something a little different, get a unique up-close-and-personal experience with zebras, camels, bison and more than 350 other exotic creatures on a safari through Wagon Trails Animal Park. Want to extend your summer getaway? You’ll find everything from camping sites to charming B&Bs, inns and national hotels in the area.
All For Fall
Take a walking tour of the historic mansions on Millionaires Row — once the homes to political and industry leaders. Book one with a guide or pick up a self-guided tour map at the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau in Warren. Those looking for a side of scares on their tour will love the Fine Arts Council and Trumbull County Historical Society’s Ghost Walk — guides and historical actors tell the terrifying tales of Warren on a walk around historic areas. Speaking of scares, two local wineries pull out all the haunts for Halloween fun (with or without adult “spirits”): Greene Eagle Winery hosts a re-enactment of scenes from the classic tale “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and Woodland Cellars invites brave souls to explore the Haunted Mansion & Hallowine Trail (both attractions feature mild scares but are family friendly). Pick your own Halloween pumpkins and sunflowers or challenge yourself at the corn mazes at both Hartford Orchards and Kuchta Farms, the latter a Braceville staple since 1954. Another long-time local favorite, Kravitz Delicatessen, serves up fall-perfect comfort foods like corn beef and pastrami sandwiches with a steamy side cup of homemade wedding soup. Extend your fall getaway with a night at Julia’s Bed and Breakfast in Hubbard — most rooms have Jacuzzis and fireplaces and are perfect for a warm and cozy night in.

he Ernie Hall Aviation Museum in Warren, founded in 2014 to honor aviators advancing aeronautics, has a special focus on local flyers. A highlight is the 1947 PA-12 Super Cruiser renovated aircraft once owned by the museum’s namesake, who began his own flight school in 1915. Space travel is getting closer for ordinary earthlings, but can you imagine how brave space pioneers must have been? A half-scale Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Module (representing Neil Armstrong’s 1969 flight and his walk on the moon) can be seen for free at the First Flight Lunar Module site in Warren. More down to earth, but still absolutely beautiful, is Trumbull County’s 7,000-acre Mosquito Lake, surrounded by 2,483 acres of parkland, woodlands and marshes. Mosquito Lake State Park offers boating, fishing, camping, hiking and mountain biking. Nature lovers appreciate the tundra swans, great egrets, bald eagles and bass found in Ohio’s second largest inland lake.

If water can be called decadent, that description surely fits the five pool environments offered by The Grand Resort in Warren. A stunning outdoor resort pool with waterfalls and an Olympic-sized indoor pool are main attractions. But the outdoor Roman Bath, heated to 90 degrees, available all year and open to adults only, is unparalleled (the ancients really knew how to live!). If you can get out of the water, you’ll be enticed by fine dining and an incredible golf course. Warren’s Saratoga Restaurant and Catering, a family-owned restaurant, opened in 1916. It was famous in the 1930s for its turtle soup, but now patrons swear by Chef Pete’s Special, a sandwich made with ham, turkey and cheese dipped in egg. Sunrise Inn was established in 1929, also as a family restaurant, and in 1948 became Warren’s first pizza shop. Be sure to check out unique menu items like the Spaghetti and Meatball Deep Dish Pizza. Craving more pizza? How about pizzelles, wedding soup, cannoli and eggplant parmesan? The Italian Food Trail is a delectable opportunity to try more than 60 casual to fine dining sites in Trumbull County. Visit the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau to register for a free Italian Food Trail mobile pass. While on the website, learn about the Where’s Wally Scavenger Hunt that highlights businesses and locations within the county. Passes for both activities are available at exploretrumbullcounty.com.
The world’s largest drumsticks aren’t the kind that are found on wild turkeys at a state park. On display at Dave Grohl Alley in downtown Warren, the musical drumsticks are made from two 23-foot-long poplar logs. They pay homage to the rocker Grohl, Foo Fighters founder and former Nirvana drummer. String lights have been hung in the alley and an exterior art gallery has been added to expand on the unique attraction. Speaking of music and albums, shoppers can find records as well as art, collectibles, housewares, hardware and more than 150,000 used books at Market Square in Kinsman. The store’s 1957 soda fountain and deli will satisfy any stomach grumbles. If you have a need for speed, Hartford is the destination for you! The Sharon Speedway, a 3/8-mile dirt oval track, has been hosting races since 1929. You can cheer on the racers weekly from April through September, or attend special events at the track. See the last remaining covered bridge in Trumbull County in Newton Falls. Constructed in 1831, this bridge connects the banks of the Mahoning River. A covered crosswalk was added in 1921–22, so when you walk across it, you’re following in the footsteps of visitors and residents from 100 years of Trumbull County history.

Pine Lakes Golf Club is a PGA-approved teaching facility and offers a “Stay and Play” option for those who prefer to make golfing the focus of a weekend (or week-long) vacation. These days, Trumbull County continues to have a lasting legacy within the golfing community, with renowned courses like Avalon at Squaw Creek and Tamer Win Golf & Country Club. Play through part of the largest golf trail in the United States on the Penn Ohio Golf Trail, which spans 60 courses between western Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio. Stop in the on-site restaurant to celebrate a Pine Lakes great round at Bronzwood Golf Club Golf Club. The course at Hidden Oaks Golf Club is surrounded by old-growth trees that make for a challenging game of nine holes. Golfers wanting to tune up their game in winter can hit the indoor golf simulators at Avalon Lakes, where they can virtually golf anywhere in the world. id you know when you walk the fairways at heritage courses like the Old Avalon Golf Course, you’re literally walking on a piece of Trumbull County’s history? In the early 1900s, the county was booming thanks to the steel industry. Particularly from 1910 to 1920, the area’s population was growing exponentially as many immigrated in search of steel-working jobs. To protect the area’s citizens after World War I, a large portion of land was donated to the city of Warren to house individuals who contracted post-war influenza safely away from the city. When that need was overestimated and the city wound up owning empty land, the excess was allocated for a municipal golf course. By 1928, what was once swamp land had been transformed into the lush

the Inside Scoop Max Hoover, owner of Cockeye Creamery, shares his favorite flavors and things to do in Trumbull County.
Q: How did Cockeye Creamery get started? A: Opening a retail ice cream store so close to our already booming Cockeye BBQ restaurant was a no-brainer. From the first ice cream batch my father, best friend and I made together, we just knew we had created something special — something with legs.
Q: What are some of the most notable flavors? A: Our deep chocolate, fresh strawberry and French vanilla bean received national recognition two years in a row at the North American Ice Cream Association’s annual Ice Cream Clinic. But we also have over 25 flavors of super-premium ice creams that vary weekly, so there are plenty of opportunities to find a favorite. I always recommend trying a seasonal flavor. Q: What’s your favorite thing to do in Trumbull County? A: I am a pretty outdoorsy guy and thoroughly enjoy using the Greenway Trail to exercise. In the spring and summer, you’ll find me kayaking the Mahoning River.

The Perfect Double Act Kenny Haidaris (Sunrise Entertainment) and Mark Marvin (Downtown Development Group) talk about the newly restored Robins Theatre.
Q: How long did the theater restoration take? Mark: Two years. We started the renovation in January of 2018, and our grand reopening was January 9th, 2020: the 97th anniversary – to the day – of when it originally opened in 1923. Q: What does your 2022 lineup look like? Kenny: We’ll have all kinds of concerts, like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Buddy Guy, Ace Freely from Kiss and Air Supply. Plus, we’ll be showing several movies, live performances and even immersive events. We try to bring in an eclectic mix of everything.
Kenny Haidaris (left) and Mark Marvin (right)
ROBINS THEATRE: LAURA WATILO BLAKE, KENNY HAIDARIS AND MARK MARVIN: KITTY STEVENS
Q: What’s your favorite element of the theater? Kenny: The building has old bones, but it’s very technologically superior. The cool thing about this place is that with the new lighting elements, the personality changes with every show. Mark: The chandelier is our signature; every crystal and light was placed by hand. But the downstairs lounge (pictured) is also a really unique space to see.

SHOPPING
Hit the books With over 150,000 books, Market Square in Kinsman is a book lover’s (and shopper’s) paradise. Owner Don Sutton shares more about his store.
Q: What is the history behind Market Square? A: This building was built in 1894, and has always been retail on the main floor. My family had the drug store next door, so I bought this one 36 years ago and turned it into Market Square. From then, it really grew on its own; I just started bringing in things that interested me. Now it’s a book store and general store all rolled into one. Q: Other than the massive book collection, what’s Market Square’s claim to fame? A: We have the oldest continually operating soda fountain in Ohio – it’s been in use since the 1930s. It has 20 different flavors and can make ice cream sodas, phosphates, malts, milkshakes ... you name it.

Q: What draws people into the store? A: It’s a destination. There’s nothing else like this around, so every summer we’ll get campers especially coming through to visit. With the new deli, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon.
