FACES Friendly

Named after French general and American Revolution hero Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de LaFayette (yes, the one from Hamilton), Fayette County is full of history and charming communities. Check out a few things to do in these four towns.

Fayette County

Washington Court House

As the county seat of Fayette County, Washington Court House offers plenty to see and do. Connecting Chillicothe in nearby Ross County to Washington Court House, anyone who likes adventure can find it on the Paint Creek Recreational Trail. The 32-mile bicycle and walking trail follows an abandoned railroad corridor and is a popular spot for birders hoping to see woodpeckers, flycatchers, warblers and more. The trail conveniently runs a few blocks from the newly renovated Fayette County Historical Museum, which began renovations in 2023. The almost 150-year-old Victorian Gothic Italian-style building houses artifacts and exhibits on the history of the county. For a dose of family-friendly vintage excitement, head to Roller Haven Fun Center and bust out the side slide, hurricane or toe jam and more roller skating moves.

Bloomingburg

For a small village of less than 1,000 residents, Bloomingburg boasts a lot of history and town pride. Founded in 1815, and once the site of one of the first academies in Ohio, the little burg was a significant link on the Underground Railroad, and a handful of buildings that were used as stations are still standing. Each summer, that town pride is on full display at Community Day. Started in 2013, the day includes Bloomingburg Hall of Fame inductions, musical performances, a car show, fish fry, pie-baking contest and more.

Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville makes for a great stop for shopping, family fun and more. The main attraction is Destination Outlets, home to stores such as Clarks, Crocs, Eddie Bauer, Loft, Pottery Barn and more. It’s the perfect spot for retail therapy. If you prefer something splashier, the Jeffersonville Pool offers a waterslide, diving boards, concessions and more for a perfect summer day. Head to Joomak for authentic Korean fare after a long day of swimming. Somberly set downtown, the Jeffersonville Area Veterans Memorial Park features stone tablets etched with the names of local veterans, along with a column highlighting the various branches of the U.S. military and more.

New Holland

Another charming village with a small-town feel, New Holland was founded by settlers of Dutch descent and has seen its share of history, including the time after the Civil War when native Ohioan Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s Union Army reportedly marched through town. Fast forward to modern times, and New Holland is home to Country Cakes & Bakes, a must-stop bakery started by Beth Spangler a decade ago. From breakfast treats such as cinnamon rolls and various scones to double chocolate cake cookies and treats for weddings, it’s a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. If you’ve got a need for speed, the New Holland Car and Bike Show each spring is perfect for automotive enthusiasts. Take a look under the hood of classic muscle cars, vintage Jeeps, trucks and more.
