WHAT BETTER WAY TO GET TO KNOW AN AREA THAN FROM THE LOCALS? WE ASKED COMMUNITY LEADERS TO SHARE WHY THEY LOVE CANTON. FROM WINE LOVERS TO TROLL FANATICS AND MORE, THE STARK COUNTY COMMUNITY IS DIVERSE, PASSIONATE AND FRIENDLY. Interviews by Linda Feagler, Matt Mitchell and Rich Warren
Tony Ly, Basil Asian Bistro
Restaurateur Tony Ly is building a local restaurant empire. He’s the owner of Basil Asian Bistro, and in March he took over ownership of the Italian restaurant Lucca, both in downtown Canton. He also owns two other Basil locations in Wooster and Hamilton. In Akron he runs Sushi Katsu and Quarter Up Arcade Bar. What’s the secret to success in the restaurant business? The secret is that there’s no secret. It’s a lot of hard work and determination and putting in long hours. You also have to rely on your staff and give them room to grow so they’ll have a personal interest in the business. Why did you take over operation of Lucca? It’s an iconic downtown restaurant that was going to close due to the owner’s retirement. For a restaurant like Lucca to go dark would have been a shame, and since I’m a huge proponent of the renaissance in downtown Canton, I stepped in to keep it running. I also have personal associations with Lucca — I proposed to my wife there. What should first-time customers at your restaurants definitely try? You can’t go wrong with the Pad Thai at Basil, and at Lucca, I’m partial to the Gorgonzola Dolce. Actually, all our pastas are handmade at Lucca.

Do you anticipate any changes coming in 2022? I’m looking at the possibility of adding some Vietnamese street food to my menus, putting my own spin on the dishes I ate growing up. It’s another form of comfort food!
Community Scott Swaldo, Gervasi Vineyard
Scott Swaldo, the CEO and General Manager of Gervasi Vineyard, has been with the winery since the beginning. He loves helping provide a memorable experience for visitors. Why is Canton the ideal location for your winery resort? Canton has been our family’s home for more than 50 years; the winery’s name is my grandmother’s maiden name. We opened Gervasi Vineyard in 2010, and guests sometimes ask why we put something so luxurious in Canton. Our answer is ‘Why not Canton?’ We take pride in being the special celebration place and building memories. Why is Stark County an appealing place for business? People who live here, work here and own businesses here have a collaborative spirit to support one another. Any insider tips for visitors? In addition to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton is home to the National First Ladies’ Library, and the area has great golf courses, including Glenmoor.
SCOTT SWALDO: MATT SHIFFLER; AERIAL: GERVASI VINEYARD; GERVASI VINEAYRD: CASEY REARICK
Do you have any favorite Gervasi wines or entrées you recommend guests try? When you start a winery, your first wine is very special. For us, that would be Truscano, our signature Italian red, which debuted when we opened. In terms of food, there are a lot of things I love, but our signature dish is Tuscan Beef Short Ribs. It’s been featured at The Bistro since day one, and I don’t ever see it coming off the menu.

Jim Porter, Pro Football Hall of Fame
Jim Porter doesn’t remember a time when he didn’t love football. “Most kids count down the days until Christmas,” the Stark County native says. “I was counting down the days until the Hall of Fame enshrinement.” Porter, who assumed the position of president in October 2021, is excited about what will soon be in store for the 200,000 guests that visit each year. Why does football and the enshrinement captivate you? Football emulates life in many ways. So, when you follow the journey of Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers, you can see their football journey and many times see life’s ups and downs unfold as you hear their stories. What are some of the can’t-miss experiences? The Hall of Fame Gallery, where the Bronzed Busts are displayed; A Game for Life, a holographic theater experience; the Pro Football Today Gallery, which includes artifacts from the current season; the Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery, which includes the Vince Lombardi Trophy; and the Super Bowl Theater. I promise there is something here for every football fan and even the most passionate and knowledgeable fans will leave having learned something new. Are there new experiences or renovations visitors to the Hall will experience? We are working out details on a Sunday guest experience beginning fall of 2022 called BEST FOOTBALL DAY EVER. This program will give guests an opportunity to visit the Hall, watch a football game on our 36-foot screen with Hall of Famers and partake in tailgate-like experiences, all while enjoying the other great attractions at the Hall. We are always looking for ways to improve our guests’ experience and honor the Hall of Famers.

How has the Canton community played a role in the Hall of Fame’s success? The Hall would not even be in Canton without the community’s support dating back 60 years. We could not put together the annual celebrations we experience during the summer without the help of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Visit Canton and the thousands of volunteers and dedicated employees.
Michael Crawford, Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Co.
Michael Crawford is the President and CEO of Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Co., where he is dedicated to helping the enterprise develop sports-inspired destination, media and gaming experiences, including Hall of Fame Village in Canton.
MICHAEL CRAWFORD: MATT SHIFFLER; CONSTRUCTION AND RENDERING: HALL OF FAME RESORT & ENTERAINMENT
Why do you love Canton and Stark County? The people — there is such a sense of community that is embraced by those that live here, such a sense of pride and warmth. What’s it like working for Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Company? It’s incredibly gratifying to be a part of a company that is working to further the economic prosperity of all in our area. It’s also very humbling to be surrounded by such a talented group of individuals within our company that are working tirelessly to build something that we all can be proud of. What’s Canton’s best-kept secret? Well, I would have to say that Canton’s best kept secret is the history and architecture of our downtown area. We are so fortunate to not only be the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which we are obviously building an entire village around, but to be the home of the McKinley monument.

What goals did you have when you opened your cafe? I knew I wanted to sell only healthy food. Diet is tied to mental health — to have a healthy mind, you need a healthy body. I also wanted to create a place where people could come and feel a little better about themselves.
Are there any specific ways you’re hoping to achieve that? The name of every single item on our menu has an affirmation embedded in it. If you want the chicken panini, you have to order the I Am Strong Chicken Panini. Or you place an order for the I Am Great Cherry Mango Smoothie. You have to say something positive about yourself to place your order.
Was there a reason you chose Massillon as the site of your cafe? I’m from Massillon. It’s my home. The people I love are here. They and so many other folks in Massillon have all contributed to my life in so many ways, and I wanted to make a contribution back to the community.

Inspired Creativity abounds in Canton. By Mark Oprea
From its trompe l’oeil still lifes to NFL-inspired folk pieces to American watercolors, it’s likely that the Canton Museum of Art (CMA) will have something on display for any taste. Founded in 1935 on the second floor of the Canton Public Library, the museum blossomed into an American Alliance of Museums-accredited artistic mecca in the late sixties and seventies. “One of the great things (about CMA) is that we’re everything,” says Christy Davis, curator of exhibitions at CMA. “We’re not just one style, movement or medium.” Today, CMA has over 1,500 works in its permanent collection, along with rotating exhibitions such as Marvel-themed and pop surrealist works by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
