n behalf of our artists, staff and Board of Trustees, welcome to Great Lakes Theater’s 54th season! Our mission — to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience — guides our mainstage productions, as well as our educational programming. We believe theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, and provide our student audiences with a glimpse of a broader world. A wellspring of learning is made possible through the arts.
Following the sensational response to our season, which featured The Secret Garden, King Lear, A Christmas Carol, Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None and Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost, we are delighted to be back onstage at the Hanna Theatre for our final offering this season — The Fantasticks, written by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones. We are pleased to welcome back resident director Victoria Bussert to helm the world’s longest-running musical. Ms. Bussert has created an extraordinary body of work with Great Lakes Theater, including The Secret Garden earlier this year and last season’s record-breaking, re-imagining of Les Misérables. We look forward to a fresh and inventive staging of The Fantasticks for an evening that is sure to delight audiences of all ages. We offer our deep gratitude to The Kulas Foundation for their support of our 2015-16 Musical Theater Series offerings of The Fantasticks and The Secret Garden, and the decades of support they have given to Great Lakes Theater. Since the company’s inception in 1962, programming has been rooted in Shakespeare, but Great Lakes’ commitment to great plays spans the breadth of all cultures, forms of theater and time periods –– including the 20th century –– and provides for the occasional mounting of new works that complement the classical repertoire. theater is magnified in the educational programs that surround its productions. Since its inception, GLT has had a strong presence in area schools, bringing students to the theater for matinee performances and sending specially trained actor-teachers to the schools for weeklong residencies developed to explore classic drama from a theatrical point of view. GLT is equally dedicated to enhancing the theater experience for adult audiences through Surround, a series of community programs that explore the themes of a main stage production. To this end, Great Lakes Theater regularly serves as the catalyst for community events and programs in the arts and humanities that illuminate the plays on its stage. Great Lakes Theater is one of only a handful of American theaters that have stayed the course as a classic theater. As Great Lakes moves into a new era with a permanent home in the Hanna Theatre, the company reaffirms its belief in the power of partnership, its determination to make this community a better place in which to live, and its commitment to ensure the legacy of classic theater in Cleveland.

We salute the tenure of outgoing board president Sam Hartwell (photo, left). In his three years as president he has overseen the establishment of the Legacy Society, the creation of a Strategic Alliance Joint Task Force with our partner theaters, and has welcomed our entire company to his home each year for GLT’s season kickoff party. (Thanks, Sam!) Sam will remain an active member of the board. He will be succeeded by Tim Downing (photo, right), who has been in leadership positions on the Great Lakes Theater board for more than 11 years.

We’ll be “galumphing” to elementary schools in 2017 with a “frabjous” new touring production that is designed to impart important social lessons and provide a memorable theatrical experience for students. In our new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s The Jabberwocky, two bullied students band together and escape to the Tulgey Wood where they meet a colorful collection of characters. Along the way, the duo defeats the Jabberwocky and applies the lessons learned to face their fears back home. Visit our website to learn more about how to bring this production to a school near you!
We applaud Kelly Schaffer Florian, Director of Educa tional Services, for being selected as a recipient of the 2016 Milestones Community Innovator Award. This award honors the tremendous efforts that she and the GLT Education Department have made to provide services and support for individuals with disabilities — especially patrons affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. Since 2013, Great Lakes Theater has offered annual Sensory Friendly performances of A Christmas Carol. ABOUT THE PLAY Try to remember ...

y first memory of The Fantasticks was as a 13-year-old student in Munster, Indiana, preparing to audition for the role of Louisa in the junior high school musical. I practiced “Much More” over and over again, choreographed every move I would make, assembled the perfect audition outfit — and didn’t get cast. Instead, I became the assistant director of the production, and so began my personal dance with this beautiful show. I’ve directed The Fantasticks five times in my career, and each time I seem to see it from a new life perspective. (Maturity will do that to you.) Seven years following my unsuccessful audition, I found myself directing a community theater production with my mother playing one of the fathers. (We were short on adult men.) At that time, I remember relating most strongly to the character of Matt. I knew I had to get out of my little hometown and held the deep belief that, “Beyond that road lies a shining world.” Shortly after that, I moved my life to New York and predictably found “a couple of surprises there.” Over the years, I’ve certainly had my share of El Gallo moments of heartbreak, learning the painful but important lesson of choosing real love over romanticized infatuation. My work as a teacher has exposed me to the many lessons taught by the fathers, Hucklebee and Bellomy — perhaps most especially, “Make sure you never say NO.”
When I first wrote this director’s note in March 2015, the announcement has just been made that after 55 years (with a four-year hiatus from 2002–2006), the final curtain was about to fall on what has become the world’s longest-running musical ever. What makes this even more spectacular is the fact that The Fantasticks has only played off-Broadway. Yet, it has been no less a New York institution than any of the biggest hits on the Great White Way. The day before what would have been the final performance two anonymous fans of the show stepped forward and offered the financial resources needed to keep the show running. On February 8, 2016, The Fantasticks reached an unsurpassed 21,000 performances and continues to delight audiences to this day. In his opening-night review, The New York Times’ Brooks Atkinson suggested that the show was “the sort of thing that loses magic the longer it endures.” The past 55 years has certainly proved that judgment wrong. It is with great joy that we present our very own production of The Fantasticks tonight. Like any great classic no matter our own age, the tale will remain ageless. Victoria Bussert balances the professional and academic worlds, dividing her time between an active career as an award-winning freelance director while holding the position of director of music theater for Baldwin Wallace University. Nationally, her work has been seen at Manhattan Theatre Club, York Theatre, New World Stages, Goodspeed Opera, Playhouse Square, Portland Stage, Dallas Theatre Center, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Pegasus Players, Anchorage Opera, Dobama Theatre, Cleveland Play House and Beck Center for the Arts, among others. Her international credits include Friar Tuck in Russia, The Who’s Tommy in Brazil, the Danish premiere of Avenue Q (2012 Reumert Award nomination) and the European premieres of [title of show] and Lizzie for the Fredericia Teater in Denmark. Prior to her teaching career, Victoria served as associate director for Great Lakes Theater and continues her long association with that company as resident director, most recently directing the award-winning The Secret Garden. Gregory Daniels Choreographer Four seasons at Great Lakes Theater Gregory is thrilled to return to GLT after choreographing The Secret Garden, Les Misérables, Cabaret and Sondheim On Sondheim. Credits include the regional premieres of In The Heights, Dogfight, Carrie: The Musical and Spring Awakening (2012 and 2014 Cleveland Critics Circle award for Best Choreography), all at Beck Center. He is currently the music supervisor for the acclaimed corporate entertainment group, The Water Coolers, and has performed for clients including AT&T, Adobe, Citibank, La Quinta, Pitney Bowes and Dunkin Brands. For two years, Matthew created the sound design for ISF’s, Shakespearience, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest, and their productions of Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing. A native Clevelander, David is thrilled to be returning to GLT and The Hanna Theatre — where he experienced his first Broadway
road show. Over the last three decades, he was the sound mixer for numerous Broadway productions: A Chorus Line (1981), Dreamgirls (1983), Sweet Charity (1986), Cabaret (1988), Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (1989), Crazy For You (1991), Passion (1994), Fosse (1998), The Producers (2000), Gypsy (2007), The Addams Family (2009) and the 2014 Best Musical: A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. In 2006, David designed the sound for the Tony Award-winning Jay Johnson - The Two and Only and the off-Broadway hit The Musical of Musicals. In 1975, he designed El Grande de Coca Cola at The State Theatre as part of the rejuvenation of Playhouse Square. He has worked as a concert sound engineer for Tommy Tune, Mandy Patinkin and Patti LuPone; and for special events at The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and NY City Center Encores series. Before heading to New York City, he was a member of the Cleveland Play House Youth Theatre and production manager at The Fairmount Center in Novelty, Ohio. Currently, David is teaching at Carnegie Mellon University and designing in Pittsburgh, Idaho and Lake Tahoe. Esther M. Haberlen Costume Design Twelve seasons with Great Lakes Theater Previously for GLT: Much Ado About Nothing and Les Misérables at the Hanna Theater; The Secret Adversary, The Great Globe Itself, Seven Ages, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Double Heart and On the Dark Side of Twilight on stages around northeast Ohio through the GLT Surround Program. He received a CableACE Award for his art direction of the Showtime network film Mastergate. His set designs for Anne of Green Gables at Childsplay and Hamlet at ISF were selected for the USA Design Exhibit at the 1999 and 2003 Prague Quadrennial Stage Design Exposition. He is a member of USA Local 829, and received a MFA from Southern Methodist University.

Tom Jones Book and Lyrics Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt wrote The Fantasticks for a summer theater at Barnard College. After its off-Broadway opening in May 1960, it went on to become the longest-running production in the history of the American stage and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the world. It is currently running in a successful revival in New York. Their first Broadway show, 110 In The Shade, was successfully revived a few years ago by the New York City Opera and is sched-
uled for a new Broadway production this April, produced by the Roundabout Theatre, starring Audra MacDonald. I Do! I Do!, their two-character musical starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston, was a success on Broadway and is frequently done around the country and the world. (One production, in Minneapolis, played for 22 continuous years with the same two actors in the leading roles.) For several years, Jones and Schmidt worked privately at their theater workshop, concentrating on small-scale musicals in new and often untried forms. The most notable of these efforts were Celebration, which moved to Broadway, and Philemon, which won an Outer Critics Circle Award. They contributed incidental music and lyrics to the off-Broadway play Colette, starring Zoe Caldwell, then did a full-scale musical version under the title Colette Collage. In 1998, The Show Goes On, a musical revue featuring their theater songs and starring Jones and Schmidt, was presented at the York Theatre, and Mirette, their musical based on the award-winning children’s book, premiered at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. In addition to an Obie Award and the 1992 Special Tony Award for The Fantasticks, in 1999, their “stars” were added to the off-Broadway Walk of Fame outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre. STRATEGIC ALLIANCE In 2002, Great Lakes Theater (Cleveland, Ohio) and Idaho Shakespeare Festival (Boise, Idaho) conceived a unique, strategic producing alliance designed to maximize return on organizational investments, increase production efficiencies, create long term work opportunities for artists and share best practices. In 2010, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival (Incline Village, Nevada) joined the collaborative — further contributing to the momentum of the revolutionary producing prototype's success. The long term results have been remarkable. The alliance's three independent, 501c3 regional theaters have shared 50 jointly-created productions — each featuring long term, multi-city employment opportunities for artistic company members. This revolutionary producing model has realized its vision and exceeded expectations while simultaneously resulting in notable audience growth for each company.
