WELCOME Dear Friends,

at Playhouse Square

O

n behalf of our artists, staff and Board of Trustees, welcome to Great Lakes Theater’s 54th season! Our mission — to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience — guides our mainstage productions, as well as our educational programming. We believe theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, and provide our student audiences with a glimpse of a broader world. A wellspring of learning is made possible through the arts. Following the sensational response to the first half of our season — which featured The Secret Garden, King Lear and A Christmas Carol — we are delighted to be back onstage at the Hanna Theatre this spring with an expanded season of three great classics: Agatha Christie’s masterpiece, And Then There Were None, followed by Shakespeare’s early comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost, and finally in May, one of the greatest off-Broadway musicals of all time, The Fantasticks, written by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones. We are particularly excited to continue our work on Dame Agatha Christie’s plays this season with her most successful mystery of all time, and thrilled to direct the recently restored, original ending of the story which was made available by Ms. Christie’s grandson, Mathew Prichard, for the first time in September 2015. I am pleased to welcome Tyne Rafaeli to the artistic family of Great Lakes this season to direct Love’s Labour’s Lost. Tyne comes to Great Lakes with a deep background in Shakespeare both as an actor and director. Her most recent work includes Shakespeare’s Othello for the Classic Stage Company in New York, as well as directing the first national tour of The Bridges of Madison County this winter. For the past two seasons, she has been Bartlett Sher’s assistant on Broadway and across the globe. For our extended season this year, we welcome back resident director Victoria Bussert to direct the world’s longest-running musical, The Fantasticks. Ms. Bussert has created an extraordinary body of work with Great Lakes, including The Secret Garden earlier this year and last season’s record- breaking, re-imagining of Les Misèrables. We look forward to a fresh and inventive staging of this classic in an evening that is appropriate for all ages. As you read through your program and look around the theater tonight, you will see the names of many friends, partners, corporations and foundations whose support makes all of this possible. We hope you will consider using the enclosed brochure to join them and the Great Lakes Theater family as a member, supporting the work we create on the Parker Hannifin Stage at the Hanna Theatre. We extend our special appreciation to the Lubrizol Corporation for their support and sponsorship of And Then There Were None. We extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of our supporters, with special thanks to our partners of over 30 years at Playhouse Square, and the tireless efforts of our extraordinary artists, talented administrative staff, dedicated trustees and the tremendous generosity of this community! I hope to see you in our audience again soon.

ABOUT GREAT LAKES THEATER

Great Lakes Theater’s fall 2015 production of The Secret Garden (Photo by Roger Mastroianni) he mission of Great Lakes Theater, through its main stage productions and its education programs, is to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience. Since the company’s inception in 1962, programming has been rooted in Shakespeare, but Great Lakes’ commitment to great plays spans the breadth of all cultures, forms of theater and time periods –– including the 20th century –– and provides for the occasional mounting of new works that complement the classical repertoire. Classic theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, revel in eloquent language, preserve the traditions of diverse cultures and generate communal spirit. On its main stage and through its education programs, GLT seeks to create visceral, immediate experiences for participants, asserting theater’s historic role as a vehicle for advancing the common good and helping people make the joyful and meaningful connections between classic plays and their own lives. The company’s commitment to classic

theater is magnified in the educational programs that surround its productions. Since its inception, GLT has had a strong presence in area schools, bringing students to the theater for matinee performances and sending specially trained actor-teachers to the schools for weeklong residencies developed to explore classic drama from a theatrical point of view. GLT is equally dedicated to enhancing the theater experience for adult audiences through Surround, a series of community programs that explore the themes of a main stage production. To this end, Great Lakes Theater regularly serves as the catalyst for community events and programs in the arts and humanities that illuminate the plays on its stage. Great Lakes Theater is one of only a handful of American theaters that have stayed the course as a classic theater. As Great Lakes moves into a new era with a permanent home in the Hanna Theatre, the company reaffirms its belief in the power of partnership, its determination to make this community a better place in which to live, and its commitment to ensure the legacy of classic theater in Cleveland.

NEWS & NOTES Salon Spectacular

at Playhouse Square

If you were an admirer of its temporary chain-hung fluorescent lighting fixtures, plywood-patched and pockmarked interior or that “charming” industrial fuse box which hung on its west wall … then you’re going to be disappointed. But if you’re a fan of re-imaging classic spaces for contemporary audiences, then the new “Hanna Salon: A gift of The John Sherwin Family” is sure to WOW! Thanks to a generous legacy gift from The Sherwick Foundation, with additional support from Playhouse Square, the Salon (which was originally a Lounge in 1921 where men and women could smoke … together!) has been restored to glory – minus the ashtrays, of course.

On February 6, friends of Great Lakes Theater (GLT) celebrated our annual gala at the Hanna Theatre. The evening featured performances by a cast, comprised of GLT mainstage artists and Baldwin Wallace University students, performing Broadway hits (directed by Victoria Bussert and Gregory Daniels) and announ cing our new 20162017 season. Guests enjoyed a gourmet meal catered by Chef Bob Sferra of Culinary Occasions, bid on unique auction items and even delighted in the reading of a special sonnet written in honor of GLT by John Schubert. The event was co-chaired by GLT trustees Carol Dolan and Tim Downing.

This riveting, suspenseful, and topical play from Pulitzer Prize finalist Rebecca Gilman plunges us headfirst into the turbulent waters of parenthood, faith and love.

The blink of an eye. A matter of seconds. Your whole world changes. For Michael, it happened when his daughter Theresa went missing. For Theresa, it was when she was found. Cleveland native Rajiv Joseph makes his CPH premiere with this story of a family’s desperate and determined attempt to heal each other and rebuild their world. ABOUT THE PLAY/PRODUCTION

at Playhouse Square

I

began researching this season’s production of And Then There Were None by reading Agatha Christie’s 1939 novel as background for the play which she wrote based on her original work. As always, the novelist must give over to the playwright the right to adapt, alter and restructure the narrative form of the story for the dramatic necessities of the theater. Most interesting was the decision Ms. Christie made — with encouragement from her producers — to change the ending of the play. The producers felt the original ending was too “dark” for a London audience in the midst of World War II and asked for a more hopeful ending focused on the romantic relationship between the characters of Vera Claythorne and Philip Lombard. Ms. Christie ultimately agreed, and the play opened in 1943 to great acclaim. Further research turned up two recent productions in Britain featuring newly written endings purported to restore the original ending of the story. However, there was no way to get the rights or even a copy of these altered endings. Both were written with the express permission of the Christie estate but without the ability to license the endings to other companies. Then, as luck would have it, the grandson of Ms. Christie, Mathew Prichard, commissioned an alternate ending which presents the original events from the novel and granted the use of either to future producers. To add a bit of mystery, this “new” ending, now called the 1939 Ending, is given no authorial credit, leaving us to muse over the question of who wrote it. We have chosen the 1939 Ending for our production as it seems to reflect Ms. Christie’s original intention. Charles Fee, Director And Then There Were None

12

A note from Agatha Christie’s grandson on the topic... My grandmother’s play has been performed successfully all over the world since its premiere in 1943 with an ending which is unique to the play and is not that of the novel on which it is based. There is much evidence that this was not her initial intention but was instead the result of what was perceived to be the needs of audiences at a very dark time in history. My grandmother never shied from taking notice of others’ input, and the success then and since of the play vindicates her approach and their views. In recent years enterprising producers presenting to, perhaps, more inquiring audiences have experimented with incorporating the novel’s ending in the play. This, too, has been well received, leading to a controversy as to which is the “real” ending. I have no intention of settling this controversy. Instead, on the 125th anniversary of my grandmother’s birth, I wish to make the choice available to all producers and directors to express their view as to the writer’s intention by enabling them to choose from the 1943 (play) ending and the 1939 (novel) ending. Drawing on papers and correspondence at the time of production and on archive material, I have commissioned a dramatic version of the novel’s close. Both dramatic endings begin their unraveling with Lombard’s line to Vera: “You – young, lovely, and quite, quite mad.” After that, readers, producers and directors face the same choice that my grandmother faced. STRATEGIC ALLIANCE In 2002, Great Lakes Theater (Cleveland, Ohio) and Idaho Shakespeare Festival (Boise, Idaho) conceived a unique, strategic producing alliance designed to maximize return on organizational investments, increase production efficiencies, create long term work opportunities for artists and share best practices. In 2010, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival (Incline Village, Nevada) joined the collaborative — further contributing to the momentum of the revolutionary producing prototype's success. The long term results have been remarkable. The alliance's three independent, 501c3 regional theaters have shared 50 jointly-created productions — each featuring long term, multi-city employment opportunities for artistic company members. This revolutionary producing model has realized its vision and exceeded expectations while simultaneously resulting in notable audience growth for each company.
