A CAREER COLLEGE EDUCATION can make a powerful difference in your life

Message from the CEO

hen it comes to post-secondary education, students in Canada have tremendous choice and that is something of which we should all be proud. With an incredible wealth of program options, today’s students have the opportunity to choose their futures and paths like never before. There are clear reasons why individuals choose a regulated career college. Our colleges are uniquely positioned to be flexible for the modern student who is balancing many things in life – from schedules to start dates to locations. The instructors in our schools are often experts who still work in their fields and we have partnerships with industry that help ensure graduates find employment upon completion of their programs. We’re proud of what many of our member colleges achieve for their students every year. They work hard to provide high quality education with regulated standards, innovative methods, smaller class sizes and more hands-on training. However, nobody tells the story better than our students. In this year’s edition of Career Connections, we’re delighted to highlight recent graduates and instructors from across

the country. You will read, in their words, about how education at a career college has made a powerful difference in their lives. You will also read about where they are working and what motivates them. In addition, we also tapped some experts to give tips on choosing both a career and a college, offering up some great resources for you to use. On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, I want to thank everyone who has contributed their time and efforts to Career Connections 2016, especially our advertisers who continue to support us. This year marks the 120th Anniversary of the National Association of Career Colleges. Regulated career colleges have played an important role in Canada for well over a century and we look forward to continuing to be a valuable choice for students, like you, for many more years to come. Enjoy the magazine and all the best with your future pursuits.

JOB-READY Conference Board of Canada acknowledges the important role in providing skills training

R

egulated Career Colleges (RCCs) across the country award tens of thousands of certificates and diplomas each year in fields such as business, trades, health care, information technology, applied arts and design, transportation, personal services and law enforcement – and those are just a few of the many programs available. The vital role played by these colleges was recognized in a recent Conference Board of Canada Report. It describes the value of regulated career colleges in Canada’s post-secondary education

system, particularly in providing practical training for learners who want skills that they can take from the classroom straight to the workplace. “As the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC), we represent over 1300 regulated career colleges across the country who train 175,000 student every year. Our students are choosing career colleges because they want to receive practical skills training, in a timely manner, to pursue a new or better career and ultimately be successful,” says Serge Buy, CEO of the NACC. “This year’s Conference Board

Report is an important endorsement of the role we play in Canada’s post-secondary education system and we are pleased to see RCCs presented nationally as an important and valued option for students to choose.” As the Conference Board report attests, RCCs are a practical, alternative training option for students who seek to gain new skills, upskill to meet the demands of their current discipline or job, or retrain for a new career. territories, RCCs provide options for many students who do not wish to travel far from home. One of the key reasons RCCs play a significant role in Canada’s postsecondary education system is due to the convenience and flexibility they offer to students, coupled with career colleges’ ability to train learners in a condensed period of time. The Conference Board report verifies that most students make the choice to attend an RCC to prepare for a particular occupation. In addition, most

Our flexibility makes us extremely responsive to the needs of the working world. Last year, 98% of our graduates were working within 6 months of graduation, with 87% in their chosen field.” Lois McNestry, president of Discovery College

career college graduates find employment after obtaining their credential, and postgraduation earnings are in line with those of their public college counterparts. Not to be overlooked is the fact that employers also benefit from the RCC sector, which gives them access to a well-trained talent pool that meets some of their labour needs. Lois McNestry, president of BC’s Discovery College, agrees that colleges like hers are uniquely positioned to serve the needs of a wide range of career-focused students. “We have a number of campuses throughout BC and the student demographic changes from area to area,” she explains. “Some are young adults just graduating from high school, some are returning to the workforce after raising children, some seek to upgrade skill and some are new single mothers who have to support their families. Many of these

great reasons to choose a Career College

1 They offer flexible, innovative,

often specialized, shorter duration programs which means you transition into your chosen career more quickly.

2 With nearly 1300 regulated

career colleges across the country in 10 provinces and 2 territories, you won’t likely have to travel a great distance to attend the program of your choice.

3 Career colleges have a great

selection of career-focused programs including some of the most in-demand skills from which to choose.

4 Start dates are variable. Unlike students value the opportunity to go to school close to home. One of the things we offer students in programs with academic prerequisites is the opportunity to attend workshops and write their grade 12 equivalency.” Like many career colleges, Discovery College has diversified from its roots in healthcare and business training, adding programs according to what’s needed in the workforce, Lois explains. “In some cases we are offering training for jobs that didn’t exist 10 or 15 years ago. In other cases, we develop new programs, like our police foundations, to meet the growing demand for security personnel which we recognized thanks to our established connections with forces eager to hire trained students. Similarly, our international trade and freight forwarding programs are extremely popular with students and employers alike.” She adds that some students attend to upgrade their skills through selective courses such as finance or accounting, rather than participating in

a full program. “Our flexibility makes us extremely responsive to the needs of the working world and we regularly confirm this connection, as part of our accreditation, by polling our graduates. Last year, 98% of them were working within 6 months of graduation, with 87% in their chosen field.” Lois is emphatic about the important role career colleges play in the postsecondary education landscape in Canada. “I would say with passion that if you were to assess graduates coming out of high school, you’d find that not all students mature at the same time. For some of these students, university or community college may not be the right fit; for others, they may not have any idea yet what career path interests them. I believe everyone has potential and I have a real concern for the kids who need a different kind of opportunity. That’s why all our programs offer a practical component so students come out truly understanding the jobs for which

some programs which only commence in September, many career colleges have year-round start dates so you can choose the timing that works for you.

5 They serve a wide age range

of students. Whether you’re just about to graduate from high school or seeking retraining after years at home or in the workforce, you’ll fit in just fine.

6 Career colleges offer better

student-teacher ratios. You’ll benefit from smaller class sizes and more personalized instruction due to lower annual enrollments and continuous intake dates.

they are trained and they’ve had a chance to confirm that it’s the career they want to pursue.” She notes that her college’s motto speaks to the mission statement of most RCCs. “Discovery College is committed to hands-on training and to graduating work-ready students who are sought after by employers.” As an example, Lois explains that their Heath Care Assistant (Personal Support Worker) program is colocated in several campuses with private care facilities so the program serves almost like a twelve month long, hands-on job interview, with many students going on to be hired by those same facilities. Lois’ passion as an educator is reflective of the unique experience offered at Canada’s career colleges. “I love the diversity of our students and the opportunity to work with adult learners is incredible,” she says. “It’s so important to them to come to school and have the opportunity for a rewarding career. Seeing them at graduation, and afterwards when they are working, has me walking on the moon sometimes.” While career colleges are clearly a valued post-secondary option and highly regarded for upgrading skills, Lois notes that RCCs also serve as a terrific gateway option. “Some of our healthcare students end up pursuing further education to obtain their Bachelor of Nursing or become Registered Nurses; similarly we find some of our business program graduates going on to obtain their Bachelor of Commerce.” As employers increasingly focus on hiring well-trained employees, Canadian career colleges are being recognized as filling an important niche. In addition to flexible training options to fit students’ schedules, they offer a specialized, focused approach, are highly adaptable and therefore able to respond to changing job markets. As the Conference Board of Canada confirms, Career College students offer the practical education needed to secure meaningful, rewarding careers and serve as a valued pipeline for employers seeking skilled workers. “We are pleased to see an increased understanding of and appreciation for the work being done by our many fine career colleges across the country,” adds Serge. “In many ways, we’re filling a gap in the post-secondary system by delivering flexible, hands-on training that helps students find jobs for which employers are hiring. We look forward to working collaboratively with other institutions, ensuring that Canada’s labour market has a consistent supply of well-trained, skilled workers.”

Career college a fast-track to better employment prospects Student Quentrel Provo finds a new path thanks to Maritime Business College’s Paralegal Program I really felt like the faculty cared about me and wanted to see me succeed as much as I did! Quentrel Provo

[ 14 ] www.nacc.ca

For many students, their path to a career college begins with the desire to supplement previous education in order to further their employment prospects. Such was the case for Quentrel Provo, who, despite having completed three years of University, recognized there was much to be gained by attending Maritime Business College. “I am the oldest of eight children in a tight-knit family and I grew up on the eastern edge of the Halifax Regional Municipality,” says Quentrel. “School was very important to us and wanting me to have a well-rounded education, my parents enrolled me in a French Immersion program

for grades 7 through 12, believing it would give me better opportunities in life.” After high school, he embarked on a Youth Ministry program at Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto, then transferred to Crandall University, closer to home in Moncton, where he switched to Psychology. “After three years of University I realized that to get a job in my field I would likely have to complete both a masters and a doctorate degree to get to where I wanted to go.” Rather than return to school immediately, Quentrel secured a position as a Records Clerk at Veterans Affairs Canada.

Quentrel Provo. Photo by Richard Donovan “I enjoyed this job very much, particularly as it paid well and the working hours were great. The only thing I didn’t like was that it was a term or contract position. I wanted something more stable than that so I decided that I needed to go back to school to achieve that.” Despite experiencing some health problems, Quentrel was determined not to let any obstacles stop him from reaching his goal of a secure, successful career. He opted to leave his position at Veterans Affairs to further his education by attending a career college. “Instead of returning to University when I was ready to resume my studies, I chose Maritime Business College because a career college program fast-tracks you to get the qualifications you need to get working in the field of your choice. Also, I liked that the classes would be much smaller and I would easily be able to get one-on-one time with my teachers if needed.” Quentrel chose Maritime Business College’s Paralegal Program as he wanted to learn more about law. “This was particularly important to me as I had recently founded an initiative about which I was very passionate. After my cousin, with whom I was very close, was killed in Halifax, I launched the Stop the Violence Spread the Love movement. I realized as I worked on this project that becoming more knowledgeable about the law and the justice system would make me more effective when doing Stop the Violence speeches and presentations.” He is particularly enthusiastic when describing his experience as a student. “I had to work hard and study hard to succeed but the whole time I attended Maritime Business College, I found all the instructors and my peers to be very supportive and helpful. I really felt like the faculty cared about me and wanted to see me suc-

ceed as much as I did!” After graduation, Quentrel enjoyed a term position working as a Records Clerk at the Crown Attorney’s Office in the Dartmouth Court House. “I quickly gained more confidence after graduating when I realized I had gained the knowledge and skills to perform well in the job I wanted to do. I really liked working in the Crown Attorney’s Office and felt that what I had learned in the Paralegal program gave me some of the key tools I needed to do my job well. In addition, having completed the Paralegal Program made me feel great about myself for achieving one of my goals in life.” He’s not ready to stop here, however. While his Stop the Violence Spread the Love project requires full-time effort, he’s also working again at Veterans Affairs Canada as an Analyst in their National Contact Centre Network. Quentrel says he eventually plans to return to University, this time to study Law. “I can already tell, thanks to my time working in the Crown Attorney’s Office, that completing the Paralegal Program has definitely given me a solid foundation which I believe will help me get to Law School one day.” What advice would Quentrel offer to someone contemplating a career college program? “I would tell them that if you’re looking for small classes, great faculty and a great atmosphere with a diverse mix of people from all different walks of life, then a career college is the place is for you!” He is quick to express his gratitude to everyone at Maritime Business College who supported him during his time there. “My family and friends are so very proud of me and where my life is at this point. It took determination, faith and hard work to get where I am today but I feel quite honestly like I’m in a great place in life and wouldn’t change it for the world.” Career Connections 2016/17 [ 15 ]

A challenging road to success Herzing College grad Afsana Nodrat overcame many obstacles to reach her goals Afsana Nodrat, a graduate of the Community Support Worker program at Herzing College in Winnipeg, overcame incredible obstacles to succeed in her chosen field. “I grew up in Afghanistan; my education ended during Grade 9 because my school got bombed in the war and there was nowhere else for me to attend,” explains Afsana. “A few months later I got married and I was not permitted by my husband and his family to attend school any more. Soon, I had a son and then we went to Pakistan as refugees. My daughter was born there and shortly afterwards we emigrated to Canada.” Once living in Winnipeg, Afsana [ 16 ] www.nacc.ca

struggled to learn English from television and from her children. While she was interested in pursuing schooling and eventually getting a job, when she tried to attend ESL classes and care for her family, she found it too difficult to continue. Along the way, she had two more children. “After more than ten years in Canada, I was able to convince my then-husband to let me finish high school on a parttime basis through adult education. He didn’t think I would be able to manage things at home and school but I was very determined and was proud to graduate in 2008.” Eventually, the difficulties Afsana had

The program at Herzing was perfect for me because they offer flexible course times and a very supportive environment so I could fit classes in around the needs of my family. been experiencing in her marriage forced some decisive action. It was not a cultural issue; rather, the domestic abuse Afsana had endured for years finally became unbearable. She fled with her children to a shelter and then spent more than two and half years navigating the social services system, with a great deal of compassionate support along the way. Afsana says she was motivated to continue her education after her ex-husband taunted her with the idea that she would never be able to care for and support her children because she had no skills, no education and no work experience. “I was not going to let that happen,” she says. “I took his negative comments as a challenge and enrolled in Herzing College’s Community Support Worker program. “The program at Herzing was perfect for me because they offer flexible course times and a very supportive environment so I could fit classes in around the needs of my family. I chose this particular program because I knew I really wanted to do front-line work in the community to help make a difference in people’s lives just like the many people who helped me as I began to shape a new life for my children and myself.” “I found the program challenging in a

really good way. I had to continue to work on improving my English and also had to learn about the history of community support in Canada as well as what’s available to people today. At the time, I wasn’t sure how classes like psychology and sociology were relevant, but now, of course, these are things I use in my work every single day.” Since completing her studies through Herzing, Afsana has found not one but two jobs in her field. An internship led to a half-time position with Sara Riel Inc. at the Seneca Respite Service program for adults with mental health issues; she’s also working full-time for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Manitoba and Winnipeg Region, as a peer outreach worker in their Community Housing with Supports (Housing First) program. She’s held up to four jobs at a time but has cut back to just two as she’s now enrolled in the University of Manitoba’s Bachelor of Social Work program. “Because I was unable to go to school or work for such a long time, I felt like I was hibernating. I want to make up for that. I have sometimes had four jobs at a time.” One of the things of which Afsana is most proud is demonstrating to her children the value of hard work and education. “They are almost all grown up now but have been so encouraging of and helpful with my studies. My journey has led them to value their education and the oldest are attending university now. We shared the same experiences and they too want to work in careers that help people.” Afsana is quick to point out that despite having completed her studies at Herzing, she still enjoys continued support from people at the college. “I visit often and it always feels like coming home. They helped me assemble my portfolio and built my confidence, which led to jobs that I absolutely love. I am very fortunate that my education at Herzing has made it possible for me to be employed by two major mental health organizations in our province.”

Third time’s the charm for student at Saskatoon Business College Highly motivated accounting student Amy Jensen has eyes focused on her future The instructors are really helpful; if you are struggling, you can almost always see them after class that very day. As long as you are willing to work hard, they are willing to help. Amy Jensen

[ 18 ] www.nacc.ca

Although Amy Jensen has a passion for the culinary arts, she’s a pragmatist at heart. While she originally explored various pathways related to cooking, ultimately it was the promise of a secure future that led her to a career college “I was raised by a single mother who worked as many as eight part time jobs at once just to provide for us,” recalls Amy. “She definitely instilled good work habits in me and certainly made me appreciate the importance of getting a good education so I would have better career prospects.” Amy worked part time throughout high school in various food service jobs. A strong student academically, she also competed in the baking category of Saskatchewan’s provincial Skills Competition. “After

high school I enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Education; my plan was to become a Home Economics teacher,” says Amy. “I realized about a year and a half into my program that it was going to be hard to build a career in this field because so many schools were discontinuing their Home Ec programs.” Amy switched gears and enrolled at the prestigious Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver, where she completed her Baking and Pastry Arts Diploma, serving as the valedictorian for her graduating class. “I loved the program and was excited about working in this field, but I didn’t anticipate the low starting salary which was barely over minimum wage, not to mention the gruelling hours.” She put her baking dreams aside and

A new career. A better life.

Amy Jenson worked through a series of increasingly more lucrative customer service jobs. “I worked my way up to becoming the assistant manager of a greenhouse and while helping out in the office, I discovered a fondness for doing database work and making things balance. Someone suggested I should become an accountant and the seed became firmly planted.” “I kept looking at job postings on websites and so many included being a graduate of a recognized business college among the requirements so I started checking out various schools. I also asked friends who had attended Saskatoon Business College (SBC) about their experience and they highly recommended it. When I checked out the various programs on offer, accounting stood out to me because no matter what happens to the economy, people will always need accountants.” As Amy nears the completion of her ten month accounting program, she’s enthusiastic about her career college experience. “I loved that they have intakes every three months and that the program is so condensed, plus we get a lot of great hands-on time in the computer lab. The instructors are really helpful; if you are struggling, you can almost always see them after class that very day. As long as you are willing to work hard, they are willing to help.” While she admits the program has been challenging, Amy is grateful for a strong background in math as well as supportive classmates who help each other. “Another huge bonus is that there are just nine people in my class because the March

intake is not as popular so our group has become very tightly knit. And I love how the owner of SBC works to help graduates find jobs.” As for her own plans after graduating, Amy says she would love to work for an organization which recognizes that she is a newly graduated student who doesn’t yet know everything and is eager for more onthe-job training. “I hope there is room for advancement because I would love to find a place to plant my feet and grow with the company. I’m really open to any sector as long as the company is a great fit.” Her career college program will qualify Amy to work as an accounting clerk, and she’s got her eyes set on a bright future. “Once I’ve worked for eight years I will be able to challenge the examinations to get my designation as a Chartered Accountant (CA), now that they have streamlined the accounting designations in Canada. I’m not sure yet if I want to pursue getting my CA, but I love that I will have the option if I want it.” Amy’s advice to someone contemplating attending a career college is very direct. “I would simply say to them, ‘Why are you waiting?’ I believe that getting more education is a choice that no one ever regrets. Attending a career college means there will be so many more potential opportunities out there for you. I’m so pleased I made this choice and grateful for the support of my family and friends. They’re the ones who’ve said to me ‘third time’s the charm” and they’re right!”

Instructors with practical experience make career college programs more worthwhile Entertainment professionals like instructor Dominique Blais impart valuable information to students Ours is a very practical program – we teach students how they can make a living from their craft and how to handle the hundreds of decisions that have to be made every day.

Dominique Blais

[ 20 ] www.nacc.ca

One of the primary reasons students choose a career college program is because of the calibre of the instructors. Trebas Institute, with campuses in Montreal and Toronto, is no exception. With a full complement of instructors who are established professionals in the entertainment industry, students gain all the knowledge needed to launch rewarding careers in many diverse fields across the entertainment spectrum Dominique Blais, the director of Trebas’ Music Business Administration Program and Show and Event Management Program, brings more than thirty years of experience to his role as an educator. A professional musician, he has participated in recording projects across North America, produced and promoted highly

acclaimed albums and organized events and tours for a wide range of artists. He is also a copyright management specialist. Always active in the arts, Dominique divides his time between business consulting and, since 2003, teaching at Trebas Institute. As Dominique explains, Trebas was founded almost forty years ago to supply the music and entertainment industries with skilled, adaptable studio recording professionals, event planners and event/ venue managers. In addition to some becoming successful artists themselves, graduates from Trebas now work for major entertainment companies, studios and preeminent performing artists. “One of the things that sets Trebas’

programs apart is the proximity with the teachers that students enjoy. In most cases our class size is small, we can take care of individual needs and ensure a great outcome for every student,” says Dominique. “In addition, most of our instructors are still active in the industry; they manage artists, have their own record labels and work on films or in television. Having teachers who know exactly what’s happening in the industry today makes our programs much more current and timely than if we were simply teaching from texbooks.” Dominique notes that another popular aspect of the program is that in most cases, students have access to field experience. “They go with their teachers to visit venues, be part of various events in the industry and work at different concerts, so they get a lot of hands-on learning in addition to what is covered in the classroom.” He stresses that the entertainment industry is now so fast-paced that receiving a foundation in business skills is crucial to success. “I wish I had been able to participate in a program like this when I started out – it would have saved me a lot of time and money learning on my own and figuring things out the hard way.” Like his colleagues at Trebas, Dominique is a bit of a ‘jack of all trades’,

something he sees as essential for success in the business. “We expose students to many different aspects of the industry, from the artist’s perspective, the legal perspective and the management perspective,” he says. “Ours is a very practical program – we teach students how they can make a living from their craft and how to handle the hundreds of decisions that have to be made every day. It is very difficult to find the information we impart online or in books. By learning from people working in the industry, students gain knowledge about different types of contracts, the many different music and movie distribution channels and so much more.” It’s not only Trebas’ instructors and high quality curriculum that make this career college an appealing choice. “Regular intakes throughout the year and access to financial aid make it a lot easier for students to come here, study, get their diploma then start working right away,” notes Dominique. “Our graduates who want to work in the business generally do not have trouble finding employment. Recent changes in the industry mean there are a lot of exciting new opportunities with various entertainment companies. Some of our students go on to work in web marketing, music publishing, promotion or even copyright administration. Others work for online music services, radio and television broadcasters and even in the video game industry. We also have graduates who choose to establish their own businesses, whether it’s a record label or managing artists. I find it very exciting to see where they end up.” What does Dominique enjoy the most about teaching at a career college? “It’s the energy of the young people and how eager they are to make their mark in the industry. They are hungry, they want to learn. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to guide them.”

Choosing a career college Dig out a pen and start making a list! [ 24 ] www.nacc.ca

Choosing where to pursue your education and training is one the biggest decisions you will ever make. There are many great career colleges out there – almost 1200 across Canada, in fact – but it’s still important to choose the school and the program that offer the best fit for you. To get started, one of the most effective ways is to make a short-list of the colleges (or even the programs, to begin with) that are most appealing to you. Once you’ve narrowed things down a little, then it’s time to write out that famous old “pros and cons” list. It’s a method that really does work as it forces you to look at both sides of an issue or idea. By taking a few minutes to write out what you like and what you don’t about the options you’re exploring, you’ll already be making huge strides toward making a decision. Here are a few things to consider when writing that list – with some examples of questions for you think about. PROGRAM AVAILABILITY Q: Once you’ve selected your preferred program, is it available at the college campus where you’d like to apply? LOCATION Q: Do you want (or need) to be closer to home? This will be an important consideration if you will be working simultaneously while attending school, have other

commitments at home or are working within a specific budget. Q: Are you looking to make a change and explore new opportunities in a different place? If this is an option, make sure you consider colleges in towns or cities that might be appealing places in which to live. Q: Have you visited the college? Don’t wait! Schedule a visit or tour and try to arrange to sit in on some classes at the same time. This will really help you know whether this school is the one for you. SCHEDULES Q: Is flexibility important to you? Some career colleges offer evening or weekend courses to help students work around a busy life. Q: What are the intake dates throughout the year? Sometimes you can enjoy smaller class sizes by starting in March, for example, instead of September. COST Q: Have you completed a draft budget? Make sure you understand your financial resources – and that includes costs for tuition, books, living expenses (food, rent) and transportation. CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

There are many great career colleges out there – almost 1200 across Canada, in fact – but it’s still important to choose the school and the program that offer the best fit for you.

Q: Have you researched the financial aid that is available to you in your province? You may be eligible for support. YOUR GOALS Q: What do you want to achieve at the end of your program? Is it a job or continuing your education? Asking yourself these questions now will help you narrow down your choices. If you change your mind about your goals along the way, that’s OK! But start the thinking process sooner rather than later and ask questions. [ 26 ] www.nacc.ca

EMPLOYMENT POSSIBILITIES Q: Are you pursuing a career college education because you want a better job or career? Maybe you want to start working immediately after your training. If your main goal is to secure employment, a number of career colleges have strong connections with employers, with many programs having very high placement rates. Talk to the college about what they do to help their students find jobs in their field.

TALK TO OTHER STUDENTS Q: What are others saying? In your research, don’t hesitate to include what other students have to say. As well, career colleges often feature recent students on their websites, and some may have taken the program you are interested in. If you really want to learn more, ask the college to connect you with a recent graduate or current student.

PLAN FOR SUCCESS Classroom to career in just 60 weeks! PROGRAMS START IN SPRING & FALL

FIND OUT THE DETAILS Q: What is the duration of the program? Q: Are there any academic prerequisites? Q: What is the approximate class size? Q: What is included and excluded in the tuition (books, uniforms, tools, etc.)? Q: What is the anticipated salary range for jobs in the field(s) you are considering?

LEARN ABOUT CREDENTIALS Q: What kind of diploma, certificate, trade or apprenticeship training is offered for your program of choice?

Business Administration Counselling Skills/Social-Human Services Child and Youth Care Worker Correctional Work and Policing Foundations Continuing Care Assistant IT Specialist Interior Decorating Paralegal Plus Medical & Dental Office Administrator Travel and Tourism Management

Q: Will you be adequately prepared by your program to write any relevant licensing or certification exams? Q: Will your career college credits be transferrable to other colleges or universities should you wish to continue your studies?

Experts offer advice for choosing a career It’s all about finding the right fit for you [ 28 ] www.nacc.ca

Choosing a career or field of study – and figuring out the best school for you – those are big decisions. They are big investments. You owe it to yourself to take the time to do your research, and ask the right questions. We are tremendously fortunate in Canada to have a huge selection of choice when it comes to post-secondary education. But sometimes, that choice can become overwhelming so we’ve asked some pros to offer you a little advice.

LIVE LIFE THE WAY YOU WANT

Education has never come with a bigger ticket than now which is why it is so important to choose the right program.

Pursue a career in the arts.

Alan Kearns

“Education has never come with a bigger ticket than now which is why it is so important to choose the right program,” says Alan Kearns, founder and head coach at CareerJoy, a national career counselling and coaching firm. “Education is often like a wedding. People spend more time planning the wedding and picking the dress than they do thinking about the marriage itself. They haven’t done the pre-work. The same is true with education. If you decide you want to be a nurse, but don’t like blood, it’s not going to work. When thinking about a program it’s all about the right fit. People thrive in careers that they are interested in, when that is balanced with market conditions.” Kearns says there are two fundamental questions to ask yourself: who and how, meaning who are you, who do you want to be and how are you going to get there. He likes to use an analogy of train tracks to suggest that the who and the how need to run in parallel. Above all else, he says, it’s vital to ask practical questions and do good research. “In a world that is very competitive, what are you doing to differentiate yourself?” You’ve probably been told that an ideal career involves doing something you love. Jennifer McIntee-Leinweber, president of the Council of School Counsellors of the Alberta Teachers’ Association, says pinpointing what you love to do and using it CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

as your starting off point is absolutely the right way to begin your career planning. “You will probably hear a lot of opinions from a variety of sources, but remember that it is you who has to get up every day to go to work, so you should be at peace with the decisions that you have made.” She suggests talking to people working in the fields that interest you to find out what they think about their career (the good and the not so good). “If you have time, try to job-shadow, volunteer or log some work experience hours in the general field of interest.” “If you’re still in high school, use the services of your school counsellors and your career practitioner plus research potential jobs in the specific areas you’re considering. Finally, remember that as high school graduates, time is on your side and that it is completely acceptable to change career paths or schooling paths once you start to find out more about what really piques your interest.” School counsellors and career practi[ 30 ] www.nacc.ca

tioners have their fingers on the pulse of what is happening in post-secondary schools and the labour market. “I would suggest that even before leaving high school that students ensure that have used the services of their school counsellor / career practitioner,” says McInteeLeinweber. “These professionals are able to provide invaluable information about what is needed now, and what skills are projected to be needed in the future.” She notes that whether you’re still in high school or are an adult looking at retraining options, predicting exact skills that may be needed in the future can be difficult, so it’s important, in addition to pursuing specialized training, to seek out opportunities to work on developing other skills such as leadership, teamwork and time management. Here are a few more tips to get your career planning started: • If you have just decided to upgrade your skills or take on a new career
