A cool new shop is serving up the sweet stuff By Jacob Hoytema
No longer will Wellington West have to go through a long, hot summer without a cool refreshment: Cardinal Ice Cream, the neighbourhood’s first locally owned ice cream stand, is open for business on Wellington West. The new enterprise is co-founded and co-owned
by Andrea Stokes, formerly of the Wellington West BIA, and Thomas Williams, owner of Hintonburger. Before its current incarnation, the shack that houses Cardinal was used by Hintonburger for product storage and refrigeration. Andrea and Thomas had been talking about starting an ice cream business for years and figured that the shack
would make the perfect location. With the addition of a porch, a cutout of a cardinal, and some colourful lawn chairs, the shack took on a positively beach-y feel. Thomas says that the neighbourhood had been lacking a local ice cream vendor for too long. Continued on page 2

“We had a similar but smaller-scale concept with Hintonburger. We had lived in the neighbourhood for a couple years and were like, ‘you can’t get fries and a burger anywhere!’” Thomas says. “It’s the same thing… we have really great local ice cream so why not showcase it and sell it in a neighbourhood that doesn’t have any yet.” “The business has already become a photobooth on social media, because it’s such a cute little situation, such a cute little building,” adds Andrea. Indeed, many customers, including Kitchissippi Ward Councillor Jeff Leiper, have posted pictures of their ice cream excursions online. Cardinal’s cones are made with Tracey’s Ice Cream, sourced out of Renfrew. Andrea and Thomas have plans to expand their local selec-
tion, mentioning an upcoming partnership with Moo Shu Ice Cream, an Ottawa ice cream and truffle-making company. “The idea is we will be even more local — we will be a purveyor of products, hopefully, that are made in the city as well,” says Andrea, who is also the writer behind KT’s Art Tag series. Cardinal has in fact already begun a partnership with Flying Hound (see page three of this issue). Flying Hound is another new business that specializes in frozen treats, but these are intended for four-legged patrons. Every Tuesday night, the two businesses team up to host an “Ice Cream Social,” so people and their pets can both enjoy a cool treat. Andrea’s two daughters, Tallie and Jaime Doyle, are helping their mother run the new business by taking shifts behind the counter. Far from being “voluntold,” Andrea says that the two
girls were enthusiastic about the work. “Ever since they could play together, they played store or restaurant,” says Andrea. “Your mom opens an ice cream stand, you get to serve your friends, you have to be responsible… they’re learning responsibility and entrepreneurship and counting change and quality control and quantity control. So it’s pretty great.” So what’s in store for Cardinal? They’ll keep rotating their selection of flavours (except for a few constant favourites, says Andrea) and play host to more community events. Thomas and Andrea also intend to stay open all year round — though they may have to switch up their menu once the cold weather hits. Cardinal Ice Cream is located at 991 Wellington St.W. You can also follow them at twitter.com/ Cardinal_IceCrm or find them on Instagram.

Harlow is enjoying one of the frozen treats from Flying Hound. They’re made from healthy ingredients dogs will appreciate (liver, kefir and blueberries anyone?) on an edible sweet potato stick.
The dog days of summer New purveyor of frozen treats for our furry friends comes to Kitchissippi By Jacob Hoytema
Every dog owner has been there at some point: during a summer walk, you’ve stopped for ice cream or a popsicle and are trying to eat it before it melts. Your puppy friend is eager to share in the snacking, and you have to hoist your treat high in the air to prevent your pet from sneaking a bite. (Or maybe you don’t.) Westboro business owners, Karen Gibson and Grazyna Szawlowski, say that they’ve come up with a solution to the problem with their line of pooch popsicles from their new startup, Flying Hound. Using locally sourced “human food” ingredients, they’ve crafted a series of cold treats made especially for dogs. They don’t sell in any stores, but instead visit several different locations throughout the week in the Westboro and Hintonburg area on their “treat trike,” a cargo bicycle fitted with an icebox from which they sell their wares. Karen and Grazyna have come up with popsicles in a number of different flavours, such as bone broth, pumpkin and cottage cheese, liver, and raspberry. Although the popsicles are made of ingredients that are edible for both dogs
and people, Grazyna notes “the flavour combinations might not be to [a human’s] liking.” Before becoming business partners, Karen and Grazyna lived on the same street and had the mutual hobby of cooking for their dogs. They had discussed the idea of a mobile dog treat vendor, and after discovering they could take a cargo bike with an icebox, decided to go the frozen route. “Everybody loves to have a popsicle or an ice cream cone in the summer, and then sometimes people will share it with their dog, and that’s not the best practice because some dogs have dietary issues,” says Grazyna. In response, the two neighbours decided to create a treat that was both enjoyable and nutritious for dogs. The popsicles themselves are made on an edible sweet potato stick and come in biodegradable packaging, meaning no waste is left behind. Flying Hound recently started collaborating with the summer’s other new local ice cream vendor: every Tuesday night, the Flying Hound treat trike stops at Cardinal Ice Cream (see our cover story) to host an “Ice Cream Social” for pooches and their owners.
“We’re really quite enjoying this whole experience of having people share treats with their dogs, and we’re hoping that maybe it’s creating some summer memories too,” Grazyna says of the Tuesday night events. Aside from being sold in-person at the treat trike, Flying Hound’s products can also be ordered online to be hand-delivered within Ottawa, and shipped in an
insulated package everywhere else. For the moment, Flying Hound has no plans to move into a store or permanent location. Grazyna says that even after being open since June, the mobile business model has attracted a lot of repeat customers. For more information about their products – and to find out where they’re stopping next – go to flyinghound.ca.

KT COLLECTABLE TREASURES
The ups and downs of collecting Holding on to any of these items? They’re probably not worth as much as you think By Shaun Markey
There’s an ebb and flow to the antique market, which in part is caused by the state of the overall economy. There are other factors too. Personal taste and social trends also play a part in determining what’s popular. Let’s take a moment to look more closely at antiques that have fallen out of favour in recent years. While prices for all antiques have been down considerably since the economic slump of 2008, in large part due to Wall Street zealots who sold the world investment community a pig in a poke, otherwise known as mortgage backed securities, some categories of antiques have suffered more than others. Brown furniture (a.k.a. mahogany and walnut furniture) has really taken a beating in the marketplace over the last decade. The dark colour doesn’t resonate with today’s collectors. Although not antique, but still well crafted, solid walnut and mahogany furniture made in large quantities between the wars, 1920 to 1950, has reached almost give-away prices. I have seen people struggle to make a few hundred dollars for entire dining room sets. Of course, since there is so much of this furniture it is sitting in many, many homes and apartments across the country. It continues to flood the market but is met with a cool reception by dealers and collectors. It’s been sent to the sidelines by mid-century modern, shabby chic and other popular trends. It’s a shame, because the brown furniture of that period was made from solid wood, following classic lines and will be around a lot longer than some of the trendy furniture examples that have replaced it. True antique furniture
from the 19th century and earlier fares somewhat better although prices and demand for this category is also weak. Canadiana pine furniture, so much of it stripped of its original colour in the 1960’s and 70’s, has also suffered the same fate as the walnut / mahogany category. Good form in a piece of Canadiana furniture will help preserve the value over time, but run of the mill pine furniture struggles at auction and in shops.
“Brown walnut and mahogany furniture has been sent to the sidelines by mid century modern, shabby chic and other popular trends.” Another factor in the weak demand for furniture is living space. The size of homes and condos is often not conducive to larger furniture pieces. Glass, china and ceramic figurines have also suffered a similar fate. Once steady performers, these categories have sunk in popularity to a point where there is barely a pulse in their market. Chintz china was in vogue several years ago but that ship has certainly sailed. At one point, rare stacking teapot sets in hard to find patterns fetched $1000. Not anymore. There are exceptions of course. Certain types of glass, pottery and ceramics continue to fetch robust prices. Some Moorcroft pottery, American art pottery and French art glass still fetch
good prices but the quality, condition and particular style have to be exceptional. The rarity of an antique or collectable has a huge impact on its value. It stands to reason that if an antique item is available in large quantities, the price will reflect the availability. It’s a case of supply and demand. That rule can be applied to just about any type of antique or collectable. There are many exceptions, however, to this rule. While prices may be down, antiques and collectables are still extremely popular. Design magazines and TV shows promote antiques with continuing zeal. The problem, though, is that so much material has become “collectable.” There’s a veritable sea of stuff out there. It’s flooded flea markets and other venues, which further adds to the problem. It’s difficult to find good antiques when surrounded by junk. It’s perhaps only natural to equate the quality of an antique to its monetary value. For some collectors, what an antique object is worth in hard currency is secondary to their joy in finding and collecting a particular item. If you enjoy an antique or collectable, that’s terrific. This is how it should be. The majority of collectors don’t plan on selling their things so market value is totally secondary. Sentimental value can often far surpass market value. I don’t own any family antiques but if I did, wild horses couldn’t drag them from my grasp, let alone a bundle of money. A wise individual once told me to only collect the best. Those words still ring true to this day. If you are going to put the time and effort into finding certain antiques, be patient, wait for the best example to come along. Buy that one. Excellent things will always hold their value.

What is the future for the Sisters of the Visitation monastery? Submitted by David Jeanes
Behind the archways of the mixed-use development at 88-108 Richmond Road, the former Sisters of the Visitation monastery has a past, a character and hopefully a future.
One corner is a large preconfederation stone mansion. Since 1913 a Gothic chapel and residential wings have enclosed an ornamental courtyard and housed a reclusive order of French nuns. When the nuns left in
For Sale 1125 Gladstone Avenue
2010, the monastery, (socalled because unlike a convent, it kept them apart from the outside world), and its extensive land was sold to Ashcroft Homes. A City heritage designation followed, confirmed after a hearing
by Ontario’s Conservation Review Board. But the building has sat empty since then, awaiting adaptive re-use. However, an engineering study found that the stone walls are actually a veneer with a rubble core and major cracks have developed in the walls, so renovation will be costly. Ontario’s Heritage Act requires conservation of heritage attributes but does not constrain future uses. Ashcroft originally made an offer of community use, particularly with the Gothic chapel, which was the monastery’s only public space where local Catholics attended Sunday worship. The nuns were hidden behind a screen in a separate room to one side, known as the Choeur. The largest main floor rooms were for meals,
where a nun read prayers or scripture, for the nuns’ daily work activities, and for prayer and singing in worship several times each day. Re-use of these spaces could include a restaurant, lounge and cafe, with a patio behind one of the arches of the new building. These would serve the community and animate that outdoor space. They would also benefit the new residents on the whole site. A corridor surrounds the courtyard with windows and wide doors on each side. The unknown 1913 architect was inspired by the cloister of a European monastery or cathedral, but adapted it to Canadian winters. There was a statue and geometric pathways and plantings and it is a protected heritage attribute, which could have new

uses, perhaps covering it with a glass roof, as has been done with heritage buildings such as the British Museum and the West Block of Parliament. Upstairs are many small individual rooms. Small windows and thick walls make adaptive reuse difficult. In Montreal, such spaces have become student residences. Here, offices or seniors’ accommodation may be possible. Other rooms include an infirmary or sick room and a palliative care space for the elderly nuns who lived out their lives in the monastery. The attic is a large open space, lighted by a few small dormer windows. It could be divided in various ways and skylights might be permitted for better natural lighting. Continued on page 12

Getting Divorced? Don’t Get Fleeced.
Painting as self-expression

“My paintings start from a flicker,” says Sarah Barberry Story and photo by Andrea Stokes
Joyce Owen
In my last session of Art Tag, Tomas Padjhauser sent me to meet Hintonburg artist Sarah Barberry. Tomas described her as an artist who works from her emotions, and in a completely different style from her work. I met up with Sarah in her cozy Hintonburg apartment, where every room is colourfully painted and overflowing with the art she creates. Over tea, Sarah and I talked about her compulsion to paint.

Sometimes the hardest thing about painting is parting with your work, says Sarah Barberry.
“I love painting intuitively,” says Sarah. “My paintings start from a flicker and I try to find meaning from these flashes of colour I receive. The paintings direct me, they tell me what story I need to tell. Sometimes I wait and wait before knowing the painting is complete, and I work on them as each one speaks to me.” Sarah has a keen interest in quantum physics, science, and ideas of the metaphysical. She attended many aboriginal ceremonies centred around water, hence the presence of water imagery in much of her work. “All of my pieces are a tapestry of my experiences in the outside world, and I have to wait for everything to converge; a movie, a song, a word, an image. It all has to come together for my eureka moments in painting.” Sarah has an upcoming show at Bread By Us bakery in October, and is working on more exhibitions in the future. She
says her paintings are vulnerable pieces; sometimes, she can’t part with them. Once you step inside her home, you know instantly that this is a person who derives much comfort by surrounding herself with her artwork. Sarah has tagged local artist Dan Martelock as my next interview subject. She’s excited about his

Sarah works as a paint supervisor and oversees the background images at JAM FILLED studios, a local animation company. She manages a team of digital painters who all work from home and are tasked with making sure the background imagery is consistent in style, composition, and colour. It’s a big job, but satisfies only a part of her desire to work with colour and paint. Sarah studied Animation at Algonquin College and finished up just as the industry was in a hiring freeze. She moved to Sudbury to seize an opportunity to work as a layout artist. She spent most of 2009 practicing traditional painting and with the help of a mentor, learned to move from acrylics to oils. She says the time spent learning traditional skills was crucial to her as a form of self-expression. “My own work is so different from any art work I do digitally,” says Sarah. As I’ve now learned through interviews with digital artists, almost every artist thrives on the joy that comes from holding a brush or pencil in hand.

Podium in sight for Paralympic judo fighter Legally blind athlete Tony Walby muscles his way to Rio Story and photo by Bradley Turcotte
Declared legally blind in 2006, Tony Walby assumed he would instruct judo for the remainder of his athletic career. When a colleague informed him he qualified to be a Paralympian, the former national champion flipped at the chance and will represent Canada in Rio this September. Tony’s interest in the Japanese discipline began when he was a student at Connaught Public School. Tina Takahashi instructed an after school program and Tony, who turns 43 in August, excelled at the sport. The sixth kyu, or beginner, started training at Melrose
Avenue’s Takahashi Martial Arts School daily and “never left.” A member of the national judo team since 1989 with a few absences along the way, Tony collected several titles including junior and senior national champion before retiring after the 2008 national championship. He holds the distinction of being the only legally blind Canadian competitor to win the “able bodied” title. Tony’s sight began to wane in his mid20s, baffling ophthalmologists. He eventually underwent genetic testing, revealing cone dystrophy as his diagnosis in 2009. “That’s the twist of it all. I didn’t know that Paralympic judo was visually
REGISTRATION
impaired. We always called it blind judo. In my head I wasn’t blind,” says Tony. “Even though I was legally blind, in my head I could still see. I just couldn’t see the level of being able to drive.” Determined, Tony re-entered competition in 2010. In order to qualify for the 2012 London Paralympics, he required stellar performances at the last two qualifiers. Tony delivered, winning heavyweight gold at the 2010 Pan Am Championships. After placing seventh in London, Tony retired once again. Yet the pull of the podium drew him back, he says. Reflecting on his performance in London, Tony decided to slim down and move out of the heavyweight division. “My first match in London, the fighter from France weighed over 400 pounds,” Tony recalls. “I dead lifted him in the air and slammed him. It took so much energy out of me that in the quarterfinals I lost in the last 15 seconds. I was so exhausted.”
Try a new activity, or return to an old favourite. Program registration begins soon!
Tony Walby is scheduled to compete in Rio on September 10.
Longtime KT readers may recognize Tony from a profile we published in 2012. He’s since moved out of the heavyweight division. Photo by Doulespace Photography
“I’m going to go out there and give it everything I’ve got. Leave it all out on the mat. I think I have the ability to get on that podium and that is the goal.” Training partner and Team Canada member, Mathieu Lemay, helped Tony shed 80 pounds and says his progress leading up to Rio is consistent. “You see a lot more commitment and speed. It trickled down to all the other fighters. Even though he is one of two people going to the Paralympics, everyone at the club has benefited,” Mathieu observes. Despite all the controversy surrounding the Brazilian games, Tony says he is not worried about security or the Zika virus, which he compares to the overblown “hype” around the 2004 SARS outbreak. Tony’s paramount concern is which opponents he draws, citing Georgia’s Zviad Gogotchuri as his most tenacious rival. “This is judo. Anybody can make a mistake. Anybody can go in for a bad throw. Anything can happen. I have 35 years experience. I’m going to go out there and give it everything I’ve got. Leave it all out on the mat. I think I have the ability to get on that podium and that is the goal.” Tony Walby enters the Paralympic shiaijo September 10.

Red tape, delays, high cost Obtaining patio permit proving to be a challenge for local restaurateur Story and photo by Alyson Queen
Twice in the same conversation, Jeff Frost has to pause and holler over to drivers attempting to park by his restaurant, The Wellington Diner. “That spot’s reserved for people with a special permit, you don’t want to get a ticket!” He knows his customers and he takes pride in his restaurant. He recently hired a new chef and is changing up the menu to be more local. “We’re built for families. We’re not a bar,
we’re not a pub.” With a palatable price point and a solid reputation in the neighbourhood, he wants to build a patio to capitalize on the summer season. “I want this next step to give a New York feel for a 50s diner. You could be eating underneath two trees, and it could be a really special thing.” He’s got the makings of a small urban oasis already, with brick retaining walls forming an outdoor terrace beside the restaurant. Here comes the prob-
lem. He can’t use it. He can’t get his plans approved by the City. More than that, he’s spent hundreds of dollars and hours, just to be continuously rejected and delayed at every stage of every application. That includes a revised plan to have large custom windows installed because they would encroach on the sidewalk. “It’s disappointing to see the hurdles that small businesses go through with the City. When a business is looking to make it a bit easier to

It’s frustrating to have plans rejected, but that isn’t Jeff’s biggest issue. He waited weeks for feedback and feels he lost both time and money. “Somebody should be held accountable. To drag someone through these hoops and negotiations at a small business owner’s expense only to say the whole plan is denied? If this was the private sector, someone would be fired.” So he took to Twitter and people started paying
and says he has worked to try and find a solution. One of those options is a re-zoning proposal. That will mean more expense, starting at $8,500 for the application, not to mention a sound engineering report. Even if he pursues that, it’s hard to say if he will get his patio for summer 2017. Despite it all though, while enjoying the morning bustle from the picnic table in his “not a patio,” Jeff is keeping his chin up. “The reason I want a patio in the first place is to serve my customers and Kitchissippi.” “I’ll build whatever the City allows me build.”
attention, including Councillor Jeff Leiper. According to Zachary, the challenges and delays with having a patio approved aren’t unique to the Wellington Diner. “Across the board, businesses are subject to a lot of hurdles in getting patios. Ottawa also has one of the highest fees,” he adds. Interestingly, the City recently completed a “Sidewalk Patio Review Program.” This year they are creating a new Right of Way Patio By-law to improve service to the restaurant industry and the public. The report is due out this summer. Councillor Leiper says he is aware of the issues

Little libraries in lovely locales Got a hankering to read? Can’t make it to the library? Check out one of the many mini libraries in Kitchissippi Story and photos by Joseph Hutt
If last issue’s Summer Reads theme has sent you off on a book hunt, there are a few locals here in Kitchissippi who might be able to help you get your literary fix. Hidden away on quiet streets, if you know where to look, you will find picturesque little cabinets – handmade and painted, secure against the weather – that become small lending libraries for their respective communities. Children and adults are welcome to peruse the shelves, well-stocked as they are with literature for all ages. The only string attached is a mere gesture towards self-sufficiency. “If you take a book, you leave a book,” explains Barbara Zuchowicz, who curates the little library at 35 Kenora St. “Not that you have to do them at the same time.”
Through this, each of the little libraries listed below experiences great turnover, to the point where, by the time you have finished the first book you have borrowed, there is surely a surprise or two waiting for when you visit again. Considering how much of a community hub hers has become, Barbara has even considered upgrading the functionality of her little library by allowing people to post community notices on its sides. While most little libraries live a relatively static existence (aside from their ever-changing contents), the Englehardt family’s library, at 664 Mansfield Ave., is more of an ongoing family project. Cobbling together the remnants of some other household projects, their little library began as just a public shelf built by Erin Englehardt and her two daughters, Helen and May. “Then we decided that some

people shouldn’t just sit on the curb and read a book,” says May Englehardt. “So we had an old bench and my sister painted it, and we attached them.” Now, their little library has become a lush retreat, with a stone path and cherry tomato garden that patrons are welcome to snack on. “Every now and then we’ll find someone sitting there reading,” Mark affirms. And that is really one of the more fascinating effects of these little libraries. Not only do they provide people with great books, they seem capable of building and strengthening the bonds within these communities. According to Barbara, “It’s only been two months, but I have been able to put names to faces of people I know who live in the neighbourhood but we’ve never talked… It’s just another thing that pulls everybody together.”
Inspired by her nephew’s own Little Library, Barbara Zuchowicz (left) has created something of a community hub for young and old alike.

Future uncertain for monastery Continued from page 6 In contrast to the monastery, the 1865 stone house has large rooms with big windows on three floors. They are in separate wings around a large hall with an impressive staircase, lighted by a south-facing Gothic window. Re-use could be as a high quality restaurant, like successful examples in similar heritage buildings in Ottawa. The unusual plan is known as a “pinwheel,” based on the residential architecture of English Gothic architect Augustus Welby Pugin. The 1865 architect, Sydney Bowles Fripp, came from England in 1857 and designed other important houses and civic buildings in Ottawa. The house was owned successively by James Dyke, a prominent merchant, gentleman farmer George Eaton, senator and lumberman James Skead and entrepreneur George Holland. The house has original features, inside and out, with square stone lintels over the windows, Gothic relieving arches in the stone walls, and tracery in the wooden window frames and the main door. Both house and monastery have east-facing verandahs, which had views over open fields towards the city where the successive owners did business, using the macadamized Richmond Road. The City and Ashcroft agreed that the archways and the area between the new building and the monastery would be public space, together with the “Nun’s Walk,” lined with preserved trees leading to Byron Avenue. It was
where the nuns took their exercise, even cycling, secluded by high walls around the open space where they grew vegetables. It appears now that the building may not have public uses. This would limit access to part of the exterior and perhaps not the courtyard. A senior’s residence, as approved in the zoning of the south half of the large site, might replace mixed uses. However, either public or private use gives more
hope for future survival of the building than leaving it empty. The public will have a say, at least during applications for heritage approvals at both the City’s Built Heritage Subcommittee and Planning Committee. Heritage Ottawa, which advocates for conservation of such important buildings, will be part of this process, as we were for heritage designation. But hopefully other consultations will happen
between Ashcroft and the community. David Jeanes is president of Heritage Ottawa and a Kitchissippi resident for over 40 years. He was personally involved with the designation of the Monastery and the Conservation Review Board hearing. Since retiring from a career in hightech research and development, he has indulged his passions for railways and architecture with several not-for-profit organizations.

Dovercourt’s new Mystery Machine Gifford Automotive is updating a vintage van for Dovercourt, and it’s positively electric Story and photo by Bradley Turcottte
Dovercourt Recreation Association (DRA) aims to add a jolt of electricity to their community events this summer once Gifford Automotive completes work on a 1979 mini electric van. Built by Subaru in 1979, the little vehicle was sold as a non-engine body to Jet Industries in Austin, Texas. From there, the van climbed further up the hipster ladder, buzzing all the way to Portland, Oregon in 1981 where it served as a municipal van. Acquired by Gifford Automotive in 2007, the McRae Avenue business hoped – with time and money – the van would become an eye-catching promotional vehicle for the garage. On a routine service visit to Gifford Automotive, DRA executive director John Rapp spotted the unique machine on the lot and it sparked his interest. After years of causal negotiations, John says the-little-van-that-could will be DRA’s signature charitable chariot, deploying staff and materials to the association’s events around Kitchissippi. “The fact that it’s electric and highly efficient in Westboro, the home of t r e e - h u g g i n g … Birkenstock-wearing, ecologically friendly people… what a great opportunity to get a fully electric vehicle to do this short-haul work,” says John. Gifford associate Dave Brunskill estimates he has clocked 100 hours of work on the van and says updating the battery system remains the largest challenge. “The problem is the battery technology that we’re using and how we’re using it is a little tricky. We’re having to be clever,” Dave divulges. Prices for battery systems can be shocking, Gifford Automotive’s Carl Chaboyer observes, citing systems used by Tesla, which run up to $40,000 each. Electric vehicles sold independently online come with “just needs batteries” taglines but

these declarations are deceptive, Carl continues, as there are many variations of this particular technology.
“I see a 35-year-old electric vehicle that’s still viable today as being something that’s extremely interesting.” The Gifford team decided to move away from the old and dangerous flooded cell technology, opting for a “smaller and slightly different leadacid chemistry” making the van safer and more efficient. “The original battery technology was substantially heavier. It comprised over 50 per cent of the overall weight of the vehicle... We were hoping to eliminate some of these problems and improve things but we never really solved the charging issue,”
says Carl, who first became fascinated with renewable energy while studying mechanical engineering at Lakehead University. “I see a 35-year-old electric vehicle that’s still viable today as being something that’s extremely interesting. It had limitations 35 years ago, but it’s still a viable technology.” John says the self-contained system will be charged at Dovercourt and that it can be plugged in anywhere. Further upgrades to the van include modifications to the motor, brakes and clutch in addition to relocating the bulk of the high voltage electrical circuitry. The estimated cost for work on the mini van is $10,000. Farm Boy pledges to sponsor the project and John encourages anyone else who would like to support the vintage vehicle to contact his office. “Usually, with recreation, you come to that place and you do what you are going to do … you go to a facility,” John says. “In our case we go out to animate.” The revitalized wagon should be ready to power DRA’s events by the end of August.

Hey hey it’s … Davy Jones? Kitchissippi resident strikes a big item off his bucket list By Jacob Hoytema
In his line of work, Kitchissippi artist David W. Jones has met more than a few well-known musicians. Being one of Ottawa’s foremost visual artists, David has done portraits and album covers for several jazz masters and has even collaborated with the NAC Orchestra on a couple of performance paintings. But it wasn’t until Bluesfest this summer that David had the rock-star encounter he’d been waiting for since childhood when he got to meet two members of the Monkees. The Monkees were, of course, once fronted by another famous David “Davy” Jones, and Ottawa David had been hoping for years to make
a connection. David W. Jones (the painter) was only in elementary school in 1966 when The Monkees released their debut record and starred in their own TV show, becoming a pop music sensation. His classmates were quick to make the name connection between him and the group’s lead singer. “At school, I was teased, and I pretended that I didn’t like it, but I really loved it,” says David. “I would get phone calls from girls who would say, ‘is Davy Jones in?’ and hang up.” Indeed, David says that even though everyone nowadays calls him David, he has childhood friends who still call him Davy. One of these friends is Evelyn Jakubinek, who
kept in touch with David since their school years. So when David obtained passes to meet the Monkees through a friend who had connections to Bluesfest organizers, he knew there would be no one better to accompany him than Evelyn. Once at the concert, David and Evelyn were ushered backstage with some other fans to meet Monkees’ Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz before the show began. The third surviving Monkee, Michael Nesmith, didn’t join the others on this tour. David Jones’ musical counterpart, Davy, the former lead singer, had sadly passed away in 2012. Once his chance to meet the Monkees arrived, David got right to the point.

Business Hours Mon-Fri 9-6 Sat 9-5 Sun 11-4 Appointments Welcome
A. With so many ways to spend money these days, sometimes it can be hard to prioritize spending on your clothing. However, research shows that by investing in your appearance, the right people notice, you feel more confident and actually perform better at work. Buying better quality clothing means the initial outlay will be more, but the cost-per-wear reduces your expense because the garments retain their good looks over time (after several washings or drycleaning). Secondly, choose a colour theme and stick to it, so that your jackets, shirts and pants are interchangeable. Use blue, grey or brown as your base colour and seek knowledgeable advice to determine which colours compliment your skin type. When buying custom clothing, buy an extra pair of trousers with your suit to make it last, as pants take most wear and tear. Finally, try to establish yourself with a competent clothing expert that you can trust & who will give you good advice. Great sales professionals should make you feel like they are your agent - they want you to look good, and want you to get ahead.

“I shook hands with both of them and I said ‘how do you do… my name is David Jones.’ So they stopped and kind of raised an eyebrow,” David recalls. “So I handed Micky Dolenz my business card, and he says ‘he’s David Jones!’ So, it was like maybe 15 or 20 seconds of conversation and they couldn’t have been more gracious and humble and congenial. They were really nice guys.” Incredibly, David very nearly met another famous David Jones many years ago. This David Jones, better known by
“I would get phone calls from girls who would say, ‘is Davy Jones in?’ and hang up.” the stage name David Bowie, was staying in a downtown Ottawa hotel where David W. Jones the artist worked as a bellhop while still a university student. Although the late pop star’s bodyguard wouldn’t allow the young David W. Jones to carry luggage directly into the suite, he did gruffly tell him upon noticing David’s name tag that “that’s
David Bowie’s real name.” Aside from almost meeting rock stars who share his name, David Jones also helps organize the West End Studio Tour (westendstudiotour.ca), which showcases the work of artists in the Westboro, Hintonburg and Wellington West area. It will be taking place the third and fourth weekends of September.

DOVERCOURT STORIES We take pride in our people, our clients, volunteers and our staff. After close to 30 years of operations we have some great stories! If you would like to help make room for everyone, please contribute to our building campaign. Visit www.dovercourt.org/enterprise/donate
This is Barbara. This is Dovercourt. When Barbara had a stroke in 2007, she wasn’t sure she’d ever walk again. During her rehabilitation program at Elizabeth Bruyere Hospital, her therapist recommended the Post-Stroke Aquafit program at Dovercourt. She took the advice and never looked back. After two years of aquafit, she started the Rehab Walking program, and her weekly fitness regimen has continued to this day. A strong believer in the “use it or lose it” philosophy, Barbara’s optimism and determination have proven her original concerns wrong – she did walk again!
This is Ian. This is Dovercourt. Ian always felt a little different from those around him and it wasn’t until he was an adult that he could put a name to that feeling. Ian was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, also known as Asperger Syndrome. Soon after, he heard about Dovercourt’s WAVE (Work and Volunteer Experience) program. He saw it as an opportunity that might enrich his life skills and employability. And sure enough it did. In 2014, he became a volunteer apprentice. Within a year, he had a paid position wearing two hats – Group Lead and Social Media Coordinator.
This is Mijin and Oscar. This is Dovercourt. Mijin and her son Oscar have taken full advantage of what Dovercourt has to offer young parents and their babies, including pre- and post-natal aquafit, Mom and Baby Bootcamp, and baby sign language classes. It the little things that add up to a real sense of community at Dovercourt for Mijin. Like the fact that her aquafit instructor, Anna, who is also a doula would teach moms how to properly swaddle, or that the “grads” of Dovercourt’s pre- and post-natal classes get together for a potluck picnic. And according to Mijin, Kindercorner (childcare while Mom exercises) is “the best thing ever invented.”
This is Shelley Ann. This is Dovercourt. In 1992, Shelley Ann enquired about joining a group fitness class at Dovercourt. Concerned that her visual impairment might pose challenges, she was delighted when they said “Come on in. We’ll find a way to make it work.” Ever since, Shelley Ann has been a fixture at Dovercourt. She even sat on the Board of Directors, where she tirelessly advocated for accessibility for all. She is a remarkable woman who has both climbed the CN Tower and competed in 16 triathalons.
This is Will. This is Dovercourt. Back in the early 1980s, Will was a hyperactive kid who needed a safe outlet. He found it on the hockey rink, tennis court and at the pool at Dovercourt. When he became a teenager, he landed his first real job as a counsellor in Dovercourt’s after-school program. This role helped cultivate his natural aptitude for leadership and marked the beginning of journey that would take him to where he is today – a Liberal MP on Parliament Hill.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the City of Ottawa/ Recipient remercie sincèrement la Ville d’Ottawa de son soutien financier.
Our Commitment to children: As a High Five® accredited organization, Dovercourt is committed to developing and delivering programs that are child-centered and reflect our values of respect, diversity and inclusion. Every age and ability uses this updated fitness focused room: aerial yoga, TRX, baby and me fitness, spinning and more enjoy this bright sunny room located on the lower level right by the main entrance. A sprung hardwood floor, well maintained equipment and great instructors make for a fun and safe fitness experience. We thank them for their support of this room, and for supporting our local outdoor rink every winter. www.carlingmotors.ca
OTTAWA PHYSIOTHERAPY AND SPORT CLINICS ROOM: This is our biggest room and hosts daily fitness programs (with a great new sound system) as well as after school programs, Hoop jams, party rentals and more. Located on the upper level, follow the music to find it! Ottawa Physiotherapy and Sport Clinics is a busy and friendly clinic with three locations, offering help for those recovering from a sports injury or dealing with chronic pain, who provide services including acupuncture, massage therapy, aquatherapy, and custom knee bracing. MORRIS HOME TEAM ROOM: This will be the feature room of our building expansion, and will be located on the upper level in the space between the end of the pool hall and Dovercourt Avenue. At approximately 2500 square feet, this will be a big bright activity space with southern exposure that we expect to be a busy hub for seniors’ fitness in the daytime and for adults in the evenings. Of course, like every space at Dovercourt, we expect it to be busy all of the time for all ages and abilities. Morris Home Team is one of our oldest friends and best sponsors. Over the years, this local Real Estate family have provided us with a bouncy house, two cargo vans (the Dovercat funmobiles!) sponsorship for our staff uniforms, and more. We are delighted that the centrepiece of our expansion will bear their brand. www.morrishometeam.com
