T

here is quite a bit of change going on along the Wellington/ Richmond Road corridor. We’ve had some businesses leave, to be replaced by a fresh crop of newcomers.

The neighbourhood may be changing, but these new businesses seem to fit right in with the crowd, offering new experiences, products, and more things to do in Kitchissippi.

It took awhile, but one of the biggest additions of note is the arrival of the new Second Cup/Pinkberry on Richmond Road at Holland Avenue. The location is in competition with the nearby Bridgehead and Thyme and Again for the area’s coffee market but will no doubt see a good share of foot traffic in the location once inhabited by iconic World of Maps.

Just down the street is a new law office, one with deep history in the neighbourhood. Formerly Nectar Fine Teas, the location at 1250 Wellington St. W. is returning to its roots, in a way.

DioGuardi Law, co-run by Paul and Brigitte DioGuardi, follows in a long line of DioGuardis. The spot was once occupied by another Dioguardi, Paul’s father, under the name “Phillipe’s Smoke Shop” back in the 1950s.

“It was just a small location, but my father put me through law school and he put my sister through medical school,” says Paul. The law office promises a friendly, drop-on-by atmosphere and a speciality in wills, offering a new selection of services to the community.

Meanwhile, Hair Fellas is opening a new school for barbers. Located a bit further west on Wellington, the school offers low-cost barber programs that promise to bring an apprenticeship atmosphere to barber education. For the new generation of barbers, this will no doubt be a wonderful resource.

Further into Hintonburg, a French bakery has risen. Les Moulins La Fayette is in the Eddy building at Irving and Wellington West across from Tooth and Nail. Its location makes it an excellent spot for an afternoon pick-me-up. See page 9 for more information about this new addition to the neighbourhood.

Near the Parkdale Market, there is a whole lot of change going on. Not only was Holland’s Cake location taken over

by Morning Owl, but Crazy Carl’s at 233 Armstrong St. is now The Nostalgia Warehouse. It’s a perfect opportunity to grab a coffee and browse vintage decor and collectibles.

Moving west, Arc of Life Chiropractic opened at 1318 Wellington St W. near Clarendon Avenue. They offer massage therapy as well as chiropractic care.

Luxury consignment shop and showroom, Valamode, opened at 1367 Wellington St. W. If you’re interested in luxury brands and fashion, this is the destination for you.

The gallery has been part of the Westboro arts and culture scene for 10 years and they are celebrating this special milestone with a dance party on August 18 from 9 p.m. on. All proceeds go to Cornerstone Housing for Women, an organization which provides housing for women in Ottawa and is opening a new residence in Westboro this summer.

While Trish is excited to be celebrating 10 years, she is aware of the challenges new businesses face establishing themselves in the competitive Westboro marketplace.

“Starting a small business is hard.

Rewarding, but hard,” she says. “There

are a lot of new businesses coming in that really seem to get the Westboro vibe.”

The gallery’s official anniversary celebrations happen to coincide with the Westboro Fuse Street Festival.

Trish promises that Wall Space’s offering for the festival will be the “most instagrammable location” on the strip.

(That sounds like a challenge to the other participating businesses!)

Westboro, Wellington Village, and Hintonburg are always evolving.

While some businesses have departed, cool new ventures have been steadily filling their places. What’s next for the neighbourhood? Only time will tell.

My husband and I had a great dinner at a local restaurant I’ve been eager to visit, thanks to a gift certificate I won at a recent “Kindred Kats” raffle at Kindred Shop and Studio (1243 Wellington St. W.). There were some excellent prizes up for grabs – all generously donated by local businesses – and all the money raised through raffle ticket sales was donated to Cat Rescue Network. (Read more about the great work they do at catrescuenetwork.org.)

I met some very cute cats that day and I certainly didn’t expect to win a gift certificate to Bar Lupulus (1242 Wellington St. W.). I’ve wanted to dine here ever since Paula Roy wrote about it in KT but haven’t made the time.

Bar Lupulus is famous for its wideranging beer menu (the word Lupulus is Latin for ‘common hop’ after all) and we had a fantastic dinner and, of course, beer.

After dinner we went to Merry Dairy (102 Fairmont Ave.). It was a warm summer evening and the place was full. Our treat of choice: roasted banana ice cream in waffle cones. We enjoyed the scene on the outdoor patio. Families congregated around picnic tables and a little girl’s cone drooped to the side and as a result, dripped melting ice cream on the family dog. He didn’t seem to mind at all.

Meet Greg Cullen “I was born and raised in Centretown and when they tore down Lebreton Flats in 1962 we moved to Highland Park. I’ve lived in the Kitchissippi area most of my life. I like that all the conveniences are here; all the shopping. It’s family oriented area and the crime rate is very low.

People are very nice to one another and I have excellent neighbours.

“I’m retired now, but I used to work in heating and ventilating and I got to go to Japan and work at the Canadian Embassy there for three weeks. They couldn’t hire local people so I got to go.

From there I travelled to Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Thailand. My favourite part of that trip was Phuket, Thailand because it is so beautiful there.

“I was very active when I was younger, but now my arthritis slows me down. I have twin daughters and a son who are all grown up now. If I could do anything in the world, I’d love to travel some more and go to England and France. My dad taught me to never burn any bridges and that’s how I try to live my life.”

Seven years and five million views on his blog later, John has a line of greeting cards in the U.K., online merchandise, and now a book to add to his cartooning career.

His cartoons have even taken him onto the pages of Time Magazine. He was first contacted by email by then-managing editor, Nancy Gibbs. He was originally convinced it was a joke, but he “couldn’t type faster” after realizing it was real – that is, once he “brushed the stucco off my hair from hitting the ceiling.” Since then, his work has appeared in 96 issues, making him the only regularly featured cartoonist in the magazine’s 95-year history.

Kitchissippi’s John Atkinson is the creator of Wrong Hands and the author of Abridged Classics: Brief Summaries of Books You Were Supposed to Read but Probably Didn’t, released last month by HarperCollins. Abridged Classics takes a stab at the literary canon, hilariously summarizing everyone from Jane Austen to Franz Kafka with silly doodles and short captions. Though the book extensively references literature, its appeal is universal, designed for bookworms and anyone who dreaded picking up Shakespeare in high school.

Interestingly, John doesn’t consider himself well read. “I haven’t even read my book,” he jokes. He suggests that readers who memorize his captions can now pretend they’ve read 100 books over the summer by simply reading his.

A graphic designer by trade, John has been drawing cartoons all his life, having submitted cartoons to the New Yorker when he was 13-years-old. “I think I still have the rejection letter somewhere,” he says.

The book is dedicated to his children, who indirectly helped launch a cartooning career borne out of doodles and drawings intended to make them laugh.

After about a year of posting his work online, he began to notice his cartoons were picking up steam. “I’d post a cartoon and ten minutes later I’ll get a message

I love the real estate reality show that renovates the home for its present owner—to entice them to stay—while at the same time a Realtor searches for that perfect property to encourage them to move.

With each episode, the decision to stay or move largely depends on which property checks off more of the wish list boxes – but it is rare that either property meets every criteria for the owner. Compromises are made and the owners find middle ground to either stay or sell.

In real life, to stay or move depends on many factors.

How important is location? Is the house too small or now too big? Is the house worth renovating? And of course, what is the budget when either renovating or moving to a new home?

The Giammaria home is just west of Golden Avenue and is home to Luigi, his wife Samar, and their children Atia (10), Bruno (8) and Mila (5).

There’s a lot going on in this area – any day of the week. Directly across the street is the Byron Avenue linear park, great for a lazy stroll on any day, and the site of the popular farmer’s market every Saturday from May to October.

The many shops and restaurants of Richmond Road, which essentially start at Golden Avenue and continue east, are a stone’s throw from their front door.

A hop and a skip away, one spies two dozen people at the Highland Park Lawn Bowling Club enjoying a beautiful morning. The dew is still wet on the lawn as they send their lawn bowls rolling across the expanse of green.

It becomes clear quite quickly in talking with him that Luigi has packed a great deal of construction experience into his 46 years. He was “on the job” so to speak, at the age of 12 with his father, Bruno Giammaria Sr., an industrious plumber who started his business in Westboro in 1970. Luigi says his father “technically” hasn’t retired but stopped working for clients about ten years ago. Readers may remember Bruno’s Plumbing store on Richmond Road where Kitchenalia is now. Luigi worked alongside his father improving the properties he owned.

espite its massive size, a gorgeous, wooden front door swings open effortlessly and quietly when Luigi Giammaria’s welcomes me into his impressive home at 608 Byron Ave. Let’s put the Giammaria house in context. Situated near the corner of Byron and Golden Avenues, the home stands in sharp contrast to the smaller, traditional homes nearby.

Perhaps the most tell-tale sign that 608 Byron Ave. is not your average new build is an array of narrow blue and white panels that adorn a wide perimeter around the front windows of the house and are also featured on the wall leading up the front stairs. As Luigi points out, the white panels are unpainted concrete called Oko Skin imported from Austria. The blue panels are painted aluminum, which he sourced locally and had painted to his choice of blue colour. “If we get tired of it, I can take them down and have them repainted,” he adds with a laugh.

Iron metal cladding, called Corten, surrounds an equally large upper window on the front of the house. It is meant to oxidize over time to a rusty brown colour.

Luigi also uses it in his landscaping projects. Dark grey acrylic stucco completes the exterior on the front and sides of the house.

Regarding some of the unique aspects of his home, including the blue tiles and the metal window surrounds, Luigi admits he was after something totally original.

“I tend to be a little more out there in trying different styles,” he says. Luigi is also an advocate of recycling in his projects and avoids plastics and materials that include glues.

Continued from previous page Luigi considers his best skill to be working with his hands and problem solving. He attributes his knack for repair to his father and his artistic and design flair to his mother, Norma.

Judging from his stunningly modern home, the construction of which he supervised, Luigi is very much hands-on.

“I love working with my hands,” he says.

“I did 50% of this work.”

With this particular home design Luigi says he was after “a unique style, a certain modern look.” Everywhere in the house, there are features that reflect this.

From the use of 4ft. square ceramic tiles on the floor which he installed himself, 10ft. high ceilings on the main floor, steel stairs capped with marble, a set of

hammered silver metal cupboard doors in the kitchen on motorized hinges, massive sheets of porcelain tile used in the first floor powder room and for the kitchen back splash, and an elaborate walnut accent screen beside the entrace, this house is certainly one of a kind.

Luigi used Linebox Studio architects for the overall design but he was responsible for the interior. “If I had another life, I’d be an architect,” he adds.

Luigi spends much of his spare time reading about local housing matters and experimenting with construction software applications.

Before diving into the home construction field, Luigi worked in the local high tech sector. However, the ups and downs of the industry sent him to the sidelines and he decided to return to housing construction. In the interim, he

married Samar and started a family.

Luigi and his brother, Paolo, took over one of their father’s properties. Instead of renovating it, they decided to raze it and build a new double in its place. That’s when the house-building bug bit them both.

“We fell in love with the process,” Luigi remarks. “We built three more together.”

Since then, Luigi has defined a new role for himself in business. He has carved out a niche as a custom project manager with his company: Kallini Homes Inc. In this role, Luigi helps clients manage the entire building process. “I like to help people realize their dreams,” he says. His two newest projects for clients will start in the fall, a home in Pleasant Park and a duplex in Centretown.

Although his work takes him to other parts of Ottawa, Luigi is a keen supporter of Westboro. ”I love the diversity of this neighbourhood and I love walking through it and seeing the different styles of architecture,” he says.

As he looks to the future, Luigi sees himself continuing in the home building sector. He’d like to continue building modern homes and source the latest and greatest products and finishes. Luigi, however, keenly understands there are some constants that make a home a great home: bright and comfortable spaces, natural light, big windows that open to keep a home fresh and cool, and a home design that you love and makes you smile.

Sitting at the dining room table with the sun streaming in on us, Luigi looks back on what it took to build 608 Byron Avenue. “I am emotionally attached to this house,” he says. “We won’t sell it until I find an equally fantastic site.”

One has to think that despite those reservations, it won’t be too long before Luigi Giammaria finds his next “dream” and starts the process all over again.

Catering is in the works, as is a weekend stall at the Parkdale Market to help generate awareness of their new business. They’ve also been working hard to forge connections with other local companies, sweetening the deal by dropping off croissants as part of their introduction.

As Les Moulins’ twentieth location, the owners are proud that they are able to put their own spin on the operation, rather than just being a cookie-cutter franchise (pun intended). They’ve created a chic, industrial space with décor that keeps the focus on the food and drink.

They’ve also incorporated loads of local touches, including furniture and fixtures from Maker House and Blue Peaches plus handmade espresso cups by local potter Steffi Acevedo. Their beverage menu includes locally made cold pressed juices and kombucha.

he recipe for a successful bakery and coffee shop might read as follows: in a hip neighbourhood, combine three friends with a passion for food. Add in equal parts of energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit and blend well. It’s a tricky formula, but one that has been carefully implemented

by Ghummaz Bhatti, Veda Rajole, and Aditya Budhiraja, co-owners of the new Les Moulins La Fayette which opened at 1000 Wellington St. W. in late June.

The partners say their bakery dreams were launched after tasting an unforgettable almond croissant at a Les Moulins La Fayette location in Montreal.

Founded in 1994 in St. Sauveur by Johnny Jeulin, a fifth generation chocolatier and pastry chef from France, the company boasts eighteen locations in Montreal and one in Miami.

Brewing up brighter futures in Nicaragua

Equator Coffee hosting fundraiser for SchoolBOX

W

hat began in 2006 with the simple act of providing a notebook and pencil to a child in Nicaragua, SchoolBOX’s operations in Central America has percolated to include classrooms, educational packages and a library program.

However, instability in Nicaragua has hindered the organization’s ability to provide services. On Thursday August 16, Equator Coffee is hosting a fundraising screening of the 2015 documentary, Caffeinated, to support SchoolBOX during the crisis.

The Nicaraguan protests began in April as a response to President Daniel Ortega’s changes to social security, which increased taxes and decreased benefits. In the following months, other issues such as a proposed Chinese-backed canal through

“Canada is deeply concerned about reports of several deaths and injuries in the demonstrations that are taking place in Nicaragua,” Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said in April.

SchoolBOX acting Executive Director, Jonathan Tam, says the atmosphere in Nicaragua makes it unsafe for the organization to serve the nearly 20,000 children they assist each year.

Fundraisers like the Caffeinated screening “help SchoolBOX stay alive and continue to empower our employees who have given their life to making education possible for the kids all around

Nicaragua,” says Jonathan. “What we want to do is put ourselves in a position where we can continue our commitment to helping our kids. Only by helping our staff are we able to do that in the near future.”

SchoolBOX works in approximately 110 communities in Nicaragua and during his time in the country, Jonathan helped expand the library program to 75 sites nationwide.

Coffee is the country’s number one agricultural product and many of the classrooms SchoolBOX fund sprout up in the mountainous, java-producing regions.

Nicaraguan beans are one of the components in Equator’s best selling blend “Freakin’ Good Coffee!” and once a year they are highlighted as part of the

brand’s Single Origin Series.

Equator Coffee co-owner and chair of SchoolBOX’s board of directors, Amber Hall, recalls how impressed she was by founder Tom Affleck’s “vision and the model he was creating” when SchoolBOX was in its infancy. The founder worked out of the cafe and his dedication led Equator to collaborate with the fledging organization. Since 2010, Equator donates 10 cents from every pound of their coffee sales to SchoolBOX. The Halls have traveled to Nicaragua on three occasions and Amber says she has a deep love for “the people of Latin America and their incredible resilience and heart.”

Equator has directly funded three classroom builds, with plans for a fourth.

The history of coffee is a rich one, and Amber says she hopes the screening will educate viewers on its history, production, the issues affecting farmers and the culture surrounding the energizing beverage.

Jonathan Tam hopes the screening will inspire the community to learn more about SchoolBOX and the plight affecting Nicaragua.

“We couldn’t have achieved the things that we have done in Nicaragua without the love and support of our donor base and family in Canada. We wouldn’t be able to stay an entity, an ongoing organization without their support, love and confidence.”

The screening of Caffeinated is taking place at Equator Coffee (412 Churchill Ave. N.) on August 16 at 7 p.m. A donation of $25 to SchoolBOX is suggested. A tax receipt will be provided.

There is in our business a term that is used “cosmetic pointing”.

This is when a person puts a bit of mortar over holes in the mortar, brushes it and off he/she goes. The client does not know any better but it looks good. This is not the way pointing gets done. The area that has loose or missing mortar needs to chipped out, at least 1/2 to 3/4 of inch, raked out and then filled with new mortar so that the joints are well packed and keep their integrity. this is more time consuming but a more detailed and long lasting job. Stone pointing is an even more labour intensive process. If the mortar has colour, the mason will need to try and match the colour as close as possible to the old mortar.

piece of Kitchissippi’s past has slipped away with time, so shocking in its tragedy that it is almost unbelievable.

This story has never been written about in any book or blog and has almost been deliberately erased from history. Few who experienced it are still alive, and aside from a few photographs buried in a family album and the depths of the city archives, hardly a trace remains of the Tunney’s Pasture shanty village that existed for 25 years.

In the early 1930s, the north end of Tunney’s along the Ottawa River was far from the scenic parkway and path space it is

today. The rocky shoreline led to an uneven sun-dried field covered largely in bush and scratchy sod, a few trees, and muddy creeks. The land sat undeveloped in its natural state. Various ideas for industrial, residential and government use were proposed.

Meanwhile, the Great Depression, WWII, and a housing shortage crisis in Ottawa made hard times even harder for many families. Neighbourhoods like Mechanicsville and Hintonburg already had significant numbers of residents who struggled to get by, even at the best of times.

The poorest residents of the community fell victim to homelessness, often out of their own control. A lost job, illness, or a greedy landlord could send a family out on the street and there were very few social services to help.

Families who found themselves out of options began congregating at Tunney’s, constructing makeshift homes with found materials. What began as a shortterm summertime solution for the most desperate turned into long-term urban blight, which authorities were unable, or unwilling, to fix.

food, clothes and water when they could. Shockingly, an Ottawa Water Works engineer stepped in when it was discovered that non-taxpaying families of four veterans living in shanties were obtaining eight pails of water each day from nearby houses. Notices were sent to the households ordering them to stop.

Children from Le Port attended local schools and it was known they were very poor. Nuns at the Catholic schools reportedly provided exceptional care and provided breakfast and lunch.

The Fex and Jodoin families were two of the first to arrive in the 1930s, while the Bourguignons, Landrys, Clermonts and Alberts were residents for more than ten years.

The population increased in the late 1940s as veterans returned to their old neighbourhoods to find little vacancy, or at least nothing affordable, and were thus forced to build shanties.

The village also became a temporary home for transients who rode freight trains and jumped off approaching the yard at Bayview (often for fear of being caught).

“Houses” of cardboard, tarpaper, and occasionally framed with wood were built with earthen floors, no electricity, no water, and no sewer. Families with 8-10 children lived in these structures year-round, heated only by a stove in the middle of the room and crudely vented through a wall. Entire families shared one mattress and sometimes kids just slept on the floor. Residents scoured Hintonburg and Wellington Village for anything they could use to improve their home.

Flooding occurred each spring ,and fires – always a threat –could incinerate a house in seconds. At its peak in 1952, “Le Port” as it was nicknamed, had 27 families and well over 100 residents, mostly children. An Ottawa Citizen reporter noted it was “like a visit to another world. A rather unpleasant sort of world” he wrote.

“More than a score of tar paper shanties, some of them pretentious and some of them only bits and pieces of cardboard boxes are constructed in this area.”

Many were built by the river, others in thickets amongst the shrubs to be hidden from view. Sympathetic neighbours in Mechanicsville, some who were barely above poverty themselves, delivered

By the mid-1950s, the Parkway was coming, and the FDC removed the villagers, noting on one eviction notice that “the shack spoils the view from the Champlain Bridge.” Rental housing and social services had improved enough to ease the transition, though for a family like Mathias Bourguignon’s – who lived in a shack for 15 years and saw the birth of four of his eleven children here – it certainly would have been a difficult adjustment.

Living year round in Le Port was about as difficult an existence as one could imagine. Yet, in most of the photos that survive, the residents still appear smiling and happy. “I guess they were happy,” noted descendant Carole Fex-Webster. “They had never really known any different. I think they were good people and very religious.” A true triumph of the spirit in a harsh era that so many years later is almost incomprehensible.

Only one disastrous fire occurred during the lifespan of Le Port. In December 1952, a flash fire tore through a 10’x14’ one-room shack occupied by Fred and Annette Boyer.

Their two-year old daughter Linda didn’t make it out alive.

Over the years, authorities attempted unsuccessfully to have the squatters removed. There simply was nowhere else for them to go. By 1951, the FDC (now NCC) began charging families $10/month to live on the land but residents banded together and refused to pay. The shanties remained in place through the early construction of the government buildings.

3 young activists making a difference in the world (NC) The United Nations International Youth Day is a celebration of the contributions of young people toward social justice, peace and sustainability.

Held on August 12, it is a day to recognize the leading role that youth play in society.

In honour of this day, check out three prominent youth activists who stand out as role models around the world.

Malala Yousafzai. She demonstrated courage and conviction when publicly opposing the Taliban in Pakistan, which eventually lead to a failed assassination attempt on her life at age 15. However, this incident only served to further motivate the

young activist who gained international attention for her continued support of girls’ rights to education. She has now become the world’s youngest Nobel Prize winner, has received Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award, and is an honorary Canadian citizen. Now a freshman at Cambridge University, she continues to balance her studies with activism as a strong international voice for education and children’s rights.

Xiuhtezcatl Martinez. This Indigenous environmentalist and amateur rapper gained prominence for spearheading a lawsuit against the

American federal government over failing to act on climate change. He has given a TED talk on environmentalism, presented in front of the United Nations, and appeared on shows like Real Time with Bill Maher as well as magazines such as Teen Vogue. Through his activism, Martinez has become a leading youth voice for environmental causes.

Parkland shooting survivors. In the wake of the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were tragically killed, a group of students emerged as leaders in the American gun reform debate. They played leadership

roles organizing the “March for Our Lives” demonstrations, which drew crowds of up to two million people across the country.

While the teenagers have succeeded in forcing some amendments to gun laws in Florida, their battle continues on the national stage where they must still advocate for safer gun laws.

Lots of Young Birds and the End of Frog Breeding Season

by Robert Alvo, Conservation Biologist Last time I continued telling you about frogs and birds and how they would be doing in July. You probably noticed many young birds then.

In Ottawa, the most common birds are The Big Three Introduced Species: Rock Pigeons, European Starlings, and House Sparrows. They were introduced from the Old World decades ago and successfully muscled their way into our cities.

Rock Pigeons are pests, pooping and nesting on balconies. European Starlings kick native birds out of their nest holes, while House Sparrows build messy nests on buildings yet provide nice music.

Common native birds in the city include Song Sparrows, on which Ph.D. thesis have been written on their complex songs. Mourning Doves are smaller and more streamlined than Rock Pigeons and are hunted out in the country.

Those large white birds flying over us and picking up food at fast-food joints

are gulls, mostly Ring-billed Gulls. They nest colonially on rocky islets in the Ottawa River between our Twin Cities.

In autumn, they are joined by several other gull species and are best seen on that river and on the two main nearby rivers flowing into it, the Rideau and Gatineau Rivers. In winter, though, when food is scarce in the small portions that remain ice-free, gulls hang out at our stinky garbage dumps where they stay alive feeding on humans’ “Fresh Garbage”, a popular 1960s rock song by the band “Spirit” based on the garbage that “you didn’t quite consume”.

Back to birds, Northern Cardinals sing all year. White-breasted and Redbreasted Nuthatches are better known as “ass-up” birds. Downy, Hairy, and the huge Pileated Woodpeckers drill holes to forage and nest. Black-capped Chickadees, American Goldfinches, Blue Jays (feeder bullies), and the wise American Crows and Common Ravens are also here all year round, as are Mallard ducks. Let’s not forget the American Robin, which loves lawns.

The late-breeding frogs have finished singing. These are the Green Frog, Bullfrog, and one I failed to mention last time — the Mink Frog. Their eggs have hatched and the tadpoles are not in a big rush to develop because they can overwinter for 1-3 years before transforming into froglets, unlike the early-breeding species that are in a big

rush to transform before their shallow ponds dry up. Nevertheless the latebreeders would do well to grow quickly to avoid being eaten by fish, which the early-breeders don’t need to worry about.

Remember the discussion of “strategies” last time?

The Perseid Meteor Shower Nature’s Fireworks

by Mark Narwa Every year during the summer we are treated to a show of nature’s fireworks.

On the night of August 12 into the morning of August 13th, feast your eyes upon the sky to enjoy the Perseid meteor shower. This year is a great year to view them because the shower occurs two days after the New Moon, which means they will not be “washed out” by moonlight.

No experience or optical aids are

required to view a meteor shower. A dark sky with an unobstructed view is all that is needed for best viewing. A slightly light-polluted sky will still allow you to see the bright ones.

The Perseid meteor shower gets it name from the constellation Perseus which is located in the northeastern sky.

All the meteors will appear to come from this one common point in the sky, called the radiant of the shower.

Rosemount Library Users deserve better

There is really nothing new in this report from previous submissions from R.E.A.D.other than to say that the library is getting a $2 million renovation which is ‘merely a Band-Aid solution’.

I have used Rosemount since 1990 and have always found it a welcoming space. Over the years much has changed from computers to self check out and after hours drop boxes. I am at the

library most weeks and have never found it over-crowded with no where to sit not even on Saturdays or in the evenings.

The library board plans to replace the main branch sometime in the future at a cost of $168 million on land already owned by the City of Ottawa, just a short trip from Rosemount.

A replacement library in one of the many high rise buildings going up in Kitchissippi would be a nightmare. I can not think of anywhere else close to Rosemount that would provide enough space that R.E.A.D. thinks is necessary.

Land in the area is very expensive and park space is not readily available in close proximity to the current building.

Why not wait and see what $2 million can achieve and be pleasantly surprised?

Law-abiding citizens are not the only ones out and about taking advantage of the fine weather. While you’re pushing the baby in her carriage, warming a bench with a good book in hand, keeping a coffee business thriving, or on your way to work or yoga, someone else is stealing a bicycle from your porch, cleaning the jewelry out of your bureau drawer or taking the GPS out of your car.

Summer should be a time for relaxing and recharging your batteries, not making a police report or filling out an insurance claim.

What describes the would-be thief?

Desperate, determined, opportunistic, inventive. Anything that isn’t locked up or out of sight is fair game to someone who plays by different rules.

You forgot to put your ladder away?

Excellent access to an upper storey open window. Have you considered having a home security inspection done? In less than an hour you can learn a few good tips that will make your home less attractive to someone who wants to break in. Give me a call at 613-236-1222 ext. 5871 to set that up.

Our vehicles often seem to function like a home away from home. It’s so easy to leave stuff in the car rather than cart it in and out, in and out. If that’s your habit, then you may be a prime target for the would-be thief looking for anything with some kind of resale value, CD’s, GPS’s for example.

Best practice? Everything out of sight or completely removed and your vehicle locked up. In case that’s not enough, you can get an “All Valuables Removed” card to place in your car window. The current City of Ottawa administration is unwilling to adequately fund infrastructure in the urban core despite its advocacy for intensification.

The Rosemount renovation decision is a prime example of the short-sightedness of city officials. READ believes strongly that Ottawa Library Board staff might like to do better but cannot do so.

Before consultations take place, READ encourages Rosemount Library users to consider several issues. What services do they most desire? What is the best use of the space to assure these are provided? Given the limited space, should there be more hours per week to spread services out and meet increased demands? Can some services be provided through partnerships and synergies with other service-providers and locations, such as the Innovation Centre or the Hintonburg Community Centre? Raising these important issues will ensure Rosemount library users receive the services they deserve.

this renovation, the branch will be closed for approximately one year. A “depot” library situated in a store front on Wellington Street will serve our community. The “Renovation” will not provide much needed additional space.

The branch size will remain 6089 square feet.

The Rosemount Expansion and Development (READ) group has nothing but praise for the work done by our

librarians in the local branch. They work in constrained circumstances. But with the population of Kitchissippi swelling to 44,262 at the end of 2017 and continuing to increase over the upcoming years due to intensification and natural growth, meeting the needs of the community in such a small space becomes an issue.

Rosemount Library will continue to be 66 percent smaller than branches in other comparable neighbourhoods. As a result, it cannot provide the programs or the amenities that are available in other branches. Elmvale Acres is a comparably sized branch at 7,493 square feet, but in that space there is seating for 40 users and a meeting room which can hold 59 people. Meeting rooms are a staple at most OPL branches, but Rosemount has no meeting room for its community. A fully functional and accessible program room is a must-have and the renovation must provide for one.

A modern library must provide sufficient space and services to adequately respond to the community, not just for the present generations but the future ones. In READ’s view, the $2 million allocated for Rosemount is

Hot slides and cool basements

by Anna Borris Once the novelty of summer vacation faded, the weather had the boiling humidity of a rain forest and the light was a constant sharp glare. The soft green landscape of spring had baked into golden dryness and the lawns were looking like shredded wheat biscuits before they went over Niagara Falls.

Our moms were all the same. As soon as they noticed a few kids gathering in the house, they would yell, “Get out and play, it’s a nice sunny day.” They wanted us out of their hair so they could get on with their day, making jam and pickles in the steamy kitchen, and starting dinner. We were happy to oblige, and made sure we were out of sight in case our mothers thought to make us weed the garden or cut the grass.

A favourite pastime was to sit on our flat garage roof with the hose pointed up to the sky. When someone walked by we gave them a little

sprinkle. They would look up, mystified, then figure out where it came from and bark at us. That quickly turned into a water fight with everyone battling for control of the hose. Then the next obvious thing to do was to put on our bathing suits and run screaming through the sprinkler, giving the parched lawn a much-needed drink.

In a couple of hours we were starving. If we happened to be at my house, my mom would bring a tray of sandwiches, (a choice of peanut butter or bologna) and a pitcher of lemonade or Freshie out to the backyard. We loved having a picnic, never realizing every mom’s secret motive was to keep the kids out of the house. Another favourite lunch event was to wrap the sandwiches up and bring a thermos of cold lemonade to the park, climb a tree and have lunch sitting on the branches.

We loved the old high wooden slide with the stairs worn from

thousands of feet climbing to the top. Of course the first person to slide down forgot how hot the metal could be in the sun. After they let out a screech of pain, the rest of us slid down on our backs with our shirts to protect us. After a turn on the swings, sailing as high as they would go, we collapsed under the trees to observe the clouds and cool off before heading home.

The neighbourhood pool was only two or three feet deep and usually filled with spashing, fighting little kids, so for five cents the Plant Bath was a better option if we felt like taking the bus down Somerset Street.

The library was always a cool attraction. Some days we would bike over and spend an hour browsing

through the stacks and picking out a few books to bring home for a rainy day.

Judy’s mom usually didn’t mind us playing records in their basement.

We loved Connie Francis and Lesley Gore, but the boys said they were too “sappy” so they brought over a few reocrds of their own.

They liked the old Johnny Horton songs like “North to Alaska” and “The Battle of New Orleans”, and almost anything by Johnny Cash was also a favourite. We played them all with no objection; the basement was cool and it was another fun way to spend a hot afternoon indoors but still just out of the reach of a scolding mom or an outside job assignment.

Under a dark sky you can expect to see between 80 to 110 meteors per hour. Usually, the Perseid meteors tend to appear white or bluish white. They will be traveling at speeds of up to 200,000 km/h, producing many bright meteors that leave luminous trails visible for several seconds.

The Perseid meteor shower is associated with the comet 109P/ Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered

by American astronomers Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle in July 1862.

Each year when the Earth crosses Swift-Tuttle’s orbit, tiny particles of dust and rock left behind by the comet enter the Earth’s atmosphere,

creating the streaks of light that cause the Perseid meteor shower. When these particles of dust and rock are floating in space they are called meteoroids, but when they burn up in the atmosphere they become meteors.

If they should survive the burn up and land on the Earth’s surface they are called meteorites.

The best way to watch the meteor shower is to lie back using a sleeping bag or a reclining lawn chair and watch the open sky. It does not matter which direction you face because the meteors will streak across the entire sky. Dressing appropriately and having an extra blanket is a good idea because it tends to get chilly, especially when you are staying idle and the dew falls. It is also good to have some insect repellent.

Salsa is soothing for a baby, since the rocking movements bring them back to the time they spent in utero.

BABY-WEARING LATIN DANCE Moms and dads get fit with their babies by learning fun steps to the rhythmic beats of Salsa and other Latin dances such as Merengue, Rumba, Cumbia and Bachata. You don’t even need to know how to dance; the desire to share a special moment of music and movement with your child is all you need. Salsa is soothing for a baby, since the rocking movements bring them back to the time they spent in utero.

Your baby will love being swayed while in direct contact with you! We recommend that your child be at least 6–8 weeks old. Parents must provide their own baby carrier.

WHAT IS BSOMA?

The Bluesfest School of Music and Art emerged as a partnership between RBC Ottawa Bluesfest and Dovercourt Recreation.

Housed in Bluesfest’s Festival House, BSOMA brings art and music educators to the community through group programming, private lessons and special events, all of which are available to learners of all ages and abilities.

AQUATIC EXERCISE PROGRAMS AQUA This shallow water class focuses on correct form and technique, and uses the resistive properties of water to achieve a full body workout that will improve cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. All levels are welcome!

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS FOR ACTIVE AGING Functional fitness trains your bodily systems to work together to improve one’s ability to perform daily tasks and remain active for life. This specialized fitness program is designed to improve strength and mobility in adults as they go through the aging process and addresses the fitness components affected by age such as strength, flexibility, balance and posture.

Improvements in functional fitness help active agers maintain independence by improving the body’s physical capabilities. This program is held in our functional fitness room and participants will have the opportunity to train with premium equipment in a small group format.
