Culinary features are a key component this year. There will be a competition on the main stage, and some restaurants and bars will have FUSE-inspired menu items and drinks. The programming is confirmed, 200 businesses are lined up to swing open their doors and part – not all – of Richmond Road will be closed. The Kitchissippi Times caught up with MaryAnne Petrella just days ahead of the official launch announcement on August 10. MaryAnne manages CIEL and Canopy, and is a member of the Westboro Village BIA Board of Directors and the FUSE event task force. “I think this year is really a standout, above and beyond from years past, because it’s bringing together all of the merchants and

“ChampagneCharcuterieChardonnay” event under the chandelier as a “can’t miss.” Sunday will feature a pancake breakfast and pig roast. There will also be a farmer’s market. Throughout the weekend, there will be many signature snacks to choose from, everything from gelato by CoCoCo Chocolates to official Westboro FUSE peaches and cream cupcakes from the Cupcake Lounge. Urban art also plays an important role this year. Local urban artist, Robbie Lariviere, has joined as director of “Artcatel” to organize art pop-ups, muralists, and workshops at FUSE. Highly recognized as one of Ottawa’s leading artists and influencers, Robbie’s work is featured on major brands downtown. To bring a little vintage to the festival, Legend Records will host a pop-up where people can buy, swap and sell vinyl records. Adding to the beat, will be tribal drummers from rooftops and a series of music jams on the street level. The festival is family friendly, with plenty of spaces specifically for the kids. Frontline Credit Financial, The Village Quire, West-End Kids, Napoli’s Pizza, and Alterna have gotten together to create an “unbirthday” themed

and decorated space where children will receive party hats, treats, pizza, and swag bags. Otto’s will host a climbing wall, and Dovercourt will be providing an everpopular bouncy castle and community stage among the many stations. Holy Hot Yoga is one of the event’s most creative activities at All Saints Anglican/First United Church. MaryAnne says the committee has been very pleased with the work of this year’s producer, Catherine Landry. “She has done an amazing job to get everyone excited and come together to ignite the street,” says MaryAnne. “The amount of programming is exceptional, and I think people really feel that grassroots spirit this year.”

“We’re proud of our membership for coming out and wanting to be involved.” This year there is also a charitable component to the event, with proceeds going to the Westboro Regional Food Bank. There will be several ways for

attendees to support the food bank, including an art auction and a corn roast by Farm Boy and Dovercourt. Regarding street closures, Richmond Road between McRae Avenue and Churchill Avenue will be closed to traffic during FUSE, along with the stretch between Roosevelt Avenue and Golden. Churchill Avenue to Roosevelt Avenue will remain open to traffic. Ground floor shops will have the opportunity to set up on the sidewalk and in the parking lane, creating a funnel for FUSE attendees. All areas are open to four-legged friends, provided they are on a leash.

If you’re peddling down to FUSE, look for valet parking at Bushtukah. They’re also hosting a tot trot and family 1km run. The organizers are hoping to appeal to a wide audience by engaging people who live in the area to learn a bit more about their own community – but also to draw people in from the rest of Ottawa. “We want to put Westboro on the map to showcase some of the interesting, distinctive elements of our district,” says MaryAnne. Westboro FUSE takes place August 26-27. Full details are available at westborofuse.com.

Can you find all of the images and symbols that were incorporated into the Winston Chandelier? Photo by Andrea Tomkins

Deconstructing the Winston Chandelier the gourmet market, or a glass of craft beer, make sure you look up… at the Winston Chandelier! This unofficial coat of arms for Westboro depicts the flora and fauna of the area and

was officially launched earlier this summer at a special event attended by members of the Westboro Village BIA, local merchants, and artists Joanna Swim and Adrian Göllner.

See if you can find the following images and symbols in the chandelier:

2. Spotted Turtle: Did you know that Spotted Turtles are endangered? If you’re lucky, you may spot one near Westboro Beach.

4. Curls represent the wind on the water. 5. White Pine: Logging played an important role in the history of Westboro and it’s symbolized by the White Pine tree.

7. Mountain Ash: Mature trees are one of Westboro’s best features. Not only do they provide shade and shelter, but the Mountain Ash is also an important food source for overwintering birds.

9. The crown and poppy honour the Royal Canadian Legion and its members. The Legion, after all, is right next door to Winston Square. More details about this unique street art are inscribed on a plaque at Winston Square. Take a closer look the next time you’re there! The original owners of the house were apparently the Fentiman family, who also owned and operated a sawmill in the Westboro area. They took occupancy of 487 Edison Avenue in 1942. Their sawmill was the source for the wood siding used to cover the exterior of the house and what gives the dwelling a rustic cottage appearance despite its modern urban setting, just off Churchill Avenue in Westboro. After only two or three years, the home was sold to a Dr. Webster and his wife, who remained the owners until the Finkelsteins bought it from Mrs. Webster’s estate in 1999. In 75 years, the home has had only three owners. How Max and Connie came to own the property is a story in itself. The couple might have never made the acquisition if it wasn’t for a simple twist of fate. Continued on page 6

“Actually, it was the garage that sold me on the house,” says Max Finklestein, recalling when he and his wife, Connie Downes, purchased their home at the corner of Edison and Kenwood Avenue in April 1999. The long wooden garage is a separate building that sits on the east side of the property. Max is a renowned canoeist, river conservationist, author and lecturer, and knew at a glance that it would make a perfect storage area for several of his specialized canoes and kayaks. Max is a retired Communications Officer for the Canadian Heritage Rivers System, Canada’s national river conservation program, or as his colleagues most often called him: the Rivers Guy. Continued from page 5 “A friend of ours knew we were looking for a house and also knew the executor of the estate,” explained Connie as she poured generous glasses of home made lemonade at their kitchen table one recent summer evening. Their scruffy little Norfolk terrier, Matzo Ball, observed the goings on with casual interest. Sarah, the couples’ black border collie/retriever mix, has a slight aversion to strangers and kept mostly to herself in another part of the house. the street. Having done so, the couple conducted their own personal inspection. The first impression was a memorable one. “I always remember looking in the front door, seeing a curved wall and a hall cupboard next to it with red velvet drapes,” says Connie. To their surprise, their inspection also revealed a self- contained apartment on the second floor. Access to the apartment was via a covered staircase on the exterior at the rear of the house. Connie and Max were smitten by the home’s rustic exterior and more formal interior and promptly informed the executor they were interested in making a purchase. You can imagine their dismay when the executor apologized and revealed that a member of the family had since decided to buy the property. Disappointed, the couple departed on a planned two-week vacation with visions of what could have been their new home fresh in their minds. When they returned to Ottawa, a surprise was waiting for them on their answering machine – the twist of fate. The executor had called back. The deal with the family member had fallen through and the couple was invited to submit an offer, which they promptly did, and soon became the new owners of the dwelling that was to be there

home for the next 18 years – and counting. For the first few years of their occupancy, Connie, Max and son Isaac, born the year the couple bought the house, lived downstairs and rented out the upstairs apartment. Despite its obvious charm and craftsmanship, their new home needed renovations. After a few years, the couple embarked on a number of improvements, which included a new kitchen, a new main bathroom, more bedrooms (including a proper one for Isaac since he had been up to that point sleeping in a cupboard!) and remodeling what had been the upstairs apartment to make it part of the dwelling. With all the changes, and there have been many, the couple has been careful to choose materials and finishes that align with the age and design of the house. That included keeping a mid- century Beach stove, which at times can be quirky, but still sits proudly in all its white enamel and chrome glory at centre stage in the kitchen. Visitors are often taken aback when they are invited to use a midcentury wall-mounted rotary dial telephone in the kitchen. “Isaac’s friends have never seen a phone like that,” laughs Connie. “They’re not sure how to use it and they also say it hurts their fingers when they try to dial.”

Green wooden shutters still grace all of the windows of 487 Edison. Two mid-century bathrooms, including one in the finished basement with pink tile and fixtures were retained, the only change being a new ceramic floor in the main floor bathroom. Through it all, Max says, their priority was to maintain the original footprint of the structure and not change anything on the exterior. For all intents and purposes, except for the removal of the covered staircase to the second floor and darkening of the wood siding, the exterior of their home remains the same as it was in 1942. Today, 75 years after it was built, the home reminds all who walk by of a simpler, more authentic time and place. It was a time when craftsmen took the time and patience to build structures that would stand the test of time and remain a legacy to their talent and skill. It is thanks to people like Max and Connie, that precious structures like 487 Edison are still with us, and most importantly, they remind us of the origins of the Westboro community.

The last few spring and summer months have seen several new businesses sprout up in Wellington Village and Hintonburg. If you’re in the market for a meal, a new hobby, or a haircut, there’s almost certainly something fresh and exciting to discover in the neighbourhood. In our June 8 issue, the Kitchissippi Times profiled Nu Grocery, a new zero-waste bulk grocery store at 1130 Wellington St. W. — the first of its kind in Ottawa. That store is now open for business after a soft opening on August 12. “It went super well. We had a lot of people coming in,” says owner Valérie Leloup. “I hope [the business] will be the success that I expect.” Nu Grocery will be filling their shelves with produce and dairy products in time for a grand opening on August 19. Reducing waste is not just a one-off theme with new businesses this summer. One new restaurant, The Bowl, (83 Holland Ave.), is so dedicated to the idea that it has honed its efforts and resources into one efficient meal option, also called The Bowl. “We’re really trying to have a small footprint in an industry that tends to

It also being Canada’s 150th birthday, this is a big year for Ottawa, and Zachary adds that he hopes tourists and residents from across the city will come by and rediscover the charms of Wellington Village and Hintonburg. One of the earliest events for this year’s Tastes will be a morning yoga session, hosted by PranaShanti Yoga. There may still be a few weeks left in August, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to look forward to Tastes of Wellington West, one of the neighbourhood’s signature end-of-summer event. The festival, which is hosted by the Wellington West BIA, celebrates its ninth iteration on September 16. The daylong event is meant as a way to showcase the many small businesses, shops, and restaurants in the neighbourhood. According to Zachary Dayler, the Executive Director of the Wellington West BIA, it’s also an opportunity for businesses to connect with residents — “to give back, to say thanks

It’s an opportunity for businesses to connect with residents — to give back, to say thanks... Additionally, Ottawabased speed-painter, Allan André, will paint a canvas live on the street. This year’s festival will also have some treats for local craft beer enthusiasts. In a new event this year, Parkdale Park will be home to a brewery market for the day. Additionally, a bus from brewery touring company, Brew Donkey, will be on hand to highlight the area’s many craft beer venues. This year’s Tastes will also mark the return of the popular “window scrabble” game. In the week leading up to festival day, stores and businesses across the community will display words in their windows, which can then be filled into a downloadable game card and entered into a draw for gift cards that can be spent around Wellington West. More information about Tastes of Wellington West can be found online at wellingtonwest.ca.

Rescuing food, helping neighbours Local initiative attempts to address the issue of food waste By Bradley Turcotte

Winston Avenue resident and recent Algonquin College graduate Rachael Martin’s concept to address the issues of food waste and affordability, is in the running for the top prize of the Amazing 50 Innovation Fund as Ontario Colleges celebrate their 50th anniversary. The mandate of the Unearthed Café is to rescue undesirable and nearly expired food from local grocery stores and transform the items into healthy, affordable meals. The Café would have pay-what-youcan-items in addition to a suspended menu, where those who can afford to can purchase items for those who cannot. Close to half of all food produced worldwide is wasted, according to The David Suzuki Foundation, and about 20 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions come from landfills. Rachael’s dream is to open a brick and mortar café in

Wellington Village or Hintonburg but for now she’s aiming for a pilot pop up event in Somerset Square where the diners would be a mix of residents in need and paying customers. Securing a food truck for the initial

event is her greatest hurdle, Rachael admits. While growing up on a farm in Maine, Rachael reminisces that her family did their part to lessen waste by necessity. “I didn’t really realise that

what we were doing was rescuing food – produce from grocery stores we would use for the farm animals,” Rachael explains, adding that her family would consume the freshest produce that didn’t go to the cows and pigs. Rachael saw firsthand how resources can be squandered while volunteering at the Parkdale Food Centre. She noticed produce go to waste, even with the centre’s best intentions. Some produce that couldn’t be sorted in time, for example, ended up in the compost. “It was frustrating to see,” says Rachael. The first round of voting for the Innovation Fund prize is complete and the winners of this round will be announced August 31. The grand prize winner will be announced in November. First place nets $15,000, although Rachael estimates her fully formed vision would cost close to $100,000. As a business management and entrepreneurship student,

Rachael developed her concept with help from Algonquin’s Summit Intensive and received $3000 in seed money. From the farm to the distribution centres and finally ending with careless consumers, Rachael hopes her concept will remind Canadians to be cognisant of how they store their food and how much they throw away. “I think it’s a real problem, seeing the statistics that 40 per cent of the food that is produced in Canada is wasted. There’s a lot of water and time that goes into growing this food and then it’s just in the compost. On the other end, there’s people who struggle to put food on the table every day. There’s two problems with food insecurity and food waste. Why not have them solve each other?” For progress on the project, visit unearthedcafe. com or follow the café on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at @unearthedcafe.

Kitchissippi Times: Can you start by giving us a bit of background about yourself? Clare Grosskleg: My name is Clare Grosskleg and I volunteer with a new registered charity to establish a nature and food-focused educational and activity centre along with teaching gardens. I became interested in monarchs after reading an article. I was surprised to learn that monarch butterflies are now an at-risk species. I wanted to see what I could do to help so I reached out to a local school. With their support and enthusiasm, I am working with them to create a monarch garden in the adjacent

city park. In addition to welcoming monarchs and other pollinators, the garden will enhance school curriculum and add an element of experiential learning. Why is the issue of monarch habitat so important to you? CG: As monarch habitat disappears, monarchs disappear. These butterflies are in such serious decline, that they are now at risk of disappearing from the planet. It is now more important than ever to bring public awareness to their cause. When is the last time you saw a monarch butterfly? There are fewer and fewer. And how sad it would be to lose these beautiful butterflies and valuable pollinators. How are you trying to help the monarchs here in Kitchissippi? CG: Anyone can make a difference by encouraging people to plant monarch gardens at their homes, in their neighbourhoods, in their school yards. As well, businesses and organizations can include host and nectar plants in their landscaped gardens. If not a garden, then just a pollinator patch that includes milkweed. It’s a small effort that can make a big difference to this at-risk species.

At a recent social services networking event at the Dovercourt Recreation Centre, I met many good folks, including Catherine Casserly of the Westboro Beach Community Association. Catherine created a lovely neighbourhood garden that not only welcomes monarchs and other pollinators, but also provides community members with a location to pause, visit neighbourhood friends and enjoy the garden. This year, several people in the neighbourhood started to plant bright flowers in their gardens. The flowers tend to be perennials or selfseeding, so once established, there is not too much work to do. We can even make seeds available. The NCC is joining in by allowing the community to begin work on a meadow called Selby Plains, the lovely open field at the end of Churchill Avenue. That project will get underway in the spring when we have more plants to transplant. Churchill Seniors Centre is also intending to come on board next year, once their renovations are complete. Our biggest challenge is getting milkweeds established without allowing them to take over. This year, there

are many beginning to grow both on the Selby Plains and in the meadow just west of Maplelawn. It will be lovely to see the return of the monarch butterflies and welcome new types of butterflies as well. And the great thing is, it does not even have to cost money to contribute to this goal and anyone of any gardening ability can do it.

What can Kitchissippi residents do to help? CG: Start your own monarch garden or add a pollinator patch (including milkweed) and encourage others to do the same! It is getting a little late for planting, but it’s the perfect time to think about swapping seeds with neighbours. If you want to know more about monarch butterflies and how to

surprised to see their agent has inserted an additional condition beyond the usual financing and inspection provisions. This condition, involving a review of a status certificate and associated condominium documents, is extremely important for a variety of reasons. First, the status certificate documents will provide the buyer with financial information on the condominium. This often includes a budget, financial statements, and a reserve fund study (which shows the long-term plan for repairing and replacing certain items, such as the roof of the building or the asphalt in the parking garage). Reviewing this information can provide insight Jason Peyman on the financial health of the condominium, which is crucial since increases in fees or special Lawyer assessments (which is when the condominium does not have enough funds to cover its expenses and seeks an additional payment from its owners beyond the monthly condominium fees) can cause a burden on the buyer if they decide to become an owner. Therefore, if there are red flags Mann Lawyers in these documents and they are identified during the conditional period, the buyer still has an 1600 Scott St, Ottawa opportunity to back out of the purchase or at least negotiate with the seller (e.g. a reduction in Suite 710, price) to hopefully mitigate some of the issues discovered in the status certificate package. 613.722.1500 Second, there will also be documents outlining the rules of the condominium (i.e. the mannlawyers.com declaration, the by-laws, regulations, etc…). Examining these items during the conditional period is prudent since there could be restrictions on the use of the unit, such as the building not allowing smoking or prohibiting pets. Therefore, if there were rules that the buyer found problematic, they would then be aware of them during the conditional period and could decide whether to fulfill their status condition or not. Lastly, if the buyer is obtaining financing, their lender will insist that they receive a “clean” Injured in a car status certificate before advancing your funds. way to condos and infills, and many stores are trendy boutiques. Amid all this change, Taiga remains a welcoming oasis of affordable housing. As a non-profit housing society, about 75% of Taiga’s 104 units are occupied by tenants in the rent- geared-to-income (RGI) system. Under this system, tenants pay about 30% of their gross monthly income as rent, and a subsidy paid directly to the non-profit by the City of Ottawa makes up the difference between the rent paid by the tenant and the market rent of the unit. The Social Housing Registry of Ottawa maintains the central waiting list for people applying for RGI. Taiga has a mix of two- and three-bedroom units, and some units are fitted to accommodate disabled tenants. It is a well-maintained apartment complex that is close to downtown and transit, and most amenities are within a short walking distance. The complex has a mix of senior residents and young families. Most tenants tend to stay for long periods of time, and there is a strong sense of community in the complex; for instance, tenant volunteers help with the gardening in the common areas. Tenants like Margaret Jamison-Guitard can speak to the benefits of living at Taiga. Margaret has lived here for 12 years and her son Connor was raised here. She values the convenience of having been able to walk to work and school: she worked as an Early Childhood Educator at Hilson Avenue Public School, and Connor went to St. Georges Catholic School. She says she has always felt safe in Taiga and in the surrounding areas, and says that she has always been able to rely on her neighbours in the complex for help whenever she needed it. Margaret enjoys the view from her balcony, and she loves that the beach is a

stone’s throw away. Connor, now 22, is thinking of getting his own apartment in the complex. Margaret has seen firsthand how demographics have changed in the area. She describes Westboro residents as being from “both ends of the scale,” those who can afford to spend time at a café sipping lattes, and those who have to rely on a food bank. Janet Timpson, who uses a wheelchair, echoes Margaret’s sentiments. She has lived at Taiga for 22 years, in the area for 44 years, and her father lives close by. She points out that there are homes, not far from Taiga, that sell for a million dollars, while many Taiga tenants rely on RGI. Nonetheless, “I like living here,” she says. “It’s close to everything.” Daniel Moonogian, the President of the Board of Directors at Taiga, says that the composition of the city has changed, and lower-income people are being pushed out of the neighbourhood. He believes that the City of Ottawa’s support for Taiga and similar housing projects needs to be bolstered by the involvement of the larger community. This is crucial to plan and build capacity for affordable housing in

general, not just RGI housing. He says that it is important to invest in non-profit options like Taiga, which usually don’t have public engagement in the same way that say, a new condo development does. The Board of Directors at Taiga is comprised of seven directors, all volunteers. They are involved with the non-profit housing sector in their day jobs, and have experience in governance as well. An Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the fall, and Daniel is hoping for similarly experienced people from the local community to volunteer their services. According to the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association, “Safe, suitable, adequate and affordable housing is a basic human right and essential to the vitality and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities across Ontario.” By all accounts, Taiga seems to exemplify that statement. Taiga Non-Profit Housing Corporation is currently seeking qualified candidates for their volunteer Board of Directors. For more information, see the web version of this story at kitchissippi.com.

WELCOME TO DOVERCOURT’S FALL 2017 PROGRAMS! Dovercourt Recreation Association (DRA) is a not-for-profit charitable organization with the mission of building a healthy, active and engaged community through recreation. While we are part of the City of Ottawa’s recreation system, DRA is empowered to choose what programs it runs to meet the community’s needs, and how those programs are delivered. Our motto is “a community working for the community, une communauté qui travaille pour la communauté”. Staff, volunteers, clients, local community groups and businesses working together…that’s Dovercourt!

SWIM LESSONS Why take swimming lessons at Dovercourt? Dovercourt’s highly-skilled instructors are able to teach children proper technique efficiently and effectively, in accordance with the high standards of the Lifesaving Society. Our end-ofsession Survival Day is unique to Dovercourt and is a fun yet powerful way to teach children skills that could save their lives in real-life scenarios. Our staff undergoes extensive training and regular updates on safety, rescue situations, changes to current standards, as well as techniques for teaching. Many of our senior aquatics staff are instructor and lifeguard trainers and are a valuable resource for our aquatics team. Our leisure pool is designed to teach swimming, with unique features like warmer water, a beach entry, rope swing and shallow & deep water pods. We are proud of the quality of our swim lesson program at Dovercourt! Read more on our website: www.dovercourt.org/ enterprise/OurPool_Whatsdifferent
