The Great Wine Capitals Global Network is proud to present the 2010 winners of the Best Of Wine Tourism contest, properties and wine tourism operators that have received a prize for their quality and innovativeness in welcoming visitors. The “Best Of Wine Tourismâ€? awards were created by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network in 2004 to recognize excellence and encourage wider participation in wine tourism initiatives in the cities and wine regions of the Network. Since the first edition, 250 national and 55 international awards have honoured wineries, hotels, restaurants, museums, and other wine tourism-related businesses. The awards are given in the categories of Accommodation, Architecture, Parks and Gardens, Art and Culture, Innovative Experiences in Wine Tourism, Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices, Restaurants and Wine Tourism Services. A local contest takes place in each member city and region, with winners on the national level competing on the international level and being awarded during the annual general meeting of the Network. Today, these awards are a benchmark for industry excellence. Best Of Wine Tourism 8 of the member cities of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network (Bilbao I Rioja, Bordeaux, Cape Town, Florence, Mainz I Rheinhessen, Mendoza, Porto, San Francisco I Nappa Valley) are pleased to present the 2010 selection of the most original, innovative vine and wine sites for visitors. Christchurch I South Island joined the Network late 2009 and will organize the contest next year. An international panel of experts examined applications from each of the wine regions in the Network, in seven categories covering the whole spectrum of wine tourism: • Architecture, parks and gardens, • Art and culture, • Innovative wine tourism experiences, • Accommodation, • Wine tourism services, • Sustainable wine tourism practices, • Wine tourism restaurants. The winners of the competition are listed in this guide, and guarantee visitors: • a genuine, top-quality reception, • an original, innovative way of discovering the local heritage, • a range of services to meet the strictest requirements.

ilbao, the most important city in northern Spain, is

located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. It is today
a rich and vibrant city, with important cultural spaces such as the Guggenheim Museum, and the gleaming, arched footbridge, the Pasarela de Uribitarte, designed by Spaniard Santiago Calatrava. It is also the gateway to the Rioja wine region, with its centuries old traditions and rich and varied regional cuisine. The architectural treasures of Bilbao - where even the metro system has been designed by Sir Norman Foster, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize has carried over into its neighbouring wine district, and the stunning scenery of Rioja is contrasted with an ever growing number of startling, excitingly designed wineries, cellars and welcome centres.

INNOVATIVE WINE TOURISM EXPERIENCES
Bodegas Muga was one of the first wineries in Rioja to open its doors to tourists. The attractive stone and wood building dates back from two centuries, and provides visitors with a quality learning experience about the wine, and the wider context in which it is made. The cellars also contain their own cooperage, allowing visitors to learn about the process of barrel making, so central to the Muga style of wine.

Also known as CVNE, this company owns three ground-breaking estates in Rioja; Viña Real, CVNE and Contino. The CVNE cellar was built in the 19th century. The buildings have been conserved and have recently suffered a restoration which combines modernity with classicism. One of the most striking parts of the buildings is an ageing cellar built after Gustave Eiffel style.

ART AND CULTURE
The Finca is a beautiful chateau-style winery located in Rioja Alta, owned by the Martínez Bujanda family that has roots in Rioja dating back to 1889. They have created a wine museum explaining the culture and techniques used in Rioja over the past centuries. The winery also has a renowned private art collection, and offers extensive facilities for holding exhibitions and other cultural events, from a traditional 19th century cellar to modern spaces.

The Remenetxe restaurant in Bilbao is well regarded for its international wine list and its relaxed and straight-forward approach to teaching wine culture to its customers. Housed in a traditional 19th century farmhouse, converted in 1986 but retaining its rustic stone walls and wooden beams, there are over 600 wines on the list from Rioja, Spain and further afield.

the Pyrénées mountains, the Unesco World Heritage city of Bordeaux is one of the most revered names in the world of wine, with over 2,000 years of wine making history and a wealth of technical expertise. This is one of the best known chateaux of the Pessac Leognan appellation. The owner, Bernard Magrez has invested heavily not only in the winemaking, but also in restoring the château and winery. The "Orangerie", the “Barrel Cellar”, and the “Pavillon du Prelat” offer spaces for the staging of both personal and professional events, with a team fully on hand to organize everything from catering to logistics. Luxury wine tastings are also on offer, as are tours around Magrez’s other Bordeaux vineyards. 6

This Medoc château manages to continually innovate, evidenced by photography collections in the winery, and a permanent display of thought-provoking works by international artists in the "Garden of Sculptures". The château building is a clever combination of classic lines that date back to the 12th century and startling modern touches, from the transparent roof to the immense "Diagonale" d’Arsac, all conceived by owner Philippe Raoux, Bordeaux architect Patrick Hernandez and sculptor Bernar Venet.

One of the largest estates in Pomerol; the de Lambert family has been making wine here for five hundred years.The graceful château dates back from 16th century, and covers 47 hectares, all farmed by sustainable agriculture. One of the few classically proportioned chateaux in Pomerol, de Sales has a long sweeping driveway lined by plane trees, and large gardens that surround the chateau with the unusual feature of numerous bamboo plants. This award given to a Philippe Raoux venture is well deserved for its combination of architecture, art and wine; this time in the creation of a 1,000 m2 wine boutique and cultural centre. The large outside terrace offers a perfect setting for this lovely restaurant, located in the Trebbio Castle. The castle was built as a small fortress in 1184 by the Pazzi Family, and passed into the hands of the present owners in 1968. Extensive renovations were carried out, and a restaurant, La Sosta del Gusto, was opened in 2006. Run by a MaitreSommelier, it is renowned for its excellent seasonal menus, and its imaginative and far-reaching wine list. 6

Located on the southwest slopes of Chianti hills, the stunning natural setting is perfectly in harmony with the owners’ philosophy of respecting the land. The vineyard is fully certified organic, and without the use of copper as an anti-fungus. In the winemaking, no selected yeasts are used, and the smallest possible amount of sulphur dioxide. The Castle of Verrazzano is located on a hilltop in the Chianti Classico area, in stunning scenery and with an imposing architecture that makes it one of the region’s most striking places. The Hemmes family, innovative owners of a wine estate in Bingen-Kempten, has extended the idea of sustainability from vineyards to the local environment. They have restored a former schoolhouse, a listed historic building, in the heart of the village, and converted it into a wine school with tasting rooms, a professional kitchen, and areas for presentations, readings or celebrations.
