SUSTAINABLE WINE TOURISM PRACTICES

The Hemmes family, innovative owners of a wine estate in Bingen-Kempten, has extended the idea of sustainability from vineyards to the local environment. They have restored a former schoolhouse, a listed historic building, in the heart of the village, and converted it into a wine school with tasting rooms, a professional kitchen, and areas for presentations, readings or celebrations. Not only has this preserved a key piece of history, but energy is supplied to the building by geothermal heat.

ART AND CULTURE

The ‘cow chapels’ are a very special feature of architectural history in Rheinhessen - built in the middle of the 19th century in monastic refectory style. Today they are used as wine tasting parlours, sales rooms and wine taverns. Since 1999 regular cultural and culinary events have been established by 43 vault owners and members of the Rheinhessen Wine Vaults Syndicate who are engaged in cultivating this architectural cultural heritage and unique feature of Rheinhessen.

historic centre of Porto glow in the evening sunshine, as the buildings look over to the historic Porto wine cellars on the bank of the Douro river, where the major port houses have their warehouses, many offering fascinating visitor centres for the wine tourist. This is a romantic and beautiful city to explore, and just an hour from the stunning Douro Valley, where steep terraces of vines form some of the most spectacular landscape in the world. These vines make the Touriga grapes to be transformed into port and increasingly into a rich still red wine. west coast. From the Golden Gate bridge to Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco is one of the world’s most loved cities, and provides the perfect stepping stone to one of its most loved wine regions - the Napa Valley. The backbone of the Napa Valley is Highway 29, but the area encompasses eight main regions, including St-Helena, Calistoga, Yountville and Napa, all with a myriad of wineries to explore - and with a history of welcoming visitors that stretches back to the late 1800s, making it the world’s first wine region to really embrace wine tourism. Today, the Napa Valley welcomes over 4.5 million visitors per year, drawn by the climate, the quality of the wines and the breadth of activities offered, from art galleries, to fine dining or to its many tasting room experiences.
