HE WAS THE MOST FAMOUS AND FLAMBOYANT GREEK OF MODERN TIMES. TODAY, THE INSTITUTION THAT BEARS HIS NAME OFFERS SOCIETY MANY OF THE THINGS THAT LIFE HAD SO GENEROUSLY OFFERED HIM.

Α ristotle Onassis passed away at the Hôpital Américain de Paris on March 15, 1975. Born in 1906, he left a distinct mark on his rov ing life, both professionally and privately. The Asia Minor catastrophe was a major event in his life that jumpstarted his adventures as, in 1922, he was forced to leave his hometown of Smyrna with his family, bound initially for Greece, and after that for Argentina. In Buenos Aires at first, he involved himself in the tobacco trade, and then in shipping. In 1936, he bought his first tanker, and within a few years had managed to become the “king of oil tankers”. He acquired social prestige through his "golden" marriage to the daughter of the established shipowner Stavros Livanos. He and his wife Tina had two children together: Alex ander and Christina. In the 1950s, he bought a 99 metre anti submarine frigate from the Ca nadian fleet for just $34,000, then transformed it into the most luxurious yacht of the era: The Christina would drop anchor at Port Hercule in Monaco, the city that had by then become home to his new business headquarters. He maintained a close friendship with the prince of Monaco, and it is rumored that it was his idea for the prince to marry Hollywood actress Grace Kelly so that the tourist resort which had been abandoned by the jet set after the war would regain its former glory. Onassis would later return to Athens to set up his own airline company, Olympic Airways. Athens is where he felt truly at home. Beyond the many French and English nannies, he was particularly interested in ensuring that his children received a Greek upbringing. In contrast to the public image he so artfully cultivated to focus mainly on his business successes, Aristotle Onassis was a deeply educated man. His sister, Cal lirrhoe, would confess to me in an interview on the twentieth anniversary of his death: "He spoke five languages fluently and had a pas sion for Greek mythology. He identified with Odysseus in cunning and Hercules in power". Αristotle Onassis with his son Alexander at Athens’ international airport.

"He spoke five languages fluently and had a passion for Greek mythology. He identifiedwith Odysseus in cunning and Hercules in power."

Aristotle Onassis with Maria Callas attending a social event. that his assets were to be divided in two: one half inherited by his daughter Christina, and the other half bequeathed to a foundation for the public benefit the Onassis Foundation that would focus on education, healthcare, and culture, both in Greece and beyond.

Since 1992, a model hospital clinic the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center has been in operation, saving the lives of thousands of heart patients. The Onassis National Trans plant Center, expected to be delivered in 2024, is yet another donation made by the Foundation to the Greek state.

The Public Benefit Foundation spends almost 40% of the net annual profits of the business, while the rest are invested over again. What starts as a struggle across the seas of the world comes back to Greece as social investment.

Since 1978, more than 7,400 scholarships have been awarded to students and researchers for postgraduate and doctoral studies in Greece and around the world.

While the world’s rich and powerful recruited armies of public relations consultants to gild and glamorize their image, Onassis surrounded by a small group of smart Greek associates would surprise everyone with announcements of dar ing business moves that drew the envy of his rivals, such as his exclusive deal for the transport of Saudi oil. Rumors of his private life left the international community speechless. Such was the news of his romance with the unparalleled soprano Maria Callas. Callas was one of the many celebrities hosted aboard Christina, on Onassis' famous "endless" cruises over "endless" Greek summers. Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Greta Garbo, Rudolf Nureyev, Rich ard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor: the list of ce lebrities who cruised on Christina is a long one. Onassis’ acquaintance with Callas marked the beginning of the end of his marriage to Tina. De spite the soprano’s ardent desire, the romance between these two prominent Greek international jet setters was not destined to end happily at the altar. In yet another dazzling move, Onassis flirted with, and subsequently won the affections of, Jackie Kennedy, the widow of the assassinated president of the United States of America who would henceforth go down in history as Jackie O. The images of their wedding on the private island of Skorpios an arid and uninhabited islet turned into a lavish earthly paradise by Onassis would shock the American public, as not much time had passed since the assassination of JFK. Callas, unaware that her beloved was also in a relationship with Jackie, would attempt suicide. This Greek tragedy reached its climax in 1973 with the death of his son, Alexander, in the suspicious crash of an airplane in which he was passenger. The loss of his son proved unbearable for Onassis. His physical collapse was gradual, but total. He lasted just two more years following the death of his son. When his will was read, it was revealed

The Onassis Foundation has acquired and runs the Cavafy Archive since 2012, thus safeguarding the archive’s continued presence in Greece and digitizing it so that the public can have access to more than 2,000 archival items. However, the cultural activities of the Onas sis Foundation Onassis Culture do not confine themselves to the four walls of a single building. They extend out into many parts of the city of Ath ens, at such venues as Onassis Ready, an arts incu bator of new ideas in a former factory in the Renti area; the Matala Arcade meeting point in the heart of Athens; and the arts space that is the Mantra on Dionysiou Areopagitou street. Moving in sync with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Foundation launched the Onassis Channel on YouTube, where everyone can watch theater and dance productions for free, as well as discussions on current issues, podcasts, educational programs, concerts, and online movie premieres.

The Onassis Stegi’s motto is «All we have is words. all we have is worlds.»

Onassis’ turbulent life is best described by Stelios Papadimitriou the Foundation’s late president, and father of the current president in an interview with me years ago: "Onassis’ life requires a biographer worthy of Sophocles or Euripides".

The Foundation’s activities also include a spe cial educational program for children on the autism spectrum, as well as their families and teachers, that aims to provide them with access to knowl edge, art, and the joys of learning: Onassis AiR, an international artistic residency and research pro gram in operation since 2019. Almost half a century after his passing, the legacy of Aristotle Onassis is present in a wide range of activities that may not have been related to his public profile during his lifetime. Their contribution is invaluable.

The Cavafy Αrchive was acquired by the Onassis Foundation at the end of 2012 to prevent a potential fragmentation.

On Syngrou avenue, on the same street as the Cardiac Surgery Center, stands another iconic Onassis Foundation building, in operation since 2010, as the flagship of Onassis’ cultural legacy: Onassis Stegi, with the neon installation by the pioneering British artist Tim Etchells: "All we have is words, all we have is worlds" at its façade. Onassis Stegi supports Greek and international productions and co productions of theater, dance, music, cine ma, and the visual arts, as well as other international collaborations, open discussions, and festivals.

many chic adolescents of her time perhaps too chic to be innocent Lizy Manola first went to Mykonos during the 1970s. At the time, a wind of freedom was blowing in Greece, inspired by the international hippy movements and that of May 1968, as well as the domestic change in Greece, after the fall of the dictatorship. Lily mentions in her fore word that she was mesmerised by “the light, the bright white washed alleys, the turquoise sea, the chapels, the innocent, smiling faces of theThisinhabitants.”Cycladicisland lured her to such an ex tent that she bought a summer house therewhere she stays every summer and has in spired her since to engage in photography.

MUSEMYKONOS

It was a time when ships would not moor in the harbour and Psarou was still a quiet family beach with a small taverna. Among the happy few visitors of Mykonos, one could discern the bluebloods, the business or shipping tycoons, Hollywood stars or those of the European film industry. The aforementioned would not hide, but would bathe, usually naked, in the island’s virgin beaches unlike today’s celebrities. I believe this is the spirit of freedom imprint ed in Lizy’s album Mykonos Muse. At this point, may I be allowed a personal flash back. It was at Psarou, Easter 1979. With the confidence bestowed to me by my good physical condi tion as a water polo athlete, feeling intrepid, I moved towards the sea and dove into the great blue waters of the Aegean. My group of friends, a dozen members of the golden youth of Athens, were applauding me enthusiastically, while I stupidly kept on swimming, even though my temples were long numb. We were alone at a beach hundreds of me tres wide, and we were relishing it. Mykonos was our own secret paradise, which we would often visit. Roughly forty years later, it is end of June, I am sitting comfortably on a sunbed made by Loro Piana, on the same beach, with the same high spirits.

Aristotle Onassis with his son Alexander and friends in Mykonos. Kalo Livadi beach, one of the 75 sandy beaches in Mykonos. The House of Cleopatra in Delos. An elegant waitress with the air of a model, refills the rosé wine called Idylle, chosen by my companion.Aninflatable speedboat transports our friends who have arrived by yacht to the island and have anchored right opposite us. An armada of cruisers of various types is moored at the bay, protected by the winds. Mega yachts, three mast sailing boats, and even inflatable speed boats, or tra ditional caiques harmoniously coexist in a spon taneous boat show. The scene at the once un frequented beach is completely different to the one belonging to my teenage years. A bustling crowd, consisting of 21st century globe trotters, is enjoying the sun, the sea, and the luxury of being in the right place at the right time. We pick up conversation with the peo ple sitting next to us on the beach. Steven has just sold a start up and has come to celebrate with his girlfriend who is studying Fine Arts in New York. They found out from their friends that Mykonos is a party island par excellence, so their whole programme evolves around which DJ is performing and when. Tonight they are going to Scorpio, the new hot spot, set up a few years ago by two Germans. Tomorrow they are going to Alemagou, and the day after to Principote. The party never ends in Mykonos. I ask them mainly looking at Christen if they have scheduled to visit the neighbouring island of Delos. Their an swer comes as no surprise to me. “We wake up so late, having had so many all nighters”. The holy island of Apollo can wait. And yet, there is a cer tain crowd of people who arrive at Mykonos just to visit the land where, according to Mythology, Leto hunted by Hera gave birth to Apollo and Artemis. Their father, Zeus, was chief among the twelve gods of Olympus. I leaf through the book Mykonos Muse, pub lished by Assouline, and I perceive the respect felt for the island and its inhabitants. Many photos take me back to an ideal, nostalgic image of it. Others connect me to the present day. Mind you!

a “gleeful land, a vibrant sea, a pulsating, translucent air and a sky which shamelessly rejoices during the day at the luxury of life bearing sun, while at night it brings down myriads of stars, like the fingers of your raised hands”

Lizy doesn’t reject Mykonos’ 2,000,000 annual visitors, nor does she deny its evolution as one of the most “in” destinations of the beginning of the 21st century. Along with Ibiza, Saint Tropez, Dubai and Saint Barthelemy, just to mention a few, she simply pays homage to a “gleeful land, a vibrant sea, a pulsating, translucent air and a sky which shamelessly rejoices during the day at the luxury of life bearing sun, while at night it brings down myriads of stars, like the fingers of your raised hands”, as the Greek author, M. Karagat sis, aptly described it.

VIVRET e house could have been dubbed The Lemon Tree House. Besides, its circular design is due to the existence of such a citrus tree. In a location, such as the Cyclades, where the dry northern winds offer respite from the heat, yet they do not allow any plant or tree to grow, the existence of a lemon tree in this specific plot of land led its owner and the architects to try and think of ways to protect it. The result is three concentric stone walls that shield it, along with the exterior living spaces that surround it. Simple mechanical apparati provide further protection from the sun and the wind, creating a cyclical domestic experience that adopts the perspective of a compass. The communal spaces surround the central lemon tree on a single plane at the top level of the residence, while the bedrooms follow the downward slope of the landscape inscribed in the exterior concentric stone wall. The position of the house, in a way, feels like it is part of the mountains. Facing south, so that you can admire both the sunrise and the sunset, the house’s concept is that you may open all windows and then choose your ideal space. A path leads to two beaches, roughly a ten-minute walk. One is sandy, the other rocky. The curved design is a perfect fusion of style and functionality.

ROYALOFTURBULENTTHEHISTORYTHENEWPALACE BY CHRISTOS ZAMPOUNIS IT WAS ERECTED AT THE END OF THE 20TH CENTURY TO HOUSE THE CROWN PRINCE CONSTANTINE. NEXT, IT BECAME THE RESI DENCE OF SIX KINGS AND EIGHT PRESIDENTS, RENDERING IT THE HUB OF ATHENS’ POLITICAL ACTIVITY. The New Royal Palace (currently the Presidential Mansion).

The selected area was east of the Royal Gar dens, which were so imaginatively created by Ot to’s wife, queen Amalia. It was the city’s most east ern border, situated next to the river Ilissos. The state assigned the palace’s planning to the Saxon architect Ernst Ziller, whose signature designs transformed the capital city’s residential areas. It was the era of the Neoclassical movement which, as is evident from its name was inspired initially by ancient Greece and then by Rome to a lesser extent. Their coexistence with sublime monuments of antiquity inspired the architects to imitate them, respectfully keeping with the classical standards.

The heir’s palace was inaugurated in 1897. It was a three storey building, and its top view design had a strict rectangular shape. Due to financial difficulties, since the Greek state was bankrupt at the time, its construction was plain, without any outstanding luxuries. Even the entrance did not bring to mind the grandeur of respective palaces of European dynasties. A portico with four Ionian columns and a few steps surrounded by a balcony, comprise the main en trance. On entering the interior one would come across a more impressive staircase which led to the first floor. Contrary to the first image, where marble abounded, most materials used in the in terior were skillful reproductions of marble. The lack of a ballroom came as a surprise to the new residents, a room deemed necessary by any palace with self respect. The omission was corrected and the new majestic room was deliv ered, yet with quite a delay, in 1910, because of the government’s difficulty to allocate the funds for the construction’s completion. In 1913, king George I was assassinated in Thessaloniki, which The state assigned the palace’s planning to the Saxon architect Ernst Ziller, whose signature designs transformed the capital city’s residential areas. It was the era of the Neoclassical movement which, as is evident from its name was inspired initially by ancient Greeceand then by Rome to a lesser extent.

Τ he estate agents still call this area Anaktora (Palace). They bear in mind that throughout the world house prices soar in locations that neighbour royal residences. This applies to Athens as well, since it was declared capital of Greece in 1834. Its first king, Otto, son of king Ludwig I of Bavaria, thought at some point to build his palace on the Acropolis. However, more rational thinking led him to choose a hill on the outskirts of the city, which had roughly 5,000 inhabitants at the time. Today, the Old Palace houses the Hellenic Parliament and the square in front of it is called Syntagma (Constitu tion) Square. In 1863 the next king, son of Christian IX of Denmark, settled in the same building, when he assumed the throne.

Evzones (Greece’s presidential guards) lined up at the central staircase. The main pathway of the lower garden.

The crown prince Constantine’s wedding to the sister of the German emperor Wilhelm II marked the need for the construction of a new dwelling for the newlyweds. King George’s command was clear: the building should not resemble a palace but a hôtel particulier a mansion.

From his palace on Herodou Atticou street, the new monarch Constantine, proceeded to the Old Palace, which houses today the Hellenic Parliament, to swear his coronation oath. Nevertheless, he de cided against moving there, preferring to reside in the New Palace, as it has since been renamed. The following year he announced Greece’s neutrality in the First World War. His decision was not favoured by the Anglo French Entente, who overturned him by military operation in 1917. He was substituted by his third born son, Alexander. A turbulent pe riod followed suit, with constant political shifts.

The royal chambers on the first floor would become offices, whereas on the second floor, the rooms of the aides de camp and staff were converted into four suites, one of which hosts the presiding President of Republic.

On December 16, 1923, a referendum declared the country an Uncrowned Democracy. The Royal Palace housed the Government of the Presidents of Democracy. In 1935, a new referendum reestab lished Constantine’s first born son, king George. The invasion of the German troops in Greece in April 1941 forced him to leave the country, to which he would return after a referendum in 1946. A year later, his death hastened his brother Paul’s succession to the throne. His coronation took place at the New Palace, and so did that of his successor’s, Constan tine II. The ballroom’s limited capacity became a problem, when 1,200 guests were invited to his wedding to princess Anna Maria of Denmark in 1964. Attending among them would be 18 kings, 7 crown princes and princesses, as well as 20 dukes and counts. The building’s extension was implemented in record time, with the addition of a room which would connect to the throne hall. Simultaneously, The lounge on the first floor.

The ballroom is now used as a credentials' lounge for members of the government, as well as for the accreditation of ambassadors. Every July 24th, up until the recent years of the financial crisis, the president would hold a recep tion to commemorate the restoration of democracy at the 25,000 sq.m. gardens of the Presidential Palace. In 2021, the new president, Aikaterini Sakel laropoulou, reestablished the event, with a limited number of guests and strict hygiene protocols, because of Covid-19. Following renovations, the only reminders of the royal past are the Greek monograms K for Constantine and S for Sophia, in the entrance at king Constantine street, and a portrait of the king on horseback, which has not been removed, for unknown reasons.

The Credentials' Lounge on the ground floor. construction work took place on the ground floor to add a cloak room, hygiene rooms and garrison headquarters. In October 1967, a military coup es tablished the military junta. Constantine attempted a counter coup, which failed. He left Greece and initially settled in Rome and next in London. The new government did not use the Palace, since the Crowned Republic was conserved until 1973. Its use would change with the restoration of the Republic the following year. Eight Presidents of the Republic were to reside at Herodou Atticou street, the most expensive street in Athens. The royal chambers on the first floor would become offices, whereas on the second floor, the rooms of the aides de camp and staff were converted into four suites, one of which hosts the presiding President of Republic.

THEGALLERYNATIONAL BY CHRISTOS ZAMPOUNIS THE FULLY RENOVATED NATIONAL GALLERY, ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR LANDMARKS IN THE CULTURAL MAP OF ATHENS, REOPENED ITS DOORS IN 2021 TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY OF 200 YEARS FROM THE BEGINNING OF GREECE’S STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM AGAINST THE OTTOMAN YOKE. The new, fully renovated National Gallery of Athens, and in the foreground a part of the Glass Runner, a famous glass statue and modern landmark of Athens.

P resident Putin sent in lieu of him his prime minister. President Macron, despite hav ing confirmed his presence, was forced to cancel last minute, because of the ad verse epidemic conditions in his country. On the contrary, the prince of Wales and the duchess of Cornwall arrived in Athens to attend the cel ebration of 200 years from the beginning of the Hellenic Revolution in 1821. The presence of the leaders of Russia, France and England (nowadays Great Britain) was symbolically powerful, since they were the protective forces who signed the Treaty of London in 1827, the harbinger of the In dependence of Greece. Besides the established parade which takes place every year on the 25th of March, a paramount moment for the celebration of the anniversary and a starting event because of Covid-19 was the inauguration of the renovated National Gallery. Naturally, the pandemic was a hindering factor for the breadth and splendor of the opening. Nevertheless, the gradual lifting of the confinement measures has rendered the National Gallery the new favoured destination of art lovers both from Greece and abroad. It was in 1829 when the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, amassed in Aegina the capital at the time the first collection of paintings. Nearly seven decades went by before this enriched, from private donations, collection was able to acquire a roof, a true match to its importance. In 1896, Alexander Soutsos bequeathed the entirety of his estate and artworks to the Hellenic state. Four relocations later, the current building was final ly constructed, influenced by the architectural movement of Modernism, including apparent ele ments of Functionalism. The first inventory included 1,500 paintings, 1,300 small scale artworks, 100 engravings and 10 sculptures. Within a few years, the stock of artworks amounted to 20,000 and as a result the storage rooms were packed and the exhibit halls did not suffice. It was then that the building’s extension was decided, as well as the reshaping of its exterior, with an emphasis on glassThesurfaces.contract notices were announced in 2008; the construction work started in 2014 and was completed in 2021. A few weeks ago, the archi tects who took on the task were awarded with the Golden A’ Design Award for Interior Space and Exhibition Design Category. Currently, roughly 1,000 artworks are showcased on its three levels and 20,000 sq.m. of exhibition areas and to this day, more than 250,000 visitors have attended. The artworks are displayed in chronological or der, starting with the post Byzantine era spe cifically with Domenicos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco and his famous Entombment

of Christ (1570), Crucifixion (1588) and Concert of the Angels (1610). The collections are presented according to topic, which include modern Greek paintings, western European paintings, modern Greek and European engravings, prints by Greek and foreign artists, modern Greek and European sculptures, decorative and applied arts, as well as a photographic and historical archive.

In 2004, due to lack of space, the National Glyptotheque (sculpture museum) was estab lished as an annex of Greece’s National Gallery, housed at the buildings of the former royal stables in Goudi. However, in the National Gallery’s en trance on Vasileos Konstantinou street, visitors can still see the Walking man on Column by Au guste Rodin and Takis’ Aeolian Signal. Apart from Greek artists, their established colleagues from abroad, such as Eugene Delacroix and Pablo Pi casso, also made donations, each one of them for different reasons: The former, as an offering to the philhellenic movement, with his Episode from the Greek War of Independence (1856), the latter with his Woman’s Head (1939), a gift to the people of Greece in recognition of their resistance during the Nazi occupation.

In the early hours of January 9th 2012, the in ternational Press informed the public that three artworks had been stolen from the Athens Nation al Gallery: the aforementioned portrait of Dora Maar, Mondrian’s Landscape with a Mill (1905), and a pen and ink sketch by 17th century artist Guglielmo Caccia. Journalists hastily and perhaps outrageously called it the “Heist of the Centu ry” and offered various speculations about the Woman’s Head worth, stating an astronomical 20,000,000 euro as their initial evaluation. Following a report to the police the artworks were found buried next to a gorge and a construc tion worker was arrested. During an interrogation he declared himself an “art freak”, without his deed having yet been connected to an interna tional network of illicit art trade.
