WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2015 SHEEP AND LAMB AUCTION

STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING Compared to a week ago: Slaughter lambs traded sharply higher. There was a very strong demand for sheep in the 90 – 120 lb range and especially for buck lambs going to the non-traditional market place. Feeder lambs were steady on comparable tests. Slaughter ewes traded 2.00 – 10.00 higher and slaughter bucks had too light of a test for an accurate trend. Slaughter kids traded steady to 20.00 lower, while nannies traded unevenly steady and billies traded steady to 5.00 higher. Trade activity was good and demand was very good. In the sheep supply 45% slaughter lambs, 31% feeder lambs, 23% slaughter ewes and the balance slaughter bucks. The goat supply consisted of 50% slaughter kids, 19% slaughter nannies and the balance slaughter billies and wethers. Sheep and lambs sold on a per cwt basis and goats sold on a per head basis unless otherwise noted. IDENTIFICATON CODE: CWT = BY THE HUNDRED WEIGHT REPRESENTATIVE SALES

Around 240 head of slaughter cattle sold today. The market was lower today in most classes of cattle, most notably in bulls and Holstein slaughter cows as compared to last week. Bulls were hit the hardest and averaged $8 lower. Holstein slaughter cows ranged $5-6 lower as compared to last week. On the bright side, demand for beef cull cows was strong by comparison and ranged only $1-2 lower. The Holstein cow market was very consistent today throughout the sale with similarly conditioned lean cows who had good cover ranging in the mid to upper $80’s. Highlights of today’s sale included some nice groups of 18-24 month aged open Angus heifers from Cheyenne and Platteville who ranged $149.50-150.00. Please note that Sept 30th is the 54th Anniversary Sale with special advance consignments!
