SPRUCE MOUNTAIN RANCH: Taking Pride in their Cattle

o matter what part of the country you are in, there is one thing that is common among all farmers and ranchers: pride. Those in agriculture take pride in what they do, whether it is in the field raising crops, or out on the pasture raising cattle. Spruce Mountain Ranch, located in Larkspur, Colo., is a purebred Angus operation that takes great pride in the cattle that they raise. They provide seedstock for other producers around the country, and sell animals they believe will benefit other herds. “We have the opportunity to be a part of the largest breed association in the world, and work with all the people that make an impact in the beef industry. We believe in using technology and high quality genetics to help commercial and seedstock producers improve their quality in their herds,” said Mitch Rohr, General Manager for the ranch. The goals for the operation make them a leader not only in Angus cattle, but in the cattle business in general. “The main goal we have is to be a leader in our region producing high quality Angus cattle. From the cocktail crowd to those who do it for a living to ones who just want to participate, we want to work with all markets,” he said. He added, “We want to be leaders in technology, genetics and customer service. Customer relations, in my opinion, is very high on the priority list. We want to help our customers have a better bottom line, and help them find more markets. If they aren’t happy, we will sit and talk with them about what we need to improve. It’s invaluable information. We like to hear positive feedback too, because it tells us we are making good decisions.” Raising high quality, purebred Angus cattle is not always easy. The cattle must be carefully selected, and breeding decisions made that will increase the quality. “Being in the mountain area, PAP (pulmonary arterial pressure) scores are a consideration. We also want low birth weight calves that are easy for the cows to have. They also need to have good performance. We want strong maternal traits and efficient cattle that are structurally correct. Carcass merit is also important. There has to be a balance of carcass traits, so that the animals that breed back have a good feminine or masculine look and be efficient,” Rohr said. A bulls grazes out on the pasture at the Spruce Mountain Ranch.
Tom Ames, owner, and his brother John Ames watch the 2011 female production sale.
Breeding for all of these things is challenging, and each generation makes improvement over the last. The ranch must produce high quality cattle to sell, in addition to raising enough for replacements. “We normally sell and market when they hit about 4 years of age because then they have daughters to replace them. The biggest challenge is putting a high quality product out there, without cutting our herd short. You don’t want to turn away a customer, but you can’t cut yourself short in the long run either. We are trying to find the genetics that will take our herd and our customer’s herds to the future. We look for the genetics that are popular, and will work on a consistent basis for several years,” he stated. These genetics are found through several ways. One of the ways the ranch finds them is through DNA testing. “We do a lot of DNA testing here. That is another tool for us to utilize to make better decisions. We embracing the technology whether it is embryo transfer or DNA testing. We will continue to do that and improve those genetics,” he said. The ranches widely uses embryo transfer and artificial insemination, and can produce several offspring out of one cow and bull mating. Every heifer and cow on the place are either bred using AI, or have an embryo put in them. SEE SPRUCE MOUNTAIN RANCH | Page 4
“From the cattle side, it gives us five to 10 minutes to engage with people who are not as closely tied with agriculture, and build to educate them on how much work and effort it takes to produce these cattle so we can produce a high quality piece of meat.” ~ Mitch Rohr

“After the first round, then we put our herd bulls out. We would like to have everything AI, but we can’t feed open cows. They all need to be bred. The working cows, the cows with good genetics but not quite good enough to be in our donor pen still get bred AI. They have to earn their way into the embryo transfer program,” Rohr said. Right now the ranch currently runs 500 registered Angus cows, and has about 40 cows in their donor program. They hold three sales per year. The first is held during the National Western Stock Show and is an elite heifer sale. The second is their bull sale, which is held on the second Tuesday in April. The third sale is their production sale, and that is coming up on August 11, 2012. “Our last production sale
was our first one ever. We averaged $8,600, but the prices ranged from $2,000 to $130,000. We are excited about the genetics and the offering we have put together,” he said. In addition to have cattle in the U.S., Spruce Mountain also has cattle in South Africa. “We partnered with a guy down there to ship some frozen embryos, and so far it has been successful. It’s kind of a pilot program right now, and we are intrigued with international trade,” Rohr stated. The ranch offers more than just cattle, however. “For the last 20-30 years, big ranches have used hunting and fishing as supplemental income. Where we are located, the hunting and fishing isn’t that good. So we host events as a working cattle ranch. It started out small and was only word of mouth. It’s grown into being a bigger business than anyone anticipated,” he said.

This innovative idea has led to the ranch being a leader in terms of public education. The ranch now hosts wedding and other events, which Rohr feels is a great way to educate the public about cattle ranching. “From the cattle side, it gives us five to 10 minutes to engage with people who are not as closely tied with agriculture, and build to educate them on how much work and effort it takes to produce these cattle so we can produce a high quality piece of meat. We are big about education. The location is a good spot for us, and it brings more attention to the cattle from a different source,” he said. He continued, “People are not surprised in what we tell them. They are very receptive to how the animals are treated and taken care of. The way we keep things and how it is presented speaks volumes about the genetics, and it’s also important to talk about the quality of the people who are involved.” Those who work at the ranch work hard day-in and day-out. “It’s a solid team and everyone’s input is valuable to what we do. We don’t have turnover. To me, when we don’t have turnover, it means we are moving forward and people are taking over their responsibilities. I’m proud of the people we have involved,” he said. Taking time to talk to consumers, whether they come to the ranch to visit or for an event, is important to the entire beef industry. “That five minutes with them is so important. It puts a vision out there that people know they are a lot of ranches like this out there that do take care of things and their animals. That little bit of education goes a long way because they can see it first hand,” he said. ❖
The female production sale will allow other producers to purchase top performing females from the ranch.

Color, bling and handcrafted work are what set the Cowgirl Swank caps apart.
COWGIRL SWANK Beautifying ranch & rodeo women STORY & PHOTOS BY PEGGY SANDERS | ORAL, S.D.
W
ith a business called Cowgirl Swank one would expect bling and Cheyenne Glade Wilson doesn’t disappoint. Her one of a kind, hairon-hide, Swarovski crystals hand-decorated caps are fabulous headgear for Western women. Wilson knows ranching and rodeo from firsthand experience. She was raised on a cattle ranch in southeastern Montana, where the family also raised and trained quarter horses. She naturally fell into rodeoing. After she won state high school titles in breakaway roping, goat tying and pole bending, she received a full ride rodeo scholarship to Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mont., where she studied business. Wilson worked as a makeup artist for Estee Lauder and later attended cosmetology school which led her into managing retail outlets and day spas. She and her husband moved to a
ranch on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. All of this experience led her to develop products to beautify ranch and rodeo women as they go about their daily lives when they need caps and visors. Wilson began Cowgirl Swank in March 2007 and with the birth of her son slowing her progress, it was September 2010 when she got into it full time. She has sold well over 5,000 caps in the five years she’s been in business. “We feature baseball caps, military-style caps, visors and caps for young cowgirls,” said Wilson. “Designing for individuals is a highlight of my company. Once a customer selects a style and color of cap, I pair the hide that is best suited to compliment the cap. For instance the brown brindle hide looks the best on the brown caps. The hides I buy are very thin with short hair, from Brazilian cattle. American cattle have thicker hides, too thick for my purposes, and long hair, which is more difficult to work with as they have to be trimmed and just like cutting hair, a mistake

can be ruinous. Sometimes I have a Longhorn hide with the hair a chocolate brown. Zebra and jaguar prints are also used but they are stenciled hides, not naturally grown. The hide company uses off white hide that is dyed to replicate zebra stripes and the jaguar prints.” Wilson orders whole hides ranging from medium to extra, extra large, some of which are 40 to 50 square feet. She cuts them at her home ranch barn to alleviate stray hair from floating around in the workplace. One of her several contract workers glues the hair in place. “Each custom cap is made special and is created as the order comes in and everything we do to the cap is done by hand. I did the designs when we started and now I have a worker who does many of them, except for the brands which I still do. I take the orders and talk with the customers,” continues Wilson. “You need an artistic flair to develop a design with the crystals. It’s very tricky to use round crystals to look jagged and show square edges, such as is required with a block font. The crystals are laser cut in Austria and they each have glue on the back. When I apply the heat press to them, the glue melts into the fabric and the crystals are secure. We also add our own tag inside the cap as a finishing touch.” Caps come distressed from the manufacturer to give them that broken-in look. A special order is required if a customer wants to differ from that standard. Crossed pistols design is the number one seller, the cross cap is in huge demand, patriotic and barrel racer caps are very popular, as well as caps for the little girls. Clinton Anderson with Downunder Horsemanship was one of her first big clients. Cowgirl Swank did 1,100 caps for his company alone last year. Last fall Murdoch’s Ranch and Home Supply put the caps in nine stores and re-ordered three times. Now they have expanded the styles offered and will sell the caps in all 22 of their stores which are located in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Montana. National Ropers Supply and Taubert’s also sell the caps. While these caps are sold in larger quantities to stores, they are still hand finished. Stores order in several different designs to allow for individuals tastes.
MARKETING
With her retail background, Wilson has a great flair for marketing. She utilizes Facebook where as of this writing she has 8,509 friends. She researched the family brand of Renee Drummond, www.thePioneerWoman.com, made her a cap and sent it to her. Drummond posted photos of her wearing the cap. Wilson has also sent caps to Susie McEntire Eaton and her sister Reba McEntire. Wilson had the honor

of seeing her caps worn during last winter’s Miss Rodeo America pageant and fashion show. “Great American Country featured the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) last year and will do so again this year. Before the rodeo starts every night, GAC runs a half hour segment with Suzanne Alexander, I gave her a cap and she loved it. Suzanne has worn it during Extreme Bull programs on GAC. I’ve been in talks with the television executives about having Suzanne wear a different cap each night on her future segments from the NFR,” said Wilson. “We do T-shirts and jackets but they are promotional items; we don’t get into them in a big way.” Wilson sponsors Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) Team Swank, which includes professional barrel racer, Nikki Steffes of Vale, S.D. and Jenny Proue Gilbert of Worden, Mont. Wilson grew up near another WPRA contender, Lisa Lockhart, in Montana and they are currently “next door” neighbors in South Dakota. Beyond rodeo and horses, Cowgirl Swank has filled orders for caps to aspiring car racers’ wives back in Pennsylvania, and to motocross, golf, soccer and tennis players. In May 2012, Wilson moved the business to Chadron, Neb., a college town not far from their ranch, to take advantage of a larger labor pool. It also increased her access to more timely service by shippers. In addition to various retailers the caps can be seen and ordered at www.CowgirlSwank.com, on Facebook, www.MadeInSouthDakota.com and on www.ETSY.com. ❖

Western life statues, Pony Express rider, Trail Boss, Cowboy with winter calf and foal.
Horsehair statutes become memorials for horse owners STORY BY GAYLE SMITH | POTTER, NEB. PHOTOS COURTESY OF ADELE YOUNG
T
he statute was exquisite. The bust of the Quarter Horse was white, but the hair from the departed horse’s tail burned a unique, swiggly black design into the statute. Although the horse was gone forever, his owner would always have a piece of him to treasure every time he looked at the one-of-a-kind unique statute proudly displayed on the mantle. Adele Young has been making these lasting mementos to give horse owners something from their horse that they can cherish forever. “It keeps me really busy,” the Glenrock, Wyo., pottery artisan recently explained. “There are so many people out
there who have had a horse in their lives for 25 years or more. When the horse is gone, it leaves such an empty space in their life. When I make them a piece of pottery with their own horse’s hair burned into it, it’s a way they can have a lasting tribute to the animal in their life,” she explained. Young has been making pottery of some form, and selling her work, since she was in high school. After deciding to make it more than a hobby, she has watched market trends, and explored different ideas to keep her pottery marketable to the public. “I didn’t want to just sell the same things all the time,” she explained. “I had seen the horsehair pottery, but no one would tell me how to make it. I finally decided to cast a bunch of pots, and then I started firing them to figure out how to do it on my own,” she said. “I broke a lot of pots, but in the

process I figured out a dependable firing schedule. Since then, I haven’t had any breakage at all,” she said. Young has found that creating horsehair pottery can burn if you’re not careful. “I fire the pots in the kiln, and when the temperature is over 1,000 degrees, I suit up with a respirator and welding gloves. I pull out the pot, and have 90 seconds to put the horsehair on it. The horsehair will burn into the pot. After 90 seconds, the pot is too cool,” she said. “Horsehair is very spontaneous, and it seems to do what it wants to do. I have very little control over the design it eventually takes. When I put the horsehair on the pot, it smells like a branding,” she added. Some of the most unique horsehair pottery Young has made is a series of Pony Express statutes she made last year commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express. “Several members of the Pony Express sent me a lock of their horse’s hair,” she explained. “It was usually a dearly departed horse, and one that was ridden in the Pony Express reenactment. I used the horsehair from the actual horse to make a statute to commemorate their dearly departed horse,” she said. Although many of Young’s creations are special orders, she also creates some of her own designs which she sells through her online store at WyoPotter.etsy.com. Her pottery takes the form of Christmas ornaments, pendants, pots, vases, lamps, rodeo and wildlife statutes and cremation urns. When clients request a custom order, they decide on which piece they would like her to make, and then they send in some hair if it is meant to be a memorial piece. “I usually need enough hair, about the size of a pencil in length and diameter,” she said. “If it doesn’t take all of it, I send it back to them because I know that is all they have,” she said. In addition to horsehair, Young has also used Bighorn sheep hair, wool, bison hair, sawdust, and sugar. “I like to experiment with different things,” she said. “But, I like to be able to hold the hair in my fingers so I don’t get burned when I put it on a 1,000 degree pot,” she said. “I have used elk and antelope hair, but I usually burn my fingers when I do that,” she added. She also makes custom functional pottery for the kitchen from salt and pepper shakers to plates, hand thrown pottery, sculpting, and machine knitted hats, mittens, purses, afghans and stick horses. Some of her unique items can be found in the Mercantile stores during Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Wyoming State Fair. Young can be reached at (307) 436-9857. ❖

Steve Azar gave away a signed guitar to one lucky FFA chapter in South Dakota this year’s winner was the Webster FFA chapter, from Webster, S.D.
Steve Azar’s song pays tribute to American farmers STORY & PHOTOS BY AMANDA RADKE | MITCHELL, S.D.
“I
n worn out jeans and an old work shirt, a baseball cap that wears the dirt of years of tough work, stands the American farmer. Humble as a man you’ll ever come across, lives by his words and knows the cost of how fast it’s won or lost; that’s the American farmer,” crooned country music star Steve Azar in a tribute song written for U.S. food producers at the South Dakota FFA Convention recently in Brookings, S.D. Azar, also known for his hit songs, “I Don’t Have To Be Me Til Monday,” and “Waiting on Joe,” penned the song, “American Farmer,” for a fundraising event. “It was at a charity fundraiser that I first met some of the folks from Swenson Investments and Commodities. A month later, Brad Swenson asked if I would write a song about farmers that would show our appreciation. I said I was in. My passion for farmers can be heard
in the song. In its purest form, the American farmer represents everything that’s good. It was a Blessing to write this song, “God Bless.” said Steve Azar. Swenson Investment and Commodities, based out of Huron and Sioux Falls, S.D., teamed up with Azar to develop a fundraiser to benefit the future of American agriculture — the young people involved in the South Dakota FFA. The song started playing on the Sioux Falls-based radio station, KIKN 100.5, and it officially debuted at the state’s annual FFA convention. The song is gaining popularity across the state, and it’s only a matter of time before it’s heard on radio stations across the nation. In its modest start, however, limited edition CD’s were sold for $5, with a percent of the money benefiting the South Dakota FFA Foundation. CD’s are available at: http://Shop.SteveAzar.com/AmericanFarmer-CD-CD-AmFarmer.htm “American Farmer” is also available on iTunes.
www.thefencepost.com
The chorus of the song has a powerful message: “And no matter the rain, heat or snow, he wakes up before the break of dawn, works as hard as the day is long, and like a mother cares for her child, he’ll cling to his precious land, readies those fields and sews the seeds, with his own two fists, he’ll fight the weeds and wears his coat of sweat, like it’s some kind of armor. That’s the American farmer.” “It’s much more than a song — ‘American Farmer’ is about a lifestyle that many of our FFA members feel and experience everyday,” said Paul Dybedahl, the state’s 2011-12 FFA president. “It’s such a great feeling to know that there are others out there who believe in and support not only agriculture but the FFA. There was a lot of buzz about Steve coming to the convention, and when it was finally time for him to come on stage, the crowd went wild! Members were also very excited to have their copy of ‘American Farmer’ and have it signed by Steve. He is a very down-to-earth guy, and he told me he comes from a small town where a lot of his friends have farms. It was really great to see his support and have him at our convention. This song will have a huge impact on our organization.” At last count, the song has generated more than $6,000 for the South Dakota FFA Foundation, with additional requests pouring in to the state office, according to Foundation Executive Director Gerri Eide. “The support of Steve Azar, and Swenson Investment and Commodities of Sioux Falls is making an immediate impact on the South Dakota FFA,” said Eide. “The outreach, awareness and positive publicity for agriculture education and FFA is key. Our organization advocates for all those involved in agriculture and the future of agriculture — from production to consumption. In addition, the financial support from the song to enhance the events and scholarship we provide is greatly appreciated.” Eide said the enthusiasm about Azar’s appearance and performance at convention was electric. “Students love the song; it’s a totally new twist on convention to have a country music star there to sing,” she said. “Members lined up to have their CD’s signed before and after he sang. Of course, he received a standing ovation for his performance.” To support the South Dakota FFA, Eide encourages everyone to purchase the CD, request the song on the radio, subscribe to the monthly e-newsletter of the FFA Foundation and remind school boards about the importance of agriculture education and FFA. “It’s important school boards and administrators understand the importance

of high school agriculture education and the FFA program,” she stressed. “In these times of tight school budgets and schools cutting classes, they need to know community members demand agriculture education be part of their schools.” “Agriculture is our future,” she added. “Burn down your cities and leave our farms, and your cities will spring up again as if by magic; but destroy our farms and the grass will grow in the streets of every city in the country. Agriculture education and FFA teach leadership and encourage youth Steve Azar performing at the 2012 to be life long learners in the South Dakota FFA State Convention. careers they choose. With fewer people in the U.S. coming from an agricultural background, it’s more important than ever that our agriculturalists be leaders in their community, state and nation. Our leaders need to understand the critical value of agriculture – that is what agriculture education and FFA do.” Without a doubt, Steve Azar’s “American Farmer” will soon be a hit across the country, and his support of the future of American agriculture will not likely be forgotten. The last chorus of the song reads, “He’s a gambler, like none you’ve ever seen, let’s it all ride on a field of dreams, just prays for the strength to keep her going. An extension of God’s own hands, handed down yet once again, carries the torch and the plan of the American farmer. That’s the American farmer.” ❖

BY: LISA & LAURA GEIB elcome, we have been your community family owned feed mill, manufacturer of quality animal feeds since 1920. We’ve survived the great depression, World War II, and the ever changing economy. Our grandfather Otis Axsom started working at the elevator in 1925 and continued to work here into his late 80’s. Some people really like their work! Otis saw a lot of changes in his time. When he began, farmers still used horses and delivered their products in wagons. Today, we still receive products from our surrounding community farmers like corn, barley, beans, and oats which we then blend into feeds for chickens, horses, cattle, goats, sheep, and wild birds. We specialize in small quantities, bulk, or 50# bags. We also do custom mixing and can make products to your specifications. We carry pet feeds as well as edibles such as pinto beans. We have changed throughout the years, but have always maintained our involvment with our community, continue to make quality products, and have that small town friendliness. Stop by and check out our historic building and the products we have. From cattle to wild birds we have it all! We would love to get to know you and your favorite animals! We are located in old town
