Pieper Red Angus by Gayle Smith Potter, Neb.

W

hen Mark Pieper reflects over the last 39 years, he is amazed at what he and his family have been able to accomplish with their registered Red Angus operation. Pieper Red Angus is located 7 miles east and 3 miles south of Hay Springs, Neb. It is a family operation comprised of Mark and Deb Pieper, and their son, Tate. Their daughter, Amy, and her husband, Jarrod Bargman, live in Lincoln, Neb., but also help with the website and annual production sales. The operation started with a wedding gift of 10 Hereford heifers from Deb’s parents. “Back then, everyone was crossing Herefords with black bulls,” Mark explained. “However, Deb’s father, Kenneth Hollibaugh, encouraged us to use Red Angus bulls, so we went to Wyoming and purchased some Red Angus bulls. We really liked the first cross of red baldy calves,” Mark said. It wasn’t until a year later, Mark and Deb entered into the registered

Red Angus business. “I had went to Sturgis, S.D., to buy my first set of Red Angus cows,” he explained. “I thought they were commercial cows, then I received the registration papers. I had no idea I had purchased some registered cattle.” Mark had always been interested in artificial insemination, and went to school to learn shortly after the two wed. “Deb’s dad was using artificial insemination, and he got me interested in it. I am glad I did, because it has been a vital part of our program for the last 36 years.” Once he finished the school, Mark was able to come home and start artificial inseminating their own cattle, which allowed them to rapidly improve the cattle and their genetics. Unlike many seedstock producers, the Pieper family has used leased ranches over the years to grow their operation, until they purchased their own ranch 14 years ago. “We still lease some land, but this ranch has given us a home base, and a place to have our

production sales,” Mark said. The family hosts two production sales each year, one the first part of April, and the other at the end of October. The spring sale features the yearling bulls. “We sell the oldest 60 percent of our bull crop, which is approximately 140 bulls,” Mark explained. They also sell about 50 head of replacement heifers out of their registered cows. During the fall sale, they sell the youngest 40 percent of the bull crop. The bulls average 18-months of age. “In the fall sale, we also sell around 100 registered females from show heifer prospects to donor cows,” Mark said. “Also in the fall sale, along with our cattle, we have featured approximately 40 registered Quarter Horses the last five years. We usually sell around 10 ranch-broke geldings that we have used in our everyday work on the ranch,” Mark said. “Also, we have several weanling colts out of our brood mare band. Tate heads up the horse program, and has incorporated several new bloodlines.” Mark has a number of customers who have supported his Red Angus operation over the years, and he has found many ways to give something back. “During the last 20 years, I have purchased some of my bull customer’s heifer calves. They don’t want to develop their own replacement heifers, so they let me purchase the top end of their heifers. We run those a full year, synchronize, artificially inseminate, and ultrasound them for pregnancy. We can group them together by date

the calves will be born,” Mark said. “We usually sell 200-300 heifers in the fall sale every year. Buyers can purchase five or more by gate cut.” Offering replacement heifers during the sale has worked out well for the family. “We have a lot of guys come and buy a trailer load of 10 head. They can take those heifers home, and they will calve within a two to three week period.” Mark also became bonded and licensed to order buy calves about 10 years ago. “I thought it would be a way to really help our bull program by finding an outlet for my bull customer’s calves,” he explained. “I try to get their calves bought for feedlots who like our genetics and our cattle. It has helped my customers earn a premium for their calves, and it has helped our program. What we have noticed most about these cattle is that they yield really well. Most yield between 64-65 percent, while the national average is only 61 percent.” Mark has collected carcass data on his cattle for a number of years, so he has a good understanding of what is under their hide. “We have ultrasounded our bulls for carcass traits for the last 12 years, and we offer continued on page 14

that information to our customers to use to select which bulls they want to purchase,” Mark said. “Our bulls have ribeyes that are 35 percent larger than the breed average. I think it is important, because the ribeye reflects more muscling in the cattle.” In addition to carcass data, Mark also has the ultrasound technician measure the backfat on the bulls. “It is important to me to know how much backfat they have,” he explained. “We have always developed bulls at home on a high roughage ration. We try to not let the bulls develop more than .33 of backfat. If they get more than that, they are too fat and will melt down in the spring. It also hurts their feet,” he explained. “We have a complete bull development program here,” Mark continued. “It makes me proud to be

able to look my customers in the eye and say my bulls have never left the ranch. They are born here, developed here, and sold here,” he explained. “We are just as big as we can be to handle the operation ourselves, and keep it a hands-on deal. It also means a lot to be able to tell my customers that I have seen those bulls every day, and I can pick out their mothers without looking at their tag.” Over the years, Mark, Deb and Tate have carefully selected genetics to build the program into what it is today. “We strive for cattle with a little more body length. We are really tough on their feet, legs and disposition. Our cattle may be a little bigger than the breed average, but they are stouter with more bone,” he explained. “The breed is known for calving ease, but we have tried to raise our cattle with more performance. We

The Fence Post breeder’s connection 20 1 2

have also managed to maintain cattle that are a happy medium. We don’t want so much muscling in them, that we lose maternal traits.” Mark said they like a lot of bone and body length to their cattle, even though it adds to the birth weight. “I don’t like to see any calf born under 70 pounds. I believe they can get too small, where they just don’t grow up properly. We don’t promote calving ease, but our cattle do calve easy.” A few years ago, when many seedstock producers sought the extremes in EPDs, Mark said he made a decision to keep the herd in the middle. “That decision has worked out well for us, and balanced things out,” he said. “When producers started chasing extremes, we started going to Canada to purchase bulls to get new genetics in our herd. Those cattle were phenotypically correct. They weren’t necessarily great EPD cattle, but as our cattle have proven themselves, the EPDs have fallen into place.” The cattle have also proven themselves by earning numerous championships in the show ring. “We lost our son, Travis, four years ago in a car accident,” Mark said. “He was 32years-old at the time. His part of the operation was promoting and showing our cattle. Out of the 11 years he showed at the National Western Stock Show in the pen show, he won the championship nine years,” he continued. “His passing has definitely left a hole in our operation. He loved to show and promote the cattle, and he was very, very good at it. We still try to show the cattle when we can. I think showing them really helped us establish a reputation about what kind

TKP Bodacious 693

of cattle we raise, and it helped us get our name out there.” Over the years, the family has raised some top herd sires. One of the most famous is Bodacious, a Red Angus bull they raised, along with the bull’s mother and grandmother. “He is the bull you see on all the Red Angus advertisements,” Mark proudly admits. He was the champion bull at the Iowa State Fair, NILE, Louisville, Denver and Fort Worth, before the family sold him as a 5-year-old at the Red Roundup in Canada. The legacy Mark and Deb have built is one they hope will be carried on by their grandchildren. When Travis passed away, he left behind his wife, Jessamyn, and two sons, Taylen and Jarret. “I hope the grandchildren will be a part of this operation one day,” Mark said. Mark and Deb’s daughter also has three children, Derek, Taylor, and Kayla, who all enjoy coming to the ranch and helping out. For more information about Pieper Red Angus, please see their website at PieperRedAngus.com. Mark, Deb, and Tate can be reached at (308) 638-4557. V

Wagner Charolais focuses on producing productive sires by Gayle Smith Potter, Neb.

A

fter purchasing some commercial cows with Charolais-cross calves, Bob and Jan Wagner of Nunn, Colo., were so pleased with how the calves performed, they decided to raise registered Charolais cattle. “We had been farming wheat and raising sheep,” Wagner explained. “About nine years ago, we had the opportunity to purchase this ranch. It is not suitable for crop farming, and the fences wouldn’t support sheep, so we decided to go with cattle.” The original plan was to purchase old cows, calve them and sell both at weaning. “The first crop of calves were Charolais-cross, and I was really pleased with how they looked,” he said. “The were well-muscled calves, that outperformed the others, so I decided to look into the purebred side of raising Charolais cattle.”

Wagner chose Charolais because they are well-suited for the commercial cattlemen as a terminal sire. “They put a tremendous amount of muscling on the calves, and they have great performance,” he said. “They are also known for producing larger ribeyes, and have a good rate of gain and feed conversion. They just work well for customers who want a terminal sire.” After purchasing his first registered Charolais bull, Wagner worked with a fieldman in his area to find some registered Charolais cows. “The first group I acquired were 10 head of registered Charolais cows my wife purchased for me as a Christmas gift, with help from the fieldman,” he explained. Since then, through more purchases and careful selection of replacement heifers, the Wagners have increased the herd to nearly 200

Coming 2-year-old bulls (born March 2010). All the bulls will spend their winter in pastures.

head. “We are just now approaching the carrying capacity of the ranch,” he said. “We have to figure about 30 acres a pair here.” Wagner has both spring and fall calving herds. “We calve out the heifers at 30 months, instead of 24 months, to allow them time to become more mature,” he explained. “We have noticed they are better mothers and have less calving difficulties by waiting a little longer.” It also helps balance out the two herd sizes, Wagner continued. “The calves born in the spring will calve for the first time with the fall herd. Because of the farming, our cows calve in a pasture on their own. We can’t afford to have heifers losing calves because they are unassisted,” he said. The spring herd calves in March for approximately 45 days. Wagner said he AI’s the cattle for one cycle before turning in the clean-up bulls. The fall herd calves from the middle of August through September. Both groups graze year-around. “The fall herd doesn’t get any hay at all,” Wagner said. “However, we do provide the calves with some creep feed.” The spring calving herd is brought into a 300 acre pasture in early February to calve, where they are supplemented with some hay. While increasing his numbers, Wagner has also concentrated on important traits like producing cattle with lower birth weights, but with a good rate of gain to meet weaning and yearling weight goals. “We need to produce cattle that really grow so our customers can make money,” he

said. “Charolais have had a reputation for being hard calvers, but breeders have worked hard to change all that by managing their birth weight EPDs, narrowing up the front of the cattle, and breeding away from that blocky head. They have now mostly eliminated the calving difficulties,” he said. Most of the Charolais in Wagner’s herd are larger cows, but he has bred his bulls to smaller commercial cows in the 1,100 to 1,200 pound range with no calving difficulties. He uses both his own and outside sires to AI. “We currently have a great bull for heifers that is in the top one percent for birth weight EPD,” he said. “He has a moderate frame, but is very well muscled. I think his sons will perform the same way.” In 2012, Wagner plans to host his first bull sale at Centennial Livestock Auction. “In the past, I have been selling the bulls private treaty,” he said. “We raise the bulls like they will be used. They graze on pastures with some Accuration supplement. We run the bulls in a pasture where they can get plenty of exercise with a limited intake ration so they don’t get too fat.” “I want the bulls to be hard when we sell them,” he explained. “The way we develop them, we find that they don’t lose a lot of condition when they are breeding. That has been a powerful selling point for us. We don’t want to continued on page 36

sell bulls that are turned out on the range and melt away,” he added. “Our bulls have to cover over 600 acre pastures chasing a cow without breaking down. We select our bulls more on appearance and production, than on EPDs.” “Our goal is to produce a uniform set of bulls that people can count on to breed true and be productive,” he explained. “We are always looking to improve our herd. We are like most cattle producers, we are happy with what we produce, but we’re never satisfied. We always want our bulls to look better and perform better.” Wagner also feels repeat customers are the key to success. “Customers who are satisfied are always your best advertisement,” he explained. The First Annual Wagner Bull Sale will be held at Centennial Livestock Auction in Fort Collins, Colo., on March 20 at 1 p.m. Wagner said 50-60 bulls will be in the sale, with an offering of 2-year-olds, 18-month-olds, and spring yearlings. Wagner said customers can expect to see a calm set of bulls used to being

worked. “I am a one-man operation, so I use a four-wheeler and Border Collies to work the cattle,” he said. “I have trained the cattle and my dogs to where I can move the entire herd by myself with two Border Collies.” Wagner, who is also competitive in stockdog trials, said using the Border Collies have allowed him to move his herd, while keeping them under control. “My cattle are not highheaded,” he explained. “They are very calm, and the dogs have proved to be a great asset to working with them. The cattle have to be trained to get accustomed to the dogs, but we use our dogs everyday to work our different groups of cattle,” he said. The cattle have also allowed Wagner a great training camp for his trial dogs. One of his Border Collies, Odi, is ranked in the top-three working dogs in the United States. “We have Denver coming up, and hopefully that will keep him up in the rankings,” he said. More information about the Wagner’s operation can be found on their website at Wagner-Ranch.com. V

Altenburg Super Baldy Ranch by Robyn Scherer, M.Agr. Staff Reporter

E

very seedstock producer is looking to produce superior genetics to sell to their customers. For one producer in Northern Colorado, Super Baldy cattle are just that. The Altenburg’s run a 200 head cow/calf herd, composed of Simmental and Angus cattle, both black and red. William “Willie” and Sharon Altenburg have been in the business for over 35 years, and their ranch is located just north of Fort Collins, Colo. Super Baldy was a term coined by one of Willie’s customers, and he thought the term was perfect for his crossbreeding program. “One of our commercial customers called it a super baldy, because it’s better than a black baldy. They have a unique blaze face.

When people hear the name, they think of us,” Willie Altenburg said. The cows are on a schedule, and they follow this pattern every year. In June, the cows and calves are driven from the home ranch 15 miles to the Soapstone Grazing Association land, located on the Colorado and Wyoming border. “We actually used to own part of that property. Then the grazing association decided to sell it to the city of Fort Collins. Now, we lease it back. We still run it as a grazing association, like it has been for 50-60 years. We practice a rotational grazing system on that piece of property,” he said. The grass in this area can be thin, and animals are grazed at a rate of one cow/calf pair per every 35 acres. The animals stay on the land until

November, when they are brought home, and the calves are weaned. The cows then graze on hay stubble and corn stalks for the next two months. In January, the best heifers are taken to the National Western Stock Show. This January, 16 of the heifers will go to the show. The Altenburg’s show in the yard, in the pen of three classes. After the show, they come back to the ranch to calve the cows and heifers in February. “They calve outside and are brought to the barn only when we are trying to “save the ears,” said Altenburg. The reasoning behind this is because the Altenburg’s believe that they should operate their herd just like their customers do. He said, “Even though you may be a seedstock producer, it’s imperative that you understand the production phases of the commercial industry. We want to produce cattle that fit for the commercial customers.” The ranch hosts an annual bull sale on the third Saturday of March, after the 100 day gain test. Purebred Simmental and Angus bulls (both black and red), and the Super Baldy composite bulls are sold to commercial cattlemen to improve their own herds. The sale is held at the Centennial Livestock Market in Fort Collins, and 100 bulls will be sold this year. This year marks the 20th anniversary, and the sale will be held on March 17, 2012. “We have a lot of repeat customers from Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado. We have sold cattle to people for 35 years, and a lot of them

come back. We have grown a lot over the years, so we have new customers. This is the most bulls we have ever sold,” he said. Branding is then done in early April. The heifers and cows are then brought into the artificial insemination and embryo transfer part of the operation starting the 25th of April. According to Altenburg, the heifers are A.I. bred for two cycles, and the cows for A newborn calf is cleaned off by its’ mother. one. They then go in Photo courtesy of Altenburg Super Baldy Ranch with the clean up bull. “We choose the best bull we can find for our clean-up bull. Our Simmental bulls go in with our Angus cows, and Angus bulls go with Simmental cows. We get a lot of our Super Baldys this way. In our AI program, every cow is singularly mated to the bull that matches up with her the best.” Altenburg said. continued on page 48

The bulls are then pulled out of the herd in the middle of June, and the cows are trailed back up to the leased land. According to Altenburg, “The cows are run under range conditions, like our commercial customers. Altenburg Super Baldy utilizes the technology of A.I. and Embryo Transfer while relishing the tradition of trailing cows on horseback and utilizing range conditions.” The Altenburg’s use these system because it allows them to produce superior genetics for their customers. “We believe in using all the genetic tools available to us, but also feel it is important to help interpret that information for our commercial customers. With the use of powerful tools such as A.I. and Embryo Transfer, we can reproduce the best genetics, in mass, providing even several full brothers to our larger commercial customers. If you can’t use A.I., then use A.I. sired bulls,” Altenburg said.

Altenburg believes in balancing expected progeny differences (EPDs), with physical structure. He said, “Bull buyers won’t buy an unsound or visually ‘bad one’ just because he has great EPDs, and that is as it should be.” He added, “I also feel cattle need to be bred to compliment a crossbreeding program and bring their own strengths. For example, I select Simmental to add ribeye and carcass yield and Angus (both black and red) to add carcass quality and marbling ... and don’t chase either to extremes. Emphasis is placed on other important traits such as udder, disposition, pigmentation, but especially pregnancy. She better be bred up early or she is down the road.” Heterosis has been shown to improve performance, and Altenburg believes in this as well. “Using composite SimAngus bulls (such as Simmental x Angus Super Baldy Bulls) is an excellent way to incorporate some

desired crossbreeding traits into your herd,” he said. In addition to the bull sale, the Altenburg’s also participate in the Wild West Sale at the NWSS. He also sells embryos, and has shipped them all over the country, as well as internationally. “The last five years we have sent 50 embryos to a customer in Australia,” he said. Altenburg has a lot of experience with genetics. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin — Platteville in 1973, with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science. Upon graduation, he went into beef A.I., and has worked in the industry since 1969. He is on the board of directors for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and a member of the Colorado Cattlemen Association and the Colorado Livestock Association. He has also severed on the American Simmental Association Board of Directors and as president of the Beef Improvement Federation. He currently serves in the role of Associate Vice President of Beef Marketing for Genex CRI. “I travel all over the U.S. and the world promoting beef AI. We are in the business of marketing semen all over the globe. I get a chance to meet a lot of good cattleman, and see good cattle all over the world. I get to see the good sires, and can use those in our herd,” he said. In 2010, Altenburg was honored by Colorado State University with the CSU Industry Partner Award, in recognition of his contributions to the beef business. “I think he’s done a good job with Simmental cattle. They are one of the breeds that have changed the kind of cattle that fit within the U.S. production

system. His simplified crossbreeding program with the SimAngus cross (Super Baldy), have been quite positive,” said Dr. Jack Whittier, Extension Beef Specialist and Associate Professor at CSU. Whittier also runs a small herd of Altenburg genetics, and contributes to his annual bull sale. Altenburg has also created an internship program, where CSU students can learn the responsibilities that come with running a ranch. Over the past 12 years, 15 students have participated in the program while living on the ranch. “It is a two way street. It is good for them, and we like interns. We have had some really great ones that have gone on to become veterinarians, embryo technologists and judging team coaches. It’s good to see people who have worked here go on and be successful. I like to work with young, successful people. It’s energizing. I enjoy the relationship with CSU, the students and the staff.” Altenburg enjoys what he does, and that is evident when he talks about working with commercial cattlemen. “I enjoy working with the commercial industry, and producing an animal that fit for our customers,” he said.
