Dan Turnbeaugh fills up a few glasses with the beers on tap at WeldWerks Brewery in Greeley. The owners hope to bolster Greeley’s craft brewing community with their own creations.
WeldWerks by Sharon Dunn Photography by Joshua Polson, Staff Photographer
It didn’t take long for Neil Fisher, a five-year home brewer in Greeley, to turn a hobby into a thriving business in downtown. It was really a deal he made with himself. If he could start winning some beer awards on his own, he’d consider taking his recipes from his garage to the commercial stage. In January 2014, he took home six medals in a pro-am competition. He opened WeldWerks in February 2015, just the fourth craft brewery to open since 2006. Two months later, the rookie brewer walked away from the Denver International Beer Festival with some heavy hardware. WeldWerks IPA took home gold, its Double IPA took a silver and the WeldWerks Hefeweizen came home with bronze. discoverweld.com
“We were pretty blown away, three for all three in our very first competition. It has helped to give us some encouragement. It spawned us to start putting beer in front of more people and to get to bigger territories. We know our beer can hold (its own.) We feel validated for that.” Since then, WeldWerks has taken home several more medals, including a silver for its Hefeweizen at the Great American

Beer Festival in September 2015 in Denver. The brewery has since become somewhat of a destination in downtown Greeley, transforming a former car dealership lot with plenty of room for patio seating and ready customer parking. Fisher, who had previously worked for Reach Work Camps, a nonprofit organization that organizes housing repairs for low-income families, started WeldWerks with friends Colin Jones and Kristen Allen. “It took us a little over a month or two to get it finalized, and we started to pitch it to investors,” Fisher said. “In a few short weeks, we had fundraising finished. … We raised about $450,000 for the project.”
manufacturing and industrial town with a big influx of artists, creativity and youthful identity,” Fisher said. “We’ve always thought that was a great way to encapsulate Greeley’s image.” The next challenge was finding the perfect spot. It helped his wife, Bianca Fisher, worked at the Greeley Downtown Development Authority. “Every time we talked about opening a brewery, we always wanted it to be downtown,” Fisher said of discussions with his wife. “We both feel the heart of Greeley and all exciting new businesses are downtown. So we wanted to be there.
Right off the bat, they weren’t thinking small. “One of the things we noticed with the craft industry, especially smaller breweries, a lot are starting with smaller capacities, and outgrowing themselves in less than a year, and already reaching capacity,” Fisher said. “We said, ‘We’re going to expect it to be successful and build in the capacity and make sure we can grow with the market, so when our beers do well we can meet customer demand.’” While just deciding to transform a hobby into a commercial endeavor was difficult enough, a bit more tedious part of the endeavor was coming up with the name, Fisher said. “We wanted it to be connected to the area, and have a bigger meaning so it could be relevant outside of Greeley and Weld County,” Fisher said. “Weld County is our home and that’s where our biggest demographics will be. But we also like the idea that when you talk about Weld, it’s people bringing ideas together. On the brewing side, it’s like the fusion of ingredients and creativity.” They also wanted to celebrate the area’s blue-collar work ethic, from agriculture to oil and gas.
Neil Fisher bottles some of Weldwork’s, Mexican Achromatic, a chocolate imperial stout beer.
We heard a lot of people said that was a terrible idea — maybe three years ago when there weren’t as many businesses downtown. There really wasn’t any other area we wanted to be.” At 6,000 square feet, the brewery location, was big enough for Fisher’s and his partners’ plans. They plan on a modern take on industrial design, called steampunk, a genre that blends the Victorian era with the American West. “The best adjective I can call it is retrofuturistic,” Fisher said. They took out a seven-year lease on the property. “We plan on this being our location for the indefinite future,” Fisher said. “We want downtown Greeley to be home of WeldWerks Brewing Co. for a long time to come.”

Wild Animal Sanctuary by Trevor Reid Photography by Joshua Polson, Staff Photographer
With 720 acres of open habitat for more than 400 animals, the Wild Animal Sanctuary offers visitors a truly elevated experience. Despite a strict “no dogs” policy, visitors might first encounter a number of dogs when you arrive at the Sanctuary. These dogs are practically staff, making play companions for rescued cubs who must be separate from the adult animals. Visits begin at the Welcome Center and Gift Shop, where staff and volunteers explain the Sanctuary’s work, rules and regulations. From there, visitors can check out the education center, which is surrounded by spaces where newlyrescued animals are held. The animals are transitioned from these spaces into species-specific open habitats where they can live in social groups. discoverweld.com
Focusing on animal care, the sanctuary uses an elevated ‘Mile into the Wild’ walkway to give you the opportunity to see animals without interfering with their natural behaviors. While most zoos provide animals with an enclosed habitat, the sanctuary provides animals with an open habitat in which to roam free.
A shadow gives visitors to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg a hint of the size of the tiger that can be seen from the walkway.
Visitors are encouraged to dress for the weather, as the walkway is open-air and can take at least two hours to traverse. Free stationary binocular units offer a closer view of the sanctuary’s lions, wolves and other large carnivores. The sanctuary is one of only about a dozen sanctuaries in the United States that cares for large carnivores. From the walkway, you can see tigers and bears swimming in natural lakes and ponds. The sanctuary also provides animals with structures for both shade

and play. Signs are posted at each habitat to educate visitors about the animals. Visitors also can learn more with a free audio tour accessible by cell phone. The walkway extends from the education center to the Bolivian Lion House, where visitors can rest in the shade above lion enclosures. The lion house contains tables for a quick rest or a bite to eat before walking back to the gift shop. For those who wish to eat out in the open, tables are also spread out at observation decks along the walkway. In its 36-year history, the sanctuary has rescued more than 1,000 animals from illegal or abusive situations. Working with state, national and international law enforcement, the sanctuary continues to rescue animals from overcrowded zoos, exotic animal auctions and other unhealthy environments.
The Sanctuary is open daily at 9 a.m. year-round, closing only for New Years’ Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The entrance gate closes two hours before sunset, when visitors in the Sanctuary must leave. PRICES: Adults (13 and up): $30 Children (3-12): $15 Children (under 3): FREE These prices only cover the administrative costs of your visit, so the Sanctuary asks that you support the animals by donating an additional amount or something from the Sanctuary’s wish list.

Fort Lupton by Trevor Reid For The Tribune
A city proud of its history, Fort Lupton offers visitors the opportunity to take a step back in time with a reconstruction of the city’s namesake. West Point graduate Lt. Lancaster Lupton arrived in what is now the city of Fort Lupton on a military expedition in 1835, more than 40 years before Colorado became a state. The next year, he began construction on a trade fort, originally called Fort Lancaster, using labor from the Mexican village of Taos. Just east of the South Platte River, Lupton seized the opportunity to engage in the fur and buffalo hide trade on the river banks. Trading with native plains tribes and immigrants, Fort Lupton was a crossroads of frontier life. Lupton traded not only fur and buffalo hides, but other frontier essentials, such as gunpowder, clothing and pots and pans. After eight discoverweld.com
years of fierce competition with three other trade forts in the area, and a general decline in the fur and robe trade, Lupton was finally forced to cease operations at the fort in the mid 1804s. After abandoning the fort, Lupton moved south and lived with his Cheyenne wife Thomass in the small village of Hardscrabble on the Arkansas River. Excluding some use during the gold rush in 1859 and use as a stage station later on, the fort was practically abandoned. By the 1920s, all that was left standing of the fort was an adobe wall. While one of the competing forts is remembered only with
a memorial marker, Fort Lupton was set for something more. In 2004, the South Platte Valley Historical Society set to reconstruct the city’s namesake. With so little of the fort left, about 300 volunteers were left to use eyewitness accounts to reconstruct the fort. After seven years, the Society was able to open the fort to the public with a dedication ceremony. The reconstructed fort allows you to walk through the inner plaza, where you can see blacksmith and carpenter shops. The fort also features a kitchen, living quarters, trade rooms and a storage room filled with historic artifacts. The reconstructed trade fort is located in the South Platte Valley Historic Park, 100 acres of history situated along the river. With a visitor center, a camping area, a nature area and four historic structures, the park invites you to a firsthand experience of the early settlement of the American west. Running from north to south, the park contains the reconstructed trade fort, an 1850s trapper cabin, a late-1860s farm
house and one of the first schoolhouses in Weld County, built in 1875.
