Greeley Blues Jam 2016
NATIONAL PERFORMERS The North Mississippi Allstars
formed in 1996; the product of a special time for modern Mississippi country blues. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson soaked up the music of their father, Memphis legend Jim Dickinson, and absorbed the North Mississippi legacy while playing and ‘shaking it down’ in the juke joints when their blues ancestors R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Otha Turner and their musical families were at their peak, making classic records and touring the world. Eventually, Luther (guitar, vocals) and Cody (drums, vocals) formed the North Mississippi Allstars and pioneered their own brand of blues-infused rock and roll. Luther and Cody continually expand the tradition of the Mississippi hill country blues that has inspired them from the beginning, but as Rolling Stone aptly notes, “the Allstars may be children of tradition, but they’re digging deep in undiscovered country”. The North Mississippi Allstars were on the GBJ stage in 2011 and are back by popular demand.
Charlie Musselwhite With an induction into the Blues Music Hall of Fame, 35 Blues Music Awards (including three wins in 2014!) and 11 Grammy nominations, American electric blues harmonica player and bandleader Charlie Musselwhite has truly earned legendary status as one of blues music¹s most important artists. Musselwhite has released over 25 albums, as well as guesting on albums by many other notable musicians including Bonnie Raitt, INXS, Tom Waits and The Blind Boys of Alabama, among others. Musselwhite recently teamed up with Ben Harper on “Get Up!” - the collaboration that took home the Grammy for Best Blues Album in 2014. Charlie first played the Greeley Blues Jam in 2009 and we are very proud to welcome him back.
Tommy Castro & The Painkillers
Night after night, Tommy Castro, fervently delivers his driving, blues-soaked, soul-baring music to fans all over the world. The road is where he honed his guitar playing to a razor’s edge. It’s where he learned how to captivate an audience with his intensely passionate vocals and his memorable songs, licks and grooves. It’s where he learned to turn his band into a dynamic, high-performance engine, able to bring down the house with a soulful ballad and then bring fans to their feet with a blistering blues rocker. Over the course of his four-decade career, Castro has played thousands of shows to hundreds of thousands of fans, packing dance floors, always leaving them screaming for more. He has released 14 albums filled with original blues, soul and West Coast rock, each one standing alone. Hailing from the San Francisco area, Castro, along with his band, The Painkillers, play music that is guaranteed to fire up fans and leave critics searching for new words of praise. Tommy Castro played the 2nd annual Greeley Blues Fest in 2006 and we are very excited to have him and his new band back after 10 years. Greeley Blues Jam 2016

NATIONAL PERFORMERS Chubby Carrier and The Bayou Swamp Band
Chubby Carrier is undeniably “The World’s Premier Zydeco Showman.” Born on July 1, 1967 in Churchpoint, Louisiana, Chubby is the third generation of zydeco artists with such famous relatives as Roy Carrier (father), Warren Carrier (grandfather), and cousins Bebe and Calvin Carrier who are presently considered legends in zydeco history. Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band have recorded ten CDs over the past 22 years of Chubby’s professional career. His band has traveled all over the world, performing to audiences in all parts of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, Canada. North Africa and Europe. Chubby and the band travel 150-175 days a year, taking his act to big festivals such as the New Orleans Jazz Fest, the Chicago Blues Fest, Summerfest (Milwaukee), Memphis in May. We are thrilled to have Chubby Carrier performing at the 2016 Greeley Blues Jam.
Davy Knowles
The journey began for Davy Knowles growing up on the Isle of Man, learning to play guitar from listening to the likes of Gallagher, Clapton, Knopfler, Green and Mayall and honing his skills playing the local music circuit. Knowles’s professional career started with a bang – arriving in America age 19 with his band Back Door Slam, an acclaimed debut album, and rave reviews at SXSW 2007. From that dynamic introduction, Knowles proceeded to make a significant impact across US media – from memorable TV performances on Jimmy Kimmel and Good Morning America, to a three year run at radio with the singles ‘Come Home’ from the debut album Roll Away and ‘Tear Down the Walls’ and ‘Coming Up For Air’ from the Peter Frampton produced sophomore album. “Davy already has a recognizable style. He’s definitely the gunslinger guitarist of the 21st century,’’ – Peter Frampton. We are very happy to introduce Davy Knowles to the Greeley Blues Jam audience.
John Primer “The Real Deal” As the title of his critically acclaimed Atlantic Records CD suggests, Grammy Award and Blues Music Award Nominee, John Primer is truly “The Real Deal.” John followed the path of his mentors and migrated to Chicago in the fall of 1963. In 1979, master songwriter and bassist Willie Dixon persuaded him to join his band The Chicago All Stars. Another blues master who believed in John Primer was none other than the “Hoochie Coochie Man” himself, Muddy Waters. Muddy recruited John not only as a guitarist, but also as an opening act and bandleader. Fresh off the heels of his success with the Muddy Waters Band, John signed on with the legendary Magic Slim. For the next 14 years, he toured with Magic Slim & The Teardrops. John is a “Living Legend” and has been given the Lifetime Achievement Award many times. He is a 2015 Grammy Nominated Blues Artist and is one of the last Blues Artists with original Mississippi roots. He was recently awarded “Best Traditional Blues Artist by the Blues Music Association. John Primer will be backed up by Colorado’s own award winning Blues band, The Delta Sonics. 4

COLORADO PERFORMERS Chris Daniels & The Kings As are many of us, Chris Daniels and Freddi Gowdy are survivors, still standing after bouts with cancer. You gotta celebrate life as much as you can, and what better way than thru ten hot slabs of R & B-soaked blues from Chris Daniels and the Kings with Freddi Gowdy, “Funky To The Bone.” Guitarist Chris Daniels has been a staple on the Colorado blues scene, working with The Kings, his horn-fueled backing band, since 1984. Freddi has been rockin’ these blues since the Sixties, and by joining forces with Chris and the Kings makes this set a fine combo of Sam and Dave, Tower Of Power, Al Green, and even a bit of Chicago, and gets your blood pumpin’ and your booty bumpin. Chris Daniels was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2015. This is the first appearance of Chris Daniels & The Kings at the Greeley Blues Jam.
Rex Peoples And X-Factr “One of the sweetest voices here in Colorado belongs to vocalist Rex Peoples. I first met Rex as part of African Wind when they performed at an acoustic festival the Phoenix Blues Society produced back in 2006, so Rex and I go way back. He and his amazing band, X Factr, just got back from Memphis, representing the Colorado Blues Society at the IBC, and they were able to record a killer record, Fried Food / Hard Liquor, in time for the big event. There was a lot of buzz on Beale in Memphis about this Colorado band, and their semi-final set at B.B. Kings will be in my memory banks for a long time to come.” — Kyle Deibler, Bluenight
The Jaden Carlson Band The Jaden Carlson Band is a high-energy power trio based out of Boulder, Colorado that melds funk, soul, jazz, fusion, blues and rock. Led by guitarist Jaden, they expertly perform a unique and expansive repertoire of infectious originals and carefully selected covers embodying their own unique arrangements.

Whether she is singing blues, jazz, pop, or Gospel, her voice charges the songs with a primal dose of genuine soul. Hazel has regularly performed with Big Head Todd and the Monsters. She has sung with or opened for such artists as Julian Lennon, John Hammond Jr., Lucy Bleu Tremblay, Peter, Paul and Mary, Stanley Jordan, John Mayall, Charlie Musselwhite, Pop Staples, Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Lonnie Brooks, Lou Rawls, Rickie Lee Jones, James Taylor, Little Ed and the Blues Imperials, and many more. This is Hazel’s first appearance at the Greeley Blues Jam where she will once again open for Charlie Musselwhite.
Lionel Young Band The Lionel Young Band, winners of numerous awards for best in and around the Colorado region, won the 2011 International Blues Challenge (IBC) band competition. Added to his victory at the 2008 IBC in the solo-duo category, that makes Lionel Young the first double champion in the history of the IBC. Fans of the driven, classically trained Young, love his distinctive brand of blues on the electric violin. His show features not only Young originals, but interpretations of blues classics by Willie Dixon, Leadbelly and Stevie Ray Vaughan, features the strength and passion of Young’s playing, as well as his smooth vocals and unique translations.
