Perhaps it’s because we were founded upon high principles by colonists who knew what they wanted and were prepared to work hard to make their western dream come true. Nathan Meeker, Greeley’s founder, envisioned “a western cooperative agricultural colony, the ‘Union Colony’ in the west, based on founding principles of temperance, education, agriculture, irrigation and high moral standards.” Agriculture remains an important part of our economy (We’ve been in the top ten nationally for ag-related production since the mid-60s), but a diversity of industries like energy development, healthcare and education have created a balanced economy which has allowed us to become one of the fastest growing areas in the state and nation. With technology taking center stage in agriculture and other industries, our educational institutions play a powerful role in preparing our future workforce. Although we’ve grown to more than 103,000 citizens, we’ve retained our small town feel, and friendly atmosphere. From Greeley, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Rocky Mountains – and you can get there in about an hour! We’re midway between our state capitol Denver, and the capitol of our neighbor to the north, Cheyenne, Wyoming.

OurStory

When the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, a spur from Cheyenne to Denver was built, opening this part of the country for settlement. Nathan Meeker, Horace Greeley’s agricultural editor at the New York Tribune, was inspired to create an agricultural utopia. Where the railroad crossed the confluence of the Platte and Cache la Poudre rivers, the city of Greeley was born – an ideal location where both natural resources and transportation were abundant. Early in the settlement’s development, an irrigation canal became priority construction, turning the high desert into an agricultural oasis. Throughout its history, this area has been known for growing potatoes, sugar beets, corn, and onions, among many other crops – all made possible on irrigated farmland. The community grew because its citizens collaborated on projects such as irrigation ditches to strengthen the young town. Community leaders convinced the state in 1889 to place its teacher-training college in Greeley – an institution that is now the University of Northern Colorado. As the county seat for Weld County, Greeley became the business hub for northern Colorado, providing goods and services to people throughout the region. Leaders in Greeley were the driving force behind the Colorado-Big Thompson project, which brought water from the western slope to the front range of Colorado. Agriculture and food processing continued to play large roles in the community’s growth. Geographically, we expanded primarily to the west from Greeley’s

core. The city’s population named grew at an annualized rate of about 2.2%. Aims Community College was founded in 1967, providing both early college and technical training in support of workforce development. The teachers’ college became a university in 1969. As the state celebrated its centennial in 1976, author James Michener, who studied and taught at the college in the 1940s, wrote his epic novel “Centennial,” based on the history of our region. Industries have come and gone in cyclical fashion. More recently, oil and gas development has supplied jobs and revenue to our area. When oil and gas development was down, construction was up – building homes and apartments for new people moving to the community. We welcome new residents as they bring diversity, skills and ideas to our community.

The original Union Colony (now Greeley) was founded at the confluence of the Cache la Poudre and South Platte rivers. Today, you’ll find us at the intersection of U.S. Highways 85 and 34. Greeley-Evans School District 6 is the 13th largest in the state of Colorado. All of the district’s teachers rate as highly qualified through the Colorado Department of Education, with half having master’s degrees. With an incredibly diverse student body (more than 50 languages spoken!), District 6 leads the way in implementing blended learning (an instructional method that allows educators to leverage technology to personalize learning for all students, while getting real-time data on student achievement) in elementary and middle schools. The college, founded in 1967, delivers more than 4,000 course offerings per year through daytime, evening, weekend and online classes. Aims opened a new physical education and recreation facility on its Greeley campus, and a new Public Safety Institute in Windsor. A key player in workforce development and training initiatives, Aims is also a member of the Northern Colorado Manufacturing Partnership.

One of the founding principles of the Union Colonists arriving in Colorado, education quickly became a priority. The citizens of Greeley asked the state to locate its teacher training school here. The State Normal School, founded in 1889, offered two-year teachers certificates, and began offering graduate degrees in 1913. Entertainment The audition-based Greeley Chorale performs in the exquisite Union Colony Civic Center, one of the state’s finest venues. Greeley’s arts community thrives because the City has long valued the contribution of its creative sector. Every capital project constructed since 1998 has included 1% for art in its budget. Improvements to a major arterial include “uptown trees” and a key intersection gained some “Flutterbys.” Even our manhole covers for storm drains feature art created by a citizen. The long-standing Sculpture on Loan program places unique, threedimensional art in parks and plazas throughout the city and greatly expands our city’s art collection. Greeley’s state-designated Creative District features artistic collaboration between the City of Greeley, the Downtown Development Authority and the University of Northern Colorado. Wild Animal Sanctuary

Located in southern Weld County Home to more than 400 tigers, African lions, black bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, leopards, wolves, servals, bobcats, foxes, lynx, coyote, coati mundi, raccoon, porcupine, ostrich, emu, camels, alpacas, horses and rescued dogs and cats. All have been rescued from abandonment, overcrowded zoos, and illegal private ownership. Animals roam in spacious habitats over 720 acres, while visitors view them from an elevated walkway, The Mile into the Wild.

Economy Greeley and Weld County continued to experience economic growth in 2016. When the oil and gas industry experienced a downturn due to low oil prices, other industries picked up the slack, bringing us a 3.0% unemployment rate in late 2016. Even with production declines, Weld County continues to lead the state in oil and gas revenues. The diversity of Weld County’s economy allowed displaced oil workers to transition into a thriving construction industry. New housing, retail, and lodging structures all played a role in supporting Greeley’s population growth to more than 100,000 citizens. The committee, which meets monthly, plans an annual tour in late summer or early fall, as well as presenting educational symposia. Ambassadors volunteer to represent the Greeley Chamber of Commerce as its public relations team. The Ambassadors encourage participation by visiting member businesses and partnering with new member businesses. Ambassadors invite Chamber members to get directly involved in the Greeley Chamber’s programs. Orientation is required for all new ambassadors. Annual Dinner offers an evening recognizing highlights from the previous year, Winners Circle award winners, Young Professional of the Year, Ambassador of the Year and the Leann Anderson Community Care award winner. Be a Local Champion advertises the community benefits of keeping dollars local. The campaign features photos of Chamber investors in a rotating series of print and digital ads, and is carried through the Chamber’s social media posts, as well. Bear Biz, a joint effort between the Chamber, the City, UNC, and the Downtown Development Authority, promotes area businesses to UNC students through a website and daily social media posts. Participating businesses offer students a discount for simply showing their student I.D. Biz@Lunch provides referral development over lunch, plus a short educational webinar of general business interest. Local restaurants host these connection events, scheduled three times a year. Business After Hours is traditionally hosted by an investor business on the fourth Thursday of each month from 5-7 p.m. The host business provides beverages and hors d’oeuvres for a social evening. It’s an event where business connections and business referrals flourish. Business Before Hours offers a light breakfast and 15-second individual introductions to the entire group, in addition to networking. BBH is held nine months of the year on the second Wednesday from 7 – 8:30 a.m. Candidates Academy/Forums Presented prior to odd-year elections, Academy teaches potential candidates everything from campaign finance to how to run a campaign. Annual forums give the public a chance to hear from the candidates running for a variety of local public offices and ballot issues of importance each fall. The Greeley Chamber of Commerce does not endorse political candidates. Chamber Leads, scheduled weekly, allows Chamber investors the opportunity to become totally familiar with one another’s businesses in order to share live leads with each other. The group is investor-run, and currently meets every Thursday morning. Community Council on Education develops strategies to help increase academic achievement in our schools, strengthen community relationships, and engage the business community to take ownership in solutions to improve educational performance.

Energy Proud is a diverse grassroots group who support local energy development that is safe, affordable, reliable, and clean. Energy education is the primary focus.

Golf Tournaments include the Prairie Dog Classic Golf Tournament which brings together nearly 240 golfers on a lovely summer day for networking, great food, and friendly competition. The Bogey Open, scheduled in the fall, serves as an end-of-season event to celebrate golfing Chamber investors. An active committee of volunteers meets through the year to make the tournaments happen. Greeley Lights the Night holiday kickoff parade is a joint effort between Visit Greeley and the Greeley Downtown Development Authority. A committee plans this event to ensure that this holiday tradition continues! Mark your calendar for November 25, 2017. Greeley Young Professionals include Greeley’s young men and women between the ages of 21 to 39. The group meets the first Thursday of the month for dynamic networking at various locations within our community. In addition, GYP plans professional development, community service and social activities. The Steering Committee meets monthly to plan and deliver GYP programs. Leadership Northern Colorado is a six-month (January – June) interactive development program for 25 - 30 select leaders in the region. LNC focuses on regional issues, regionalism, regional leadership skills, classroom and tour-based instruction. LNC is a joint initiative of the Greeley, Ft. Collins, and Loveland Chambers of Commerce, the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado, and the Community Foundation Serving Greeley and Weld County. Leadership Weld County is dedicated to ensuring continuity of knowledge for effective future leadership. By broadening participants’ knowledge of the community and their own leadership practices during monthly full-day classes, LWC prepares the participants on a wide range of opportunities and challenges facing the community. (September – May) Local Government Business Affairs Committee enables the Greeley Chamber of Commerce to study and have a positive impact on issues that affect Greeley-area businesses and quality of life in our area. This committee is empowered by the Board of Directors to communicate Chamber positions to appropriate officials. The committee meets monthly. Chamber 101 New Investor Orientations are designed to introduce new investors to the Chamber staff, while giving an overview of programs offered. They are presented prior to Business After Hours each month. Northern Colorado Legislative Alliance is the united public policy advocacy effort of the Greeley, Fort Collins, and Loveland Chambers of Commerce, along with the Northern Colorado Economic Development Corporation and Upstate Colorado Economic Development. Its purpose is to influence state and federal policy, legislation, and regulation to create a positive economic business climate for Northern Colorado. Visit Greeley promotes tourism opportunities in Greeley, as well as serving the needs of meeting planners who schedule conferences and conventions in the city. Visit Greeley also maintains an events calendar of entertainment, athletic, and business activities in the area. The Visit Greeley Board meets monthly.
