Letter from the City Manager

After an unusually cold and snowy winter here in Weld County, I’m more than ready to enjoy the Spring season that is just around the corner. I can’t wait to get outside, turn some dirt, plant some flowers, and enjoy the sun and warm weather. I’m even ready for a little sweat & maybe a sore back if it means I’m in my yard!

Home & Garden Show Reflects Region’s Upturn

I’m also ready for our annual Home and Garden Show at Island Grove Regional Park. This is The Tribune’s 31st year to present the show, which has become the largest such show in northern Colorado and the second largest in the state. We expect more than 160 businesses to show their products and services to thousands of visitors during the three days of this year’s show. You’ll find expertise at this year’s show; you’ll discover new things; you’ll be educated and inspired. You’ll learn new ways to add to the quality of life in your home and garden. You’ll learn ways to add to your home’s values. You’ll learn how to do-it-yourself, or you can choose to have it done for you by a professional. The annual Home and Garden Show is one of The Tribune’s favorite events of the year because it also allows us to connect with our friends in the community. You’ll see many of our staff members, both from news and advertising, helping to check in and direct visitors, and we’ll gladly answer any questions you might have about the newspaper’s delivery, advertising or news content. The opportunity to interact with Tribune readers as well as gather home and garden ideas is what makes this weekend so special. We hope you take time to join us this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Island Grove Regional Park. You’ll not only leave with some terrific improvement ideas, but perhaps you’ll also leave with a new pair of gloves for those soon-to-be calloused hands.

Spring in Greeley feels great. That’s true every year and especially this year as we see the daffodils coming up and experience the continued upturn in the local and regional economy. It looks to me like Spring 2014 in Northern Colorado represents a fresh start for many, and the economic upsurge we’re experiencing shows that this is an exciting time for residents and businesses in Greeley. New and existing businesses all around our city are working to invest or reinvest in our community and residents are taking even more pride in their properties. That paints a very nice picture for Greeley’s future and our city’s image. City Council members and City staff are working to spruce up the city too. The newly opened Homestead Park, streetscape improvements along 8th Avenue, the new Highway 34 screen wall and the plan to resurface more streets this spring and summer all contribute to what residents and businesses are planning and doing. Not to mention the fun 2014 Greeley Unexpected campaign that’s set to launch on May 23rd. It feels great that we can make these positive contributions. We hear in the news every day how property values are increasing and the stats coming out of our Building Inspection Division confirm that plans for new homes and apartments are on the rise—a definite sign that Greeley is a prosperous and growing city. It makes me think that this is truly an awesome time for people to reinvest in their homes and yards. The Tribune’s Home and Garden show is a great time for area residents to feel great about Greeley.
