2014 SEASON OUTLOOK For the past three seasons, the Wagner College Water Polo team has been within an arm’s reach of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title, only to fall short to MAAC rival Iona. With the return of three record-breaking players among the 11 returning letterwinners, the Seahawks look to take the next step, after winning a school record 26 games in 2013. The squad of Head Coach Chris Radmonovich, alongside assistants Allison Kosich and Laura Karbach, will be led by captains Stacy McGregor and Rachel Burns. McGregor is one of four seniors on the roster, and is coming off of a 23 goal, 37 assist season. Burns, an All-MAAC Second Team performer a season ago, is considered a strong leader as a junior. The New Zealand native was second on the team, drawing 71 exclusions in 2013, while scoring 27 goals and adding 59 assists. Leadership will also be provided by a senior class that has seen much action during their careers. Ashton Cline, Sidney Hoshko, and Maura McGinley have all been part of a runner-up finish in the MAAC Tournament the past three seasons. This year’s seniors are looking to advance even further. The Seahawk attack will again be strong, as Jessica Burdge, Jess Lundgren, and Megan Rodriguez all return from record-breaking 2013 seasons. Burdge, a junior, set the school record with 115 goals in 2013, while converting on 50 percent of her shots. Lundgren, the lone Australian and returning MAAC Rookie of the Year, broke the Wagner record in steals last season, grabbing 124 while scoring 62 goals. Another sophomore, Rodriguez, broke the single-season assist record last year, finding her teammates for a goal 82 times. The biggest loss from the past season will come in the net, as the former goalie Karbach, who is now an assistant coach with the team, has graduated. Radmonovich brought in two athletes to fill Karbach’s void, in Katrina Mooers, and Emily Riddle. Both newcomers bring impressive resumes to the net, and will be tutored by the former All-MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Depth will not be an issue for Wagner. Sophomore Lily Doerfler returns at center, after earning MAAC Rookie of the Week honors once last season, and totaling 59 goals. Dual-sport athlete Michelle Greenough, who is a member of the Wagner Swimming and Diving team, won 11 sprints and was in on 72 points from a season ago, while Carolina Silva will provide depth on attack. In addition to the two goalies, the freshman class will be one to watch at Wagner, as five additional field player arrive with the two goalies. Gabryel Oloapu, Amanda Sutherland, and Aspen Trautz will be featured on attack for the Seahawks, while Alexy Chandler will see time at utility, and Madison Lyon will redshirt.

THIS IS WAGNER COLLEGE As tenacious as any Seahawk, Wagner College enjoys a bucolic perch atop Grymes Hill overlooking Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1883 as a Lutheran proseminary, Wagner has evolved to become an independent residential liberal arts college enrolling a capacity of over 2,000 students. The location of the College above the gateway to one of the world’s greatest financial and cultural capitals was the work of alumnus Frank Sutter who convinced the College’s Board of Trustees to relocate Wagner here from Rochester in 1918. In this, the Rev. Sutter and the trustees were extraordinarily prescient. Their wisdom provided Wagner with a distinct geographical advantage over all other all liberal arts colleges in the country. Wagner is New York State’s southernmost college and its 105 park-like acres represent the highest elevation on the eastern seaboard from Maine to Key West Florida. The College’s signature curriculum – the Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts – capitalizes on the best of a traditional, suburban, liberal arts college campus and the infinite array of educational opportunities afforded by New York City. Students intern in the world’s leading financial institutions. They observe and experience diversity from the sophisticated workings of the United Nations to melting pots of multicultural neighborhoods. They circulate in the city’s unparalleled creative environment of museums, media, and performing arts. This is their laboratory. They immerse themselves and are inspired by the city’s sheer energy. The contrast between the frenetic life of the city and the almost pastoral setting of the campus is the perfect metaphor for the melding of experiential and theoretical education that is the hallmark of The Wagner Plan. In small learning communities, students and faculty explore the conceptual foundations of the arts, humanities, and sciences. The faculty challenges students to consider new ideas, to master new skills and technologies, and to reflect and draw meaning from what they have experienced in and out of the classroom. A lush canopy of mature maples and oaks shades Wagner’s 105-acre campus of manicured lawns and gardens; historic and modern buildings; and sweeping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New York Harbor. In early 2009, former U.S. President Bill Clinton recognized Wagner College and President Richard Guarasci, at the second annual Clinton Global Initiative University. Wagner was cited for the Port Richmond Partnership, an innovative program that will focus the school’s community resources in an effort to improve quality of life in a specific Staten Island neighborhood. Movie companies have frequently used the campus as a classic college setting, most recently for a movie titled “School of Rock” starring Jack Black (Shallow Hal). The picturesque campus was also used in a fall 2001 television series, The Education of Max Bixford, starring Richard Dreyfus and as the site of a prospective private military school in the HBO series, The Sopranos.

THIS IS WAGNER COLLEGE Since the adoption of the Wagner Plan in 1997, enrollment has increased by nearly 40 percent and d ce student quality as measured by high school average and SAT scores have improved as well. Once lls largely a commuter campus, now 82 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls rk, that offer “million dollar” views. Though continuing to serve students from metropolitan New York, the college draws most of its enrollment from beyond the immediate region. By every measure – enrollment, endowment, and national reputation – Wagner is ascendingg the ranks of America’s strongest small colleges that blend the liberal arts with a commitment to servicee and preparation for the professions. Campus life includes the array of sports provided by an NCAA Division I program which is housed immingg in a 93,000-square-foot sports center featuring an extensive fitness center, an indoor NCAA swimming ng fields pool and a basketball arena. A football and track & field stadium showcases a variety of playing throughout the campus including baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer venues. Wagner’s alumni include Broadway Tony award winners, movie stars, film producers, playwrights, and Fortune 500 CEO’s including the chairman of GE Investments, the chairman of Dupont Europe, the chairman Emeritus of The Oppenheimer Management Company and the chairman of the New York Power Authority.

2013 HIGHLIGHTS Water Polo Tops Nation In Team GPA For Second Straight Year Staten Island, NY – For the second consecutive year, the Wagner College Water Polo team earned the highest team grade point average among all 56 water polo programs that comprise Division I, II and III announced by the Association of College Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). In 2013, Seahawks posted a collective 3.50 GPA. “I am privileged to salute our women’s water polo team on earning this significant achievement for the second straight year and for, once again, bringing distinction to Wagner College,” said Athletic Director Walt Hameline. “To earn the highest GPA in your sport is truly special. And to earn this accomplishment in back-to-back years is particularly noteworthy. This incredible academic achievement, combined with a 2013 season that featured the most wins in school history, speaks volumes about the outstanding quality of student-athletes within the Wagner water polo program here under head coach Chris Radmonovich.” “I am extremely proud of the effort that our team has made in the classroom and elated that their hard work has been rewarded for a second straight year,” said Radmonovich. “I’m extremely fortunate and thankful for the opportunity to coach such a dedicated group of student-athletes.” The ACWPC groups its All-Academic Awards into three categories: Outstanding (3.71-4.0 PA), Superior (3.70-3.41) and Excellent (3.4-3.20) and 11 members of the Wagner team attained GPA’s that met the requirement to be in these categories.
