“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson The Garden is a special place within our community that welcomes guests of all ages in all stages of life. It inspires those who explore its endless beauty, engages visitors in all that Mother Nature has to offer and refreshes the soul. With more than 90,500 visitors within the last fiscal year and over 20 acres of developed Gardens, we’re so grateful for your support and we can’t do this without YOU! Green Bay Botanical Garden is YOUR garden. It is here to provide you, your family and your friends the opportunity to explore nature, to learn about plants and the environment, to create memories together, to celebrate life and its many stages, and to relax and enjoy the gardens and a multitude of activities and events in your community. Together we keep the Garden growing for our own enjoyment and that of future generations. It’s our goal to raise $200,000 through our annual campaign this year to ensure that the Garden continues to grow for you, your family, friends and generations to come. We are happy to report that with the launch of this year’s annual campaign, we have received support from 100% of our staff and board members again! As a private 501(c)(3) organization, the Garden doesn’t receive any local, state or federal government funding. Therefore we rely solely on the generosity of our members, visitors, friends and community for support. To make your tax-deductible donation today, please return the enclosed envelope, visit www.gbbg.org to donate online or contact me at 920-491-3691 ext. 104 to donate over the phone. Don’t forget to make your investment by December 31st to receive a deduction when filing your 2014 taxes. Also, did you know that many employers provide a corporate matching gift to your tax-deductible contributions? Some companies match 2:1 or even 3:1 meaning that your donation is doubled or tripled in your name. To find out if your company matches donations, contact your human resources department. Some companies even match the donations of their retirees! Thank you for your investment in this recreational and educational gem within the Green Bay community!

Thanks to a grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board, guests can now snowshoe at the Garden throughout the winter months! Snowshoes are free for all with Garden admission and will be available during regular business hours (when an adequate amount of snow is present). We have sizes suitable for kids (5 years and older) and adults. We just ask that guests simply leave a driver’s license at the desk in exchange for a pair of snowshoes. Get out and enjoy the snow at the Garden this year!

Enjoy a Living Christmas Tree this Season! By Kelle Hartman, Children & Family Educator

30 Year Founding Members Over thirty years ago, a group of individuals gathered to turn a dream into a reality. They had a vision and through hard work and tenacity, they helped to build the Garden. GBBG is grateful for their continued advice, counsel, friendship and support that ensures that the Garden’s vision continues to evolve and remain an important community asset to northeast Wisconsin for the next thirty years and beyond. GBBG’s founding members have generously developed and supported the mission of the Garden. Through their passion, determination and hard work, their vision for the Garden became a reality and with your help it continues to exceed their expectations. We ask you, our supporters, to continue on this journey with us! “Ken and I have supported the Garden for many years and have enjoyed seeing all of the improvements each year. The horticulturists do an outstanding job making this happen. Our granddaughter from Arizona so loved GBBG that she got married here.” ~ Ivy Nelson “We chose to support the Garden because we have always dreamed of having a beautiful Botanical Garden in Green Bay where people of all ages could come and learn about plants and enjoy their beauty.” ~ Lee & Louise Hansen

Four years ago my husband and I moved into a newly built house and had a baby. As Christmas drew near, we wanted to start our own holiday traditions as a new family. We decided to start purchasing living Christmas trees. With an empty yard to landscape this meant we could have the pine scent of a real tree for the holidays and after it was planted in the yard, our family could enjoy it for years to come. While they take a bit more planning than an artificial or cut tree, as gardeners, what better gift to give ourselves for Christmas! Here are some tips I’ve learned from my experience: • Decide where the tree will be planted and dig the hole in the fall before the frost. • Shop end of season sales for the best prices! As living trees have grown in popularity, spruce trees are marked up before Christmas. • Heel the tree into its hole under a layer of mulch or straw until ready to bring inside. Continue to water until the frost. • Potted trees will break dormancy if moved into the warm house for too long. It’s best to keep them inside for only about a week to 10 days. Allow the tree about a week in a garage or porch to acclimate before and after being inside. Begin to water it again during this time. • Heel the pot back into place after Christmas. • On a warm day after the ground begins to thaw, plant your Christmas tree, water it often and watch it grow!

Update from our Director of Horticulture With winter around the corner, fall is a very busy time of the year for us here at GBBG. We completed planting over 50,000 spring blooming bulbs in October. Come out and see them in May of 2015! Staff and volunteers began setting up the 300,000 bulbs that make up the WPS Garden of Lights (GOL) in October and also cut back the perennials on 20 areas of gardens. We caged our tree peonies and wrapped many of our magnolias to prevent critter damage over the winter. We take time to prune our woody plants, and typically an arborist is scheduled in November to do the climbing work we cannot do in-house. Fall is also the time of the year when we spend the most time controlling woody invasive species, especially exotic honeysuckles and buckthorn on the 27 acres of natural areas at GBBG. NWTC students cleared our irrigation lines to keep them from freezing and we pulled the pumps from the Children’s Garden Pond, the King Shade Garden, and the Arendt Conifer Garden and stored them for the winter. The Mable Thome fountain is also drained and covered. Of course, we also raked leaves and mowed the turf a final time just like you did at home. Our staff and volunteers put the final touches on the ornaments that will decorate the Fischer Visitor Center and Schneider Education Center during WPS Garden of Lights. Once the snow arrives we have plenty of shoveling and plowing, but we will also be planning the 2015 garden. This includes selecting, ordering, planting, and growing almost 20,000 annuals. We choose and procure perennials and woody ornamentals, and will decide where to move the many tress that are currently in the footprint of GBBG’s next project - The Grand Garden. We also maintain, repair, and spruce up all of our equipment during the winter months. Our team of horticulturists will enter all of the information about what we planted this year into our collections management database BGBase. They will then produce the next batch of permanent labels which should catch the entire garden up to now having permanent labels. As you can see, there is a lot to be done and we stay busy year-round! A team of staff & volunteers celebrate the planting of the 50,875th bulb!

Wednesday, year-round. She enjoys the challenge of keeping up with the multitude of changes at the front desk. Barb has willing hands and a big heart doing whatever needs to be done with little supervision. Her passion for the Garden comes through her friendliness, upbeat attitude and willingness to assist our guests and staff whenever needed.

Horticulture Volunteers of the Year: Jim Tubbs annually volunteers some of the most hours. Whether it is felling a tree, falling in or out of a hole or telling a joke, Jim’s presence lasts well after he leaves. He does many physically demanding tasks like chainsawing and parking cars in the brutal cold, and has helped GBBG through transitions in leadership, designing our further garden expansion and more.

Carol Zellner is an extremely hard worker and brings a certain ‘sass’ and sense of humor to our everyday adventures. Her shining personality brings a smile to everyone’s face when she walks in the door. Carol regularly volunteers three days a week. In this time, she has endured planting bulbs in the pouring rain, risked her life weeding and has literally put her blood, sweat, and tears into the pruning and fertilizing of the Garden’s hundreds of roses.

important role in education during his many years and roles at the garden. He was an early supporter of developing horticultural labels for the plants on display and has served on the Education Committee to help develop adult programing as well as teaching several of the classes himself. Since retiring, he has taken his service to the next level by providing guided tours for adult groups and serving on the Board of Directors among many other duties.

and beyond by volunteering for six events. She volunteers until every last task is completed, even if that means staying late. In her spare time, Bonnie took the Wisconsin Responsible Beverage Server course to become a licensed bartender so she could help volunteer at GBBG events. Bonnie gives so much of herself to the garden and we are so grateful for her passion and enthusiasm!

Bill Jones has been our go-to Wednesday cookout griller since 2009. Every Wednesday for the past 6 years, June through August, Bill helped grill up delicious food for our visitors to benefit the educational programs at GBBG. Without Bill’s commitment, we would not be able to host this fundraiser. Bill brings a warm smile to everyone’s face as they enjoy the warm summer breeze while eating lunch at the Garden. Liz Obenberger is not afraid to get down and dirty literally. From doing the dishes at every Soup with Substance series this past fiscal year to keeping the admission line tamed at WPS Garden of Lights, Liz does it all. Liz has volunteered for seven events and is willing to pitchin where needed. She is so giving of her time to the Garden and always makes sure every guest has a great experience.
