James Cook University School of Creative Arts
The Student Experience As a Creative Arts student you have the opportunity to explore your creativity, and discover new and exciting forms of expression and innovation. The School of Creative Arts supports you to do this with specialist studios, computer labs and rehearsal spaces that are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a full-time student you will typically spend 12 to 15 hours per week in classes, after which you can explore your creativity and inspiration. That might be talking to or working with your peers, working in the studio, making use of the outstanding facilities in the library, or letting the natural environment around the campus inspire you. You will have access to up-to-date hardware and software. You can borrow from our extensive range of photographic, sound or video equipment, and work in project teams around the campus or as an individual artist pursuing a creative goal. There is no extra charge for using our stateof-the-art equipment, and you can complete your subjects without having to purchase your own.
Your teachers will encourage you to get involved in a range of extra-curricular activities such as performances, exhibitions and social events. We are a friendly School, with staff available to help. Students who reach the fourth year Honours program often work with staff in research projects and collaborations, which can progress through to Masters and PhD programs. In addition to time on campus, you will have access to a range of community arts events and organisations in northern Queensland, where there are a wide variety of arts groups, festivals, events, performances and exhibitions. Some of these include the On Edge contemporary media and performance festival in Cairns, and the See Hear Now contemporary sound and music festival in Townsville. Add to that a program of exhibitions and events presented at galleries, including the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Umbrella Studios, KickArts, the Tanks Arts Centre and the Cairns Regional Gallery. Cairns and Townsville sustain a wealth of creative expertise and opportunity.

Initially I started my degree wanting to be a graphic designer, but I have never looked back since that first class. Plus I love the fact you can be 100 per cent ‘you’, doing what you love and being surrounded by people who share your passion. My highlight at JCU would have to be my third year. By that stage you know what to do, how to do it, and are passionate to create work that will help you make it in the real world. You also feel part of the big picture, as an artist and a graduating student. Living on campus means you feel like your college and faculty are your family. Early this year I started my own business in Cairns. Later in the year I will take up a special invitation from a prestigious wedding photography and videography company in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, to be part of their team. From there I will expand my portfolio, save up, then start my travelling photography career in America.

Diploma of Creative Arts The Diploma of Creative Arts is a flexible course that enables students to explore either one creative arts area, or sample a range of areas from new media, digital imagery, music, visual arts, performance, design, art theory and criticism. Students can build a study plan that is focussed or broadly based. The Diploma of Creative Arts is a respected qualification in its own right. Additionally, on the successful completion of the diploma, you can continue into a degree program and receive credit for successfully completed subjects. Certificate of Photography This Certificate enables students to gain foundation skills in both the capture of photographic images and the processes involved in image manipulation. Bachelor of New Media Arts (Photomedia) This course offers a balance of practice and theory for careers in digital imaging and photography. You will learn the principles and practice of digital photographic capture, both on location and in the studio, as well as digital image processing and output.
