from the publisher The environmental movement is facing serious challenges. George Monbiot writes in The Guardian that the process of preventing climate change “is dead”, and says: “All I know is that we must stop dreaming about an institutional response that will never materialise and start facing a political reality we’ve sought to avoid.” Nevertheless, we need to continue to tackle the huge problems we face, at both the individual and global levels. In different times and in a different context, E. F. Schumacher said: “Can we rely on it that a ‘turning around’ will be accomplished by enough people quickly enough to save the modern world? This question is often asked, but no matter what the answer, it will mislead. The answer ‘Yes’ would lead to complacency, the answer ‘No’ to despair. It is desirable to leave these perplexities behind us and get down to work.” Here at Green Books we continue to get down to work. Once again we have some wonderful books that will inspire and inform on subjects which – some directly, some indirectly – address the key issues of climate change and resilience, including books on Transition, gardening, renewable energy and the economic system. From the highly respected gardener and author Charles Dowding we have How to Grow Winter Vegetables, to follow on from his Organic Gardening: The natural no-dig way and Salad Leaves. From Dave Hamilton, co-author with his twin brother of The Self-Sufficientish Bible, we have Grow Your Food for Free (Well, Almost). About fifteen years ago we co-published with the pioneering environmental charity Common Ground a series of poetry books on the themes of trees, rivers and fields, and we are now delighted to be publishing their Community Orchards Handbook, which is an indispensable resource for any individual or group aiming to set up an community orchard. In 2011 the United Nations is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Bengali and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. A Taste of Tagore, compiled by Meron Shapland, is a new selection of his writings, bringing his inspirational work to a fresh audience.
2011 also marks the centenary of the birth of E. F. Schumacher, author of Small is Beautiful. We shall be publishing the Schumacher Briefing Small is Beautiful in the 21st Century: the Legacy of Fritz Schumacher, by Diana Schumacher, and also bringing back into print Alias Papa, the excellent biography of Schumacher written by his eldest daughter Barbara Wood. From Jon Reeds we have Smart Growth, which looks at the history of planning in the UK and the potential of the Smart Growth principles that have been pioneered in the USA, which could be used to bring about more compact and liveable cities and reduce urban sprawl. The Irish economic think-tank FEASTA has produced some excellent books over the years, and their latest is Fleeing Vesuvius: Overcoming economic and environmental collapse, edited by Richard Douthwaite and Gillian Fallon. From Chelsea Green we have The Case Against Fluoride by Drs Paul Connett, James Beck and H. S. Micklem, which brings new research to light showing that water fluoridation is potentially hazardous to health; Slow Money by Woody Tasch, which looks at the potential for investing in food and farming after the recent global financial collapse; Masonry Heaters by Ken Matesz; A Solar Buyer’s Guide for the Home and Office by Stephen and Rebekah Hren; The Resilient Gardener by Carol Deppe, showing how we can garden in a time of climate change; Holy Shit: Managing manure to save mankind by Gene Logsdon; and Growing, Older by Joan Gussow, who is still growing all her own food at the age of eighty. We also have an inspiring book about the Tamera eco village in Portugal, an international training organisation and experimental site where over 200 people live in a pioneering community, working with the aim of ‘thinking locally and acting globally’. We are in the process of making e-book versions of most of our current titles, in both PDF and ePub formats. They can be ordered through Gardners’ Digital Warehouse.

APRIL 2011 Green Books ISBN 978 1 900322 88 1 234mm x 170mm 192pp full colour £14.95 pb CONTENTS A forgotten season The winter’s scene Vegetables for winter The plot in winter
“Charles is a passionate and accomplished gardener who grows vegetables of amazing flavour.” Raymond Blanc This book explains how to come through winter with plenty of vegetables stored and others ready for harvest, and gives advice for growing plants through winter for eating during the ‘hungry gap’ from April to early June. Winter and early spring require a different kind of gardening from that of the summer months: not a lot grows at this time, but a well-planned plot may nonetheless be quite full. Vegetables need to be sown and planted at specific times – so the book’s middle section is a monthly sowing, planting and growing calendar. The next part covers month-by-month harvesting, from garlic in July to spring cabbage and pea shoots in May.
Looking after soil Making compost What to grow for winter Seasonal sowing, planting and growing calendars Winter harvest calendar Stored harvests
Many salads can be grown in winter, especially with a little protection from fleece and cloches. The book includes examples of frost-hardy salad plants and other vegetables, with best sowing dates and harvesting methods. The beauty of winter and its produce is captured in photographs from the author’s garden.

FEBRUARY 2011 Green Books with Common Ground ISBN 978 1 900322 92 8 210mm x 148mm 228pp full colour £14.95 pb Contents What are community orchards? The place of orchards in our landscape and culture
“This wonderful book is an invaluable source of information for anyone interested in community, locally produced food, and preserving and planting orchards. It is a ‘must’ for anyone who cares about these things.” Rosie Sanders, artist and author of The Apple Book “Common Ground’s Community Orchards Handbook is a rich and diverse ecosystem in itself, at once practical and lyrical, with elegy and energy intertwined. It’s a handbook to be revelled in as much as dipped into for the handy hints.” Jonathon Porritt
Planting a community orchard Adopting an old orchard Conserving and attracting wildlife What to do with the harvest Celebration Safeguarding your orchard Orchard fruits and wild fruits Appendices: Choosing the right legal structure Model constitution Groups and support organisations Nurseries and equipment Funding
Since the 1950s we have lost 60 per cent of our orchards through development or neglect, and even though there are 3,000 varieties of apple in England, we import 70 per cent of apples sold in shops. Despite this loss there is a growing interest in establishing community orchards – local projects run by local people, providing locally grown fruits and nuts. The Community Orchards Handbook shows groups and individuals how to start their own community orchard, from getting support, tackling legal issues and access to organising working parties and selling produce. It gives suggestions on ‘apple mapping’ and saving local varieties, and of course it gives practical advice on planting, harvesting and safeguarding your orchard. It includes a comprehensive resources section and examples of successful community orchard projects across the UK. Sue Clifford and Angela King are the founder-directors of Common Ground, a pioneering environmental charity playing a unique role in the arts and environmental fields. Their inspiring projects include Apple Day, Parish Maps and the Campaign for Local Distinctiveness. For more information see www.commonground.org.uk.

smart growth From sprawl to sustainability
Jon Reeds
february 2011 Green Books ISBN 978 1 900322 82 9 234mm x 156mm 288pp b&w £12.95 pb CONTENTS PART I – How we got here A squandered land • Decline and sprawl – a century of spatial planning • The death and life of great British cities PART II – Where we are An unsustainable communities plan • Climate change • America – land of dreams PART III – Where we need to be Care and maintenance of a small country – smart growth planning • Smart Growth transport • A Smart Growth vision
This book shows how urban sprawl is unsustainable in an age of climate change and peak oil, and challenges the UK to develop a ‘Smart Growth’ approach to improve the quality of life in our overcrowded island. People who live in compact traditional towns have far smaller environmental footprints than those who live in sprawling suburbs. But is urban sprawl inevitable? Are there better ways of getting about? And can 60 million people crammed into a land bulging at the seams ever find ways of treating it with respect? Smart Growth argues that we should look for the answer to America – the country that embraced urban sprawl and car dependency on a far grander scale than we ever did. There is much we can learn from its ‘Smart Growth’ movement, which is successfully arguing for compact cities, rail-based transit systems and restoring communities ruined by decades of self-centred suburban life. Jon Reeds is an environmental journalist who has worked alongside planners and written about town and transport planning for nearly 40 years. In 2006 he helped found Smart Growth UK, a national coalition engaged in promoting Smart Growth principles as a way of bringing a strong sustainable development ethos into the way we plan spatial development, transport and communities.
“We in the UK have spent the last 100 years pursuing urban sprawl relentlessly, spurred on by a fuzzy nostalgia for our ancestors’ rural past, by a desire to live in the countryside the sprawl destroys, by a widely held belief that low-density garden city or garden suburb living is good for us, and by a retreat from community into individualism.” “We need to look beyond the ‘dumb growth’ world we’re still creating. For a Smart Growth nation would be a very different nation a few decades from now, and it’s worth seeing how. We have much to gain even if we have to give up a few long-cherished dreams, for these dreams have become nightmares.” Jon Reeds

The author: Matt Harvey performs throughout the UK at festivals, conferences and colleges. He is founder of Wondermentalist, the comedy-infused, musically enhanced poetry cabaret with resident superhero. He is a regular on Radio 4’s Saturday Live, and in 2010 was the first-ever Poet in Residence at Wimbledon.

The uncomfortable truth about biodiversity
Ken Thompson “It’s about time someone wrote a genuinely readable book about biodiversity. Thank goodness for Ken Thompson, who has done it with a rare mixture of biological mastery, good common sense and writer’s flair. Essential reading.” Mark Carwardine, BBC zoologist
AVAILABLE NOW Green Books ISBN 978 1 900322 86 7 234mm x 156mm 160pp b&w £9.95 pb
How much do we really know about the species that make up the natural world and how they interrelate? Ken Thompson explains what we do and don’t understand about biodiversity, and asks what we should be doing to secure the survival not only of the species with which we share the planet, but of ourselves – and whether we need to be more concerned about ecosystems as a whole than about iconic species. The author: Dr Ken Thompson recently retired as Senior Research Fellow and Honorary Senior Lecturer of the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield. He is author of several books, including The Book of Weeds, and co-author of The Ecology of Seeds.

The author: John Lane, aged 80, is a painter, writer and educationalist. LIFELINES Selected drawings of Truda Lane
AVAILABLE NOW Resurgence ISBN 978 1 900322 95 9 200mm x 200mm 72pp colour and b&w £10.00 pb
This series of drawings by long-standing Resurgence artist Truda Lane evokes the magic of natural landscapes and of our inner worlds. In her simple but highly tensile compositions there is an economy of wash and hints of colour that seem to spring naturally from the drawing itself. The subjects are simple, graphic, often severe, and intensely poetic. One can sense Truda’s fascination and conversancy with an inner world and its store of traditional reference and meaning. There are stories abroad; magic; spellbound moments frozen from folk tale, with all their ambivalence of light and dark.

Valerie Belsey is a highway historian. She gained her love of exploring country lanes from her father, who thought nothing of cycling from London to Combe Martin and back for the weekend – a round trip of 395 miles! Valerie managed a government project on green lanes in the 1980s and her book The Green Lanes of England was her first on the subject of green lanes. She later worked for Devon County Council as the only ‘historic monuments surveyor’. She is an ardent enthusiast and archivist for our countryside.
