The “real” world often comes faster than expected for most college students. You enter into a program, take the required courses and suddenly you find yourself searching for a job. Before you get to that point, consider spending some time testing the waters. Like most employers, those committed to the environment are looking for candidates with relevant experience and training. Employing almost 2 million people in over 400 career fields, the Federal Government offers more options than any other single employer in the United States. Within those options there are a large number and broad range of positions that are related to the environment, making the Federal Government the perfect place to get your toes wet and possibly jump start your career. WHERE TO SEARCH Providing the most thorough and comprehensive information for federal employment opportunities are the USAJobs website (www.usajobs.gov) and the Partnership for Public Service’s site for federal jobs and internships (www.makingthedifference.org). As the central database for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), “federal agencies post all competitive service jobs, including temporary, part time and seasonal positions” on the USAJobs site, says Dean Scrutton with the OPM. The site allows you to search by location, agency, occupation, or a combination, allowing you to find a position that best fits your expertise and interests. Jody Lyle, a public affairs specialist with the National Park Service, suggests checking the site often as “new positions open regularly.” An extension website to USAJobs is the OPM’s student focused site, www.studentjobs.gov. The site “provides an excellent resource for internships, fellowships, entry level positions and other student centered programs,” says Scrutton. The Partnership for Public Service is a nonprofit organization whose intention is to revitalize the federal government by “inspiring a new generation of civil servants and transforming the way government works.” The web site provides information on co-op jobs, internships and opportunities for fellows and student ambassadors. The Internship Directory (makingthedifference.org/ federalinternships/directory) provides information on over 200 federal internship programs and is searchable by field

of interest, location and agency preference. Be general and flexible in your search to discover the widest array of opportunities. Using a combination of these sites will assure that you leave no stone unturned in your search. In addition, they will provide you with the right tools to help make your search less daunting. A resume builder that helps you create a standardized resume that includes all of the crucial information required for a Federal application, a link that helps you to match your field of study with a Federal job title, an information center that walks you through the hiring process, including tips for your resume, and other resources to help you determine the best fit for you can be found on all three. Directly approaching Federal Government agencies through their individual web sites or by phone can also help you learn about available openings. Although this approach will be a bit more time consuming, human resource specialists at respective agencies can be extremely helpful in matching individual skills to a job and directing you to openings quickly. And since agencies are not required to post internships on the OPM’s job board, this route may provide you with additional information on available positions as well opportunities through special hiring programs.

Several agencies have established unique summer opportunities and internships through these programs making it easier for those qualified to obtain a summer position. The Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP) was designed to recruit talented individuals to federal government internship positions. Agencies design their own FCIP, but all participants in the program receive training in a two year entry level appointment. After the two years, participants can become permanent employees. A directory of some FCIP’s is available through a link on the Partnership for Public Service’s web site. AGENCIES LOOKING FOR YOUR EXPERTISE Over time environmental stewardship has spread to almost every branch and sector of the government. While the role of some Federal agencies is obviously tied to the environment (Environmental Protection Agency and The National Park Service), the involvement of other agencies is more subtle. Limiting your search to the obvious will greatly decrease the number of opportunities you find. The following list of (obvious and subtle) agencies, work to protect our environment:

STUDENT HIRING PROGRAMS The Student Educational Employment Program provides Federal employment opportunities to students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical, vocational, 2 or 4 year college or university, graduate or professional school. There are two sections to this program, the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) and the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). STEP allows for flexibility in that the position does not have to be related to the academic or career goals of the student. This provides students the chance to gain experience in other fields. Through SCEP, the provided work experience is directly related to the student’s academic program and career goals. Some positions filled through this program provide academic credit toward the student’s degree. SCEP also allows for the placement of students into term or career appointments after they have completed their academic and work experience requirements. Both Student Educational Employment Programs allow students to earn money, train with experts, and enhance

The EPA employs 17,000 engineers, scientists, policy analysts, and specialists in the fields of law, public affairs, finance, information management and computers, across the country. National Park Service - www.nps.gov The National Park Service was created in 1916. Approximately 20,000 diverse professionals are employed with the NPS in permanent, temporary and seasonal positions. Dress for Eco-Fashion Success Designer By Ambre Kohl Tomlinson

Green is a term that is usually associated with solar energy or hybrid vehicles but it is much more than that. Those who live a green life incorporate environmentally conscious practices into every aspect of their lives, even the clothing they choose to wear. The fashion industry has come a long way and now there is a choice for the green “shop-till you-dropper”. Fashion designers all over the country are developing lines of clothing that are good for not only the trendsetter but for the environmental activist as well. Don’t be fooled that this is a small venture; this line of thinking has already made it to New York’s infamous fashion week. Many designers even agreed to avoid fur and use only post-consumer recycled paper for invitations. From Heatherette to Diane von Furstenberg famous designers are reducing their carbon footprint. We can be sure that no goofy, shapeless mounds of fabric will come from the likes of these fashion forward icons. The themes are still trendy and/or classic made from materials of the best quality but now there is a green twist. Designers like Lynda Grose and Bahar Shahpar realize the importance of looking good, feeling good and making the environment feel the same all at once. Grose, eco-fashion pioneer, helped put together Esprit’s Ecollection. It was the first completely green clothing line distributed by a major corporation and it first appeared in the early ‘90s. Though the Ecollection was discontinued, Grose now teaches an eco-fashion course at the California College of the Arts and works with the Sustainable Cotton Project, helping to educate manufacturers about organic and sustainable options. Shahpar’s collection is made from environmentally sound textiles like organic wool, and even a type of silk harvested from discarded cocoons. Karen Stewart and Howard Brown, a couple as well as business partners produce their own casual clothing line called Stewart + Brown using eco-friendly materials and they donate 1 percent of all their sales to environmental organizations through 1% for the Planet. What serves as more of an inspiration than our own musical activist Bono who recently launched a clothing line with wife Ali Hewson? Bono, Hewson and clothing designer Rogan Gregory launched Edun in the spring of 2005. It is a profit business but it is founded on the ideals of trade not aid and nurtures sustainable communities. By encouraging business in Africa, it provides financial growth that helps more African countries become self sufficient and less dependent on aid. All Edun’s t-shirts are made from 100% organic cotton. There is a growing demand for organic cotton, which offers an environmentally and socially sustainable alternative.

ORGANIC COTTON: Produced in largely rain fed areas to reduce misappropriation of river waters, sprayed with chili, garlic and soap rather than chemicals and pesticides that are harmful to the environment, this in turn saves the farmer from spending gross amounts on these chemicals.

Is Your Future Blowing in the Wind? By Sabine Rogers

The power of the wind is much more than what can be seen by looking at the leaves on a tree as they rustle in the breeze. The wind’s power has the ability to level structures; move a semi from the road; or even rip that tree, whose leaves you were watching rustle, right out of the ground. It can also be controlled into a clean, sustainable, and affordable source of energy to meet a portion of the demands of electric use in the United States today and into the future. The History of Wind and its Emerging Power The concept of harnessing the wind and utilizing its energy has been around for thousands of years. Sailboats and ships led the way using wind for propulsion. Shortly after, architects utilized the wind for ventilation in early buildings. The notion of utilizing the wind to produce mechanical power, with windmills, arrived on the scene in the 7th century. These windmills were used for grinding grain and operating irrigation pumps. It was in the late 19th century that the first windmill used to produce electricity was built. This modern equivalent of the windmill is better known as the wind turbine. Nineteen fifty-four marks the year in which the first wind turbine connected to a utility grid was operated. The wind turbine converts the winds kinetic energy into mechanical energy which is then directly converted to electricity. The electricity then flows through underground lines to a collection point or further on to a substation for widespread distribution. Although the design of the wind turbine advanced dramatically in the 20th century, this era also led to the age of oil and industrialization. Network power expanded into what were once rural areas of the country and the use of wind energy declined. Since this time the popularity of wind energy has fluctuated with the price of fossil fuels. As the price of fuel fell after World War II so did interest in wind energy. In turn, attention to wind energy increased when the oil embargoes of the 1970s sent oil prices soaring. The research and development since the 70s has advanced wind turbine technology ideas and brought about new ways to convert wind energy into usable power. Christine Real de Azua, with the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), says a US Department of Energy study shows

that “wind could provide 20% of the United States electricity by 2030” and that “no technological breakthroughs are needed [to reach that percentage] nor is that a ceiling”. Wind’s Power on the Economy During the last year of economic uncertainty, wind energy has remained a strong force in driving the economy without causing pollution, producing hazardous waste, or reducing our natural resources. With ongoing technological advances and refinements, wind will have the ability to compete economically with coal and oil. It will do so not only with the benefit of being environmentally friendly, but with the promise of sustainable jobs. Currently the wind industry of the United States directly employs over 2,000 people. In addition approximately 48,000 are employed indirectly through products and services required to build, transport, install, and operate turbines. AWEA recently reported that the manufacturing base for wind energy is expanding quickly, thus “creating jobs and fostering investment and growth even in a difficult financial climate.” Greater investment in wind generated energy will yield more jobs in an array of disciplines, including manufacturing and engineering, environmental and consulting services, as well as marketing. Where the Jobs Are… Consider the end result of clean wind energy, and it can be said that every job from production of individual turbine parts to operation and maintenance of wind projects is green. Combine that with the Department of Energy’s report, 20% Wind Energy by 2030, and the result is over 500,000 green jobs being created and supported by the wind industry over the next 21 years. “The wind industry is a very diversified industry in terms of it depending upon a lot of different skill sets, a lot of areas of expertise,“ says Dr. Jonathan Miles of James Madison University’s College of Integrated Science and Technology. “Although it might be the temptation for people who aren’t familiar with the industry to assume that it picks up engineers and science majors and such,” Miles

continues, “as you dig into the industry you can understand how important it is to attract attorneys into the field, and people with business backgrounds, and people who understand economics, and people who understand geography and land use.” The division of the wind industry that is likely to provide the most opportunities is in the manufacturing, installation and operation of wind turbines. The manufacturing plants that produce blades, towers, and gearboxes will hire engineers for positions as plant managers, manufacturing engineers and quality assurance staff. The same plants will need people with computer science, aerodynamics, atmospheric science, and math degrees for research and development positions. This division of the wind industry will also provide service sector jobs to people trained as technicians and in operations maintenance for positions required after the installation of the produced turbines. Real de Azua says the current demand for wind technicians is “tremendous”. Prior to turbine installation, resource and environmental assessments must be made. Site selection for wind turbines is based on the availability of wind or wind resource at the particular site. People with expertise in atmospheric science or meteorology will be needed to analyze wind patterns, predict the output of energy a particular location will produce, and from that provide technical information to sustain sitechoice selections. Once a site is selected for its wind resource, it must then be further studied for the impact the wind power facility may have on the surrounding environment. The effect of the turbines on drinking water, vegetation and wildlife will need to be determined by people with degrees in biology or environmental science. Beyond the manufacturing, installation and operation of wind turbines is the need for financial, administrative and communications support for current and future wind projects. From business

Designing a Green Wardrobe Advice on College Programs focusing on Eco-Fashion Designing By Lauren Grochmal

Can I save the world through fashion? You bet!. Those jeans you wear everyday and the dozens of t-shirts, tank tops, and sweaters in your closet can make a difference. These days many designers and brand name stores are choosing more sustainable textiles; organic cotton, which reduces pesticides in the environment, and hemp for its strength and longevity. However, we as consumers may only see the certified organic tag hanging on the garment on a store rack. Before the shirt is stitched together, before the fabric is cut, before the sketch is ever drawn, there is a process that takes place that shoppers never see. This is the design process. And it is changing. Moving from lazily stitched trendy throw away garments to timeless yet versatile items, designers are choosing sustainable over the traditional. However, Stella McCartney, known for her ethical vegan shoe line or the organic designers at Loomstate likely do not have degrees in Eco-Fashion. While the fashion and textile industry are certainly taking steps towards becoming more green, academia is beginning to integrate fashion and ecological responsibility as well. One university offers a dedicated degree in eco-fashion and many more offer classes in sustainable design. The London College of Fashion opened the Centre for Sustainable Design in 2008. In line with the Centre’s mission, the College now offers a Master of Arts in Fashion and the Environment. This degree seeks to challenge “current practice while using design and research to change the landscape of the fashion industry” and can be pursued after obtaining an undergraduate fashion degree. For a Bachelors degree, an aspiring eco-fashion designer can choose a school that offers courses in sustainable design. Susan Taber Avila, associate professor in the design program at the University of California, says that students who have taken sustainability courses rethink the design process. The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), in New York City, offers several classes that could supplement the traditional fashion courses including Ecology and the Built Environment and Sustainable Packaging Design. Even if the design school you choose does not yet offer sustainability classes in design, opt for classes that give you a better understanding of our ecological impact. Anything from environmental science to landscape architecture to environmental policy or planning gets the mind thinking about the impact a garment has from cradle to grave. FIT also organized the 2008 Business and Design Conference. This year’s topic was “Designing Sustainability as the New Cultural Paradigm.” Parson’s The New School for Design, holds an annual Sustainable Design Review competition for all its students. The themes vary year to year, but the $2,500 grand prize encourages students to forge new ideas beyond organic cotton t-shirts. Both of these events provide access to current industry professionals and opportunities to network for potential internships and employers. Other notable design schools to consider that are beginning to offer a range of sustainability classes and events include the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University, the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Most importantly, no matter what design school you attend, you can create your own sustainable fashion design experience by the courses you choose, conferences you attend, and internships and extracurricular activities you pursue.

Industries across America are being permeated by the new green economy. Erratic energy prices and the unstable financial market of the past year are forcing us to rethink how we power our homes and businesses. As we look to renewable energies to increase energy efficiency and lessen our dependence on fossil fuels, new comers to the job market and career changers are presented with exceptional opportunities to green up their careers and our future. The recent extension of the solar tax credit (a credit for 30% of the cost of the system), removal of the financial cap on the credit, along with the greening economy has put Solar Energy Technician on the exceptional opportunity list. Gregory McNamee, author of Careers in Renewable Energy, supports this outlook in his book when he writes, “demand [for solar technicians] is expected to exceed supply considerably over at least the next decade.” A variety of solar technologies utilize the sun’s rays to generate heat, light, hot water, electricity and even cooling for both residential and commercial projects. Solar technologies can be integrated into the design of buildings as they are constructed or added to long-standing buildings during renovation. From start to finish, the process of every solar energy project requires the expertise of several technicians with varying skills. Construction trades including electricians, mechanical engineers, plumbers, carpenters, roofers, and sheet metal workers help to define the all encompassing title of Solar Energy Technician. Their knowledge and skill is required for the design, installation, maintenance, operation, testing and repair of the equipment and energy systems that utilize solar energy. Training in solar energy technology can be attained through trade associations, vocational schools and colleges. Resulting in a certificate or degree, these programs can take from 2 weeks to 2 years to complete. The coursework includes system design, installation, maintenance, remodeling or retro-fitting, photovoltaics, solar thermal systems and solar architecture. Construction trades and high school graduates interested in the installation or repair of solar systems should enroll in fundamental training courses (i.e. installation or maintenance) to get themselves on track. Obviously an individual fresh out of high school will require more training than an experienced construction trade. If design, planning or research is your goal, attaining an associate degree from a community college or vocational school should be your focus. The coursework for an associate degree in one of these disciplines will include more advanced classes like solar architecture and building energy analysis. Another route is an apprenticeship with a professional organization like the National Association of Home Builders. Combining on the job training with a formal classroom education, a program of this nature will take between 3 to 5 years to complete. Although a more lengthy undertaking than the traditional route, an apprenticeship can provide you with real time, hands on experience that you won’t find in a classroom. Working as a Solar Energy Technician can literally be a hot job. Installation and maintenance involve working in direct sunlight that in some parts of the country can reach upwards of 100 degrees. If you can stand the heat and adapt to the constant change and advancement of solar technology, a position as a solar energy technician may be that exceptional opportunity for you to soak up the sun. 9

As wind power continues to define itself on the energy stage the need for more individuals with the ability to educate the next generation of wind experts becomes more apparent. AWEA and the Department of Energy have individually created two programs to bring wind energy education to the forefront, and universities in 21 states currently offer academic programs and technical training for those interested in wind energy. As the path to a more sustainable future continues these programs will undoubtedly grow as will the need for individuals to run them.

Getting Your Foot in the Door You have a chance of landing a job in the wind industry if you have earned, or are on your way to earning one of the degrees mentioned above. “People need to think about what they are interested in and think about how that might be useful to a wind energy company or be applied within a huge range of possible careers” Real de Azua adds. “Chances are you are going to be able to find a job [in the wind industry] that will fit some of your interests and qualifications”. A good place to start searching for information about the wind energy industry is on AWEA’s website, www.awea.org. Here you can find a host of information to assist you on your search including a job board, wind web tutorial, and information guide. Careersinwind.com is AWEA’s job search web site for wind energy opportunities. The site includes; job announcements, a list of upcoming wind energy workshops put on by AWEA, and will soon include information for career changers on how they can transfer their skills and expertise to the wind industry. Real de Azua says AWEA’s job board “only lists some of the jobs being offered” and suggests “that people look at the sites of some of the individual companies”. A list of AWEA member companies is available on the web site. If the wind energy industry is where you decide to make your career, knowing all you can will benefit you. Industry insiders suggest learning the basics of the industry and the lingo (it’s called a wind turbine, not a windmill) will assist you when you are asked to come in for an interview or simply find yourself in a conversation with someone in the industry. The Wind Web Tutorial (http://www.awea.org/faq) along with the news link on the AWEA web site can get you started with some basic information and help keep you informed of the latest, most accurate news on wind energy. As with any job search having prior experience on your resume is beneficial. The Association for the Advancement for Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) recently concluded their national conference, which took place at the recently opened Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina from November 9-11. The conference, entitled “Working Together for Sustainability – On Campus and Beyond,” attracted industry and academic audiences from across the nation, bringing them together to discuss the future of sustainability on campuses and their associated communities. The conference was a huge success, highlighting many of the green developments that colleges and universities across the country are initiating. Participants also got to hear from encouraging and motivating speakers such as Lester Brown and Van Jones. On Tuesday November 11th, the Green Careers Center hosted the Green Careers Seminar. With a cross section of the sustainable employers, each panelist gave insight to the audience on how to best pursue and land a great green career. Not only did Fort Bragg, North Carolina, win national recognition from the US Green Building Council last year, but he displayed a map dotted with Army sustainability success stories all across the nation. Moderator, John Esson, pointed out that the ORISE program provides a career path for college students and recent graduates to work in diverse and challenging sustainability, natural resources and environmental programs. Graduate Research Assistantship - Biogeochemical and Hydrological Cycling in Terrestrial Ecosystems. North Carolina. Community Ecology. The Clark lab in the Nicholas School of the Environment is a seeking technician at least through the 2009 field season. These are full-time (40h/week) temporary positions with an initial hiring period of six months and the possibility of extension. We study plant community ecology and forest responses to global change (see our website for full project descriptions). Our research sites are located in the Duke Forest in the piedmont of North Carolina, and at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in the southern Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. The research technicians’ primary responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to, the following: 1) Assist with inventories of vegetation within forested study plots; identify and sort seeds. 2) Collect data from a wireless network of environmental sensors, and performing simple maintenance tasks. 3) Collect and measure tree increment cores. 4) Build and install probes that measure sapflow in tree stems. 5) Use camera equipment to collect hemispherical photographs of forestcanopies. Knowledge of the taxonomy of eastern forests is beneficial. Applicants should be willing to work outdoors under a variety of field conditions. Taking the right steps to make yourself a stand-out candidate can make all the difference. “The best advice is to determine what area of the Federal Government is of most interest to the student’s long-term aspirations,” says Scrutton. Once you have determined to which positions you want to apply, the job sites explain the application process in its entirety as well as offer detailed information to help boost your resume in the eye of the Federal Government. If possible “make yourself known to the hiring official” says Lyle. “Ask professional questions about the position and express your level of interest,” she continues. Lyle adds that in particular “the NPS looks for energetic, friendly people who enjoy the outdoors and feel a passion for preservation. We love to see applicants with course work in natural and social sciences, teaching experience, or the ability to speak foreign languages.” So heed the advice and do your homework! Aside from the agency list provided here, researching the respective agencies through FedScope (www.fedscope.opm.gov) can point you towards agencies in your area and whether they hire people with your education and training. This site lists year round volunteer opportunities, including summer positions, often with stipends or other compensation (housing, food) attached. APPLYING FOR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT POSTINGS Due to regulations designed to keep the hiring process fair, applying for a summer position or internship with a Federal Agency can be a bit more complicated. Federal job titles are standardized, more details are required on resumes, and the qualifications for the jobs are more specific. After you have selected the job or jobs to which you would like to apply, improve your chances among the large pool of applicants by allowing yourself plenty of time to thoroughly complete the application. Each job announcement includes a general description, major duties, qualifications, how you will be evaluated, and directions on how to apply – read these thoroughly and supply all of the information exactly as it is requested. Deviating from the set guidelines or leaving anything out could automatically disqualify your application.

The Federal Government is the Nation’s largest employer with the widest range of career options. “There are very few careers that are not represented in the Federal workforce,” adds Scrutton. The OPM projects that over the next five years more than a half a million federal employees will leave their positions. That leaves the door wide open for individuals who have the appropriate education, training and experience. If you are not sure that working for the Federal Government is for you a summer job or internship can provide you insight with the bonus of benefits. “The benefits derived by employment with the Federal Government are numerous and cover several areas of interest. Public service, solid opportunities for experience, a sense of accomplishment, solid pay, an outstanding benefits package, the potential for growth, training and advancement are but a few of the tangible benefits” says Scrutton. “Don’t be a afraid to get dirty” was Chris Stemen’s battle cry for those who want be successful in their careers. Chris discussed the importance of getting practical experience in your quest for a sustainability career. Aramark provides technical and professional staffing for college campuses to include sustainability careers. There was a lot of interest in Ecology & Environment’s career opportunities. Michael Wironen suggested that the best candidates have the technical skills and meet the current needs of employers like E&E. Candidates for many consulting firms are often hired for their expertise and skill set for a current company project, and the employees succeed by being flexible and by adapting their abilities to complete new projects. E&E attracted the largest audience of job seekers after the career seminar concluded. There was one-piece of advice that every panelist offered to the audience of over 80 attendees and that was getting involved in as much as possible. Doug Brinkley of Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee suggested that prospective students should seek out colleges that not only have great academic and training programs but also those institutions that have campus-wide sustainability programs. Post graduate and continuing education and serving as a volunteer for nonprofit organizations build strong resumes and open doors to launch a green career. He also provided comprehensive advice and inside tips not only for aspiring green design careers but also for engineering, green real estate development, journalism, and even lobbyist. Within his career field of architecture, Doug recommended that anyone seeking a career in green buildings should seek the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional credential. For college students and recent graduates, creating or joining a local US Green Building Council Emerging Green Builders group offers great experience and adds to a valuable career network. Maria Kingery is the co-founder of an innovative solar and energy company, Southern Energy Management (SEM)that was a head of its time. SEM is now positioned well to flourish as our nation is focused on renewable energy and green jobs. Maria Kingery enthusiastically talked about following your passion.
