By Judith A. Stock As a kid Bill Street felt a connection to the water. If it had to do with a lake or a river, he wanted to be there, and spent summers and after school in the pursuit of his passion, sailing, boating, and fishing.

environmental advocacy program in Antioch University in New England in Keene, N.H. “That action can change local, state and national policies and change the corporations that are ecologically irresponsible.”

As an undergraduate in college he found himself torn between science and business, opting for the business route. After graduation from the University of Virginia, he landed a career with a financial consultant firm. Over time, he became less interested in the financial field but when his company began working on environmental issues his interest spiked.

The amount of paid work doing public advocacy has seen its ups and downs. However, overall the trend has escalated with many more organizations that advocate for the environment, according to Chase. “These organizations that work for social peace and justice act as the earth’s immune response system.”

“That showed me that was where I wanted to direct my career,” says Street, executive director of the James River Association in Richmond, Va.

Antioch University in New England offers two programs, those for people interested in the master’s program in environmental advocacy and organizing and a non-MBA degree course of study.

“One of the things that deeply impacted me, my dad told me about Chesapeake Bay during the time he grew up,” says Street. “My mission became to make sure my sons had the same opportunities to enjoy the water as my dad had given me during my growing up years.”

“We look for students who have emotional competency, self-control, empathy and a person who can influence people and develop collaborative groups,” Chase says. “We can teach technical skill but the above talents are core qualities, called emotional competencies.”

In order to successfully make the transition from working in the financial field to hands on advocacy, he entered graduate school, spent five months in Tanzania working with the Jane Goodall group, and received a Master of Environmental Management with a concentration in wetland ecology from Duke University and a Master of Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia.

Volunteering in a program that addresses environmental issues can be a huge first step into the paid job market. Chase says this is the reason why the school has built fieldwork into the training curriculum. Practical work experience is valuable. It lets the employer know your fund of knowledge goes beyond book learning and encompasses fieldwork experience.

Street didn’t just step into his advocacy career. He worked at gathering the skills necessary in order to make the transition feel seamless. “It helped having the breadth of experience, knowing how to use the tools I did have to advance issues and policies along with the knowledge and experience in organizational management, which is where my business management came into play.”

“If you’ve interned for a company, they can write a recommendation letter for you,” Chase says. “ It’s one of the best ways to obtain a paid position with a corporation or a non-profit organization.”

Getting the Credentials Concern continues to grow for a greener and healthier environment but that takes people who are skilled and knowledgeable about how to generate interest in the things that count most these days such as cleaner rivers and streams, healthier air quality and many other important focuses of the green movement. And, that’s where education and timing comes into play. “A lot of our students in our two-year masters program have an intuition that now is the time to put your shoulder to the wheel to really develop the skills to reenergize collectives,” says Steve Chase, director of the

Digging Up Opportunities If you wanted to convince Sam Weis, about the advantages of taking on an internship while in college, you’d be wasting your time. As a student he interned with Clean Wisconsin, a non-profit group that advocates for clean air, clean water and clean energy for a semester, After graduation the non-profit organization offered him the position of media specialist. “I love the job and cannot imagine an industry I would rather work for. It was the perfect opportunity for me to learn about the organization while interning and they learned about me,” says Weis. “Today, I’m in a very unique position. Where most people are worried about the economy, I got this job without sending out a single resume.”

Cool Careers

Go Back to School as a Campus Sustainability Coordinator Think back to your childhood; remember when people used to ask you what you wanted to be when you grew up? Bet you never thought of being the Sustainability Coordinator for a University or College, but in today’s ‘greening’ society it is one of the hottest jobs on the market. A Sustainability Coordinator may have a number of different roles and duties depending on the campus needs for the particular school. However, in general the job duties include the following: -energy efficiency and management -recycling and waste reduction -data collection and reporting -building construction and management -transportation -green dining -environmentally preferable purchasing/procurement -community outreach -working with the students There are many issues going on in today’s world that demand the need for Sustainability Coordinators. The biggest issue currently affecting everything around us is climate change. Due to climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, many schools are hiring Sustainability Coordinators to help do greenhouse gas inventories as well as help implement the necessary changes to reduce the campus’ carbon footprint. However, probably the more motivating issue is our struggling economy. As Kerry Brackett, Virginia Wesleyan College’s Director of Sustainability and Energy said, as the “price of energy rises, people are trying to reduce their energy usage.” So as campus’ look for ways to reduce their energy consumption without reducing their productivity they are hiring Sustainability Coordinators to be the problem solvers in a fast approaching green world. Since the issues that are demanding the need for Sustainability Coordinators will not easily go away and professionals are needed to carry out the proper “greening” methodology, this is one career path that stands to have staying power and provides room to shimmy up that corporate ladder. Director of Sustainability at Evergreen State College, John Pumilio also makes an interesting point regarding the future of this career field. He points out that focusing on campus sustainability will hopefully disappear because by that point we will not be practicing sustainability but living it. As much as we all want stable careers, Pumilio’s point would mean as he stated that “we’ve reached success!” However, there are challenges to this job like any other, Pumilio explains they could be; financial, a battle between appealing versus practical, or an issue with workloads already being too heavy. But there are also many rewards and for Brackett that reward is that it “gives (him) a chance to speak with students and get their views on sustainability.” For Pumilio the reward is achieving successes of any size, such as the campus holding an event that generates zero landfill waste. This career has a very broad spectrum of skills needed, from an understanding of energy systems, to dining, to being able to work with a whole community. A 4-year degree is recommended however not necessary depending on the school. Bowen Patterson, the Sustainability Coordinator at Pomona College, suggests to “learn as much as you can about opportunities for sustainability-related projects, programs, and technologies” in addition to your course work. Brackett also suggests taking business courses regardless of your specialty especially since many schools are most concerned with their bottom line. Many professionals currently in the field also encourage getting work experience while still in school, whether it is a job, an internship or just volunteering. Possibly the most important piece of advice is to “Network, network, network!” as Patterson emphasized. What makes sustainability coordinating such a cool career is that it gives professionals from a number of backgrounds the opportunity to work in a sustainable career and influence the budding young minds who attend the universities and colleges where they work. The students will then become comfortable with sustainable practices, their benefits and inevitably retain these practices in everyday life long after graduation.

Green Careers Champion Bowen Patterson is a woman wrist deep in environmentally sound practices. Her passion for maintaining a system of sustainability for a healthier planet has put her in the position to share her expertise with the students and faculty of Pomona College in Claremont, California. Patterson is the sustainability coordinator at Pomona College, as well as supervisor of two student run businesses: the Green Bikes program and the student thrift store. With her 8 to10 hour a day shifts Patterson is at work before most are awake and still there while most enjoy supper. But she deems all of her hard work worth it when her practices are acknowledged and respected. My “biggest challenge is getting people to be interested and put forth the effort to make change. The greatest reward is having projects and programs successfully implemented, funded and maintained!”

Favorite green thing: Shopping at When Patterson was asked “what is the farmers markets, buying delicious need for sustainability coordinators on organic veggies from small or medium college campuses?” she replied, “Well, sized farms because they are good for her and the environment. obviously the variety of environmental issues facing the planet make it an obligation for everyone and every organization, including colleges and universities, to reduce their environmental impact. With educational institutions in particular, it is a matter of educating young people about the importance of sustainability and what they can do to reduce the world’s environmental problems. Financial savings, educational opportunities, leadership, moral obligation, and innovation are all factors that make sustainability and general environmental improvements important for campuses.

What does the typical sustainability director on a college campus do? Well, Patterson stated “I spend a lot of time in meetings working on specific projects - outreach items such as development of a new website, planning items such as the creation of our campus Sustainability Action Plan, and development items such as recycling infrastructure and green features on new buildings or renovation projects.” Patterson’s position provides a variety of responsibilities which her position with versatility, “I also spend a lot of time supervising and developing student projects along with student teams, and reviewing various documents about sustainabilityrelated matters on campus (e.g. a recent report about capacity for solar on a new residence hall). I interface with a variety of groups, including students, staff, faculty, trustees, alumni, and the City of Claremont about sustainability matters. I also help students with sustainability-related research topics, explore further opportunities for new technologies and programs on campus, and assist the general campus community with inquiries about purchasing decisions, personal behaviors, etc.” Patterson did not get to this point in her career overnight. It took a lot of hard work and motivation. What advice would she give to someone trying to break into a (continued on page 9)

Geothermal Heating Up Job Possibilities

A geyser at Yellowstone National Park. Photo courtesy National Park Service

By Karen-Janine Cohen Bill Spade, of Cleves, Ohio, has long made a living installing heating and air-conditioning. And for years he has also offered customers geothermal systems that tap the earth to help warm and cool homes – options many of his competitors are just now discovering. Spade said that the number of clients choosing geothermal, or ground source heat pumps, is growing from a trickle to a flood.

below ground the earth remains a constant temperature year-round. It varies from about 45 degrees Fahrenheit to 60 degrees or more, depending on a variety of factors. The idea of taping earth’s heat is not new. The Romans did it. More recently, off-grid enthusiasts and back-tothe-landers favored a modern version. Iceland has used geothermal heat exchange to power vast generators for decades.

Expense has hampered ground source heat pump popularity. Retrofitting a home can run $20,000. New construction is about $12,000 above the price of traditional heating and air-conditioning.

Customers choosing geothermal due to high energy costs and concern about fossil fuel emissions could face even longer waits as contractors scramble to find qualified system technicians and installers.

Still, savings can be substantial. Spade, the Ohio contractor said the system can cut a home’s typical $3,000 annual heating, cooling and hot water bill to about $1,200.

In fact, the increased demand for workers schooled in this alternative energy has community colleges and unions retooling their programs to train and deploy a geothermal workforce. Workers installing pipes for geothermal system. Photo credit: Tisdale, Belton - National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)

Still, the private sector isn’t waiting for the government to play catch-up. Programs are already turning out technicians trained in geothermal technologies; companies want these workers; and the demand for geothermal systems is up -- despite the economy’s financial swoon.

Mother Earth is Warm What is geothermal energy? Many people might be surprised to learn that, while they pile on sweaters in January, or blast air-conditioning in August, five-or-six feet

Bose and colleagues designed the plastic piping placed in the earth and developed pipe configurations used in projects. Bose calculated the area needed for efficient systems and figured out ideal pipe proximities while developing protocols for testing soil conductivity – which can vary widely depending on soil makeup. Residential projects usually use a grid of horizontal pipes that rest five-or-six feet underground. Office buildings, stores or other large structures typically use pipes installed in horizontal holes drilled 100 feet, or much more.

“Two years ago I’d put in maybe two a month. Now it’s four-to-five,” Spade said. “We get backed up in the summertime two-or-three months on these things.”

And Congress gave geothermal, solar and other green energies a boost when it attached a tax credit to the recent financial bailout bill. More support could be forthcoming. Federal lawmakers approved $125 million to help community colleges train workers in renewable energy technologies though funding has yet to materialize.

professor at Oklahoma State University, ushered in the current era of ground source heat pump technology.

Here’s how the ground source heat pump version of geothermal works. Fairly narrow pipes are placed into the earth. A water-antifreeze mix runs through the pipes, picking up the warmth. Once pumped back in the building, that liquid warms another specialized fluid, which undergoes vaporization and compression. This creates greater heat, fanned through the home. The process, akin to refrigeration, can also cool a building in summer. Unlike solar, it is not entirely “green,” as electricity is needed to run the pump, and it may not supply a building’s entire climate control needs. Geothermal also refers to a wide variety of ways to provide heating and cooling, not just ground source heat pumps. Most experts agree that the work of Dr. James Bose, a

Bose, also executive director of the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA), said that geothermal use is growing 18 percent-to-20 percent a year with more than one million U.S. systems installed. Almost 9,000 people have passed through the association’s accreditation-track training classes for contractors, installers and designers, Bose said, and the demand is growing. “The last two years have been crazy,” he said. “Every time we offer a class it is full to capacity.”

School in Session Meanwhile, community colleges, unions and trade schools are adding geothermal to their curriculums. Some educators see geothermal as integral to skills students will need to handle the clean energies expected to replace oil, gas and coal. (continued on page 10) 7

career in sustainability coordinating? She had a few choice tips, “Lots of experience with sustainability projects. You need to be able to talk about a variety of topics immediately when asked, and try to explain why the institution should be doing it.” Patterson’s advice to someone breaking into this career is, “Learn as much as you can about opportunities for sustainability-related projects, programs, and technologies. You will be counted on for expertise in a variety of topic areas (e.g. recycling, green building, landscaping, etc.). Good communication skills are tantamount. It’s also good to have a prior relationship with the institution so you know who to talk to from the beginning, but of course that’s not always possible…”

Dollars for Credits Makes Sense

Just like most business ventures it is important to keep lines of communication open and you can never network enough as Patterson proclaims, “Network, network, network! Almost everyone I’ve ever met that has been involved in this field has been a resource to me in the first few months of this position. It’s important to talk to fellow campus sustainability professionals about what they’re doing, what’s worked, their troubles, etc.” Active participation in events sponsors by organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education is a great place to start networking. The future looks bright for campus sustainability coordinators because more and more leading institutions like Pomona College walk the talk by investing in new positions and green leaders like Bowen Patterson to advocate and manage for a sustainable campus. By Ambre Kohl Tomlinson

When doing our simple part for the environment we often think on a small level. Recycling our plastics and metals may help. Carpooling to work cuts back on the release of carcinogens and unsafe fume emissions in the air. But, what if you were really passionate? What if you made the ultimate step toward saving planet Earth and joined the workforce not in a “White” or “Blue” collar but in a “Green” one. Green careers or careers that contain an underlying goal of bettering the sustainability of the environment by implementing environmentally conscious design, technology and policy, are growing at a rapid rate. There is no better time than 2008 to get on board. In this time of a difficult economy and environmental crisis, one now has the opportunity to feed two birds with one seed. If possible why not work for a new hot job and help the environment while you do it? A new hot job according to www.money.cnn.com that is currently in high demand, provides lucrative benefits and does its part for sustainability is the professional Carbon (or emission) Trader. With a degree from a business school (and a master’s in business management can only help) you too can hop on the fast track in this uprising career. The carbon-offset market was born in 1997 with the Kyoto Protocol which is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. For more information on the Kyoto Protocol, check out (http://unfccc.int/ kyoto_protocol/items/2830.php). Countries that decided this was best for them, placed caps on how much carbon dioxide they could emit. But not all industries could drop their carbon emissions low enough to meet the goal, and so the trading system was developed. Emission trading is an approach used to control pollution by providing economic incentives for achieving reductions in the emissions of pollutants. It is sometimes called cap and trade. The Government sets a limit or cap on the amount of a pollutant that can be emitted into the atmosphere. Companies or other groups are issued emission permits and are required to hold an equivalent number of allowances (or credits) which represent the right to emit a specific amount of pollutants into the air. The total amount of allowances and credits cannot exceed the cap, limiting total emissions to that level. Carbon traders serve as the middlemen between these companies that buy and sell credits between them. Here comes the opportunity of a company who releases more pollutants into the atmosphere to buy pollution credits from some other company that produces less. This way the companies can co-exist and conduct business as well as keep the pollutants in the air below the cap. Carbon trading is the chic new corporate career for the individual that plans to give back as much as they’ve borrowed from the earth and make the blows of pollution a little softer. After all, green is the new black. By Ambre Kohl Tomlinson

Advocacy Careers

(from page 5)

Returning to college, she did her master’s thesis on carbon credits in relationship to climate change. “At the time, I thought environmental advocacy was getting on a Green Peace boat and stopping a whaling ship,” she explained. To obtain an internship, she talked with her college advisor, read everything she could find and began the search to locate an internship that suited her interests and talents. Savedge applied to the National Park Service and due to her major in science, she won an internship at the Shenandoah National Park during the summers. Her best advice for those who want a green advocacy career—volunteer for a cause that you’re passionate about. “In the green movement, it counts as much as paid work.” Savedge, who lives in Luray, Va., applied for and won a position with the Environmental Investigation Agency, an environmental non-profit agency in Washington, D.C., that pursued campaigns to protect endangered and threatened species such as elephants, tigers and whales. In her work, she lobbied for the animals by attending conferences where she presented the agency’s findings.

Digging Even Deeper When Marie Kerpan sees a client who needs answers on how to obtain a green advocacy career, first she uncovers their interests and lets that information point where to go next. If they’re interested in a career within the renewable energy field, she tells them to do research online and find out who the non-profit organizations are that are doing renewable energy projects. Kerpan, founder of Green Careers and a faculty member of the Green MBA at Dominican University in San Rafael, Calif., tells her clients to approach those organizations to see if they have job openings. If they don’t respond, send out an email to friends and family stating your interest in renewable energy, identify the organizations you singled out and ask them if they know anyone in the respective companies and if they know any other companies that also deal in renewable energy. The point is, it’s not necessary for the organization to have an opening for you to approach them. If they are doing work in your field of interest then contact them and the easiest way to do that is to gain an introduction from a family member or friend. According to Kerpan, networking is the number one-way that people find a career in any field. Social networking is an excellent way to obtain information on advocacy careers and helps you connect with people who work in the position that you’re (concluded on page 10)

Advocacy Careers

(from page 9)

interested in pursuing. “Depending on the type of advocacy work you want, there is a strong education component,” says Kerpan , as some part of the job will be to win over people to your point of view. “Having a degree or experience in public policy can be a critical function of advocacy in your ability to organize, train and manage volunteers,” Kerpan says. “As most of these organizations are non-profit, fundraising is also a key skill.” Being well spoken, having the ability to communicate well and being a capable speaker will also be an advantage in the field of green advocacy.

Geothermal Jobs

Hired because of her wide range of experience in environmental organizations, and the public sector, Ilana Gauss, green programs specialist with the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Public Health says, “Go to networking events, find out what people do and ask them how they got their job. I found my current job through the Women’s Environmental Network.” Part of Gauss’ position with the City of San Francisco includes helping businesses to obtain green recognition awards for regulatory compliance, technical assistance for pollution prevention and marketing to promote the award program to the public.

“Especially today it’s possible to have an environmental career and live a lifestyle from hippy to city socialite,” says Gauss. “I’m friends with different people who are engaged in different ways with the environment who also live in different community models. Everyone is interested in green.” Over the last few decades, interest in environmental advocacy careers has steadily increased as we step from where we are to where we want to be in the future for ourselves and the environment as a whole.

Gauss found that being involved in faith-based

technician can be on his or her own,” he wrote in an email. Larry Feist, a department chair at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, two years ago established a program that trains students to install, maintain and evaluate several clean energy technologies. “My goals and my focus are in producing technicians,” he said. He envisions graduates managing factories that build solar panels, wind turbines or geothermal components, or guiding commercial buildings to greater energy efficiency by combining traditional methods, like insulation, with renewable options. While ground source heat pumps are part of the program, he’s now also creating a separate offering based on geothermal technologies. Several hundred miles to the east, Ed Burns, who chairs the technologies and trades department at the Harrisburg Area Community College, in Harrisburg, Pa., is putting the finishing touches on a geothermal component for the school’s HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and cooling) program.

Wages for a schooled HVAC technician without other specialized skills can start from about $12 an hour to $20, depending on the region. Meanwhile, unions are training apprentices and members in geothermal technology. Frank Quattrocchi, an assistant training coordinator for the Plumber & Pipefitters Local 501, in Aurora Ill., said 100 contractors, HVAC tradesmen and others have participated in their year-old geothermal program, run in coordination with the IGSHPA. Quattrocchi, who noted that a journeyman union member makes $60 an hour in wages and benefits, said geothermal is fast becoming part of the field’s basic continuing education.

Physical Plant takes Star Turn Commercial projects are also eyeing geothermal.

Burns said area companies indicated they want workers skilled in geothermal technology. Still, he noted, it’s one more layer of complexity on an ever-more specialized field.

The Gettysburg, Pa., branch of the Harrisburg Community college network will soon add a retrofitted strip mall to its campus. Forty-nine 400-foot wells will send warmed liquid to a geothermal heat pump.

“Technology has exceeded the technician,” he said. “We can no longer get a kid off the street and throw him into a truck and teach him how to fix an air-conditioning unit.”

The projects designers, JMZ Architects and Planners, specialize in higher education, with a focus on community colleges. Tenee Casaccio, architect and principle of the Glens Falls, N.Y.-based firm said they have been offering geothermal for about eight years.

Help Wanted Secco Inc., a firm near Harrisburg that specializes in electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and solar construction, could provide jobs for some of those graduates. It expects its geothermal heat pump business to grow. Customer interest in the systems has bloomed since fuel prices began rising, said Craig Drabenstadt, Secoo’s vice president of building mechanical services. Still, he said, geothermal technicians must master a good deal of plumbing and electrical information as well as basic HVAC technologies, a training level that may give pause to some potential students. “This field isn’t as attractive as some of the other trades due to the vast knowledge required and the amount of time and training invested until a skilled HVAC installer/ 10

organizations is another way to secure a position, as they often have mandates to be as green as possible.

“It doesn’t fit every project,” she said, but added that they usually include a geothermal option in design plans because it’s a good choice for schools with capital improvement funds but constrained operating budgets. “Even if geothermal costs more to install than a traditional system the payback over time and the energy savings is really a relief to their operating expenses every year,” she said. In fact, the energy situation and green awareness has architects, designers and contractors gaining a new appreciation for building infrastructures, said Frank Quattrocchio, the union training expert. “Historically all the money went to architecture and things www.environmentalcareer.com

like terrazzo tile, while mechanical systems took a back seat,” he said. “They were designed to do the job at the lowest possible price.” But no more. “Suddenly architects and engineers are looking at the mechanical aspects in terms of efficiency,” Quattrocchio said “They are willing to commit more dollars to unseen systems because they recognize their importance.” Types of Geothermal Heat Pump Systems There are four basic types of ground loop systems. Three of these— horizontal, vertical, and pond/lake—are closed-loop systems. The fourth type of system is the open-loop option. Which one of these is best depends on the climate, soil conditions, available land, and local installation costs at the site. All of these approaches can be used for residential and commercial building applications. Closed-Loop Systems Horizontal: This type of installation is generally most cost-effective for residential installations, particularly for new construction where sufficient land is available. It requires trenches at least four feet deep. The most common layouts either use two pipes, one buried at six feet, and the other at four feet, or two pipes placed side-by-side at five feet in the ground in a two-foot wide trench. The Slinky™ method of looping pipe allows more pipe in a shorter trench, which cuts down on installation costs and makes horizontal installation possible in areas it would not be with conventional horizontal applications. Vertical: Large commercial buildings and schools often use vertical systems because the land area required for horizontal loops would be prohibitive. Vertical loops are also used where the soil is too shallow for trenching, and they minimize the disturbance to existing landscaping. For a vertical system, holes (approximately four inches in diameter) are drilled about 20 feet apart and 100–400 feet deep. Into these holes go two pipes that are connected at the bottom with a U-bend to form a loop. The vertical loops are connected with horizontal pipe (i.e., manifold), placed in trenches, and connected to the heat pump in the building. Pond/Lake: If the site has an adequate water body, this may be the lowest cost option. A supply line pipe is run underground from the building to the water and coiled into circles at least eight feet under the surface to prevent freezing. The coils should only be placed in a water source that meets minimum volume, depth, and quality criteria. Open-Loop System This type of system uses well or surface body water as the heat exchange fluid that circulates directly through the GHP system. Once it has circulated through the system, the water returns to the ground through the well, a recharge well, or surface discharge. This option is obviously practical only where there is an adequate supply of relatively clean water, and all local codes and regulations regarding groundwater discharge are met. On Campus and Beyond AASHE- Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education provides cosponsored events to offer professional development opportunities such as webinars, workshops and conferences. This year AASHE is holding its Biennial North American Conference November 9-12th, 2008 entitled “Working Together for Sustainability – On Campus and Beyond” and focuses on green solutions for sustainability purposes and will take place at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, NC. The keynote speakers for this conference include: • Lester R. Brown – Founder, Earth Policy Institute, and author of, “Eco-Economy,” “Plan B,” and “Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization” • Van Jones – Founder and President, Green for All • Peter Senge - Senior lecturer, MIT, and chair, Society for Organizational Learning (SOL) • Vandana Shiva – Physicist, environmental activist, author (“Stolen Harvest,” and “Earth Democracy”), and winner of the 1993 Right Livelihood Award In collaboration with these 2008 festivities, the Green Career Center is doing their part to ensure effective sustainability for the future of a greener world by hosting a career seminar featuring panelists from various types of employers. The panel will include representatives from Architecture, Manufacturing, Corporations, Consulting, the U.S. Army, and Academia. When contemplating a green future many feel the dream, at this point, is unattainable. Those who know how necessary sustainability is for the environment know better. Douglas Brinkley, LEED AP architect for Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee as well as a real estate salesman/ broker is one of the panelists who recognize the importance of a green future. When asked where green careers lie on a scale of importance he replied “As former President Bill Clinton said at the 2007 Green Build Expo in Chicago, sustainability and renewable energy is our nation’s opportunity to re-energize our economy. It is our future. With the current economic crisis and energy issues our country is facing, Green careers are paramount to our country’s future.” Brinkley went on to voice his opinion on a green future “It means a future where we give back to nature more than we borrow. It also means that what we give back is as good or better than what it was that we borrowed. There also has to be a social and economic justice where everyone benefits. It also means healthier cities which contribute to healthier people.” Maria Kingery, owner of Southern Energy Management in Raleigh-Durham NC and past retail operations manager at Burt’s Bees, is another panelist at the conference who avidly works to make her mark in the green industry “I share the opinion of many of our leaders that moving toward a green economy offers the greatest opportunity, for the most people, that the world has ever seen. Given the environmental, social and economic challenges we’re facing, investing in green technologies across all sectors of our global economy lays the groundwork for the healthy and prosperity of future generations.” Kingery gave her views on what she hopes to accomplish from her participation in the seminar “I want to encourage people to consider ways they can translate their passion for sustainability into viable career opportunities. Whatever their specific talents and skills are, everyone can play a role in moving the green economy forward” Her views for a green future were quite passionate, “I’m a mother, and I believe it’s my responsibility to do whatever I can to create the best possible future for my child. In my most optimistic moments, I see a world in which all of the world’s people have enough healthy food to eat and clean water to drink, and enough clean, renewable energy to power whatever.” To learn more about sustainability, check out the Environmental Career Seminar on November 11 at the AASHE conference from 2pm - 3:30pm in the Raleigh Convention Center hosted by the Green Careers Center.

I am seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to work at the interface of theoretical and experimental ecology, on a project examining the impact of environmental variability on the dynamics of ecological communities. Population biologists have developed a growing understanding of how the basic processes of growth, reproduction, and mortality respond to altered environmental conditions. However, little work has focused on how these ‘direct’ responses to environmental variability combine with the ‘indirect’ responses conveyed via interactions in the food web. This project aims to better understand how the organization of food web interactions modulates the impact of environmental variability on the fundamental properties of ecological communities such as their diversity, stability, and productivity. The project will involve a combination of theoretical work (development and analysis of multispecies stochastic models) and complementary microcosm experiments (comprised of communities of freshwater plankton species). The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in theoretical ecology, including non-linear dynamics, stochastic processes, numerical analysis, and in the design and analysis of experiments. Previous experience with freshwater microcosms is an asset, but not a requirement. It is anticipated that

Spatial Processes in Deciduous Forest Understories: Understory plant communities of the eastern deciduous forest of North America are extensively studied but remain poorly understood due to the complexity of limiting processes that affect their member species. Emerging evidence points to the importance of spatial distance and environmental heterogeneity, but how these factors vary by spatial scale, site history, phylogenetic relatedness, latitude, and isolation distance is unclear. We seek a highly motivated PhD student to examine these issues using trait-based, statistical, and experimental approaches in deciduous forest understories of southern Ontario, Canada. These understories are diversity hotspots in Canada, containing large numbers of rare and endangered plants. Their declines are welldescribed but the causal mechanisms are elusive, giving this study theoretical and applied significance. Interested applicants should ideally have an MSc in ecology, biogeography, or statistical biology, with field experience including experimental approaches and plant identification. The successful student will be remunerated with a combination of fellowships, research or teaching assistantships, with funding guaranteed for three years.
