Step by Step
There’s No Better Way to Experience the Catskills
Consisting of almost 300,000 acres of unspoiled woods, the forever-wild Catskill Forest Preserve is a hiker’s paradise. Greene County is not only home to almost half of this pristine forest preserve but also five of the 10 highest peaks in the Catskill Mountains, making it an ideal place to explore old-growth forests, mossy gorges, jagged crags and panoramic vistas on foot. With so much to explore among the wild refuge of the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County, choosing the right hike can be a challenge. Fortunately, there is a trail for all abilities to connect deeply with nature and to take in picturesque landscapes that’ll leave you breathless. Whichever path you follow, begin your journey towards falling in love with the Catskills by planning out your adventure. See our Hiking Guide for more information on hiking options.
NORTH-SOUTH LAKE STATE PARK
Many trails branching out & looping back to one central location
If you are looking for a Catskills destination that offers a wide variety of hiking options, look no further than the North-South Lake State Park. This is the most popular state campground in New York State and is a great
destination for hikers who wish to experience striking scenic beauty, extraordinary views of the surrounding countryside, and notable historic sites.
The 1,100-acre campground is ringed with many miles of hiking trails including the popular Escarpment Trail and the Long Path
Another popular and easy hike at the campground is the 2.5 mile North-South Lake Loop, a pleasant hike around what once were two lakes, until land between the lakes was removed to create one large lake.
Here are a few additional recommendations to get you started:
EASY
Escarpment Trail to Catskill Mountain House Overlook
A short, ¼-mile walk from the lake’s beach area, the trail takes hikers to a spectacular overlook where the historic Catskill Mountain House used to be located. The massive former resort, erected 200 years ago, attracted visitors from far and wide. The Mountain House is an easy walk from the public lot at North Lake beach. This Catskill attraction is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast as well as the history buff.
MODERATE
Sunset Rock
This 4.6-mile, out-and-back hike, which also connects to Artist’s Rock, Newman’s Ledge and Mary’s Glen Trail, leads to a large, open rock face with views toward North Lake and the distant Catskill Mountains to the west. For an exceptional experience, arrive before sunset and watch the sun’s colors morph into shades of orange and pink as it sinks into the distant mountains. Just be sure to leave shortly after sunset, as darkness occurs 90 minutes later.
CHALLENGING
Inspiration Point
Inspiration Point is one of the top scenic destinations in the area with quintessential Catskill views. It’s located in Kaaterskill Clove, a mountain ravine of picture-postcard beauty and home to Kaaterskill Falls. The round-trip hike is 4.3 miles with multiple pause-worthy views before and after Inspiration Point’s main ledge as well as all of the views along the way across Kaaterskill Clove. Choose your footwear carefully, as the trail can be quite muddy and slippery, and there are a few spots of rock scrambling.
HIKING TO KAATERSKILL FALLS
Greene County is home to the highest cascading waterfall in New York State. Kaaterskill Falls drops 260 feet in two tiers. Its beauty, size, and sheer force draws a large number of visitors every year. Its steep location makes it accessible by no more than a few paths, and nearby parking is limited. Parking is prohibited on Route 23A, although you can view Bastion Falls from your vehicle on your way to nearby parking.
Kaaterskill Falls can easily be accessed from the Mountain Top Historical Society campus by taking the Kaaterskill Rail Trail, a flat 1.5 mile historic path that begins at the 1913 Ulster
& Delaware Train Station and leads you to the top of Kaaterskill Falls. A fun way to visit the falls is by riding the Kaaterskill Trolley from Tannersville. It stops at the Laurel House Road trailhead which leads to the Kaaterskill Falls Viewing Platform, as well as takes riders to Bastion Falls, a couple of swimming holes and the town of Palenville. Climb aboard!
Additional Tips for Hiking at Kaaterskill Falls:
• Only follow the marked trail signs. For your safety, do not follow unmarked trails you might see veering off into the forest or away from the main trail. Making shortcuts can lead to erosion on trails, and greatly increases the chances of getting lost or injured.
• Do not climb on the rocks under or around the waterfall. Injuries are common in areas where the rock or ground is slick.
• Wear sturdy shoes for hikes, not sandals or flip flops.
• Swimming is discouraged for safety purposes.
• Carry out what you carry in.
• Glass is not allowed.
• Campfires are prohibited.
• Enjoy the epic beauty of this attraction while keeping yourself and others safe!

LEAVE NO TRACE
Help to keep the forever-wild lands intact for generations to come. Whether you’re taking a short hike in the Catskill Forest Preserve or plan to be out all day, follow these Leave No Trace principles for day hiking.
• Plan ahead and prepare: Know the area’s rules and regulations, prepare for extreme weather, hazards and emergencies, and schedule your trek to avoid times of high use.
• Dispose of waste properly: Carry an empty baggie for your trash.
• Leave what you find: It’s tempting to take souvenirs from your incredible experience in the outdoors, but please leave nature intact.
• Respect Wildlife: Wildlife sightings are an exciting perk of trail hiking. Critters of the woods and waters, however, are not as excited to see you. Give wildlife plenty of space, and remain quiet. Never approach or feed animals. Should an animal approach you, back away or continue down the trail away from them.
• Be considerate of other visitors: Minimize your noise pollution, clean up after yourself, share views and trails, and be polite in all interactions.
CAUTION: Outdoor recreation activities are by their very nature potentially hazardous and contain risks. All participants in such activities must assume the responsibility for their own actions and safety. The outdoors are forever changing. The Greene County Tourism Office cannot be held responsible for inaccuracies, errors, or omissions, or for changes in the details in this publication or for the consequences of any reliance on the information contained herein for the safety of people in the outdoors.
Newlyweds and travel influencers @Luda_ and @MrsJessieLove chronicle their adventures and moments of relaxation during a breathtakingly beautiful fall getaway. The couple opted for a mid-week trip in October to avoid the larger foliage crowds.
48 HOURS in the Great Northern Catskills
DAY 1: MONDAY »
We checked in at the newly unveiled James Newbury Hotel in Coxsackie, after an easy 30-minute drive from Albany. The hotel was originally built in 1906 as a manufacturing facility and the property was the site of a former 19th-century shipping port and iron foundry. As an ode to its history, the design and aesthetics pay homage to the site’s industrial and maritime past while seamlessly blending in modern motifs and contemporary luxury.
After settling into our room and exploring the property, we walked around the Reed Street Historic District and Coxsackie Riverside Park in downtown Coxsackie. It’s a place so special that you almost don’t want to tell people about it – but you do because it’s simply too good to keep to yourself. The district has everything from retro eateries to modern and antique shops all set within a town so cute it looks as if it could be a movie set.
Fun-to-visit spots include:
• Coxsackie General Store for one-of-a-kind goodies and provisions.
• Reed Street Bottle Shop for an impressive selection of wine and spirits. We picked up a bottle of Prosecco!
• Shipwrecked Bookstore a one-stop shop for books and coffee that feels extra cozy.
• Unquiet Antiques is a former firehouse turned eccentric den of antiquity.
For dinner we snagged a reservation from the cozy and stylish Che Figata Bistro, where the warm glow of the patio’s string lights welcomed us in. The menu features classic Italian cuisine with plenty of vegan-friendly options. Notable call outs from the meal were the short rib ragu over fresh rigatoni, the gnocchi and braciole, and the pear, walnut and blue cheese salad. Delizioso! Before heading back to the hotel, we snuck off to enjoy a quick nightcap at the Ravish Liquors Speakeasy just down the street. It’s a bit of a dive bar but what it lacks in square footage it makes up for in ambiance and vibe.
DAY 2: TUESDAY »
Our morning started with some breathtaking views of the Hudson Valley through our room’s floor-to-ceiling windows. We took our time getting ready and basked in the morning light before leaving for breakfast at Babblers Restaurant and Bakery in Windham.
It was about a 40-minute drive but, with the rolling mountains around us, the time moved really quickly. (Knowing that we had an exciting day ahead of us also helped!) After munching on some yummy breakfast sammies we ventured over to Mountain Brook Farm for the ride of a lifetime. If you're in the area and able, riding horseback through the Great Northern Catskills is a MUST. The guide was so patient and personable. She took us on a wooded and secluded trail that led out into this big golden field with picture-perfect views of Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain. We were speechless. It’s no wonder that this place is so famous for their foliage.
After a few hours at the farm, we went to Tannersville to refuel. We got lunch at this adorable retro mom and pop shop called Mama’s Boy Burgers and explored the (so accurately nicknamed) “Painted Village in the Sky,” otherwise known as downtown Tannersville. Notable callouts from bopping around Tannersville were Tannersville Antiques, Nat’s Mountain House, Last Chance Antiques & Cheese Café, Bear and Fox Provisions, and The Pantry on Main
Once the sun started to set on a perfect Catskills day, we settled on dinner at Jessie's Harvest House. The interior was rusticly chic with a friendly tavern-like atmosphere and the food was *chef’s kiss.* The menu rotates based on the season but always features a diverse mix of Americanstyle cuisine with locally-sourced ingredients. We could really taste how fresh the produce was, and the chef’s combination of flavors were to die for.
DAY 3: WEDNESDAY »
After bidding farewell to the James Newbury, we went to Gracie’s Luncheonette for a final bite on our way out of town. We were told that this old school diner is known for its “upbeat vibe” and homemade sodas, and now we completely understand why. Such a great spot.
With a short drive down the road to the village of Catskill we arrived at the historic home of the famous American landscape artist, Thomas Cole. Touring where the founder
of the Hudson River School of Art spent so much of his time was pretty remarkable and after soaking in the views of the Catskill Mountain range from the property’s wraparound porch, we could easily see how and why he drew so much of his inspiration.
Our two-night getaway was everything we could have hoped for. Until next time, Great Northern Catskills. It’s not goodbye, just see you later.
FAMILY FUN! Seasons of 4
There’s a reason the Catskills have been a family vacation destination for generations. Take Catskill exit 21 off the New York State Thruway to discover all flavors of family fun 12 months out of the year. The variety of destinations for play, entertainment and adventure that await in the Northern Catskills will widen little eyes and broaden smiles.
MAKE SUMMER A SPLASH: SLIDE, PLUNGE, FLOAT AND HAVE A BLAST AT ZOOM FLUME
There’s something for everyone—all sizes, all ages, all degrees of daring—at Zoom Flume Water Park. For the competitive spirits, a
tandem slide lets two race side by side on mats to the finish. The fearless can ride alone or scream their way along with a buddy through the dark Black Vortex’s twists and turns. Coming in 2024, a new high-octane twister that starts from the same tower as last year’s new addition, the Rip Van Racer, will take you on an adventure sliding over 307 feet.
And get your “group on” with friends and family by piling onto a giant raft to navigate the racing waters of the “Wild River.”
Smaller splash enthusiasts (up to 100 pounds) can grab a tube and swoosh down the “Thrill Hill.” The “littles” get to
feel big splashing in the shallow pool with interactive water fountains and small slides.
If speed is not your thing or you’re tired out from a few too many slide runs, the giant Lagoon Activity Pool and the gentle flowing Lazy River let you play it cool. With dozens of slides and water attractions plus snack bars for when you get hungry, you’ll want to reserve a good amount of time–and sunscreen–for a day of fun at Zoom Flume Water Park.
UNDER THE STARRY SKY, CATCH A FLICK AT THE DRIVE-INS
Pull up to a big screen at one of the region’s two iconic drive-in movie theaters.
The Greenville Drive-In has been a social hub in the Northern Catskills for over six decades. In addition to an eclectic offering of films, the drivein’s biergarten serves local beer, wine & specialty cocktails plus locally-made snacks and sodas. On weekends, local musicians perform on stage ahead of the setting sun and the featured flick.
The Hi-Way Drive-In, located in the river town of Coxsackie, is the second-largest drive-in theater in New York State. Its four screens mean there’s a feature film for most anyone. The snack menu harkens back to its 1950s roots with “snow-kones” and traditional snack shack fare, like hotdogs, hamburgers, and cheeseburgers, as well as more modern-day snacks, like deep-fried pickles and jalapeno poppers. Both drive-in locations are open late spring into fall.
RIDE OUT AND CAMP UNDER THE STARS, COWBOY-STYLE
Bailiwick Animal Park and Riding Stables offers the ultimate Catskills-style cowboy experience for the family. Ride out into the wilderness on horseback and camp under the stars for a night. The experience includes an introductory lesson and up to four hours of riding. Led by experienced trail guides, these overnight ride-out and ride-in camping trips require reservations and a minimum of two people.
Bailiwick also offers pony rides, riding lessons and scenic mountain trail rides every day, all year. The ranch is located on 300 private acres at the foot of the Catskill mountains and is adjacent to state land for even more trail riding. There are horses for every level of rider, and experienced instructors are especially attuned to providing instruction to beginners. Young children will enjoy Bailiwick’s animal park with over 30 exhibits of domestic & exotic animals, from kangaroos, lemurs, and Bengal tigers to potbellied pigs and bunnies. Most of the animals at this family-owned animal park have been donated or rescued.
SNOW TUBING AND OTHER WINTER PLAY
The Northern Catskills provide a perfect, powdery playground for families feeling seasonal cabin fever during the winter months. Adults and kids alike don’t have to be ski savvy to make the most of the mountains’ snow. Located on one of the high peaks in the region, Bearpen Mountain in Prattsville offers a variety of outdoor adventures and fun for all ages. Zip down the longest snow tubing run in New York. Glide along ice skating paths. Cross country ski, snowshoe, and fat bike through scenic Catskill Mountain trails. Or try your hand at a game of curling.
Smaller snow tubes for little kids are available to attach to adult tubes. Children ages five and under are free of charge for snow tubing. Rentals are available in children and adult sizes for snowshoeing, cross country skiing, fat tire biking, and ice skating.
You can also take your family snow tubing at Hunter Mountain Resort and Windham Mountain Club. Purchase tickets online in advance to reserve your spot.

Victorian storefronts along Main Street boast an eclectic variety of restaurants, bakeries, gift shops, boutiques and galleries. COXSACKIE »
Pronounced “cook-SAH-kie,” a name derived from an Algonquin Indian word meaning “Place of Owls” or “Cut Rocks,” Coxsackie’s quintessential small village is built along a tranquil, scenic stretch of the Hudson River.
2023 was a big year for the village. It was a $4.5 million winner of grant funds for ongoing restoration, renovation and re-invention of Reed Street, a national historic district. The stroll-friendly neighborhood is worth exploring for both its architecture and string of independent shops, including Steve’s Clothes vintage clothing store, the Reed Street Bottle Shop for wine and spirits, Pilothouse Paper specialty stationery shop, Shipwrecked Books, Bar and Cafe, and UnQuiet for an eclectic mix of antiques, gifts and sheer oddities along with the small, convivial bar Ravish Liquors adjoining in what used to be an 1800s firehouse.
The small neighborhood offers a handful of dining options. The Yellow Deli is a popular spot for breakfast and lunch. The Coxsackie General Store is a great place for coffee and a quick-grab breakfast or lunch. The tavern Patrick Henry’s, new in 2023, specializes in
brick-oven pizza and offers outdoor seating. Che Figata Bistro, an Italian bistro, offers lunch and dinner with a chic indoor dining room and sidewalk dining options on historic Reed Street during summer months. Satisfy your sweet tooth at the new Coxsackie Creamery
In September 2023, the James Newbury Hotel opened its doors. The hotel’s 13,500 square foot event center, The Wire, sits on the banks of the Hudson River providing a serene backdrop for weddings, conferences, parties and celebrations.
The five-acre Coxsackie Riverside Park provides space to stroll, relax, shop the farmer’s market for local produce and goods, and enjoy free concerts during summer months along a pristine stretch of the Hudson.
Outside of the village look for Red’s, a classic seafood restaurant that is known for its brunches and has been operating since 1944. Celebrating its 80th year in business, Red's is the oldest restaurant in Greene County!

History Along the Hudson
The town of Catskill is home to one of the most important cultural landmarks in New York State, the Thomas Cole National Historic Site. The picturesque home and grounds, which overlook both the river and the mountains, bear a distinctive place in America’s art history. Cole, a British expat and artist who sailed up the Hudson in 1825 on an exploratory journey, is credited with founding America’s first major art movement, known as the Hudson River School of Art. He was so taken with the beauty of the landscape that his paintings took on an ethereal quality that enchanted gallery goers in New York and beyond.
A new exhibition, Native Prospects: Indigeneity and Landscape Painting, will debut in May presenting 19thcentury paintings by Thomas Cole featuring Native figures, in context with Indigenous artifacts of historic and cultural value, and contemporary artworks by Indigenous artists.
Also in 2024 at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, a new, four-season visitor center will open offering panoramic views of the historic campus against the backdrop of the majestic Catskill Mountains.
Six miles out and back, the Hudson River Skywalk connects Cole’s homestead with Olana State Historic Site
across the river via the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. Olana was the home of Frederic Church, Cole’s first pupil. Discover the history of American art right here in the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County.
Built in 1874, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse is an architectural gem —one of the remaining two lighthouses on the Hudson River. It is located in the middle of the river between the towns of Athens and Hudson. Constructed to guide vessels along the river and around a large mudflat that was grounding ships, the brick, two-story lighthouse was home to lightkeepers and their families up until the 1960s. Today, the lighthouse is open to visitors in the summer with tours that include boat transportation. Events will be held year round in 2024 to celebrate the lighthouse’s 150th anniversary.
In Coxsackie, tour the oldest surviving home in Upstate New York – the 1663 Stone House, located at the Bronck Museum, a national historic landmark. The museum also features a thirteen-sided hay barn, several other historic dwellings and barns plus a fascinating glimpse into a wealthy family’s life during the Colonial era. The on-site Vedder Research Library is a wealth of information for genealogy and history buffs.
Music, Events & Festivals
In May, the annual Rip Van Winkle Wine, Brew & Beverage Festival kicks off in Catskill, offering a mouthwatering selection of locally crafted beers, wine, spirits and ciders, handmade items, food trucks, and live musical entertainment hosted at the Historic Catskill Point
On June 15, rising country music star Jackson Dean will headline with special guest Alana Springsteen for the 2nd annual Concert in the Catskills: The River Sessions at the Historic Catskill Point.

FEEL IT
The Catskills have been a haven for the adventurous spirit for centuries, with one particular county standing tall above the rest. Greene County is crowned with four of the five tallest mountain peaks in the Catskills. It's a place famously known as an oasis for thrill seekers looking to elevate their game and conquer new heights.
Two of our most prominent mountain peaks act as unofficial epicenters of thrill. When autumn arrives, the Hunter Mountain Resort and Windham Mountain Club skyrides take riders a whopping 3,200 feet up the rugged terrain. Riders can see the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts and the Green Mountains of Vermont in the distance.
When the flurries start to fly, the iconic Hunter and Windham mountains lure winter sports enthusiasts with their 605+ acres of powdery perfect slopes and 120+ exhilarating trails. With nicknames like the "Northeast's Premier Alpine Lifestyle" and the "Snowmaking Capital of the World," the colder weather is more than just welcomed here in the Great Northern Catskills. It’s celebrated!
IT HAPPENS HERE
One of only seven remaining lighthouses on the Hudson River, The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse is truly an architectural gem. The historic landmark was constructed in the 1870s to warn ships of nearby sandbars and was considered to be an “engineering marvel” for the time. Over a century later, this lighthouse has helped hundreds of thousands of ships navigate the Hudson and draws in just as many adventure-loving history buffs from across the Northeast. This year we commemorate the 150th anniversary of this fixture – with year-round celebrations.
BREATHE IT

Dip your paddle into the secluded RamsHorn Creek and follow the slow current through winding ribbons of land. The creek is teeming with colorful flora and fauna. Along the journey you’ll make acquaintances with dragonflies, great blue herons, flocks of waterfowl, muskrats and river otters, and maybe a bald eagle if you’re lucky. Access to the Hudson River is also possible from the RamsHorn Creek by canoe or kayak.

When author Washington Irving first traveled to the region, a vast wilderness of steep mountainous terrain hovered over the small towns that had been built along the Hudson River. Superstitions loomed large among the dense hemlock forests and mountainsides. Irving would become known as the “Father of the American Ghost Story,” setting the tales of Ichabod Crane and Rip Van Winkle amidst the still mysterious landscape of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains.
All it takes is a trip up the winding mountain road of Route 23A to understand Irving’s enchantment.
The steeply sloped landscape of this region sparks awe and invites all ages and ambitions to wander, explore, discover and set out on adventure. From gliding above the treetops on a skyride, hiking to the Hunter Mountain Fire Tower and hurtling down mountain bike trails on knobby tires, outdoor adventure, arts and cultural opportunities are alive in the Mountain Region.

Catskill Mountain House
Celebrating 200 Years of Grandiosity & Scenic Awe
Established in the early 19th century, the Catskill Mountain House was built on a prominent overlook with stunning panoramic views of the mountains and the Hudson River. The breathtaking vistas played a significant role in the Hudson River School of Art movement, with many renowned artists, including Thomas Cole, painting landscapes inspired by the area. The resort was also a prominent and luxurious mountain hotel, attracting wealthy guests and tourists seeking a retreat from urban life. Even Presidents Grant, Arthur and Theodore Roosevelt vacationed here!
As newer resorts became popular and transportation options improved, the Catskill Mountain House began to decline in popularity. It eventually closed in 1941 and fell into disrepair.
Designated as a historic landmark in the 1960s, the overlook, where the hotel once stood, continues to offer extraordinary views of the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River Valley, attracting hikers and tourists interested in its historical significance and natural beauty.
Still a popular destination today, visitors can enjoy an easy walk from the public parking lot at North-South Lake State Campground.

Settling into the Valley Region of the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County, this area became known as the “Irish Alps.” Irish country inns, bungalows and cultural art centers flourished and kept old-world traditions alive.
Sandwiched between the Mountain Region and River Region, the valley area is known for its cultural attractions, miles of mountain biking trails, scenic beauty and unique events.

GREENVILLE »
Set in a rural area south of Albany’s Capital District, this northern Greene County town boasts expansive views of the Catskill Mountains. The small, historic valley town of Greenville contains a legacy of all-inclusive, family-oriented resorts, including Sunny Hill Resort and Golf Course, Baumann’s Brookside, Pine Lake Manor, and Island Green Resort & Golf Club
The Woodhouse Lodge offers a quiet getaway with hammocks tucked among the trees and fire pits lit every night. The ten-room, Shaker-meets-mid-century-modern hotel is pet friendly and includes an on-site tavern for dinner and drinks. The Tasting Lab is another pub-style restaurant with an extensive list of local craft beverages.
Nostalgia takes the silver screen each summer and fall at the Greenville Drive-In. Classic films and productions from emerging filmmakers top the marquee. Locally sourced snacks and old-time favorites are offered at the snack shack as well as, for those age 21 and older, local craft brews, wine and spirits at the biergarten.
ROUND TOP »
In the Bavarian enclave of Round Top, twisting roads run through towns like highland paths, and wayfinding signs are reminiscent of those you’d find on a trail in the Swiss Alps. This little pocket of the Catskills offers a European feel that can be seen in everything, from the architecture of the buildings to the dirndl and lederhosen wardrobes of waitstaff at German-themed restaurants and beer halls. Many Catskills family resorts are located in Round Top, including Riedlbauer's Resort, Crystal Brook Resort, Winter Clove Inn and Glen Brook Farm
Round Top is also home to world-class mountain biking, incredible nature walks and plenty of scenic spots perfect for photography or plein air painting.
Music, Events & Festivals
Irish heritage is not required to attend the East Durham Irish Festival, a two-day festival held over Memorial Day weekend at the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural & Sports Centre. The event is packed with all the Irish music, dance, food and libations you can handle.
The Round Top Bavarian Summer Fest is a two-day Oktoberfest-style festival with food, drinks, music, dancing and family fun held in June at Riedlbauer's Resort in Round Top.
The Valley Region is renowned for its events. Catskills Irish Arts Week is a seven-day, annual celebration in July featuring music, dancing, workshops and more.
The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival is a multi-day music event featuring the who’s who of bluegrass music, as well as family-friendly workshops, camping, and glamping.
The Annual Catskill Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Festival at Blackthorne Resort in East Durham is the largest motorcycle festival in Upstate New York. Enjoy stunt shows, rodeo games, live music, a vendor expo and bike show with cash prizes. Spectators welcome.
The Greenville Summer Concert Series features free, family-friendly concerts at Veteran's Memorial Park, located in the center of town, during the months of July and August.
Camping
Offering incredible tent and RV camping options from spring through late fall, our family-friendly campgrounds provide game courts, recreation halls, hiking trails, and even guided walks.
At Country Campsites at Michael Dee’s Motel in East Durham, guests enjoy immediate access to quad trails, fishing, and some resident horses for petting.
For a full-service campground experience, head to Whip-O-Will Campsites in Purling to enjoy camping at the lake. From boating and fishing, to spending time bonding at the recreation hall where video games and a pool table provide rainy-day activity, Whip-O-Will offers a great retreat for families.
At Lynch’s Pot O’ Gold in Cairo, a cocktail lounge, sports courts, and a lake make it a popular destination for families of all ages and sizes.
At Doherty’s Campground in Acra, enjoy peaceful camping in proximity to major attractions and events, including the East Durham Irish Festival
Blackthorne Campgrounds in East Durham offers an onsite bar, a nightclub, and access to fishing and hiking trails.

Tour the Great Northern Catskills
The Great Northern Catskills of Greene County, a premier motorcycling destination, features winding mountain passes and backroads with scenic overlooks and breathtaking views. Many of the region’s most charming small towns are located along the tour routes providing places to dine and explore shops. Find the best upstate New York motorcycle trips, including State Route 23, also known as the Mohican Trail, which travels past the Five State Lookout where, on a clear day, visitors can see the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Green Mountains of Vermont, the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, and the Helderberg Mountains of New York and the Connecticut Valley.
Four designated motorcycle routes offer self-guided tour options for all riders from valley lows to mountain highs. The rural motorcycling routes that wind through Greene County are some of the best kept secrets around.
THE CAT’S TAIL TOUR
Stunning vistas and smooth roads. Ride the Cat’s Tail Tour through the Durham Valley Scenic Byway
Leaving from Blackthorne Resort, this out-and-back ride curves like a cat’s tail with stunning vistas and smooth roads. Although this is the shortest of our motorcycle routes, it’s one not to be missed as you will find yourself pulling over frequently to take in the best views of the Hudson Valley.
GRAND TOUR OF THE CATSKILLS
You’ll feel as if you are carving through the mountains.
A more adventurous ride, the Grand Tour of the Catskills’ twisties await you at 3,500 feet elevations through the back country’s sweeping valleys and high peaks. Access the Kaaterskill Falls Viewing Platform from Route 23A to Route 18. Enjoy a ¼-mile hike overlooking the falls and Kaaterskill Clove
EMERALD ISLE TOUR
Breathtaking scenery and expansive views.
The Emerald Isle Tour travels through the Durham Valley Scenic Byway, Greene County’s Irish-settled, scenic countryside. Follow Route 145 to East Durham, home of the East Durham Irish Festival, Catskills Irish Arts Week, Catskill Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Festival and the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. This route includes Cunningham Road, one of the most scenic roads in the Great Northern Catskills with awe-inspiring and stunning views.
MOUNTAIN CLOVE RUN
One of the most spectacular rides through the Catskills. Some of the highest peaks in the Great Northern Catskills rise before you as you drive along the Mountain Clove Run. This round-trip loop provides incredible views of the region’s landscape and a drive-by glimpse of Kaaterskill Falls
Access the Viewing Platform via Route 18 off of Route 23A. Pull over at the Five State Lookout on Route 23 where, on a clear day, you have views of mountain ranges in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut.

Golfing in the Great Northern Catskills
Expansive Fairways & Challenging Courses with Awe-Inspiring Views
The grass is truly greener for golfers in the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County.
The region’s topography offers a challenging game with undulating fairways, shifts in elevations and scenic beauty in every swinging direction.
Just two hours north of New York City and three hours west of Boston, the region is a favorite destination for both serious and casual golfers. Play a mountain course with ultimate views, a valley course amongst lush “greens” or a river course ravishingly awaiting your ”A” game.
RESORT AMENITIES
Several area golf courses are part of larger Catskill resort properties. This means golfers can enjoy additional amenities such as pickleball, fine dining, and many
other family-friendly recreational activities while staying at a resort.
PLAY THE COURSE
Play and stay at Sunny Hill Resort, Christman's Windham House Country Inn and Golf Resort, and Island Green Resort & Golf Club. Each are all inclusive.
Enjoy exceptional mountain views at Christman’s, Colonial Country Club, Thunderhart Golf Freehold, Rip Van Winkle Country Club, Windham Country Club and Sunny Hill Resort golf courses.
Fine-tune your game off season with Thunderhart’s indoor golf simulator.
Test your skills at the area’s only island green at the namesake, Island Green Resort and Golf Club
Take time out to work on your other swing, playing pickleball at one of Catskill Golf Resort’s four new courts.
Enjoy outdoor dining that overlooks the courses at Catskill Golf Club, Colonial Country Club, Island Green, Rip Van Winkle Country Club, Thunderhart Golf Freehold and Windham Country Club
Practice makes perfect with driving ranges offered at every golf course in the county.
Warm up at the driving range at Rieldbauer’s Resort, then cool down with a cold drink at Nussy’s, the resort’s outdoor bier garten.
CRAFT SUMMIT SIPS
Craft Brews and Ciders
Greene County is home to a thriving craft beverage scene, many pet-friendly, with breweries and hard cider makers boasting products made entirely from ingredients grown in New York State. All serve food or feature food trucks on location, and most sell growlers or cans to go. Visit one during your stay, or, even better, stay to visit them all!
Brewery LaHoff | CLIMAX, NY
Just four miles off of New York State Thruway Exit 21B, a picturesque, former fruit packing barn built circa 1900 is home to Brewery LaHoff. This hidden gem offers a rotating list of inspiring in-season and freshly brewed beers like “Fipple Fuzz Hazy IPA,” a French-style Saison, and last fall’s “Blackstrap Bourbon Brown.”
Crossroads Brewing Company Taproom | CATSKILL, NY
Overlooking the Catskill Creek, the taproom serves awardwinning brews. Popular beer selections include their flavorful “Outrage IPA” and its robust “Black Rock Stout” (not for the faint of heart).
Hunter Mountain Brewery | HUNTER, NY
Located just down the street from Hunter Mountain Resort, the Hunter Mountain Brewery offers 15 of its own beers on tap as well as a handful of others. Enjoy fresh mountain air with your food and drink on the brewery’s large deck. Every Thursday is sushi night!
Old Factory Brewing Company | CAIRO, NY
Located in a renovated bottling plant, this brewery carries up to 17 beers on tap available in sampler flights, by the pint, and by the pitcher. Wine, craft cocktails, and slushies (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are also available.
Rip Van Winkle Brewing Company | CATSKILL, NY
Unlike the mysterious brew that induced fictional Rip Van Winkle into a 20-year nap in Washington Irving’s 1819 tale, this established brewery’s broad selection of locally made beers will capture your attention. And the delicious ItalianAmerican menu of paninis, pastas and pizzas will keep you coming back.
Subversive Malting + Brewing | CATSKILL, NY
Subversive is one of a few breweries in the world(!) that produces its own malts using a time- and labor-intensive method called “floor malting.” Their beers are made with locally-grown grains and many feature locally sourced hops, fruits and herbs too. Subversive’s outdoor biergarten glows warm with amber-colored, overhead string lights, picnic tables, and fire pits.
West Kill Brewing | WEST KILL, NY
Located on a former dairy farm down a dead-end road, West Kill was listed among the “Most Scenic Breweries in America to Enjoy Beers With a View” in Men’s Journal, February 2023. The brewery incorporates locally grown and foraged ingredients, such as beers with maple sap boiled in a wood-fired evaporator, cherries picked from West Kill’s orchard, and yeast cultivated locally.
Left Bank Ciders | CATSKILL, NY
Left Bank Ciders makes small-batch hard ciders and meads using ingredients often hand-picked and -foraged from wild and abandoned trees as well as from local orchards in the Catskills and Hudson Valley. In addition to their own ciders and meads, Left Bank offers an impressive list of New York State-produced beers, wines, spirits and other local ciders. Enjoy in the warmly lit, old-brick, ground-level taproom or on the outside patio overlooking the Catskill Creek.
