Vitor Pomar’s vibrant paintings will fill the rooms at Greene’s Tutorial
College from September 15th to December 15th, 2017.
The first exhibition of its kind, celebrating the launch of the college, encircling the observer with sparks of expression, inspiring a new thinking and debate of 21st century visual culture and its impact. With scheduled workshops, students will be invited to express their voice through the strength of a brush stroke, encouraged by Vitor Pomar’s pallet of experience, guiding students to the threshold of their own discoveries.

“Dust and gold leaf deposits” Maria Filomena Molder, adapted from "Rebuçados Venezianos", Relógio d'Água Editores 2016, originally written for the catalogue of the exhibition of Vítor Pomar, "My Own Battlefield", Museu de Serralves, Porto 2003
Fernando Pessoa, The Time of the Devil
How many times has God said to me, quoting Antero de Quental, “Poor me! Poor me! And who am I?”
Teixeira de Pascoais, The Babel
There is a central point in which man can no longer be distinguished from a stone... or from a cloud, (...) All forms adapt to our thought, like a true liquid to the walls of an imaginary vessel.
Vitor Pomar's first works date from the early seventies. “For long years”
(more precisely between 1988 and 1999), seeking a coherent view of the world and of the practice of art (...) led me, on the one hand to suspend (...) all and any creative practice and, on the other hand it allowed me to meet some of the best spitiyual masters still alive at the beginning of the nineties”. These are the words of the artist, who begins to paint again, perhaps under the influence of the light and the colours of the Algarve, in 1999.
My Battlefield Not everyone is given to know that also in the abyss there geologies, mixtures of layers that defy any analysis but cannot dispense with it gold is not that which remains after the dust has been sifted, gold is the very decoding of the dust. The transformation of the dust deposits into gold – truly artistic alchemy – goes beyond, is outside, any sapiental constitution.
(...) Conversion In the Vedic tradition, the warning “like this/this also is you” refers to seeking the more intimate than you to you, the being you yourself without being so, an experience of losing ourselves in order to find ourselves, the resonances of which belong to many cultures. The difference in the recognition of that intimate point is anonimous. Some see this as a foundation, some only consider that it accompanies any name, the unknown atmosphere in which is steeped everything that is out here.
Cosmic Laughter “In the experience of the yogis who do not understand things dualistically, the fact that things are manifested without really existing, is so surprising that they burst into laughing”, Longchenpa, The Choying Dzod. Vitor Pomar sent me this text by e-mail on Marchthe 17th at one thirty-three p.m.
This was my reply a few minutes later. Cosmic laughter (or it would be enough to simply say 'laughter', if it makes any sense to say this) does not like small perceptions, it is anti-creative, dissolving, it comprehends the depths of things, it can neither be mother or father of anything. I will also speak of this, but I prefer to listen to the next moment”, the moment of the persevering, resistant, force of existing. Let us listen to the laughter that breaks up the monks who suddenly understand the irredeemable evanescence, the impermanence of everything here and that is inhabited by duality. How can one free Vitor Pomar's works from that thunderous gaze? (...)
Doubling and Love for Composites The falling into oneself engenders doubling each one is always two. To believe in Fernando Pessoa – and how well he knows it! - , that is the vice of the devil, which is one of the parts of the poet or of the artist not being anything like oneself. And at the same time seeking similarities and afinities everywhere, seeing in the asphalt of the streets the figures and bolts that in the studio are secreted by the paint, by its marks, by lying down the canvases, caches* and remains, signs of many dead languages, many languages yet unborn.
Vítor Pomar was born in Lisbon in 1949 and live and work in Assentiz, Rio Maior.
