CHICAGO
FULL FRONTAL Trophy home: The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club (then the Aspen Ski Club) hosted skiing’s 1941 National Alpine Championships on Aspen Mountain (its clubhouse is seen in the foreground), attracting a record number of skiers to town. In keeping with the club’s long history of hosting national and international competitions, the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Finals returns to Aspen this spring.
ALL TERRAIN THE ASPEN VALLEY S I AND SNOWBOARD CLUB STAYS ITS 80-YEAR COURSE OF EXCELLENCE.
Just a few years after the first-ever Winter Olympics, held in Chamonix, France, in 1924, a group of dedicated Alpine skiers sought to bring the magic of ski racing to the States—more specifically, to Aspen. By 1937, they had formed the Roaring Fork Winter Sports Club, and organizer André Roch soon cut the first ski run into Aspen Mountain. Both still exist today, but while Roch

Run hasn’t changed much, the club— renamed the Aspen Ski Club in 1938 and the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club in 1993—has evolved substantially in its 80 years. Originally dedicated to promoting competitive skiing—and hosting premier events like the National Alpine Championships in 1941 and the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1950—the club has
expanded into teaching and nurturing the local love of sport. In June, former Colby College ski coach Mark Godomsky became AVSC’s new executive director. A ski racer from Farmington, Maine, now with three racing sons, Godomsky was attracted to the club’s competitionmeets-community ethos. “Being from a small town with a small ski resort, I’m familiar with providing opportunities for kids to
get into the mountains,” he says. “I grew up where the school bus dropped you off at the mountain and your parents picked you up afterward.” AVSC operates in the same spirit. Last season, 2,300 young skiers and snowboarders took part in the organization’s numerous winter programs, some of which have produced worldclass athletes. Olympians Dick Durrance, Andy Mill, and Gretchen
Bleiler are alumni, as are U.S. Ski Team members Wiley Maple and Torin Yater-Wallace. Ski stars will be on hand for AVSC’s annual Audi Ajax Cup, on December 30. In March, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals return to Aspen Mountain (see “The Best of the Best,” page 65), where competitors will careen down Spring Pitch, Aztec, Strawpile, and Roch Run, where it all started. teamavsc.org

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
clockwise from left: I ran into former Texas State Senator Wendy Davis at a luncheon; with His Excellency Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, Iceland’s former president; enjoying a Bhutanese lunch at Pine Creek Cookhouse with His Excellency Yeshey Dorji, Bhutan’s minister of agriculture and forests.
IF YOU STOP TO NOTICE IT, the Aspen summer is long, beautiful, rich—and gifts the occasional surprise. A crackerjack Aspen Music Festival and School performance by the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra featured violinist Pinchas Zukerman doing a rare thing— pausing Berg’s Violin Concerto to let pass a cacophony of thunderous rain walloping down on the Benedict Music Tent. Once the rain waned, the crystal-clear tones of Zukerman’s violin rose to a finale, outperforming even Mother Nature.
Aspen has always attracted a who’s who of visitors. We all rub elbows: princesses and rock climbers, tycoons and barmaids. This summer, His Excellency Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson of Iceland accepted an award from AREDAY founders Chip Comins and Sally Ranney. Mayor Steve Skadron spoke of his pride in Aspen’s success in the Georgetown University Energy Challenge (see “Green Thumb,” page 158). The $5 million prize is awarded in December. Fingers crossed—Aspen is currently in third place among 50 US communities. Aspen Peak has the privilege of hosting leaders in the arts, sports, design, politics... My easiest assignment was asking international polo star Nacho Figueras to be this issue’s cover star (see “It’s a Wonderful Life,” page 118). He loves the valley that much. Look for his wife, Delfina, ski racing in support of AVSC. I cycled up Castle Creek Valley with a girl posse to the Pine Creek Cookhouse. We ran into Karinjo DeVore, founding board member of the Aspen International Mountain Foundation, and Pine Creek’s John and Juliet Wilcox. Their chefs prepared a true Bhutanese lunch honoring
His Excellency Yeshey Dorji, Bhutan’s minister of agriculture and forests. As the most spectacular fall colors in memory give way to winter, we look forward to record snow and Aspen Peak’s holiday trifecta: the World Snow Polo Championship, December 15–18, where the globe’s top players will flash their skills in Rio Grande park; the Ajax Cup, where wannabe ski racers go head-to-head against AVSC coaches, alumni, and pros, followed by a joyous celebration for AVSC’s 80th birthday (see “All Terrain,” page 22); and New Year’s Eve, which we’ll be celebrating in style with Aspen Film’s Casino Royale blowout at the St. Regis. Back in 1950, Aspen hosted the first-ever World Cup of ski racing. This March, town welcomes the 2017 FIS World Cup Finals (see “The Best of the Best,” page 65)—the first time the finals will be held outside Europe in 20 years. I’ll be out there with you all, enjoying all that Aspen whirls together in the name of sports, art, culture—and snow.

RODOLFO MARTINEZ
LINDA HAYES
A Miami native, NYCbased photographer Rodolfo Martinez earned his bachelor’s in photojournalism from the University of Miami and his journalism master’s from Syracuse University. He’s worked with celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Debbie Harry, and Eddie Redmayne, and his work has appeared in Paper, OOB, and W magazines. He photographed the “Forces of Nature” fashion feature (page 122).
Aspen-based writer Linda Hayes covers culinary travel, architecture and design, and the luxury lifestyle. Her articles have appeared in Luxe Interiors + Design, Ski, Elle Decor, Food & Wine, and other publications. When she’s not on the road, Hayes makes her home in a modern, architectdesigned straw-bale house with elk and deer for neighbors. She moderated a roundtable discussion with some of Aspen’s top real estate brokers (page 146).
What was a favorite moment during the Aspen shoot? A hailstorm took us by surprise while shooting on the chairlifts. I was one chair ahead of the models (who were dressed for photos—not for a hail storm) when the clouds rolled in. Hail the size of ice cubes starting hitting us across our heads. But, we had a good laugh about it—in the end. Any plans for a ski vacation this winter? I can’t go more than four feet on skis without falling, so… no.
Which area of Aspen do you live in? Old Snowmass. United by a ribbon of a dirt road, our community of neighbors is tight. We know whose car (and whose dog) is whose... Good karma rules. What are your favorite things to do in winter? Give me a mountain view, a crackling fire, and a cocktail, and I’m happy. Do you have a favorite dish at Matsuhisa you always return to? Omakase—all the way!
DOUGLAS BROWN
AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY
Now a partner in two PR firms, Contact High Communications and Bruno RedStar, Boulderbased writer Douglas Brown has covered politics, business, technology, and more for myriad newspapers and magazines, and was a feature writer covering food at the Denver Post for 10 years. He took a tour around booming Denver for this issue’s “Mile High and Rising” (page 80).
Amiee White Beazley is an award-winning travel journalist whose work has been featured in the Washington Post, Robb Report, Wine Enthusiast, and Coastal Living. Her weekly “Escape Artist” column has taken Beazley from the lakes of Italy to the vineyards of Bordeaux, the biking routes of Croatia to the Scottish Highlands. For this issue, she took a look inside the home of Michael and Sabrina Rudin (page 156).
Where do you hang your hat in Denver? I love the food and vibe at Work & Class, the drinks and ambiance at Terminal Bar in Union Station (I call Terminal Bar my Denver office), City Park, and Tattered Cover Book Store in LoDo. Which are your favorite CO spirits and beers? I go ape for Leopold Bros. Aperitivo, a bitter aperitif similar to Campari, minus the red dyes and artificial ingredients. I also dig the ciders crafted by Stem Ciders in Denver. Beer? I do love Avery Brewing’s selection of sour beers.
What kind of interior design are you seeing around town? A lot of eclectic looks inspired by travel. It’s not about fluid design but rather a story of passions, adventures, and lives well-lived, told through art, rugs, and other artifacts from around the world. What’s your favorite view in town? On a weekday morning, after hiking up Tiehack with my husband and dog, the reward is Pyramid Peak dressed in the early morning sun. You can’t beat it.

It’s on. From March 15 through 19, the world’s fastest skiers will take to the slopes of Aspen Mountain as they come to compete in the 2017 Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals. This is the first time the Finals, the ultimate event of each World Cup
season, have been staged in Aspen, and the first time they have been held in America in 20 years. Not only do the Finals mark the return of the men’s World Cup races after a 15-year hiatus, they also herald a new age for ski racing in Aspen: For America’s most famed ski town, it doesn’t get any better than hosting the world’s best. As the competitors get ready to ride town’s historic Lift 1A to the top of the mountain to test their mettle, Aspen Peak takes a look at the numbers...

WITH A PROPRIETARY BLEND OF HUSTLE AND BUSTLE, CRAIG AND SAMANTHA CORDTS-PEARCE STEER TOWN’S EVER-COMPETITIVE RESTAURANT SCENE. BY CHRISTINE BENEDETTI
Town tall: While CP’s restaurant concepts are first informed by their spaces, it’s the fresh, sumptuous fare—such as a braised rabbit poutine with cheese curds, house-cut fries, and dijon mustard gravy, at The Monarch—that helps the group’s properties stand out in a crowded downtown dining scene.
68 ASPENPEAK-MAGAZINE.COM
In a literal sense, Craig and Samantha Cordts-Pearce have just about cornered the restaurant market in Aspen: At least one of their establishments can be found on just about every block downtown. Since entering the scene with the Mediterranean Wild Fig in 2003, the couple has added two high-end steakhouses,
Steakhouse No. 316 and The Monarch, and CP Burger, a diner-style joint with a classic feel. That quartet makes CP Restaurant Group the largest single-owner group in Aspen (and largest overall behind Aspen Skiing Company). Here, Samantha Cordts-Pearce talks about self-focus, honoring space, and the power of hustle.
How do you find inspiration for four dining spots while giving each one its own identity? The actual space speaks to the cuisine and concept that we’ll do. Like when we were reconceptualizing Brexi into The Monarch, we wanted to give it a new kick, what with that side of town being rejuvenated. We tried to think what would be a good concept other than a French restaurant. If you look at the space, it wouldn’t

make a very good Chinese restaurant; it wouldn’t make a good rib house. We realized, though, that it would make a beautiful, high-end steakhouse. You have the largest share of restaurants in town with a single owner. Do you see your influence on others in Aspen? We don’t really pay attention to what other people do. We just do what we do. I feel like we help to keep the bar high in town, whether we influence other people or not. Describe Aspen’s dining scene in three words. Competitive, somewhat predictable, and well-seasoned. What’s the most exciting thing on your menus this winter? We have a lot of menus! The Monarch is offering a whole Dover sole. We have amazing caviar service and a tableside Caesar. Wild Fig has the best fresh pasta program in town, with house-made pastas. And CP Burger is CP Burger. You and Craig both started as servers and bartenders. There’s a handful of people who have worked their way up in this town—it’s a hard town to make it in. To be able to move here as kids and then make it and raise kids and be successful, it’s a harder feat than a lot of people think when trying. It’s great to have been able to do that, and hang without having the bankroll behind us. The Wild Fig, 315 E. Hyman Ave., 970-925-5160; Steakhouse No. 316, 316 E. Now, the gallery—which Sanford opened with his wife, Dorothy Wildman, after moving to Aspen from Chicago in the spring of ’97—will honor its time in town with something of a retrospective. “Then and Now: Modern, Postwar, and Contemporary Prints” will encompass more than
50 pieces of the gallery’s 20th and 21st century works on paper. The modern component will place focus on Joan Miró and include pieces that have never before been on the market. Prints from the likes of Cy Twombly, Donald Judd, and Ed Ruscha fill out the postwar period. The final
movement will feature the work of Anish Kapoor, Christopher Le Brun, and other British contemporary artists, a group “where we sort of hang our hat,” says Sanford. There, yes—and here. Then—and now. December 20–April 1, 2017, 602 E. Cooper Ave., 970925-6100; galeriemax.com

THE WHEELER OPERA HOUSE ROLLS OUT A SEASON OF BIG NAMES—AND EVEN BIGGER AMBITIONS. BY CHRISTINE BENEDETTI
When tickets to the Beach Boys at the Wheeler Opera House went on sale this summer, they sold so quickly that organizers hurried to add a second afternoon performance for the same day, December 28. The Grammy Award-winning legends are just one of several well-known acts slated to take the historic stage this winter, reflecting the leadership of Gena Buhler, who took the helm of executive director in 2015. “I think it is a testament to the desire from the Aspen community to see bigger name acts on the Wheeler stage,” says Buhler. “Bigger names bring a level of trust and prestige to a venue, and with such an amazing, historic lineage of acts that have performed here, we are really excited to up the ante a bit on what the community will see moving forward.” One of the goals of this programming, she adds, is to “bring new and different audiences to the Wheeler, which in the long run helps to build audiences.” Among the artists helping to advance that mission this season are The Blind Boys of Alabama (December 17), comedian Kevin Smith (December 18), and the Ten Tenors (December 25). “For the first time in a long time, we’ll have robust holiday-time programming, and I’m pleased with the diversity,” she says. “I’m hoping that we’ll be able to find a place in everyone’s holiday traditions.” Since taking over one year ago, Buhler has been influential in

expanding Wheeler’s programming to include everything from more family-friendly shows to an “On the Rise” band series. Major headliners litter the calendar. Last year, Wheeler Wins, a membership rewards program for loyal concertgoers, rolled out, and this winter promises to see a new website. But one of the opera house’s most high-profile programs is the production of its own four-day comedy festival—a move to fill the void created when the HBO Comedy Festival pulled out of Aspen nearly a decade ago. Cue Whitney Cummings, Margaret Cho, Adam Devine, and Kevin Nealon to dole out the giggles from February 22 through February 25. And if it seems like this all means more competition for Belly Up, Aspen’s 450-person nightclub and music venue, it’s quite the opposite. Belly Up staff has been contracted to run the Wheeler’s concession and bar area, and the two have even partnered to lure those betterknown bands to town. It all translates into a win for the Wheeler—and its fans. 320 E. Hyman Ave., 970-920-5770; wheeleroperahouse.com

In Aspen bars, winter means whiskey, sure, as well as hot cocktails and spiked ciders. But this season, town’s best bars are also touting lighter, more refreshing drinks mixed over ice—and with “sunnier” spirits. TEQUILA
BOURBON
Still, a classic is a classic: Nothing beats the cold quite like warming whiskey. In town, Justice Snow’s (328 E. Hyman Ave., 970-4298192; justicesnows.com) offers the ultimate delivery: Justice at the Alamo, featuring Breckenridge bourbon, rye, Scotch, peach bitters, amaro, and Punt e Mes. According to bartender Danny Selig, “The warming blend of smoke, spice, citrus, and peach is what makes this cocktail perfect for winter.”

Come winter, Element 47 (675 E. Durant Ave., 970-9206330; thelittlenell.com) mixes up a surprising cold-weather warmer. Xavier’s White Cosmopolitan, made with vodka, St-Germain, and white cranberry and lime juices, offers a blast of light florals and fruit. “What makes Xavier’s White Cosmopolitan a great winter cocktail is how easy it is to drink,” says bar manager Ricardo Leyvas, “with the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, capped by floral aromas [of] summer wildflowers.”

With a warm, south-of-theborder vibe, Casa Tua (403 S. Galena St., 970920-7277; casatualifestyle .com) is a go-to for tequila cocktails. The Scogliera blends tequila, Aperol, Cointreau, and lime juice into a refreshing reminder of beach days past. “It’s a cocktail on the lighter side,” says manager Christine Rueggeberg—a delicious counterpart to the “heavy, sugar-based cocktails often expected for the season.”

Those who study the migratory patterns of 20-somethings find them flocking to Denver. A booming job market, access to the mountains, and, yes, the legal status of cannabis have turned the city into one of the hottest locations in the country for setting down roots. But Denver is also attracting visitors. Tourism numbers have steadily increased for the past ten-plus years—and for good reason. Longestablished neighborhoods like LoDo have been freshly rejuvenated, and areas that five years ago were melancholy industrial zones now seem

incandescent with energy. Restaurants, bars, boutiques, and more have sprouted amidst the tech start-ups, breweries, and other businesses moving to the Mile High. One must-stop spot: Denver Central Market (2669 Larimer St.; denvercentralmarket.com), a new food hall in the fizzy RiNo neighborhood (see “melancholy industrial zones,” above). The 12,000-square-foot marketplace supports 13 vendors, like Culture, a fabulous meat and cheese shop from Denver restaurateur Justin Brunson, and SK Provisions, which

slow-roasts meats in a pair of antique rotisserie ovens. Fish market? Check. Italian joint? Yep. Chocolatier, bakery, butcher, bar, coffee shop? Yes to all, and more! Make plans to hit nearby LoDo, too, where longtime local chef John Broening and his wife, acclaimed pastry chef Yasmin LozadaHissom, have opened Avelina (1550 17th St., 720-904-6711; avelina denver.com). The gorgeous space, enveloped in warm earth tones and textures, offers a smart menu divided into small and large plates. Broening’s beloved duck liver mousse joins new items such as a roasted chicken for two with chorizo, flageolet beans, and spicy greens. Lozada-Hissom’s sweeter contributions include a coconut panna cotta and a citrus olive oil cake. Downtown, enjoy coffee, lunch, or drinks on the roof of the excellent Museum of Contemporary Art (1485 Delgany St., 303-298-7554; mcadenver.org). But first tour the museum’s three new exhibitions, each on view through late January 2017: a solo show by sculptor and installation artist Nathan Carter; the first major survey of work by Boulder artist Kim Dickey; and a group show, “Bodacioussss,” with pieces from 20 digitally influenced artists. Capitol Hill—at once charming (historic housing stock) and gritty (Colfax Avenue)—ups the charm factor with Black Eye Coffee (800 Sherman St., 303-955-1205; drink blackeye.com), an Art

Swing by Terminal Bar in Union Station (Union Station Food Court, 720-460-3701; terminalbardenver.com), the city’s recently overhauled transit hub (with light rail to Denver International), which now offers a swell cast of restaurants, from fine dining to deli. Terminal Bar stands as its throbbing heart, serving drinks inside and to tables throughout the open-air station. For lodging, several outstanding new hotels dot the city, but the leader remains the historic favorite Hotel Teatro (1100 14th St., 303-228-1100; hotelteatro.com), in the theater district. The swank spot, with its excellent restaurant, The Nickel (720-889-2128; thenickel denver.com), is a paragon of class and service, repeatedly winning “best of” awards for its excellence. From the looks of it, the rest of the city is following suit.

BODE-FIED THE MOST SUCCESSFUL, STORIED SKIER IN HISTORY TEAMS UP WITH ASPEN SKIWEAR BRAND AZTECH MOUNTAIN.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRUNO STAUB (PORTRAIT); JESSE JAMES HOFFMAN (SKIERS)
BY GREG FITZSIMMONS
Bode Miller’s introduction to Aztech Mountain, the Aspen-based luxury ski and lifestyle sportswear brand for men, was battle-tested. On a August, 2015, photo shoot in Portillo, Chile, the weather turned nasty; winds were whipping, snow was blowing, and the temperature was frigid. “I kept gravitating back to this jacket from Aztech Mountain, a brand I had never heard of,” says Miller, 39. “It had a better fit and better cut than everything else. It was warmer and more useful than the rest of the wardrobe. By the end of the day, I had a good idea of the jacket’s performance and attributes. It was the best ski jacket I’d ever put on.” Fast-forward one month to an uptown soirée in New York, in the Fifth Avenue penthouse of real estate developer Robert Siegel, a principal investor in handcrafted ski company Bomber. Miller, in attendance, spotted the cofounder and owner of Aztech Mountain across the room and approached him to praise his upstart company. Born-and-bred Aspenite Heifara Rutgers was stunned—Miller, the six-time Olympic medalist, winner of 33 World Cup races, and two-time World Cup champion, was his childhood idol. That night, Miller and Rutgers, along with Rutgers’s partner, Aztech cofounder David Roth, forged a friendship that would soon turn into something bigger. Miller, so impressed by Aztech’s wares, joined the ranks at the burgeoning Aspen-based brand last September as an equity partner and chief innovation officer. While the brand launched in New

York, in 2013, Aztech Mountain’s Aspen DNA informs its spirit. Its jackets, pants, shirts, and base layers are now stocked at retailers like Performance Ski at the base of Aspen Mountain, Barneys New York, Harrods in London, and Mr Porter online, while the menswear brand’s creative use of fabrics (specifically mixing high-end natural fabrics like wool with high-tech synthetics, such as ultra-strong nylon), seamless stitching, and world-class technical performance have long been lauded by its devoted following. Indeed, nine months before Miller came on board, Aztech won the 2016 ISPO BRANDNEW entrepreneurial award for style, a coveted piece of hardware given out at the biggest ski industry tradeshow in the world. In his new role, Miller is focusing his creativity and incessant tinkering on adapting Aztech’s products for both mountain and city—continuing to outperform the competition on Ajax but equally turning heads on the streets in New York. “I want to be able to wear a technically advanced ski jacket on the hill that looks great at the restaurant or bar the night after skiing,” says Miller. “That has been my life for the last 20 years. That’s what I do.” “A lot of what drives me is to provide a better experience for the user. That’s a big part of my motivation,” he adds. “Aztech Mountain is a company that believes the same thing. We’re at an interesting time where, if you are creative and you have the experience, you can do some amazing things.” Performance Ski, 614 E. Durant Ave., 970-925-8657; aztechmountain.com

STYLE IT COUPLE “WE BOTH THOUGHT IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE ROOTS IN THIS TOWN. THAT’S WHAT DRIVES US.” — CHRIS ROBERTS
TEXAS TRANSPLANTS CHRIS AND KATE ROBERTS TURN THEIR LIFE EXPERIENCES INTO A PAIR OF ASPEN BOUTIQUES. BY TIM LATTERNER
Western union: Husband-andwife boutique owners Kate and Chris Roberts, shown here on Aspen’s Marolt Ranch, harmonize their disparate shops, Katebaby & Kids and Aspen Hatter (FAR RIGHT, FROM TOP), with a commitment to town.
92
At first sight, it would appear that the similarities between Chris and Kate Roberts’s Aspen boutiques are few. The reality of being a small-business owner in town, though, means that this husband and wife run their shops with the same values. “We both thought it important to have roots in this town,” says Chris of his store, Aspen Hatter (465 N. Mill St., 970-300-8355; aspenhatter.com), and his

wife’s boutique, Katebaby & Kids (205 S. Mill St., 970-925-2400; katebaby. com). “That’s what drives us.” Of course, a successful small business requires more than just local roots. A custom hat shop, Aspen Hatter was born when Chris, an Austin native who has lived on Texas ranches and in the cowboy country of Jackson, Wyoming, moved to Aspen in 2013 and began getting compliments on the
brimmed hats he had made for himself. Creating for the public now, Chris, 36, constructs hats for all of town—from the roughneck rancher to the fashionforward woman. Katebaby was similarly born from its owner’s experience. “For me, having two young kids, I try and [stock] things I’d want to see them in,” says Kate, 33, also a Texas native, who adds that her buying strategy is to
fill the store with “what I actually like”—that is, colorful onesies, dresses, shoes, and décor items, such as dressers and tables, from brands like TOMS, Billabong, and Milly Minis. “I think we’re fortunate that we found passions for specified retail offering something new,” says Kate. “We both are frequented by visitors and locals. We appeal to anyone, not just one specific shopper.”

SITTING PRETTY AFTER 40 YEARS, ASPEN’S HOMEGROWN BEAUTY AUTHORITY IS FRESHER THAN EVER. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE
“Until 1976, there was no place in the United States you [could] buy cosmetics outside of a department store or drugstore,” says Lily Garfield. That’s when a light bulb went off in her head. “I said to myself, I know how to do this.” After spending several years working for Love Cosmetics at Bloomingdale’s in

Manhattan, Garfield moved to Aspen and, with less than $5,000, opened town’s beloved Cos Bar. Today, the luxe retail cosmetics chain boasts 14 stores across the country, including one in New York’s new Brookfield Place, and more growth is forthcoming. “There are a lot of untapped markets
we’re looking at,” says Garfield, who plans on opening 35 more locations in the next five years, including in LA’s tony Brentwood nabe. But the self-described skincare maven says her best sellers in Aspen are still the classics: “Sunscreen or moisturizer—whatever it takes to protect and hydrate
your skin at 8,000 feet above sea level.” After a day on the slopes, Garfield suggests applying a mask, like FlashPatch Eye Gels from Patchology or Orlane’s new Crème Royale Sublime Mask, to rehydrate the skin. She also recommends Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion, the latest from La Prairie, followed by Clé de Peau’s
new Radiant Multi Repair Oil. And for “something that highlights” on New Year’s Eve, try Tom Ford’s Winter Soleil Eye and Cheek Palettes for the perfect contrast between highlighter and blush. “And the packaging is just gorgeous,” Garfield adds. Naturally! 309 S. Galena St., 970-9256249; cosbar.com

SHINE ON FOR HOLIDAY SEASON ADORNMENTS, TOWN’S TOP JEWELERS AGREE: GO ALL OUT!
There’s more to Aspen’s winter jewelry game than the presumed turtlenecks and turquoise baubles. From the slopes to the soirées, the trend to rock this season is simple, according to Ignacio Munoz, manager of Van Cleef & Arpels (Les Bijoux, 400 E. Hyman Ave., 888-984-4822; vancleefarpels.com): “Sparkles! Whether on your neck, wrist, or ears.” That goes for stackable bracelets, chokers, and rings—such as the Ovale and Émeraude pieces
from Lisa Des Camps (lisadescamps.com), the part-time Aspenite who will be displaying her Southwestern wares at trunk shows in town all winter long. “And for party wear, don’t forget about boulder opals,” she adds of the multicolored gemstones found at the heart of many of her pendant necklaces. “I love seeing a strong, confident woman bucking the norm and rocking a piece that no one would ever expect,” agrees Meridian

The same principle extends to ear-wear, with Jacquie Aiche ear bands and jackets and Pamela Love crawlers from Covet (306 S. Mill St., 970920-0000; covetaspen .com) defying the notion that earrings are rings worn through the lobe. But traditional doesn’t have to mean boring, says Munoz, pointing to the 20-motif long necklace from Van Cleef’s Vintage Alhambra collection. And for that extra-plunging neckline, he suggests, look to the diamondrowed necklaces from the Palmyre collection.

Globetrotters, rejoice: Marrying German engineering with French chic, Rimowa and Moncler’s latest luggage collab (HERE AND TOP LEFT, from $1,700) proves worthy of Moncler swear-bys like Brigitte Bardot (ABOVE) and Jackie O. (LEFT).
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MONCLER
If Rimowa is synonymous with invincible hard-case luggage, and Moncler with impossibly chic puffer coats, then any collaboration between the two is destined for must-have status. The German-based luggage company and the French sport apparel label’s first collaboration came about in 2012, and the two are teaming up once again to introduce the Multiwheel Topas Stealth collection, combining Moncler’s sleek high-fashion style with Rimowa’s high-tech innovation. The collection boasts a lightweight gray aluminum exterior (with Rimowa’s signature grooves, of course) in three different sizes, each with a quilted camouflage fabric developed by Moncler specifically for the collection. Even better, the silenced Multiwheel gliding system, in addition to optimal functionality and maneuverability, makes for quiet traveling across any terminal or tarmac. And with accessories like footwear bags and wash bags—perfect for all of those personal possessions and TSA-approved liquids—it’s the ultimate set of luggage to get you from Aspen to the Costa Smeralda and back again. ART NOUV-EAU THESE GALLERY-WORTHY PERFUME BOTTLES ARE MEANT TO BE ON DISPLAY. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE
Attention! The newest highfashion fragrance releases come in bottles as exquisite as the perfumes within. When Christian Louboutin enlisted architect Thomas Heatherwick to design the containers for his three new scents, including Tornade Blonde, the results were stunning undulated glass bottles,
each with a central aperture. “It was no longer a single volume, but became a ring of perfume,” says Heatherwick. “Christian wanted to a create a flow of fragrance within the bottle.” Other designers have played with the toppers to create artistry as well as functionality. Influenced by the brand’s Intarsio jewelry

collection, Bulgari’s Le Gemme Orientali collection features a cabochonshaped stopper with a gold design reminiscent of Mediterranean architecture, while the opulent structural cap of Sisley’s Soir d’Orient, designed by contemporary artist Bronisław Krzysztof, resembles a crown.
For the Black Orchid Lalique Edition, Tom Ford called on the famed crystal house to create a finely fluted, Art Deco black crystal bottle. (A limited edition, only 1,200 pieces were created, each engraved by Lalique with a unique edition number.) More surreal is Cartier’s new scent for men, L’Envol
de Cartier, which sits in a removable—and refillable— capsule within a detachable glass dome. Seen from a distance, it’s as if the elixir is levitating. Says Cartier perfumer Mathilde Laurent, “We developed 2,000 drawings over more than two years [in order] to achieve the perfect masterpiece.”

STYLE SPOTLIGHT Cling and conform: The clothes come to feel like a “second layer,” says GM Mauricio Hoyos of Jitrois’s stretch leather wear, including (FROM LEFT) the embroidered suede Nicki dress ($3,770) and lambskin Queen dress with silk and sequins ($6,500), both from the current Autumn/Winter collection.

catching on to the sleek, stylish aesthetic, making Jitrois Aspen’s de rigueur off-the-slopes wear. Designer Jean Claude Jitrois has taken the idea that a leather jacket can be both protective and flamboyant and applied it to an entire collection, resulting in pieces that
reflect his fascination with fashion and psychology. They’re also undeniably sexy. “We accentuate a woman’s silhouette in all the right places,” says Mauricio Hoyos, general manager of Jitrois Aspen, about the skin-tight, made-for-any-event black leather pants and strappy
leather corset-style tops. But the shop, one of just two in the States (the flagship is in New York, with a Miami outpost settling in this winter), also lightens the palette for the mountain-town fashionista. While every piece in the collection can be custommade, some, like the
Agatha and Kourou minidresses, come in an off-white designed specifically for the brand’s Aspen clientele. That means skiers off the slopes can slip into something infinitely more stylish than jeans and flannel, but just as comfortable. 424 E. Cooper Ave., 970-925-2272; jitrois.com

SAVING FACE A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TREATMENT MAKES THE DREADED DOUBLE CHIN A THING OF THE PAST.
A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Utilizing precise injections of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells, Kybella, which enjoyed phenomenal success during clinical trials, has emerged as something of a miracle fix—for the appropriate patients, of course. “It’s a great product in the right circumstance, but the patient selection has to be correct,” says Dr. Stephen C. Adler, a Miami-based facial plastic surgeon. “It’s best in younger patients between 30 and 45 [who have] some fullness under the chin but otherwise good skin texture and tension.” “Kybella’s role is strategic and limited only to fat under the chin,” adds Adler. “It’s not the same as a neck lift, because it does not pull or tighten the muscles. It also takes two or three sessions, and there is a recovery time of a few weeks in between.” Whatever it takes to unearth your true face… Treatment programs can range from $1,300 to $7,200; mykybella.com

“My family goes to Aspen because we love it, and snow polo is the perfect excuse to go,” says international polo star (and international hunk...) Nacho Figueras, seen here competing with Team Black Watch for the 2014 World Snow Polo Championship at the Aspen Valley Polo Club, where he’ll return in December for the 2016 tournament.
IT’S A
WONDERFUL LIFE As the crowds pour in for the Aspen Snow Polo Championship, December 15–18, polo great and man-about-“town” nacho figueras reveals why Aspen has become home sweet mountain home. BY NADINE SCHIFF-ROSEN
I
f the name Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras doesn’t immediately sound familiar to you, take a glimpse at his smoldering, chiseled face and you will recognize him as one of the world’s most photographed models—the sultry brand ambassador for Ralph Lauren’s men’s fragrances. He’s that dude, seducing you from magazine covers, buses, and billboards all over the world—only this scorching visage is more than just a pretty face. Ranked as one of the world’s top polo players, he races his beloved horses at heart-attack speeds through polo fields from Buenos Aires to the Hamptons, from Los Angeles to Dubai, and this December, to Aspen. Committed to bringing the “sport of kings” to the masses through his global events and tournaments, he attracts celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Madonna, Chloë Sevigny, and even his good pal Prince Harry to cheer him on. But all for a good cause. Figueras’s philanthropic work, pairing horses and inner cities and special-needs kids, is not only democratizing the sport; it’s raising the bar for therapeutic equine programs the world over. For fun, he advances his own brand by authoring steamy romance novels featuring—wait for it—a sexy polo player. But don’t believe everything you read. In real life, Figueras, 39, has been married for 18 years to Delfina Blaquier, the love of his life and the mother of their four children. When he’s not competing on the field, Figueras runs a serious horsebreeding operation in an ultramodern stable near his farm in Buenos Aires. As a co-owner of Black Watch, a polo team in America, he aspires to bring horses and the sport of polo into the entrepreneurial mainstream of entertainment, creating fashion, television series, movies, and even theme
parks. Can this multitalented athlete have it all? Probably so. With his movie star looks, influential friends, and business savvy, Nacho Figueras is well on his way to achieving his Hollywood (and, yes, Aspen) field of dreams.
TICKET TO RIDE Why did you become a polo player? I love polo, first and foremost. I started playing at 9, became a professional at 16, and as I grew, I got to love the horses even more than the sport. The horses really became a big part of my life and my family’s life. We are now breeding horses and have a big operation. My eldest son is 16, and very soon he too will become a professional polo player. So just when I thought I couldn’t love the sport any more, playing the game with my 6-foot-3-inch son brings it to a whole other level. What has been the most challenging time for you as a polo player? I broke my hip in 2013 in England, which was the worst accident I ever had. It was hard, tough, for many different reasons. At the same time, it also gave me a lot of perspective. For 20 years I had been playing, playing, playing, nonstop. And then I stayed home and fell into this highway of emotions. So the accident helped me take a break and miss the game—miss a lot of things. When you came back, were you afraid? You can’t be afraid. Polo requires all of your senses, and you need to be very awake. If you’re afraid, you can’t really ride, or play at a high level. So, thank God, fear did not affect me. You call Prince Harry your friend? Tell us about your relationship. Prince Harry and I are very close. We talk all the time. He’s a great

guy. Very much like his mom. I started playing polo with him about 10 years ago, and I could tell right away this guy was real. He was there because he cared about the charitable purpose of the polo match, which was HIV/AIDS in southern Africa. He is very committed to his philanthropic work, and to making the world a better place. You need to fix him up with a great lady. We’re working on that. [Laughs] He does deserve the best woman in the world. And he will find her very soon because he’s a good soul. It’s gonna happen. You model for Ralph Lauren, and you call him a mentor. Why? I admire Ralph Lauren tremendously. I think that he is someone, in spite of his successful life, who is very grounded. A couple of times a year, we go into his office; we sit and talk and discuss life. He is a wonderful man who has experience and wisdom. What’s next after polo? I see polo as a brand that has not been cracked as a medium for entertainment: books, television series, movies. You are the first person I am telling this, but I have a dream to do equestrian theme parks. I believe horses have a magical impact on people. Years ago the world revolved around horses—chariots, wars, races… And I think the world is always looking for the new in old ideas. I have five or six more years to play polo, and then I want to travel, put on exhibitions, and grow polo into something more entrepreneurial.
Delfina: Luckily, I love sports, just like my husband. So it’s great to share that. I’m not just hard-core—I am a maniac! Sometimes I get a little too carried away. But it doesn’t matter how hard you try. Children always need more of your time. So you have to get creative in your marriage. Nacho: I don’t go anywhere for more than a week without bringing my wife and children. We like to take the kids out of their comfort zone, and they have made friends everywhere they go. They have their own global community. And sometimes I travel with my wife alone, or tack on a couple of days to a business trip and it’s like being on a honeymoon.
ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE Nacho, why snow polo in Aspen? We go to Aspen because we love it, and snow polo is the perfect excuse to go. Not only is the polo a lot of fun, but the Aspen polo building [the Aspen Valley Polo Club] is an amazing structure. What is a great day in Aspen? We have breakfast and then we go skiing. My kids and my wife are hard-core skiers. So we start at 9, and we are always the family that skis the last run of the day. Sometimes we go to Buttermilk with our 3-year-old, and then we go to the Highlands for the black runs. We go to Aspen Mountain, too. My wife is a very good skier. Better than me. THE LODGE LIFE AN 82-ACRE MARVEL HITS THE MARKET IN THE CASTLE CREEK VALLEY.

BY CHRISTINE BENEDETTI
A homestead-turned-dude ranch-turned-coal baron’s dream house, Elk Mountain Lodge embodies 110 years of Wild West history. And now the vast 82-acre, 12-building property, located at 125 Rooney Circle in the pristine Castle Creek Valley, is ready for its next chapter: Its owner, billionaire energy magnate William Koch, has placed it on the market for $80 million. The 14,987-squarefoot, eight-bedroom main lodge served as a venue for weddings and other events from the mid-’80s until 2007, when Koch purchased the property. But after extensively renovating the buildings—his additions include a 2,200-square-foot temperature-controlled wine cellar and a media room that also functions as a hyperbaric chamber—he is ready to sell off his ties to the Aspen area, and Douglas Elliman brokers Joshua Saslove, Raifie Bass, and Wendy Wogan (970-925-8810; elliman .com) are helping him do it. “Once you get there, you don’t need to

leave—you don’t want to leave,” says Saslove. The mammoth property’s amenities include two hot tubs (one said to be the largest in Colorado), a fitness center, and a commercial-grade kitchen with a wood-fired pizza oven. The main lodge boasts luxurious details like leather-wrapped staircase railings and zebrawood floors. Nearby

recreational opportunities include hiking, biking, hunting, and cross-country skiing, and the historic ghost town of Ashcroft and the quintessential high-alpine eatery Pine Creek Cookhouse are neighbors. Offering private quarters, the seven cabins surrounding the main lodge are equally comfortable and part of the $80 million package.
Three of the property’s other houses, while included in the listing, may also be bought separately. One of them, the Crystal Lake House, sits on 21 acres surrounded by ponds stocked with fish. It features a full-size basketball court, an entertainment hall, and two kitchens, making it perfect for large parties. The house’s two wings are connected by a heated
interior bridge. The Ashcroft House and the American Lake House are the two “smaller” structures, but like the others, they are exemplars of rustic Western mountain style. Whether its next owner employs it as a family compound or rents it out for corporate retreats, one thing is certain: Elk Mountain Lodge’s history is far from over.

The Rocky Mountains may seem an unlikely place to channel the highlands of what’s now Zimbabwe, but that’s exactly where Stuart Ross saw potential to honor his Rhodesian roots. When he and his wife, Val, found a dilapidated, 530-acre parcel in Garfield County—surrounded by federally

protected land on three sides—they “saw a diamond in the rough,” according to listing broker Kelli GardnerMarshall of Palladium Properties. Stuart grew up as a farmer in Africa and used that background, along with his Colorado State University degree in agronomy, to transform the property into a
series of wetlands, ponds, pastures, and open spaces around a contemporary home designed by Jack Snow of RKD Architects. That was 2012, and now that the Rosses have restored the land, Inyanga Ranch is on the market for $23 million. “I’ve never seen a property so unique and
pristine,” says GardnerMarshall. Abundant groundwater feeds the nine ponds and irrigates the land, creating a verdant and pristine oasis near the Flat Tops Wilderness between Glenwood Springs and Rifle. It’s also a haven for wildlife, with bears, wild turkeys, and 75 resident elk regularly
spotted about the land. The Rosses are ready to part with their prized property, says GardnerMarshall. After four years, they’re moving onto another international project, and it’s guaranteed they’ll take a little piece of home with them. palladiumaspen.com; rkdarch.com

ESTATE OF AFFAIRS TIME TO INVEST OR SELL, SELL, SELL? THREE REAL ESTATE AUTHORITIES TAKE TOWN’S PULSE. BY LINDA B. HAYES
Venerable Matsuhisa (303 E. Main St., 970544-6628; matsuhisa restaurants.com) played host to a roundtable discussion between three of town’s top brokers. Between bites of beautifully prepared sashimi, they discussed the ins and outs of the Aspen real estate market, from the effects of the building moratorium to bright spots for 2017. What, in your opinion, is the current state of the Aspen market? Doug Leibinger: It’s pretty healthy. My sense is that all of a sudden there was a lack of good inventory, and everybody went into a pause. People who had $10, $15, $20 million said, “Maybe I’ll wait for a while to see how things shake out.” All that
146 ASPENPEAK-MAGAZINE.COM
money is still on the sideline and will come back on the market. Will Burggraf: People say, “Oh, we’re off.” But it’s comparing it to one of the most robust years ever [2015]. We’re seeing steady and slightly increased average prices-by-squarefoot in the core, the West End. Townhomes and penthouses are selling at all-time highs. Where do you have adequate inventory? Carol Dopkin: Older homes in the $10 millionplus range have five years of inventory. Everything else has one to three years. Volumes are down in $20 to $30 million sales. DL: Between [Aspen] and Carbondale, 1,000 properties are on the market. Where downvalley had been held at bay, it’s [now] in resurgence.

“THERE ARE SOME KEY MARKETS PEOPLE FLOCK TO—ASPEN IS ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE PLACES IN THE COUNTRY, EVEN GLOBALLY.” —DOUG LEIBINGER 148 ASPENPEAK-MAGAZINE.COM
There are some new properties on the market. What are they and who’s buying them? DL: There are 11 properties over $9 million under contract right now, nine in the core or West End. All new products—townhomes, new build. All fresh, new mountain contemporary style. CD: Five of those were bought by developers to finish off… WB: There are a lot of group investors buying properties, but we’re [also] seeing people taking the reins. It’s hard to jump through all the hoops to get approval to do construction. People are willing to pay a premium not to do that. What effect has the building moratorium in the West End had on the market? The community? WB: Anytime there’s limited supply, the demand doesn’t fluctuate that much, so you’re going to see increasing prices. DL: Moderation in the
building cycle rather than on-and-off-again would help the community. How do you feel about the state of downvalley communities at the moment? DL: Snowmass Base Village finally sorting itself out will really help that market go back into an upswing. CD: I’m finding the Basalt area in particular is good for investment properties because the rental market is strong. Are you optimistic about where the Aspen real estate market is heading for 2017? CD: I’m the eternal optimist. I think because the price-persquare-foot has held, it shows how solid our base is. DL: There are some key markets people flock to, and one of them is Aspen. This is one of the most desirable places in the country, [even] globally. Why wouldn’t we be okay long-term?

BEDTIME STORY WITH ITS LATEST LAUNCH, ULTRA-LUXE BED BRAND HÄSTENS HAS CLIENTS SLEEPING LIKE SWEDISH ROYALTY. BY LAUREN EPSTEIN
Ten years ago, Jack Ryde, the late fourth-generation owner of Swedish bed manufacturer Hästens, set out to create the greatest bed in the world. That sweet dream came true with the company’s blue-checked masterpiece: Vividus. “When we launched Vividus, we never intended for it to be a bed that stops evolving,” says Jan Ryde, Jack’s son and Hästens’ current owner and executive chairman. This fall, the company re-launches its flagship bed, whose construction requires 320 hours of work from four certified craftsmen focused on every detail, from the northern Swedish redwood frame to the hand-sewn layers of
horsehair, cotton, and wool in the customized bodycontouring mattress. The piece is quite literally fit for a king—Hästens was appointed Purveyor to H.M. the King of Sweden in 1952 and has served as official supplier to the Swedish Royal Court ever since—and carries a stately $140,000 price tag. For many, though, getting the world’s greatest sleep every night is worth the price. “My first night in the new Vividus was like rediscovering sleep, which was profound even for me—someone who has grown up with Hästens in my DNA,” says Ryde. “It’s the finest bed we’ve ever made.” hastens.com

WHITE WEDDING PICTURE-PERFECT ASPEN AMPS UP WINTER WEDDINGS WITH FIVE-STAR AMENITIES AND MEMORABLE HEIGHTS.
Love among the aspens: A bride walks down Meadows Road on the way to Aspen Meadows Resort, a favorite location for winter weddings in town.
152 ASPENPEAK-MAGAZINE.COM
Aspen weddings hold a lot of love. First, there’s the couple bonding in marriage; second, the adoration they have for this high-altitude haven. The goal, with guests, is to celebrate both. “The bride and groom are excited, and they want to share Aspen with their friends and family,” says Melina Glavas, senior events manager for the five-star hotel The Little Nell (675 E. Durant Ave., 970-9204600; thelittlenell.com). When couples choose the Roaring Fork Valley for their destination wedding, they often add local touches and only-in-Aspen experiences to show off town. For weddings at the Nell, that could mean rides up Aspen Mountain’s Silver Queen Gondola (just steps from the hotel); caviar-andChampagne parties at the Nell’s on-mountain pop-up bar, Oasis; or private wine tastings or cocktail classes with the property’s master sommeliers. Whether couples opt for a simple, more traditional affair or something more elaborate, there are now high-tech ways to ensure the event goes smoothly, according to Elizabeth Slossberg, owner of the event-planning company EKS Events (100 Obermeyer Pl., Stes. 106 & 107, 970-429-4187; eksevents.com). “We’re developing apps for all of our weddings,” she says. “It’s moving away from websites and more towards interactive [platforms].” That way guests can get real-time updates— and carry the event schedule right in their pockets.

Because we love Colorado… because I was an Aspen kid.
Although photos are the standard way to preserve wedding memories, both Slossberg and Glavas say many couples now prefer to give their guests souvenirs—but not just any old tchotchkes. They’re branding everything with the wedding’s signature or hashtag, then sending guests home with items they can use: water bottles, tote bags, even spirits, like a branded bottle of whiskey from the valley’s Woody Creek Distillers. (The hangovers, sadly, come unbranded.) Of course, one of the most memorable parts of a wedding in Aspen is the setting itself, and some couples are taking full advantage of the scenery by holding their ceremonies atop 11,212-foot Aspen Mountain. Both the Nell and EKS Events orchestrate weddings on the summit, transporting guests by gondola to an unforgettable event amidst the breathtaking views of the Elk Mountains. Closer to sea level, the sprawling Aspen Meadows Resort (845 Meadows Road, 970-925-4240; aspenmeadows.com) opens for weddings starting in the fall, and organizers say the emphasis here is definitely on the scenery, with the Aspen Highlands and beyond providing an unbeatable backdrop for ceremonies. But the property is also home to exquisite Herbert Bayer-designed buildings and guest rooms, giving couples the flexibility to shift between the great outdoors and the Bauhaus-inspired interiors. It practically guarantees a plethora of social media-worthy moments— before and after the focus shifts to the event’s true purpose: marriage!

FOR HIS DEVELOPMENTS AROUND TOWN, REAL ESTATE ENTREPRENEUR MICHAEL RUDIN TAKES HIS CUES FROM HIS ASPEN HOME. BY AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY
Michael and Sabrina Rudin know how Aspen can pull at the heartstrings. Like many, they began visiting town as children with their parents. After college, each moved to Aspen, in 2008, to spend just one winter. They finally met, after that ski season, when Michael was making his name in real
estate development—the family business back in Manhattan, his hometown— with his firm, Rudin West Development. It was four years later, atop his first commercial project, a new mixed-use construction at the corner of Spring and Hopkins, that he and Sabrina would start the rest of their
lives together. Having leased the first two floors, Michael planned to sell the three-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot penthouse—that is, before he proposed to Sabrina on the rooftop on a bright spring day, in 2012, against the beautiful views of Aspen Mountain. “Once you
propose on a rooftop,” says Sabrina, “you can’t just give up that rooftop.” The Spring Building, as the development became known, turned into home. (It also turned into business—Sabrina, a budding vegetarian restaurateur, partnered with chef Blanca Salas to open the beloved

Mountain metropolitan (clockwise from above): The dichotomy between modern design and rugged materials helps establish Michael and Sabrina Rudin’s city-country aesthetic; neutral walls allow a budding art collection to shine; says Sabrina, “I put my foot down” with the open kitchen design, which features light oak cabinets and marble counters.
Spring Café on the ground floor.) While Michael worked with David Johnston Architects on the building and with Connect One Design on the rooftop garden, Sabrina—with Michael’s uncle, Alex Papachristidis, a celebrated Manhattan interior designer— researched paints, flooring, and eco-friendly furniture for the penthouse. Mixing contemporary and traditional designs with inspiration from both the big city and mountains, the Rudins and Papachristidis swathed the home in rich fabrics, like Cowtan & Tout velvet and Schumacher Darya ikat, and midcentury antiques from New York’s Duane Modern. The walls
remained neutral, painted white or covered in grass papers, to allow the Rudins’ emerging art collection, including photographs by Peter Lik and Scott Rudin (no relation), to shine. This New York-meets-Aspen aesthetic can also be found at Michael’s latest mixed-use project—Hotel Jerome Residences at The Mill (the millaspen.com), located behind the hotel and comprising two floors of commercial space paired with two more of four spectacular penthouses (from $6 million). The overall design, a collaboration between Aspen’s own David Johnston Architects, New York architect Alan Orenbuch, and Papachristidis, introduces a distinctly urban feel
into Aspen’s residential market. Outside, half of the building’s fa ade is a nod to town’s architectural history, with sandstone touches and brickwork, while the other half reflects a more contemporary style, with floor-to-ceiling windows. Inside, the apartments emanate a bright, neutral air with white oak flooring and Calacatta Gold marble—a look inspired by the real-life example of Michael and Sabrina’s citymeets-mountain-town abode. “The penthouse is our first home together,” says Michael. “It’s a very special spot. It represents a lot in our lives.” Judging by The Mill, it may also represent some of Aspen’s residential future.

Aspen has long been a leader in the environmental world, but this year town got the chance to measure up against other green crusaders in an effort to win the Georgetown University Energy Prize. While the victor will be announced in December (Aspen is currently in third place), the numbers show that town is already winning when it comes to energy savings.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, SKI! EMERGING ASPEN DIRECTOR JESSE JAMES HOFFMAN POINTS HIS LENS AT COLORADO’S MOST BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS—AND THEIR MOST GRACEFUL SKIERS.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSE JAMES HOFFMAN
BY TESS WEAVER STROKES
When 25-year-old Aspenite Jesse James Hoffman scored a coveted last-minute spot in REDirect Explore, a prestigious adventure-film contest organized by the camera company RED Digital Cinema, he was an underdog up against big-name outdoors cinematographers. Along with coproducer and mentor Chris Davenport, Hoffman spent two months last spring clambering through 13,000-foot couloirs with a 50-pound camera pack to shoot, and later edit, his first film, which examines
the art of backcountry skiing. The Process, shot entirely in the Elk Mountains and featuring only local skiers, took second place in the competition, earning Hoffman a $10,000 camera and a reputation as one of the ski-film industry’s finest up-andcoming directors. Here he speaks about the experience, his future, and his Roaring Fork Valley roots.

“LOOKING AT THESE MOUNTAINS UNDER A MICROSCOPE—TRYING TO CATCH EVERY GLIMMERING SNOWFLAKE—REASSURED MY PASSION FOR WHERE I LIVE.”
What was the inspiration for The Process? We didn’t want to make a film about a professional skier or a destination. The ski-film industry is shifting; people are getting tired of watching ski porn. We focused on making something soulful that the everyday skier could relate to. Why did you decide to shoot exclusively in the Elk Mountains? With a two-month window, we didn’t have time to plan an expedition. Plus, our favorite mountains are in our backyard. There is

plenty of adventure to be had right here. Looking at these mountains under a microscope—trying to catch every glimmering snowflake—reassured my passion for where I live. Do you prefer shooting stills or video? I’ve always been more interested in photography, but now it’s shifting toward video, which can be more gratifying. You see hundreds of photos every day, so the power of a photograph, in a sense, is sort of dying. You can tell a story more vividly [through video].
How did growing up in Aspen foster your photography? Nature-based outdoors education contributes to an extreme appreciation for your surroundings and being a steward of the land. I ski-raced growing up, so I had been on the other side of the lens as an athlete. It occurred to me that I wanted to create the image more than be the image. I landed my first cover [Ski magazine] when I was 23 and started getting images published. Freelance photography is a hustle, but those who work
in the outdoors industry aren’t doing it for the money. People do their best work when they do what makes them happy—being outside shooting makes me happy. What’s next? There are a few ideas growing for personal projects, so it will be exciting to see where those go. Beyond that, I’m just going with the flow. I’ve found that taking opportunities when they present themselves and letting things happen usually works out for the best. jessejameshoffman.com

RIDE THE SKY ASPEN’S ABOVE-MOUNTAIN ACTIVITIES TAKE FLIGHT.
Elevate! Tandem paragliding is one of several airborne winter sports giving Aspenites a bird’s-eye view of the mountains.
168 ASPENPEAK-MAGAZINE.COM
Aspen is one of the few resorts in the country that allow flight junkies airtime above town. For novice kicks, try Aspen Paragliding’s (aspen paragliding.com) introductory tandem flights, in which a student passenger and a tandem pilot certified by the USHPA (US Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association) launch off the mountain.
You can sometimes gain several thousand feet in elevation before landing, up to 45 minutes later. Still, since it became the first ski area in the country to allow paragliding (in 1991), the ways to catch air in Aspen have certainly multiplied. Speed-riding, a newer sport, combines paragliding with skiing. The wing—a kind of
paragliding/skydiving hybrid—allows skiers to launch and land on snow multiple times before the final, high-speed landing on skis. “[It’s as if] you have this jet pack that you can engage whenever you want to leave the ground,” says Miller Sports owner and speed-rider Ted Davenport. “If you’re coming to a cliff or rock or variable terrain, you can
take off within a second.” Even more extreme— and dangerous—is wingsuit BASE jumping: With the help of a nylon suit creating lift, Davenport, an 11-year veteran of the sport, can fly at speeds of up to 140 mph before deploying his parachute and floating gently to the ground. A lot of adrenaline for a little bit of air!

SPORT HI-TECH Toy tools: The lastest techy gear has come to define the on-mountain experience—this winter, that means (CLOCKWISE FROM BELOW) the ultra-light Oakley Mod 5 helmet ($200); waterproof GoPro Hero5 Black camera ($399); and Smith’s I/O goggles featuring the brand’s ultra-vivid ChromaPop lens technology ($180).
GET IN GEAR! UPGRADE YOUR EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS YOUR GAME WITH THIS SNOW SEASON’S TOP THREE MUST-HAVES.
Being on-mountain is about being one with nature, but skiers and snowboarders now thrill as much at tech advances as at newfound couloirs. Crystal clear vision, lighter-than-air protection, voicecontrolled recording: Here are this snow season’s best tech upgrades.
MUST-HAVE #2: OAKLEY MOD 5 HELMET
All mountain-goers know Oakley goggles, but this winter marks the company’s first foray into the helmet market. The Mod 5 is designed to work seamlessly with Oakley goggles for both perfect fit and ventilation.
Equipped with industry-leading MIPS technology, it’s also designed for maximum protection. Plus, like all Oakley wares, it looks good while doing it. All items are available at Aspen Sports, 408 E. Cooper Ave., 970925-6331; aspensports.com
MUST-HAVE #1: SMITH CHROMAPOP GOGGLE LENSES
The human eye, you may not know, blurs blue, green, and red wavelengths when they cross one another in our visual spectrum. Enter Smith’s ChromaPop, a patented lens design that separates the hues to create clearer and more colorful visuals. While the technology is already integrated into the eyewear company’s sunglasses, this winter marks its goggle debut.
MUST-HAVE #3: GOPRO HERO 5
The micro-camera that can do it all just keeps getting better: The newest GoPro, the Hero 5, is voice activated and comes with a remote control. That means no more fumbling around to press record in the cold—just say the command and all those glorious powder turns will live on in infamy. Plus, its two-inch display puts on-site editing in the palm of your hand.

ASPEN INSPIRED…
MOUNTAIN HOME TYPICAL OF ASPEN’S INSTITUTIONS, THE RECENTLY COMPLETED BUCKSBAUM CAMPUS INTEGRATES—INTO TOWN, THE MOUNTAINS, THE ASPEN SENSIBILITY. BY ALI MARGO
On a crisp afternoon, the squeals of middle-schoolers kicking a ball outside Hurst Hall echo throughout Aspen’s Mathew and Carolyn Bucksbaum Campus. The waning light sparkles off the pond where three canoes are lined up on the shore. A waterfall rolling from the roof of the cantilevered Harry Teague Pavilion evokes a sense of calm. It’s like a scene come to life from the pages of an Eddie Bauer catalog. But this is real life for Aspen Country Day
184 ASPENPEAK-MAGAZINE.COM
School students, and who can blame them for the impulse to frolic in their idyllic setting—the newly completed, Harry Teague– designed, eight-years-inthe-making, all-kinds-ofawards-winning, $75 million Bucksbaum Campus? Nestled between the steep wooded hillsides and the burbling sounds of Castle Creek, with snowcapped peaks in the distance, it begs for an “only in Aspen” hashtag. The facility is used by the renowned Aspen Music
Festival and School in the summer and as a private day school for pre-K through eighth grade during the school year. The final phase of the campus’s long-awaited face-lift was completed last spring and includes four new buildings that had to address numerous challenges: a building footprint wedged on the floor of a narrow river valley beneath a steep mountainside; a natural setting that demanded a high standard for design that would enhance and
not detract from the site; and a dual-use campus that had to accommodate the needs of two very different types of students—aspiring young musicians and Aspen’s schoolchildren. What resulted is a living work of art: Buildings, while modern, integrate the mountain surroundings with details like earth-toned fibrous cement designed to look like wood, angular lines reminiscent of craggy peaks, and a mix of striated material intended to reflect the surrounding layers of
rock. Facilities, while built for the technical acoustics of classical musicians, also accommodate learning and exploration in children. It’s hard to believe that so many elements—music, culture, nature, architecture, art, education, growth—can occur both inside and outside these walls. But that’s precisely where the Aspen Idea of balancing mind, body, and spirit continues to thrive— and where it continues to be taught to Aspen’s future generations.
