IF THIS BAR COULD TALK FOR 140 YEARS, IT SERVED THE GREATS OF NEW YORK, BUT NOW THE BAR FROM THE LEGENDARY CEDAR TAVERN HOLDS COURT AT AUSTIN’S NEW EBERLY.

You know at first glance that this majestic bar at the Eberly’s new Cedar Tavern—named for its original home in New York-—has a storied history. And what stories they are. The dark mahogany bar served the counterculture of ’50s and ’60s New York: Jack Kerouac, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Jackson

Pollack. But its history goes back yet another century, to 1866, when woodworkers carved it out of mahogany shipped from Honduras, the same wood used by the British and Spanish for boats, furniture, and palaces. It was wood meant to last. During its legendary, 140-year run, the Cedar

Tavern attracted devoted regulars. Among those in the early 1990s were Stubb’s Bar-B-Q co-founders John Scott and Eddy Patterson, along with Bobby Patterson, Eddy’s artist brother (and a Pollack fan). They later settled in Austin, but Bobby died in 2004. After Bobby’s friend Tom Maitland told Scott and

Patterson about the Cedar Tavern’s closing in 2006, they tracked down the bar in a basement, bought it, and moved it in more than 100 pieces to Central Texas. A master carpenter put it back together with the help of only two photos. “It was like the ultimate jigsaw puzzle,” says Maitland, now Eberly’s operations

manager and resident historian. The bar, with its stunning Tiffany windows, gargoyles, rosettes, and one-way mirror, now sits like a shrine in a tiled, airy space. Says Maitland: “It was all about showcasing the beauty of this historic bar.” 615 S. Lamar Blvd., 512-9169000; eberlyaustin.com

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Built in 1866, this historic bar is now treated like a shrine at the Cedar Tavern at Austin’s new Eberly restaurant and event space on South Lamar Boulevard; in the ‘60s, the Cedar Tavern attracted counterculture heroes like Bob Dylan; bartenders Ryan Foster and Jim Ross.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

My friends and family know the drill when we’re eating: They don’t dare touch the food or drink until I’ve whipped out my iPhone and snapped a pic. My patient husband now instinctively knows to move condiments out of the frame and to bring the flowers closer. Even my 10-year-old understands how we dine in the Insta-age: “Foodies are people who take pictures of their food. I don’t think they have to eat it.”

18  AUSTINWAY.COM

Although I’m a writer and a word editor, I love the thrill of telling visual stories about how we live. It’s such a simple way (depending on your filter skills) to communicate, but it can be incredibly inspiring in the hands of people who know what they’re doing. For this Winter issue, we selected five Austin Instagrammers whose photography goes to the next level. Scrolling through their feeds, I am amazed by how they can make me see something familiar in a whole new light. Learn more about them starting on page 76, including their tips and favorite places across the city. Another art form we use to elevate our daily lives is music, of course. I was lucky enough a few weeks ago to attend the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, with Willie Nelson performing for each honoree. Like all good Austinites, I get chills every time I see him. Once again, our favorite stranger will ring in the new year with three shows at ACL Live—we give you five other reasons to go on page 35. Before we welcome the new year, we’ll have the chance to say goodbye to late music greats, including some of

2016’s biggest losses. Austin musicians will share music and stories about the legends they worked with, including Charlie Sexton on David Bowie and Redd Volkaert on Merle Haggard, in an evening called “True Stories, Sordid Confessions & Music from the Heart of the City” to benefit the SIMS Foundation, which helps local musicians with mental health and recovery. To learn more about this only-in-Austin event, directed by Adrian Quesada (whose Grupo Fantasma played with Prince), see our Charity Register on page 128 and check out my online-only interview with Sexton on Austinway.com. Whether it’s through Instagram, music, or more traditional formats, Austin embraces and inspires storytelling. Make sure to follow Austin Way’s story on Instagram @austinwaymag, and keep up with fresh, online-only stories—including extra tips from our cover story Instagrammers—on Austinway.com.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

This is a particularly special issue of Austin Way because it marks the completion of our second full year of publishing in Austin. There are so many supporters to thank for a great second year. Specifically, we are grateful to a number of partners who stepped up as sponsors for some of our magazine’s most dynamic events, including: the grand re-opening of Antone’s way back in February with my friend Will Bridges; our star-studded Women of Power dinner at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum in April with executive director Nina Seely; Austin Way’s Art of the City summer event featuring Jennifer Chenoweth and co-sponsored by HEB and the University of Texas College of Fine Arts; our Fall Fashion Drivers of Style runway show with Chris Hendel at Neiman Marcus and Vicki Roberts and Cassie LaMere at Lexus of Austin & Lakeway; and, most recently, the Austin Way Formula One Mansion party at the brand-new Eberly, sponsored by Broadway Bank and Kristi Lee at Sprezza Custom Menswear. A special thank you goes out to all of these partners for recognizing the value of these experiences and helping us

make these amazing events happen. This is also the perfect issue to include our first major feature on health care and highlight how Austin is leading the way in medical innovations. From breakthroughs in tattoo removal and Dr. Bruce A. Levy’s state-of-the-art HyGIeaCare colonoscopy prep to innovations in skincare at Westlake Dermatology and the technology used by Dr. Michael Moossy in cosmetic dentistry, our healthcare evolution is yet another reason to be proud to live in this great city. There are many things in Austin that add to the quality of life here, but knowing that we are the hub of so many important breakthroughs in medical technology—and are now home to the new the new UT Dell Medical School--is certainly something to be thankful for. Happy holidays, everyone, and we look forward to sharing an exciting 2017.

AULD LANG WILLIE 5 REASONS (BESIDES THE OBVIOUS) WHY YOU CAN’T MISS THE ANNUAL NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATION WITH AUSTIN’S FAVORITE RESIDENT AT ACL LIVE. BY KATHY BLACKWELL

In what’s become an Austin tradition, Willie Nelson is once again playing his annual New Year’s shows, bringing three nights of music and only-in-Austin revelry to ACL Live. But if that’s not enough to persuade you to snap up tickets, here are five other reasons – in no particular order – to belt out “Auld Lang Syne” along with Austin’s favorite son. (Not in town over the holiday? You can watch Willie ring in the new year with legends including Bonnie Raitt and Kris Kristofferson on a special episode of the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, which KLRU and other PBS stations will broadcast across the country New Year’s Eve.)

1. FATHER TIME’S GRAND ENTRANCE

Recalling the New Year’s Eve shows by the Grateful Dead in which legendary promoter Bill Graham played Father Time, Tim Fischer (husband to Colleen Fischer, ACL Live’s general manager and director of booking) has taken on the Father Time role for every Willie NYE show.

Whiskey River: Willie Nelson will once again ring in the new year with three nights at ACL Live.

SCENE HOTTEST TICKET

Inspired by Graham’s midnight entrances – he once came in on a giant joint – Fischer has descended on the stage on everything from a longhorn skull to an armadillo. How will he enter this year? “I can’t reveal how I’m arriving … but it will be death-defying,” Fischer promises. 2. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SISTER BOBBIE!

January 1 is the birthday of one Bobbie Nelson, Willie’s beloved piano-playing sister. To celebrate, her brother goes right from “Auld Lang Syne” into “Happy Birthday” as they bring out a cake, says Austin media personality Andy Langer, who emcees the show every year. 3. VERY SPECIAL GUESTS

You never know who will show up on stage to perform (or play Baby New Year), although ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons is a regular. Says Langer: “Willie on New

36  AUSTINWAY.COM

Year’s, home in Austin, with a Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer-—and one of the most immediately identifiable Texas musicians ever-—sitting in on guitar? That’s special, even if it happens almost every year.” 4. THE BEST SONG EVER

SIBLING REVELRY! THE SUPERCOOL SISTERS BEHIND THE BRILLIANT AUSTIN COCKTAILS GET INTO THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT.

Sister Act: Jill Burns and Kelly Gasin k started Austin Cocktails as a way to simplify happy hour. top right: Fred’s Ruby Red, named after their grandfather, combines vodka, grapefruit, lime, mint, and agave.

Throwing a memorable holiday party doesn’t mean you have to work Santa-like hours. Just ask Jill Burns and Kelly Gasink, the sister entrepreneur team behind this season’s coolest line of specialty craft beverages, Austin Cocktails. Their bottled cocktails were inspired by a summertime tradition Burns and Gasnik remember fondly from childhood. At 5:30 every

night, their grandfather Fred, a farmer, would drop everything and gather his family for what he liked to call Cocktail Time. “It’s the backdrop for all of our most beautiful memories,” says Gasink, remembering how aunts, uncles, and cousins (sipping Shirley Temples) would unite to enjoy the good things in life. Thirty-plus years later, Burns and Gasink decided to bottle their grandfather’s

inspiration and founded Austin Cocktails. “We’re trying to make a really beautiful craft cocktail as easy as nice wine or beer,” says Burns. “We build everything out with natural ingredients sourced from all over the world.” These cocktails come in five distinct varieties, including Cucumber Vodka Mojito, Bergamot Orange Margarita, and the festive Fred’s Ruby Red—a mix

of vodka, grapefruit, lime, mint, and agave that will look fabulous under the mistletoe. “Our idea really is to simplify entertaining,” explains Burns. And when wowing your guests with a perfectly mixed drink is as easy as twisting a bottle cap, you’ve got lots more time to enjoy your own party. After months of renovations, The Contemporary Austin’s Jones Center is ready to reach its full potential. The downtown museum will reopen on November 22 with Habitat, the largest US solo exhibition by Polish artist Monika Sosnowska and a symbol of what’s to come at the renovated space. Designed by Paul Lewis, the same architect who oversaw the original renovation in 2010, the expansion has increased gallery space to 7,000 square feet, along with other significant improvements to the museum’s infrastructure, including invisible but important details like the addition of a formalized HVAC system and a scissor lift that allows large-scale art to be transported to the second floor in one piece. Being able to control the humidity and handle large-scale pieces gives the Jones Center access to top-notch art. “The improvements empower us to say yes to great things being offered,” explains museum Executive Director and CEO Louis Grachos. Some of the major changes will be front and center. The museum’s roof will feature a stunning 21-foot open-air canopy, allowing for the popular space, overlooking iconic Congress Avenue, to host many more events. Also, beginning in December, artist Jim Hodges’s large-scale, outdoor structure “With Liberty and Justice For All (A Work in

Jim Hodges’ “With Liberty and Justice for All (A Work in Progress),” shown wrapped around the bottom of the Aspen Art Museum in 2014, will soon be installed at Austin’s Jones Center, only this time it will hang more than 50 feet above ground.

Progress)” will extend across the roofline. Seven-foot-high letters coated in iridescent dichroic film will be lit at night from within, spelling out the powerful message “With Liberty and Justice For All.” The letters, installed 51 feet above ground over Congress and Seventh Street, will appear to shift colors when the light changes or depending on where a viewer is standing, creating an interactive experience for those down below. Says senior curator Heather Pesanti: “The space will be conducive to more complex and expansive ideas within the entirety of the Jones Center.” Sosnowska’s work, for example, is large and structural, inspired by Soviet-era architecture of 1960s and 1970s Warsaw. It plays with the viewer’s perception of structure and material, twisting and distorting impressions of simple elements such as rails and beams. The two-floor exhibit would have been nearly impossible to pull off at the Jones Center pre-renovation. As for the powerful Hodges piece, the Jones Center plans to engage Austin on all levels with this exhibit, including through community discussions with adults and school-age children. Says Grachos: “[Hodges] has always told me [that] execution of work itself is half the job. The other half is really providing the platform and the arena for the conversation to happen afterwards. Part of that deal is that we engage our community.” 700 Congress Ave., 512-453-5312; thecontempo raryaustin.org

THE VOICE LEGENDARY TENOR ANDREA BOCELLI—WITH GUEST STAR ATHARINE MCPHEE— SERENADES AUSTIN THIS SEASON.

“KATHARINE MCPHEE IS AN EXTRAORDINARY AND ECLECTIC TALENT.” —andrea bocelli

BY HANNAH SHIH

The best-selling classical solo artist of all time, Italian singer Andrea Bocelli has enchanted international audiences, from popes to presidents. The 58-year-old tenor chose Austin as one of seven stops in a special concert series featuring arias, crossover hits, and selections from his 15th studio album, Cinema, which includes songs from legendary films. Austin Way spoke with the famous tenor about the show, which will feature duets with special guest Katharine McPhee. ON CINEMA: After studying classic film songs, he built his own interpretation of each “so as to not betray the songs, but to restore their freshness through new orchestrations.” TRANSLATION: Bocelli, who freely

shifts between five languages, gravitates toward the one that has the “different expressive nuances and musicality” that fits the arrangement of a particular song. DREAM DUET: “Katharine McPhee is an extraordinary and eclectic talent, a force of nature with exceptional vocal and acting skills,” he says.

ART-A’DILLO

Austin is rapidly changing with each passing year, but for 11 days each December, there’s a place we can go that reminds us of why we’ll never leave. Now in its 41st year, the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, December 14-24 at the Palmer Events Center, is a down-home market that celebrates not only the holidays, but the spirit of the city itself. This year’s music roster includes Grammy winners and local legends, from Marcia Ball and Asleep at The Wheel to Jimmy LaFave and Dale Watson. Add dozens of art, jewelry, and food vendors, and you have yourself a beloved Austin tradition. “When I think about the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, I think about family, connection to Austin, music, art and self-expression,” says Terra Firma Studios artist Aly Winningham, who was commissioned this year by the festival to create a piece of art inspired by the spirit of the armadillo. Her piece, aptly titled “Home” in bold black tiles, captures Austin in a colorful mosaic of symbols near and dear, from a guitar and piano keys to our favorite armored animal. The mosaic will be up for bid through a silent auction at the Armadillo from December 14–23, with 10 percent of the proceeds going to Texas CASA, which helps children entering the foster system. 900 Barton Springs Road; armadillobazaar.com

“Home” by Aly Winningham will be on display at Wild About Music, 615 Congress Ave., until it moves to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar on December 14. Bidding starts at $1,500.

BY BETSY F. PERRY

While many fashion houses come and go or change direction with each new in-house designer, Escada is approaching the grand age of 40 without losing sight of what makes it special in the eyes of its faithful followers, while simultaneously offering “classic cool” to seduce younger fans. “In fashion, reaching 40 years is a great accomplishment,” says Escada’s fashion director, Daniel Wingate, of the label’s upcoming milestone. “It’s an honor that so many women still love the brand and turn to Escada to make them feel beautiful.” With that in mind, Escada has created a bright, vivacious resort collection laced with modern elements that translates the brand’s heritage for today’s woman. Wingate turned to David Hockney’s celebrated pool paintings—those modernist emblems of 1960s California cool—for his initial inspiration. Describing the collection as a “wink to the bygone era of famous swans like Babe Paley and Jackie Kennedy and the glamorous days of Hollywood,” he embraced super-fresh colors with names like Melrose pink and Mimosa yellow, along with shades of blue (a particular obsession in Hockney’s

here and right: Daniel Wingate, a 14-year veteran of Escada who has been fashion director since 2013, inflected the 2017 resort collection with mod touches, such as blacks and whites and pencil pants. below: The color-blocked ML40 bag ($1,295).

aquatic series). Key pieces include pencil-striped coats with matching dresses and cigarette pants worn with fortune cookie-shaped tops tied at the waist with karate-style belts. Wingate’s other inspiration, of course, is the “Escadettes”—the designer’s name for his loyal clients— who look to the brand to expand their wardrobes as they prepare to winter in toasty, sun-filled resorts. “They’re adding some wonderfully feminine but simple shapes in vivid, fresh colors, the head-to-toe tonal ones and the white and black grouping, along with the striped pieces that bring in all colors of the collection,” he says. “It’s also time to be more playful with your clothes.” To that end, he encourages his clientele to try a jumpsuit, belt the waist over a coat, and even experiment with a top worn back to front. The collection, which makes stylish dressing practically foolproof, also borrows from the past—specifically, the custom-made mint cowl-neck gown that Kim Basinger wore when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for L.A. Confidential in 1998. Wingate has adopted the flattering neckline for a Mimosa yellow dress as well as for hip-length, waist-skimming tops with deep backs that can be worn with conservative white slacks or chic anklelength pencil pants. And peeking out from both pants and dresses are metallic slides in silver, gold, or bronze that Wingate calls “Frank Gehry build ings for the foot.” Although accessories are minimal, Escada has introduced its chic new ML40 handbag—available in eye-popping colors—to commemorate the company’s upcoming 40th birthday and recognize Escada’s founder, Margaretha Ley. While the 2017 resort collection has pieces reminiscent of a more unhurried age, when women seemed to have all the time in the world to get themselves together, it’s still as modern and polished as the woman who wears it today—one who needs to keep it stylish but without overthinking her wardrobe. For Wingate, it amounts to a simple design credo: “Be relevant.” Saks Fifth Avenue, North Star Mall, San Antonio, 210-341-4111; us.escada.com

The much larger space at Kick Pleat’s new home is the ideal gallery-like showcase for the impeccable selections by owner Wendi Martin (right).

It was 13 years in the making. Located in the one of the most visible corners of the city – right there among local icons Waterloo Records, Book People, and the Whole Foods flagship—is the airy, gallery-like new home of Wendi Martin’s Kick Pleat boutique. With 5,000 square feet, more than triple Kick Pleat’s

former space six blocks up, Martin finally has the store she envisioned when she first opened her fashion-forward shop in a South First bungalow in 2003. Not only does the store’s design by architect Jamie Chioco artfully showcase Martin’s intelligent, modern lines like Dusan, Nehera, Issey Miyake, Veronique

Leroy, and Jil Sander, but it has office space for Kick Pleat’s bustling online operations. “We were growing and growing, but our space remained the same size,” recalls Martin, who opened her first store outside of Austin, also designed by Chioco, this summer in Houston’s River Oaks district. A

true visionary who has developed a fiercely devoted clientele, Martin says she has always stayed true to “quality, timelessness, and comfort” when selecting pieces for Kick Pleat. “I don’t want to go for the trend; I want to go for the item you will love forever.” 624 N. Warby Parker’s South Congress shop carved out space for a dedicated writing center to be used by the ABC, which each year publishes an anthology of its students’ work (the books are on sale at the store). The sleek new boutique is designed to look like a library, making for an authentic collaboration. Says ABC’s outgoing Executive Director Katie Haab: “It feels like a very wonderful romance.”

Both new stores feature a photo booth, a bonus exclusive to Austin. The city has been an ideal partner for Warby Parker’s quirky aesthetic since its retail trailer (the Class Trip Bus) came to town in 2014, says co-CEO Dave Gilboa. “[We] knew then that we’d be missing out if we didn’t set up shop more permanently in this unique city,” he adds. 1317 S. LET’S HAVE A PARADE! MACY’S CELEBRATES ITS 90TH THANKSGIVING DAY SPECTACLE WITH A FANCY RIZZOLI TOME AND IN-STORE EVENTS FROM COAST TO COAST. BY JILL SIERACKI

When the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade makes its way down New York’s Central Park West and Sixth Avenue on November 24, the celebration is set to be even more exuberant than usual to mark the 90th edition this year. “We like to make sure nothing is duplicated— we’re giving people a full breadth of entertainment from the moment the turkey crosses the starting line to the time Santa

officially rings in the holiday season,” says Amy Kule, executive producer and parade official. The parade reaches 50 million viewers with its nationally televised NBC broadcast, and 3.5 million line the streets in New York to witness it live. As part of this year’s milestone, Rizzoli has introduced the coffee-table book Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York City Holiday Tradition, which captures

the history and scope of the spectacle and features a foreword by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and afterword by Macy’s Chairman and CEO Terry J. Lundgren. “The parade’s halo effect becomes a tangible reality for shoppers at their local Macy’s store and macys.com,” says Lundgren. “They expect the parade’s perfectly choreographed execution to translate into a seamless shopping experience.”

Across the country, in-store celebratory events and products will be unveiled— and a new app even allows users to create their own Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “This is a milestone for Macy’s, but I think it’s a milestone for every fan we have across the country,” says Kule. “This is not a New York parade; this is America’s parade.” Barton Creek Square, 512-2392300; The Domain, 490-3300; macys.com

SAVING FACE A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TREATMENT MAKES THE DREADED DOUBLE CHIN A THING OF THE PAST.

A recent survey by the American Society for Dermatological Surgery revealed that nearly 67 percent of us are as bothered by double chins as we are by lines and wrinkles around the eyes. But while there are several options for smoothing out the crinkles, a quick fix for a shimmying chin has always proved elusive—until now. Beauty-minded pharma company Kythera Biopharmaceuticals has debuted Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment for that under-the-chin wobble—or, in medical terms, submental fat. Utilizing precise injections of deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells, Kybella, which enjoyed phenomenal success during clinical trials, has emerged as something of a miracle fix—for the appropriate patients, of course. “It’s a great product in the right circumstance, but the patient selection has to be correct,” says Dr. Stephen C. Adler, a Miami-based facial plastic surgeon. “It’s best in younger patients between 30 and 45 [who have] some fullness under the chin but otherwise good skin texture and tension.” Viva Day Spa’s new location at Domain Northside (512-300-2256; vivadayspa.com), which includes Kybella in its med-spa menu, recommends two to three Kybella sessions a month apart. Raves co-owner Shannon Mouser: “It’s a fantastic solution for men and women who are looking for an improved chin profile. Best of all, the results are permanent.” Treatment programs start at $1,100; mykybella.com

They snap, we follow: Go behind the feeds of our city’s buzziest social media all-stars. by KATHY BLACKWELL

WE CAN’T CLICK ON THOSE HEARTS fast enough. When Austin’s creative energy is funneled through the Instagram feeds of visual visionaries, magic happens. We look to them to see the best of our city through their filters. Here are four of our favorite ‘Grammers who have attracted legions of fans with their unique takes on fashion and food, music and design. Wherever they go, we follow. JACKIE LEE YOUNG | MUSIC, FASHION, PORTRAITURE @jackieleeyoung

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF @JACKIELEEYOUNG

Even the photos Jackie Lee Young takes here in Austin have a far-away feel on her Instagram feed, undoubtedly influenced by her upbringing overseas, where she traveled extensively with her family, a disposable camera in hand. Profoundly influenced by a Seydou Keita book of portraits given to her by a professor at St. Edward’s University, Young started focusing on fashion editorials in 2014. Now the social media manager of Bunkhouse Group, which manages hotels like the San Jose and Saint Cecilia, Young was drawn to Instagram instantly. Her following exploded when Instagram featured her early on, but the reaction to her edgy, ‘70s-soaked images wasn’t all hearts. “People were yelling at me through comments saying nasty things … but I never tried to change my style,” recalls Young, who now boasts 87,000-plus followers. She has spent much of the year focusing on music photography: “The New York Times found me via IG, and I’ve worked with them through the platform as well as a surprising music branch of a career as well.”

clockwise from top left: Jackie Lee Young’s selfportrait at Austin restaurant Launderette; James Turrell’s Skyspace, “The Color Inside,” shot during a thunderstorm; her best friend, Andrew, visiting Austin from Brooklyn;

her friend Alec Friedman wearing one of his many robes at his Marfa home in front of artwork by Marfa’s Sam Schonzeit; a car decked out with giant wheels at the old Highland Mall shot during the Texas Relays.

Favorite photogenic spot: The James Turrell Skyspace installation, “The Color Inside,” at UT at sunset. Everyone must go and lie on the ground and sit through the sequence. Prime people watching: Tillery Street Plant Company. Everyone loves plants, so you’re getting a variety of people at that place. On weekends you’ll find me: at Hotel San Jose. Not only is it beautiful and extremely photogenic, they have amazing workshops there seasonally and a reggae DJ. It rules. Austin holidays aren’t complete without: a trip to the Trail of Lights. Sisters who travel together and eat together naturally must Instagram together. What started on a whim while Lindsay and Morgan Vandygriff were on vacation two years ago, @EatingATX now has more than 33,000 followers who are drawn to the twentysomething sisters’ food adventures. “In no way are we professionals…but we have found a love for getting creative and trying out new ways to make the food look its best,” says Morgan, a full-time finance senior. It comes with a price, though: The pleasure of eating food while it’s still warm is just a memory now, and salads are bypassed for choices like the more Insta-appealing lobster mac and cheese. Adds Lindsay, who works full-time at accounting firm Holtzman Partners: “We take all of our photos with our iPhones. It still is only a hobby for us; the only difference is that now tens of thousands of other people are watching our hobby, which still blows our minds!” Most photogenic restaurant: Elizabeth Street Café--with bright colored walls, pastries, cute furniture, and uhhhhmazing food, it is definitely perfect for the ‘gram. Prime people-watching: The downtown farmers’ market on Saturday morning. Grab a cup of coffee and pastries and watch people haggle over veggie prices. On weekends you’ll find us: at brunch on South Congress. It’s a requirement for all millennials in Austin to brunch on weekends. Favorite bites: kimchi fries at Chi’Lantro BBQ and tacos at Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ. For more on the Vandygriffs’ best of Austin, go to austinway.com

CHARLES REAGAN HACKLEMAN | MUSIC @charles.reagan Charles Reagan Hackleman has always enjoyed looking at life through the viewfinder. As an Austin TV reporter for almost a decade, the UT grad never had trouble getting a photo pass, which he’d use to indulge his hobby. After shooting the Fun Fun Fun Festival in 2012, he decided to take the leap into fulltime photography. “Becoming a full-time freelancer is hard, and will always be hard. You have to find a way to stand out from a very large crowd,” he says. Instagram, which featured him early on, has done much for Hackleman, who remembers his first Insta image as a photo of a “I voted for Obama” pint of beer. “Instagram became my go-to promotional tool,” he recalls. “I was traveling a ton and loved having a virtual gallery to show people.” Now a staff photographer for Lollapalooza and the ACL music festivals, he saw his followers swell after a musician with 2 million followers posted a photo of Hackleman’s with proper credit, which doesn’t always happen.

clockwise from top left: Musician J. Roddy Walston of J. Roddy Walston and The Business performs at the Historic Scoot Inn in April (Hackleman shot this purely as a music fan); Austin band Black

Pistol Fire is a favorite of Hackleman’s because of moments like this stage trust fall; Hackleman managed to get just a few frames of this rainbow over the ACL Music Festival before it faded away.

Favorite photogenic place: Zilker Park during ACL, in a bucket 80 feet in the air, with 30,000 people below you while the sun is setting and the skyline is sparkling. Prime people watching is at: ACL, hands down. I get paid to literally watch people until that perfect moment, which hopefully I captured. On the weekends you’ll find me: on the Greenbelt, or outside of Austin in the Big Bend area. The holidays in Austin aren’t complete without: a fancy hotel bar hop. For more on Hackleman’s best of Austin, go to austinway.com

CHASE DANIEL | DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE @thevuvobandit Favorite photogenic spot: The 360 Bridge overlook (also known as the Pennybacker Bridge). To avoid the sunset crowds, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy a sunrise all to yourself. Prime peoplewatching: South by Southwest has to be one of my favorite times of the year to walk around downtown and just observe. On weekends you’ll find me: with my wife Lauren perusing estate sales, walking around plant nurseries, and going on breakfast dates. The holidays in Austin aren’t complete without: a trip to the Christmas light show at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters! It’s a really cool show played to holiday music--and you can enjoy some warm hot chocolate as you watch. For more on Daniel’s best of Austin, go to austinway.com

While studying architecture at Virginia Tech, Chase Daniel actually fell in love with photography because of Instagram. “What started as driving back roads in Virginia taking pictures with my iPhone has now turned into my favorite hobby and career.” The Dallas native, who now works at Michael Hsu Office of Architecture in Austin, sometimes works with spirit brands and furniture makers, but recently most of his photography clients have been local architects. Through his artful and intelligent Instagram feed, which has more than 43,000 followers, Daniel has met friends and added a whole new layer to his career. “I enjoy combining my passion of photography and architecture by telling well-crafted stories through capturing beautifully designed spaces,” he says. “This all started with a desire to go out and Instagram things.”

AUSTIN’S HI-TECH HEALTH LEADERS

Cracking the code: Austin innovators are using technology and digital advancements to break new ground in health care.

10 WAYS THE CITY IS REVOLUTIONIZING WELLNESS, FROM GENETIC AND FITNESS BREAKTHROUGHS TO SKINCARE AND MENTAL HEALTH ADVANCEMENTS. BY SOFIA SOKOLOVE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALICE-PHOTO

Between top-tier research at the new University of Texas Dell Medical School and ongoing breakthroughs made by the Livestrong Foundation, Austin is undergoing a healthcare revolution. As medicine and wellness become increasingly reliant on technological advancements to move forward, and as Austin becomes an increasingly larger hub for the best minds working in tech, our city is poised like never before to be a leader in medical innovations. We talked to medical experts and healthcare professionals across all fields about the intersection of technology and healthcare in Austin. From allergies to aging, here are 10 ways that our city’s healthcare advancements and willingness to embrace technology are setting a healthy example for the rest of the country. 1. WEARABLE HEALTH: UNDER ARMOUR

In March 2015, Baltimorebased sports apparel giant Under Armour (UA) came to town with the sole purpose

of establishing a technology division, moving into 35,000 square feet at the revitalized Seaholm development. The Connected Fitness division’s first endeavor, a robust piece of technology called UA HealthBox, is being touted by UA as the world’s first connected fitness system and retails for $350. The HealthBox consists of four tools—a band, scale, heart rate chest strap, and an app, UA Record—all designed to give users a full picture of their health. The device is a unique approach, explains a UA spokesperson, because it’s “a system solution, rather than just single devices that live independently.” Underarmour.com/healthbox

enough resources, patients, or clinical trials to do something as simple as select and then optimize a treatment plan for the individual patient.” To treat each patient as an individual, he explains, you have to have a theory that allows you to make predictions. Yankeelov’s team uses incredibly advanced imaging to collect data that more accurately predicts a tumor’s potential size and growth. This process is similar to the one a meteorologist uses to predict the weather. And it can have a major impact on cancer treatment. As he puts it: “If you can predict outcome more accurately, then you can intervene more intelligently.” dellmedschool.utexas.edu

White. “The art of possibility is so amazing today.” That attitude is what Reddy brings to Baylor Scott & White’s digital and innovative approach to health care. The largest nonprofit healthcare system in Texas and one of the largest in the country, Baylor Scott & White uses technology to give patients the highest level of convenience and choices available, offering services such as online booking and video visits. The innovation team is creating Artificial Intelligence platforms that can serve as a resource for doctors, using algorithms to help mine data to make evidencebased decisions about a patient’s health. baylorscottandwhite.com 4. MENTAL HEALTH: DR. CHRIS BEEVERS, UT’S INSTITUTE FOR MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH

Dr. Chris Beevers, director of the Institute for Mental Health Research at UT, is spearheading two projects aimed at improving

the treatment of mental health. The first is a web-based intervention, “similar to a mini-course online,” in which those seeking treatment can learn many of the cognitive behavioral principles shown to be effective in a clinic. The other phase of his research involves creating machine-learning models—essentially offshoots of Artificial Intelligence—to predict who is most likely to respond to the treatment, the idea being that not everyone who participates will respond or get better. Explains Beevers: “If we can identify people from the outset who are especially likely to benefit, we can steer them towards [the web-based intervention] and direct others who might not benefit towards other treatment.” liberalarts.utexas.edu/imhr 5. Working with Dr. Gavriel Meron, Levy, CEO of Austin Gastroenterology and Austin Endoscopy Centers, pioneered a same-day prep procedure featuring a tiny swallowable camera and an FDA-approved machine that allows for pre-colonoscopy cleaning that only takes 40 minutes. “It’s much easier on the patient,” Dr. Levy explains. “They don’t lose sleep; they don’t have to miss work.” 8015 Shoal Creek Blvd., Ste. 111, 512-3688357; hygieacare.com

Going beneath the surface: Clinical trials, research, and technology breakthroughs make this an exciting time in dermatology.

6. GENETICS: SPENCER WELLS

Only in Austin would one of the owners of an iconic music venue—Antone’s—also be one of the world’s leading geneticists. Spencer Wells played a major role in kicking off the consumer genealogy trend (think 23andMe)

as the former director and founder of the Genographic Project at the National Geographic Society. “The first day we launched, we sold 10,000 kits” remembers Wells. While the industry has expanded rapidly, Wells is looking to make genetic testing even more accessible and “take it mainstream” with his new upcoming Austin-based startup, Insitome. Through a partnership with Helix—a company in the process of building “an app store” for genetics—Wells is hoping to help consumers discover information not only about their health in a clinical sense through their genome sequencing, but also learn ways to enrich their overall wellness. insito.me 7. TATTOO REMOVAL: DAVE MCKENZIE, LASER FOCUS

In a city full of tattoo parlors,

Austin is also leading the charge in tattoo removal. Dave McKenzie is a big part of that—he uses the most advanced tattoo removal technology in the world: a PicoSure laser. The laser pulses much more quickly than older technology and uses less heat, meaning it’s more effective—requiring half as many treatment sessions—and less painful. McKenzie has begun using the laser on sunspots as well. “The laser is too darn good to pass up what we can do with it,” explains McKenzie. 6911 Ranch Road 620 N., Ste. B201, 512-551-8418; laserfocustattooremoval.com 8. COLONOSCOPIES: DR. BRUCE LEVY’S HYGIEACARE

“The number one reason people refuse to get colonoscopies,” explains Dr. Bruce Levy, “is prep.” Austin HyGIeaCare Center, which opened in the past year, was designed to change

10. ALLERGIES: DR. RONALD COX

Austin is infamous for its yearround allergy seasons, so allergist Dr. Ronald Cox uses technology to help his patients fight back. His offices are stocked with iPads featuring a program by ContextMedia Health to better inform each patient about their specific treatment. Coming just for an allergy shot? You’ll check-in with the innovative tool Rosche, which identifies who you are and green-lights you into the shot room, helping to increase patient safety. 6611 River Place Blvd., Ste. 305, 937-321-6018; austinallergist.com

dental practice”—there’s no paper. Everything, from charting to X-rays, has been digitalized. “We’re not a clinic,” explains Dr. Moossy of his practice. “We get to know each and every patient.” Cutting-edge technologies in dentistry offer a more personal and customized experience. By using extraoral and intraoral cameras (the intraoral camera is like a tiny wand), Dr. Moossy is able to show patients exactly where their issues are and prioritize by “fixing the worst first.” 4200 N. Lamar Blvd., Ste. 145, 512-459-5437; drmoossy.com

In addition to research and clinical studies lead by Dr. Daniel Friedmann—which range from studying the treatment of aging hands to stretch marks—Westlake Dermatology incorporates the newest dermatological and plastic surgery technologies into its practice. Dr. Greg Nikolaidis focuses on innovations he thinks will resonate with the Austin market, like the newly released injectable lip treatment, Volbella. A very fine filler designed to give patients more definition around the lips, Volbella lasts longer, and, explains Dr. Nikolaidis, “is really subtle... it has a natural aesthetic.” Multiple locations; westlakedermatology.com

GREATER GIFTS THESE FOUR BEAUTIFULLY CURATED BOUTIQUES ARE THE WHOLE PACKAGE FOR HOLIDAY SHOPPING. BY ERIN RUSSELL

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRUCE MALONE

If “time is your most precious gift,” then these elegant, locally owned shops should be top of mind this season. With their diverse and thoughtful inventory, you can knock off your gift list in no time. (And don’t forget to treat yourself. It will be our secret.)

AUDREY KELLY This West Lake Hills boutique is all about timeless elegance (3300 Bee Cave Road, Ste. 620, 512-3281208; audreykellyaustin.com). Owner’s Pick: Cashmere wraps from Johnstons of Elgin ($580) are “the ultimate luxury,” says Johanna Vernick. Most Unique Gift: The lightweight, water-resistant neoprene totes from Italy’s Save My Bag ($130) are a go-anywhere essential. Treat Yourself: The Cypres candle ($70) from Rigaud was the scent of Jackie Kennedy’s White House and Diana Vreeland’s Vogue offices. HACIENDA Adding global inspiration to the modern ranch lifestyle, Jessica Beattie’s Second Street staple offers a distinctive aesthetic—it also features its own line of Hacienda Collection products. (204 Colorado St., 512-436-8870; haciendaaustin.com). Most Unique Gift: The glam jewelry box from R&Y Augousti Paris ($240) is made from stingray leather.

Serving Austin since 1978, the 1,600-square-foot Menagerie is designed to offer shoppers a luxurious yet intimate experience.

THE MENAGERIE Owner Vickie Roan is the tour de force behind this Jefferson Square institution, hand-selecting every piece in the store (1601 W. 38th St., Ste. 7, 512-453-4644; themenagerie.com). Owner’s Pick: A diamondstudded, Baroque-style cross necklace with diamonds from Odelia ($2,825) brings meaning to everyday luxury, Roan says. Local Love: Whimsical hand-embroidered cocktail napkins from Kate Hersch’s August Morgan ($32 for four) make a fun stocking stuffer. Giving Back: Calaisio’s

hand-woven rattan salad bowl ($90) benefits the artisans’ villages in the South Pacific. Treat Yourself: Diamond earrings from Odelia ($5,000) feature a detachable chandelier.

RAVEN + LILY The modern, minimalist products at Raven + Lily are handmade by 1,500 marginalized global artisans who receive a fair wage (Domain Northside, 737-209-1072; ravenandlily.com). Owner’s Pick: Made by women in Los Angeles transitioning out of homelessness, the gold-leafed soy candles ($24) with a sweet bamboo and lemongrass scent are “the perfect holiday gift,” says founder and CEO Kirsten Dickerson. Giving Back: Every offering is philanthropic. One popular option: the tribal-print Ashoka Organic Travel Tote ($35), made by women who escaped from sex trafficking. Treat Yourself: Raven + Lily’s herbal soaps are handmilled in the Himalayan Mountains. Try a set with comforting lavender and honey oat scents ($18).

A FLAME REKINDLED AS AUSTIN WELCOMES ITS FIRST DIPTYQUE BOUTIQUE, THE LUXURY CANDLE COMPANY INTRODUCES ITS TEXTILE COLLECTION.

The new, updated 34 Collection from Diptyque includes, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Reflet Photophore ($160, fits all 34 Collection pillar candles); Essences Incensees (Rose de Mai) Eau de Parfum ($180 for 120 ml.); and, for the first time, textiles in the form of pillows ($90), totes ($58), and pouches ($45), each of which come in one of three prints: Legende (teal), Paladin (red), or Pretorien (purple).

Diptyque is synonymous with luxury candles, but the perfumery’s origins are rooted in textiles. Its first shop, which opened in Paris at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain more than 50 years ago, was a bazaar that showcased the fabric designs and travel finds of founders Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot, and Yves Coueslant. In honor of its origins, Diptyque has added fabric accessories to the latest edition of its 34 Collection, first introduced in 2014, which Myriam Badault, the brand’s creative director, calls “a red line throughout years.” The most unexpected element of the collection are its pillows, totes, and pouches. “Fabrics are really part of the brand aesthetic,” says Badault, who enlisted illustrator Charlotte Gastaut to create fresh takes on the original Légende, Prétorien, and Paladin patterns. According to Badault, the pieces are a tribute to the 1960s, “with a hint of modernity.” The collection also includes fragrances, a candle holder that boasts a customized mirror, and a glass candle holder that comes with three paper shades. The updated 34 Collection comes just as Austin get its first Diptyque boutique at Domain Northside. Says Donna DiDonato, the brand’s US managing director: “Austin is a thriving, creative city, an eclectic place that truly embraces the craftsmanship and innovation that diptyque stands for.” Domain Northside, 512-873-7680; diptyque.com

UNDER AUSTIN SKIES INSPIRED BY THE FAMOUS GLASS HOUSE IN SOUTH AFRICA, A CONTEMPORARY HOME CAPITALIZES ON THE HILL COUNTRY’S BREATHTAKING VIEWS.

In a private, West Austin community known for its traditional luxury estates, the Spanish Oaks home of Nandan and Jyostna Arora stands out, not only for its modern architecture but for its use of light and space. Each room in the 8,609square-foot home—even the laundry room—features a breathtaking view of the Hill Country. It also has a soundtrack: the rippling sounds of Barton Creek from more than 50 feet below. Now on the market for $2.9 million, the two-story contemporary home, built in 2013, was inspired by the work of South Africa’s Nico van der Meulen Architects, known for the stunning Glass House in Johannesburg. Jyostna Arora wanted a

wide-open environment with an abundance of natural light. Some of his favorite memories include “sitting by the large windows in comfortable chairs looking out at the Longhorns below the cliff, or watching it rain, or reading, curled up with a cup of tea enjoying the view,” he says. Wrap-around glass doors open up onto outdoor entertaining space, including an infinity-edge pool, spa, and fire pit, as well as ample balconies. When you want to feel more tucked away, the property features two casitas, each with their own entrance. Melissa Roberts and Bailey Perkins of Realty Austin, 512-228-1834; realtyaustin.com

SPACE GRAND OPENING The first floor of the new RH Gallery features the RH Interiors collection.

THE ART OF LIVING

THE STUNNING, MASSIVE NEW RH GALLERY AT DOMAIN NORTHSIDE WAS DESIGNED TO INSPIRE AND ELEVATE THE HOME RETAIL EXPERIENCE.

Among the new high-end stores at Domain Northside stands the four-story, 60,000-plus-square-foot RH Gallery, which, with its Venetian plaster exterior, cypress trees, and Juliet balconies looks like an inviting Italian villa. Designed by award-winning architect James Gillam of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger, RH Austin (formerly Restoration Hardware)

116  AUSTINWAY.COM

offers a floor dedicated to its RH Modern line of home furnishings and accessories that launched last year, along with the RH Contemporary Art collection showcasing emerging global artists; it also includes a full-service Design Atelier, the Ben Soleimani Rug Showroom, and a standout 11,000-square-foot rooftop park complete with banana palms,

sculptural evergreens, and topiary. We caught up with Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman, who came to Austin for the grand opening this fall. What do you want to inspire in clients with the magnitude and design of the new RH Gallery at Domain Northside? We want to create one-of-a-kind

retail environments that blur the lines between residential and retail, indoors and outdoors, physical and digital---spaces where we can showcase the comprehensive breadth of our offerings in dramatic and aspirational installations unseen before. Your opening-night party brought out a who’s who

SPACE GRAND OPENING clockwise from top left: With more than 60,000 square feet, the store is topped by a stunning rooftop patio; the RH Design Atelier offers custom services; a bedroom display designed to inspire.

How was the service experience crafted to help guide new customers through the space? What we do is create an environment that’s both inspiring and intuitive at the same time. It allows people to explore and experience

[the store] in a realistic and abstracted manner. That’s why we call it a gallery— there’s an ability to connect and see it in your space, but it’s abstracted from real life. We support that with the design team that helps people bring it to life in a personal way in their own homes. We want to inspire people first. Then our design consultant is there to understand the opportunities or problems that our guests are trying to solve... and help them imagine a way to amplify their space at home. OUT OF OFFICE WITH THE HOLIDAYS UPON US, AUSTIN IS ALL PLAY AND NO WORK UNTIL THE LEGISLATURE MEETS IN JANUARY. BY HELEN ANDERS

136 AUSTINWAY.COM

Now that Austin’s cluster of fall festivals is out of the way, we can finally get some work done around here. Right? Well, no. Because nobody’s at work. Ping a contact via e-mail, and an out-of-office reply immediately pops into your inbox. Phone calls zip straight to voicemail. Nobody works in December in Austin. The University of Texas is on break starting early in the month, and state government offices are mostly closed. Then, factor in the public school closings in mid-December and stack it

all against the holiday break, and suddenly a good chunk of the city is off ice skating at Whole Foods or spinning around under the lights of the Zilker Tree. So much for any infinitesimal hope of even a planarian-sized particle of productivity during the first two weeks of December. And once January arrives, we are too weary from New Year’s revelry (nobody revels like an Austinite) to go back to work quickly, so nobody answers e-mails then, either. Not until the Legislature convenes January 10.

In fact, our state legislators, who meet only for five months every other year (barring the dreaded special session), have probably influenced our approach to work more than any other group: You work hard, work quickly, eat a lot of steak, attend fabulous parties, and then take off more than a year to recover. That sounds about right. So really, there’s only one thing this time of the year is good for: holiday parties. Have one. And invite your boss. Rest assured, she’s not getting any work done, either.
