MoMent Shot here by Boston society photographer Michael Blanchard, international superstar Sting serenaded the Lenny Zakim Fund Benefit in November to support another one of his passions: international activism. We say, bravo!
Sting Along
A thick beard has softened the razor-sharp cheekbones, but there’s still more than a few rebellious bristles poking around in there. Come on. It’s Sting. When he took the stage at the Lenny Zakim Fund Benefit on November 12,
the 64-year-old musician did not speak many words. He didn’t need to. His voice, lyrics, and guitar strings told the story—the evolution from the raw, hard-edged lead singer of The Police to a multiple award-winning industry
10 bostoncommon-magazine.com
veteran, international activist, and father of six. The songs—“Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle”— crackled with soul. He had been invited to Boston to perform by his close friend, Bobby Sager, with whom he works on
many charitable causes. On this night, the mission was raising awareness and donations for the Lenny Zakim Fund, which supports emerging grassroots organizations. Zakim, the late executive director of the New England Region
of the Anti-Defamation League, believed that one person could make a difference in fighting injustice. Sting did not know Zakim, but had learned about him. “He and I,” he told the audience, “we would have got on.”

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF
All hAil spring! it’s a fresh beginning—and for us, too. Boston Common sports a whole new look and feel—color-popped pages and wildly fun stories, packed with the who, what, when, and where you need to know for living the Boston life to the max this spring and beyond. Dig in! Earmark your favorites, stuff a page or two in your pockets… We’ve broken it down into three portfolios: a sassy scene section, with city coverage ranging from bubbly champagne to bubble soccer, that guides across the hippest and hottest news about town; a chic style section, showcasing the very best fashion (hanley, Veronica Beard) and beauty trends (blue eye masks?) for spring; and space, which highlights Boston’s exceptional interior design, architecture, and real estate talent, as well as groovy home goods. And, since it wouldn’t be spring without blossoming gardens, we’ve also included a special feature on growing your best home garden ever. speaking of flowers and such, everything will be coming up roses at the pink Agenda Boston’s inaugural gala on March 19 at the Epicenter. Co-chaired by young professionals samantha strauss hanman, haley lamson, leah Culver, Julia Kenney, and laura Maloney, the pink Agenda aims to raise funds for breast cancer research and, ultimately, a cure. Boston Common is a proud media partner, and i am honored to be an attendee.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
February in boston never exactly feels like spring is just around the corner, but we all know it is. and this season is all about renewing, revising, and refreshing with new wardrobes, new routines, a new look. With our passion for all things luxury as radiant as ever, it was time to give ourselves a facelift. after 10 years of celebrating our city’s best and brightest, we can now look around and see all the great changes boston has experienced. From new residential buildings like Millennium tower, with new retail shops and restaurants, to an entirely new neighborhood in the seaport district (it was merely a parking lot when we first started), the city is
growing—and so are we. We are thrilled to unveil a fresh and updated look for 2016. inside this issue, you’ll find we’re aiming to respond to the way people are consuming information and content these days: they want it clear, compelling, and quick. to that end, we present a crisp new format, in a gorgeous, more modern look, with an emphasis on beautiful visuals and to-the-point editorials designed to keep you up to date on the people you need to know and the places you need to go. in other words, count on us to deliver the latest and greatest that boston has to offer. after all, everyone needs a little touch-up every now and again. (Can anyone say botox?)

HEEL THYSELF THE CURRIER MUSEUM OF ART STEPS IT UP BY SPOTLIGHTING THE STILETTO.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAY ZUKERKORN (HEEL); FLAT DESIGN (BACKGROUND)
BY JARED BOWEN
The Currier Museum of Art takes an audacious step in its newest show, Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe, on view through May 15. The exhibit chronicles the full history of heels in all their forms, functions—and nuanced meanings. “They’re certainly meant to be sexy and powerful,” says Currier assistant curator Samantha Cataldo. “But they’re also a little dangerous.” Among the 150 shoes on view, you’ll find many pairs that have framed famous feet. But this isn’t just any old Sex in the City survey. The show traces the whole story of heels from the 1700s to today—that men actually wore heels first (in 18th-century French courts); the way the steel used in skyscrapers is implemented in towering stilettos; how shoe architecture informs the gait of a Japanese geisha (even to this day); and more. Call it a well-heeled history. 150 Ash St., Manchester, NH, 603-669-6144; currier.org

Boston Calendar’s Jim Martinho and Sean O’Connor, photographed here at the Zakim bridge, bring the city’s hottest tickets—like annual music mega-festival Boston Calling (ABOVE AND LEFT)—to the people.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE DISKIN (BOSTON CALLING); KOLBY KNIGHT (MARTINHO)
Blame the Boston Tea Party. In 1773, the Sons of Liberty set the precedent for odd and curious occurrences on our New England turf. Now, three native Bostonians plan to expose their city to that living legacy by creating, chronicling, and curating wildly awesome, and often quirky, events. Sean O’Connor, Saurav Bhattacharyya, and Jim Martinho make up The Boston Calendar, a website and newsletter showcasing off-the-beaten-path parties, lectures, concerts—you name it. There’s the “How to Lose your Boston Accent” class in Back Bay, a Bavarian brass band parade on Spectacle Island, and a parking space pop-up party in Cambridge. “I started [Boston Calendar] because I had had enough of hearing friends complain that there weren’t cool things to do here,” says O’Connor, a former filmmaker, whose Craigslist job listing landed him writer Jim Martinho, the voice behind the site’s snappy personality. The duo, along with engineer Bhattacharyya, plan to expand the business across five cities, incorporating event production and using the site as a kind of Airbnb for venues. Even angels need a little help: At the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in December, Kendall Jenner and 44 other supermodels turned to Back Bay-based hair stylist Jana Rago for en vogue buns and “effortless” waves.

Angel Hair FRESH FROM THE VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW, HAIR GURU Jana Rago LOOKS AHEAD TO A STYLISH SPRING. by jessica bowne
Surrounded by ivory corsets, metallic feathers, knee-high gladiators, and more than a few worldfamous supermodels, Jana Rago wielded her blow-dryer like a warrior. The look—sun-kissed, wavy hair—is a piece of cake for Rago. Make that angel cake, for Salon Àcôté’s celebrity hairstylist was backstage at the epic Victoria’s Secret fashion show, styling Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima, Kendall Jenner, and 43 other angels. “This was a big dream of mine for a very long time,” says Rago, 34, of the December extravaganza. No wonder. Between the broadcast and its social media coverage, her hairstyling was seen by some 30 million viewers. Now, at her Back Bay salon, Rago—who’s also styled for Saint Laurent, Hermès, and Balmain— shares her favorite spring styles (effortless waves, perfect buns), accessories (embellished headbands and barrettes), and products (Oribe, Bed Head, and L’Oreal sprays) with her fellow Bostonians. Carrie On! country music sweetheart Carrie underwood rolls through town.
Count to 20, and do it slowly. In that amount of time, Carrie Underwood can hold the same note— while soaring through three different octaves. That’s just one of the many talents Bostonians can expect to see from the 33-year-old Okie when her Storyteller tour swoops through TD Garden on February 23 for her first-ever concert in Boston. Since exploding onto the scene after winning American Idol’s fourth season, in 2005, Underwood has set and broken records galore, all while snapping up seven Grammy awards and 17 Billboard awards. Her fifth album, Storyteller, featuring the hit singles “Smoke Break” and “Heartbeat,” debuted atop the Billboard country charts upon its October release. Now, the Storyteller concert will showcase Underwood in all her girl-next-door charm (with a fun dash of diva) in a 360-degreerotating circular stage right smack in the middle of the Garden—in full view to meet her Boston fans. The ultimate field trip! Winterline students travel all over the world, including to Estes Park, Colorado, home to the Rocky Mountain National Park headquarters, to learn wilderness first aid.
Late night scuba diving in Panama, wilderness first aid in the Rockies, cooking in Cambodia, building robots in Germany… and there’s still six countries to go, as well as some 96 more skills to learn. produces a nine-month gap year for high school graduates and college students. Its curriculum? Real life. Its classroom? The planet. Its purpose, via a non-curricular education, is to provide students a grade-A schooling on how to succeed in life—a goal that founder and serial entrepreneur Jeet Singh thinks colleges are getting
all wrong. “If the purpose of higher education is to provide young people with the tools to be enlightened and engaged citizens, help them to find fulfilling and productive careers, and to give them the skills to succeed in an increasingly competitive and globalized world, then it’s mostly been failing,” says Singh,

At the Sea Turtle Conservancy in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, Winterline students such as Grafton native Molly Shunney (right) learned about marine life and ecology.
“i am experiencing things and seeing places i never could have dreamed of.” —molly shunney whose inaugural “class” of 16 students (from the US, Mexico, Nepal, India, Colombia, and Canada) completes the program’s first year this May. “Winterline hopes to fill a gap in these areas that are poorly addressed in their university curriculum.” Molly Shunney, a Grafton native in the inaugural class, might agree. She certainly didn’t learn bungee jumping or dairy farming at the University of Massachusetts. But she did in Costa Rica. “This program is changing my life,” she says. “I am experiencing things and seeing places that I never could have dreamed of.”
For Singh, that’s the point. “It seemed to me that young people were sorely lacking in basic life skills, resilience, and awareness of the world, well into young adulthood,” he says. “It also seemed that it was possible to teach many of these capabilities in a focused way at this very formative time of life.” Shunney hopes to land a job in sports management after Winterline. Though, whatever she pursues, she credits Winterline for instilling the right attitude. “I have learned how to live in the moment. I have a sense of peace,” she says. “It’s a big world out there.” winterline.com

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? Let’s clear things up What is Unclaimed Property? Unclaimed Property is any fnancial asset (not including land or real estate) that has gone without customer-generated activity for an extended period of time.
Is this going to cost me money? No, this is a public service provided for FREE by the Ofce of the State Treasurer. There is no time limit to fle a claim, and all funds earn interest until claimed.
Examples include: » Savings and checking accounts » Unpaid wages or commissions » Uncashed insurance proceeds » Stocks, underlying shares or uncashed dividends » Customer deposits or overpayments » Certifcates of deposit » Credit balances and refunds » Money orders » Life insurance policies » Uncashed beneft checks » Accounts payable checks
Why does the state have my money in the frst place? Property becomes unclaimed when the asset holder is unable to contact the asset owner for three years (or ffteen years for traveler’s checks). The law requires business entities and others to review and turn over all unclaimed assets in their possession to the State on an annual basis. So... What’s the catch? Believe it or not, there isn’t one! Returning unclaimed property is a FREE service that every state provides. Helping you recover lost assets is our only goal. For us, money in your pocket is a job well done.

Zac’s Next Act Zac Posen adds yet another FashIon Feather to hIs celeb-rated cap as Broo Brothers’ new creatIve dIrector.

by samantha yanks
Known for his impressive squad of superfans, from actresses Christina Hendricks and Amy Schumer to models Naomi Campbell and Coco Rocha, Zac Posen has had a hit on every red carpet. Made with exquisite corsetry, couture techniques, and fin de siècle extras, the famous gowns of his eponymous line (which he launched to immense acclaim at the august age of 21) have come to represent the very essence of
formal-meets-fab glamour. Which is why some industry insiders were surprised when, last year, Posen was named creative director of Brooks Brothers, the 200-year-old all-American brand specializing in men’s suiting and preppy-casual womenswear. “Taking sportswear further while respecting the original codes of the house was a challenge, but I love the challenge,” says Posen of designing CONTINUED...

for Brooks Brothers. “It was an opportunity to redefine the classics, to keep tradition alive in quality, but bring a new breath of style to it. For me, Brooks Brothers needed an evolution, not a revolution.” That breath of style starts with the color palette. In his debut spring collection, the 35-year-old designer draws on punchy corals, mint greens, and sunny yellows (in tropical and nautical-stripe prints) inspired by the Hamptons, Nantucket, and Miami. “To me, there is a 1970s bohemian quality to those yellow, red, and blue tartans next to very floral prints,” he
says. It continues with the silhouettes, which are emblematic of easy dressing. “I think where our Zac Posen collection is more to-the-body, with Brooks Brothers, there’s a celebration of straightforward construction.” Americana sportswear may not be in the vernacular of his own fashion house, but Posen still sources his own DNA. “I wanted to bring a sense of casualness and pop to [the collection], which helped highlight the shapes and the cuts,” he says. “It’s creating a collection that has pop, but is still sophisticated.” A timeless combination. 75 State St., 617-428-7598; brooks brothers.com

Hip-Hop to it! The ’90s are back (and beTTer Than ever) in Guess’s fab collab wiTh A$AP Roc . by lisa ferrandino
Remix: Guess helps A$AP Rocky (top, far left) recall ’90s hip-hop fashion tropes in a new collection featuring (right, from top) a knit stripe pullover ($79), an oversize denim jacket ($198), and skinny-fit overalls ($188).
68 bostoncommon-magazine.com
As if being one of the world’s most popular hip-hop recording artists wasn’t enough, rapper and fashion darling A$AP Rocky has partnered with Paul Marciano to produce Guess Originals x A$AP Rocky, the debut collection from the Guess Originals initiative. The pieces are all vintage-cool with an edge, born from what A$AP calls “a personal collection” of quintessential ’90s fashion influences: oversize denim jackets, overalls, and in-your-face, logocentric stylings. “It’s taking archival designs and adding a
new twist,” says the 27-year-old. “I wanted to bring back that feeling and revisit that nostalgic time in hip-hop and urban culture when Guess was a household name.” With a denim-heavy focus, the throwback line has something for everyone, from denim trucker jackets for the guys to acid-washed high-rise shorts for the ladies. Guess even debuts its gue$$ logo (encased in the signature inverted triangle synonymous with the ’90s) as a nod to A$AP—and the past reprised. 80 Newbury St., 617-267-0746; guess.com

With tastemakers and trendsetters focused on exclusivity, this spring is all about the capsule collection. Three are at the very top of the list, and it all begins with Giorgio Armani (22 Newbury St., 617-2673200; armani.com). The designer takes modernity to the next level with a just-for-spring capsule collection in his New Normal line launched last year, offering a reinterpreted look at his own iconic styles. Newer, lightweight pieces offer a fresher take on spring’s
suiting options with checkered blazers, band-collared shirts, and a long flowing skirt in soft color palettes of gray, white, and navy. It’s all about rock ’n’ roll for après-ski favorite Moncler (Copley Place, 857-317-7619; moncler.com)—the brand launches an all-black men’s capsule collection celebrating The Rolling Stones’ 50-plus-year history. Our standout picks? Four leather jackets lined with the band’s famed tongueand-lips logo. Meanwhile,
Salvatore Ferragamo (Copley Place, 617-8594924; ferragamo.com) Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti joins Aquazzura designer Edgardo Osorio to harken back to the brand’s celebrated mid-century footwear. The Edgardo Osorio for Salvatore Ferragamo collection features 11 shoe styles, including rainbow wedges and winged sandals (ABOVE), reinterpreted from iconic Ferragamo designs from the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. Oh so retro!

WHEN IT COMES TO EYEBrOWS, lOvE THE ONES YOu’vE gOT— Or rE-CrEaTE THE ONES YOu WaNT.
Ah, the eyebrow. Not unlike breasts and bottoms, one minute bigger is better and the next a decidedly smaller set is the style du saison, as evidenced by spring’s haute couture runways. The back and forth can be confusing (even detrimental, when left to an overzealous, tweezer-happy hand), which is why we say it’s best to love the ones you have—and defer to an expert for everything else. Start here: The concierge at Bella Santé (38 Newbury St., 617-424-9930; bella sante.com) recommends an initial consultation, replete with arch assessment, before a series of appointments (wax, tweeze, or both) to keep your shape both consistent and naturallooking. Still feeling sparse? London-based Eyeko (eyeko.com) is slated to open in Boston this spring, bringing with them a slew of hocus pocus products, including their Brow Magic Brow Boost ($35), an all-in-one over-eye makeover that tints, defines, and adds volume. Voilà!

Late? Not on Nate Borgelt’s watch. At a young age, the Sotheby’s watches and clocks expert discovered an immense interest in timekeeping. “I had a fascination with watches in particular, due to their size and complexity,” recalls the Deerfield Academy and Connecticut College graduate. “This, connected with my interest in the historical aspect of measuring time, really led to a complete captivation with everything horology.” Fast forward: As a Sotheby’s specialist in Watches & Clocks, Borgelt is the go-to guy for East Coast watch lovers. He also fetched $52,000 for an Omega Constellation that was appraised at only $1,000— then again, its owner was Elvis Presley. Based out of Sotheby’s New York, Borgelt is travelling regularly to Boston this spring for appraisal meetings; he’ll also make sure to visit his parents on the South Shore—the stomping ground where it all began. sothebys.com

This spring, Nicole Hanley takes her cue from Cuba to bring island color to Boston.
Chartreuse, brick, and mahogany are not colors you’d imagine hitting it off; in Nicole Hanley’s world, they’re attached at the hip. Following a trip to Havana, the fashion designer unveiled her spring line of bold silhouettes bursting with pops of color. “We were so inspired by Cuba. We spoke with many artists, and this collection echoes those conversations,” says Hanley, 39. “Each one of our seasons is grounded by a visit to a special destination.” It’s only Hanley’s third season, but she is already touted as the next Tory Burch, landing a major partnership with Bloomingdale’s and opening her first boutique in New York. Her look has already caught like wildfire in Boston. At Bloomingdale’s in Chestnut Hill, her last collection (inspired by Antwerp) sold out within weeks. Now, she’ll host a meet-and-greet on February 27 to introduce the new, spring line to town, saying, “We can’t wait to meet more of our Boston customers!” Bloomingdale’s, The Mall at Chestnut Hill, 617-6306000; hanleynyc.com

A favorite of supermodel Gisele Bündchen and local philanthropist Ashley Bernon, Veronica Beard, a chic urban women’s ready-to-wear collection courtesy of namesakes Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard, is seducing Bostonians—
one signature dickey-collared blazer at a time. The sisters-in-law Beard duo has credited Boston as one of their top-selling markets since launching the line in 2010. After all, says Miele Beard, “Boston has the perfect jacket weather.” The Beards’ muse is a
make-believe, on-the-go woman (we presume her name is Veronica…). “She cares about having a look that combines elevated, sophisticated tailoring with comfort and versatility to take her through her every day,” says Swanson Beard. In their spring collection,
the designers’ personal faves include a print chiffon top (“flattering for day and evening,” says Miele Beard), “bulletproof” pants (“like Spanx”) and the Stretch Compact Cupro Peak Lapel blazer, whose versatility Swanson Beard praises: “You can
wear it to a board meeting or a cocktail party.” On March 1, devotees can enjoy an exclusive pop-up store at Cusp at Neiman Marcus (Copley Place, 617-536-3660) showcasing these and other color-burst spring favorites. veronicabeard.com

Big City Blues Who kneW that blue Would once again make it onto eyelids for spring? but can you rock this runWay trend on the streets?
Spring is coming: Cue the pop of color! This season, it’s electric—blue, that is. Amidst the hubbub of last year’s September shows, the hue (and all its variants) reigned supreme, from pastel eye masks at Chanel to smoky shadows at DVF. Marc Jacobs kept it “downtown” in a look created by NARS, with models sporting spots of deep turquoise on the eye’s inner corners. “It’s sophisticated, but she’s living her life, so it’s very real at the same time,” explains Founder and Creative Director François Nars. To re-create, use the label’s Dark Angel Velvet Shadow Stick ($29) all over the eyelid, Solomon Islands Eye Paint ($25) smudged on the inner corners, then Cressida DualIntensity Eyeshadow ($29). At the Missoni show, makeup artist Lucia Pieroni also went for a cooler vibe with bright swaths of cyan, but suggests keeping the rest of the face clean off the catwalk. To re-create the look, try lining both lashes then smudging with Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre in Ocean Light ($36). NARS, Saks Fifth Avenue, Prudential Center, 617-9375262; narscosmetics.com. There’s high-tech underwear, weatherproof outerwear, and lord knows what other advanced forms of children’s apparel. Then, there’s Caroline Leed’s brand-spankingnew Smiling Button collection: pure, simple, clean. “I want kids to be kids,” says Leed. For her, that means sassy white pinafore dresses, gold tiaras, and smiley-face onesies. “All of my pieces are meant to be played in.” So go ahead, dig in the dirt, play house, bake cookies— Smiling Button’s all-cotton threads can take it. Leed, a 23-yearold Back Bay entrepreneur straight out of college, launched the line (all made in the USA) just one year ago. “I was always confident in my vision,” she says, and her gut was right— boutiques like Back Bay’s Calypso, Nantucket’s The Chanticleer, and Andover’s The Lanam Club were soon hosting pop-up stores. Leed’s next showing is a March 19–20 trunk show at Mulberry Road boutique (128 Newbury St., 617-859-5861; mulberryroad.com). Full-on play all day! smilingbutton.com

audi debuts the 2017 q7, a family-friendly suV that punches aboVe its weight. by robert cocuzzo
“Make room!” So must’ve said Audi’s execs when the luxury car company molded the first clay models for its 2017 Q7. With three rows of plush leather seats, this midsize SUV packs all the spacious functionality of a station

wagon, but ditches the dated wood paneling in favor of strong, elegant lines. Its family-friendly design extends beyond its no-nonsense interior and into its sophisticated safety technologies, which can command the vehicle to
stop on a dime. But this 333-horsepower chariot isn’t just for soccer moms pinballing their rug rats from dance recital to piano practice. Flip into Dynamic mode and the Q7 grips switchbacks like it’s climbing a rope in gym
class. It goes from 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds—as fast as some Maseratis—and is tough enough to conquer the off-road, let alone Mass Ave potholes. So, put on your floaties—the Audi Q7 is about to make waves in your carpool.

MEGA WATTS THE HIGH-VOLTAGE, UP-DOWN-AND-DURABLE STAR OF THIS SPRING’S SUPER-MOVIE SEQUEL THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT, NAOMI WATTS HAS BEEN KICKING BUTT ON-SCREEN—AND OFF—FOR 25 YEARS. AND WINNING. by DAVID HOCHMAN photography by WARWICK SAINT

BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM
I
t is one of those frigid New York City mornings when you can practically breathe icicles and the only sane place to be is by the fire with a mug of hot cocoa. Naomi Watts is undaunted. She and her two young boys—Sasha, 7, and Kai, 6, the little blondies from her 11-year relationship with actor Liev Schreiber—are braving the elements like an intrepid band of Arctic explorers: Parkas with fur collars, wool beanies down around the eyebrows, scarves over turtlenecks over base layers. The trials urbanites must endure for an outing to Whole Foods! Watts looks relaxed and happy even as a paparazzi photographer trails them back to their Tribeca apartment. The actress has not had much time lately for routine errands. Between this year and last, her name has appeared on eight different movies, including some of the most acclaimed projects of her career. Birdman, While We’re Young, and St. Vincent were fêted by critics and honored on the awards circuit, and Watts is now a full-fledged sci-fi icon as well. As the abused wife turned rebellion leader in the popular Divergent series, Watts returns for a second time as the butt-kicking antagonist, Evelyn Eaton, in Allegiant (scheduled for release on March 18). The actress joined the massively popular franchise, based on the YA novels by Veronica Roth, after killing off Kate Winslet’s character in last spring’s Insurgent. “We needed someone who could play brittle and damaged on the outside and yet carry immense power under the surface, and Naomi delivers that magical mix and makes it look effortless,” says Doug Wick, the series co-producer. “She’s also someone who’s just, you know, great to hang out and gossip with.” The part is a departure for Watts, who at this stage in her career had not quite pictured herself heading a rat-a-tat army in a dystopian walled-in version of Chicago. “It’s something of a stretch but in terms of character, Evelyn is someone I can appreciate,” Watts says. “She is a survivor and she’s made the most of her experience despite a bunch of twists and setbacks.” At 47, Watts gets major points herself for endurance. She struggled for years to find steady footing in Hollywood after a childhood that she describes as “less than consistent.” Born in seaside Shoreham, England, and reared there and in Wales, Watts was 4 when her mom, an antiques dealer and designer, split from her dad, a road manager and sound engineer for Pink Floyd. voice and manic laughter can be heard in the background on the album Dark Side of the Moon, died of an apparent heroin overdose when Naomi was just 7. “I wish I could say otherwise but I don’t have any clear memories of my father,” Watts says. (The rock gene lives on nevertheless. Watts recently posted a shot of herself backstage with David Bowie to mark the singer’s passing in January.) Watts and her older brother, Ben, a photographer who lives near her in Manhattan, relocated to Australia with their mother and stepdad when Naomi was 14. “Mum was young and did not have much of a plan,” Watts says. “I think there’s a combination of grit and perseverance and tricking yourself into believing things are okay even if you’re not getting the results you want— that’s what I learned from her. Even if you’re being batted around, you keep going. It’s basic human determination.” Watts caught the acting bug after seeing the movie Fame at a young age, and took drama classes in Australia before heading off to Japan for a modeling stint in her late teens. Success was spotty at first. She landed a part in an Australian romance, For Love Alone, in 1986, but the roles that followed were of the type that now makes for amusing late-night YouTube viewing. When she was around 18, Watts, wearing ’80s hair bows and shoulder pads, shot a Tampax commercial for Australian TV. But even that was a bridge to somewhere. “I was fresh out of school and wasn’t thinking, This is so humiliating,” she says. “I was thinking, Fantastic! A paycheck. Now I can buy a Mini Cooper and drive myself to auditions rather than taking three buses and a train.” In one of her acting classes, Watts met another rising talent who would soon burst onto the global stage and help open doors for her. Nicole Kidman was a friend and early mentor and the name above the marquee in Flirting, the 1991 boardingschool romance that was Watts’s first real break in Hollywood. “Nic was incredibly generous in introducing me to people and showing me that an Aussie girl from around the corner can make it big,” Watts says. But as Kidman continued to soar with blockbusters like Far and Away and Batman Forever, Watts, who was now living full-time in LA, scraped the barrel with gigs like the TV movie Bermuda Triangle and the straight-to-video train wreck Children of the Corn IV. She recalls that period as a time spent “driving 45 minutes deep into the San Fernando Valley to wait as six actors auditioned before me, only to have to sit in two more hours of traffic on the 405 freeway coming home.” None of it made Watts give up. “I would play mental games with myself,” she says. “Rather than dwell on why I didn’t have this role or that opportunity, I would
say, ‘Well, I do have a SAG card and I do have an agent and I am perfectly fine until the right something comes along.’” That something would be Mulholland Drive. Even after more than a decade in the business, Watts was an unknown in David Lynch’s 2001 noir mystery. She plays a wide-eyed Midwestern starlet new to LA who puts aside her dreams of fame to help an amnesiac woman figure out her true identity. Major surrealism ensues. There are torrid lesbian scenes, a frightening cowboy, and a miniature elderly couple that comes crawling out of a mysterious box. Moviegoers went “Huh?” but the film became an instant cult classic. Agents started chasing Watts down with scripts. Big directors wanted to meet her. Children of the Corn V would have to wait. Watts received her first Academy Award nomination two years later as a recovering drug addict struggling to live a normal suburban existence in 21 Grams. She followed that with standout performances in the offbeat comedy I Heart Huckabees and opposite Sean Penn in The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Watts played muse to Hollywood’s most famous gorilla in Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake and earned another Oscar nod for 2012’s The Impossible, based on a true story about a mother swept up by the 2004 tsunami that struck Thailand. Horror fans loved her in the sleeper hit The Ring and its sequel. “Even if you feel completely connected to the material it often doesn’t go the way you think it will,” Watts says. “It’s no different than anything else in life. You can’t calculate how things will turn out. All you can do is try to have fun, push yourself to do well, be with people you love being with, and stay in the moment. The rest is basically out of your hands.”
B
ack inside her warm apartment, Watts is enjoying a rare hiatus from early call times and long days on location. She was up early to meditate, then fixed breakfast for the kids, caught up on phone calls, and may sneak in a workout before turning to a couple scripts her agent wants her to consider. Watts is on the board of the New York Academy of Art and for a decade has been a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for a program helping to raise awareness of AIDS issues. Still, her schedule today is blissfully open. “My biggest challenge,” she says, “might be figuring out whether to read the boys one of the Narnia books or Harry Potter.” Watts and Schreiber try as much as possible not to be working at the same time so that one of them can focus on parenthood exclusively. They never married, but they have vowed to keep things as stable as possible for Sasha and Kai.
Watts recently purchased a large-scale painting by British artist Harland Miller. It is part of a series in which he reimagines covers of vintage Penguin books. This one is a made-up volume titled Love Stretch Me No Longer in This Rough World. Those words hit a chord the minute Watts saw the piece in the gallery, she says. Before she and Schreiber got together, Watts dated Heath Ledger for several years. Asked if coupling is harder when both people are well-known, Watts does not hesitate. “Relationships are hard whether you’re famous or not,” she says. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have to work on it. Being an actor doesn’t change anything. I’m sure it’s the same if you’re a doctor or a couple of lawyers. You have high-pressure jobs, lots of hours, stresses that come at you unexpectedly—and you have to figure out how to be present in the midst of it all.” Watts knows her kids are about to burst through the door and make the day all about mommy time, which is more than fine with her. Her schedule is about to go bonkers again. Watts costars with Schreiber later this year in The Bleeder about the life of heavyweight fighter Chuck Wepner (the film shot in New York so both actors could be at home). In June, she appears opposite Oliver Platt in the psychological thriller Shut-In. She recently wrapped production on The Book of Henry, a crime drama about a precocious boy who falls for the daughter of the New York City Police Commissioner. Watts plays the boy’s single mom. She also has another Divergent installment ahead—Ascendant hits theaters in 2017. Watts is reluctant to say this is the culmination of everything she struggled to achieve on those drives out to the Valley. “This isn’t the life I imagined,” she says. “In many ways, it’s far, far better, and yet I look at what’s possible—I mean, look at Frances McDormand or Helen Mirren or, come on, Meryl Streep—and I go, ‘Okay, there’s still a lot of room to grow and improve.’” The trick is to do that and still appreciate what you have. When Watts was making King Kong in the early 2000s, she paid a visit to Fay Wray, the legendary star of the original 1933 film. Watts and Peter Jackson and a few others crammed into Wray’s tiny book-lined apartment on New York’s Upper West Side as Wray, who was in her 90s and near the end of her life, told story after story about a career that spanned 57 years. “Something beautiful happened near the end,” Watts says, her voice growing soft. “She leaned over and whispered in my ear. The specific words are a blur now but the feeling was that she was passing the baton. It wasn’t from her to me specifically but more like her generation making room for a new one. ‘It’s your turn. It’s your moment.’ Since then, I always think, you have to be awake to that.”

MESDAMES ET MESSIEURS! the 2016 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie IN GENEVA unveils the year’s most EXQUISITE watches from the industry’s Swiss masters. BY ROBERTA NAAS
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CARTIER. OPPOSITE PAGE: COURTESY OF VACHERON CONSTANTIN, PARMIGIANI FLEURIER, PIAGET, AND JAEGER-LECOULTRE
A deft blend of beauty and technology, the playful Cartier Panthères et Colibri Calibre 9915 MC watch ($183,000) offers an artful tableau on its dial: a diamond-adorned panther at rest with a hummingbird nearby. When the winding crown is pressed, the scene comes to life: A baby panther (hidden behind its mother) peeks out as though to chase the golden bird. Fun, yes—but functional too, for the hummingbird’s position on the dial indicates the power reserve of the new 367-part movement. Enshrining it all is an 18k white-gold case set with 314 brilliant-cut diamonds, while mama panther herself is bejeweled with 270 brilliant-cut diamonds, a pear-shaped emerald eye, and black lacquer spots. Vacheron Constantin unveils its new Fabuleux Ornements collection of timepieces. An in-house-made, ultrathin 117-part movement powers each watch in this series celebrating the decorative arts of different cultures. This version ($135,000), based on Chinese embroidery, is crafted in 18k gold and features a jade cloisonné dial with hand-engraved leaves of mother-of-pearl and pink opal surrounded by 145 round-cut diamonds. Just 20 pieces will be made. Shreve, Crump & Low, 39 Newbury St., 800-225-7088; vacheron-constantin.com The complex Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Tourbillon 1950 ($135,000) features an in-housedesigned and -built 60-second tourbillon escapement and an ultrathin PF 517 movement that houses the world’s lightest tourbillon cage. The gray mother-of-pearl dial has a fine cut at 7 o’clock (a nod to the time, 7:08, when the founder of the brand was born) that offers a view of the tourbillon aperture. Neiman Marcus, Copley Place, 617-536-3660; parmigiani.ch In honor of the 85th anniversary of the famed Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso (with a case that turns over to offer a second dial), the brand unveils a host of new Reversos, including the One Duetto Moon ($11,500). Powered by a manually wound mechanical movement, the watch displays two faces: One side offers the moon phase via a mother-of-pearl lunar disk; the other side is a classic time indication of hours and minutes. FOR THE LADIES: STUN THEM WITH substance
For the past few years, premier watch brands attending the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva have given greater face time to the fairer sex when it comes to mechanical-watch offerings (savvy women, of course, also care about what’s under the hood). In response, a host of brands are giving women timepieces with substance, blending state-of-the-art technology with beautiful design to create a complete
package that speaks to both form and function. In the watch industry over the past half-decade, fans, fanatics, and connoisseurs have witnessed the term métiers d’art take on a life of its own, and this year is no exception. In fact, several brands have gone above and beyond when it comes to designing watch dials as mini canvases—the results are stellar masterpieces that, in another form, could easily grace art-museum walls.
Piaget also looks to the night sky with the new Limelight Stella ($29,700), the brand’s first complication created just for women. Powered by a mechanical movement, it features a diamond-adorned moon-phase indication at 12 o’clock as well as an aperture base and case bedecked in diamonds. But the watch is driven by serious technology: The astronomical moon depiction requires a mere one-day correction after 122 years. Royal Jewelers, 58 Main St., Andover, 978-475-3330; piaget.com

It is the year of the pilot’s watch at IWC Schaffhausen, and the new, 46mm Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” ($32,400) is a grand salute to the theme. It is powered by a mechanical movement and offers an annual calendar with day and month displays, a power-reserve indicator, and a small-seconds counter at 9 o’clock. The IWC-manufactured caliber houses high-tech materials, as well as an 18k gold rotor. Just 250 pieces will be made. Royal Jewelers, 58 Main St., Andover, 978-475-3330; iwc.com In a return to ever-classic yellow gold, Audemars Piguet unveils the newest Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar ($95,700). A balance of beauty and function, the watch houses a mechanical movement with 374 parts, and offers an astronomical moon indication so precise that it won’t need an adjustment for more than 125 years. FOR THE GENTLEMEN: GO RETRO ELEGANT!
SIHH 2016 saw a host of innovative timepieces for men that offered masterly design but also emphasized simplicity and refinement. With the move away from the big and bold watches of a decade ago, many brands exhibited either ultrathin or clean, classically sophisticated pieces. But this isn’t your grandfather’s understated wristwear. While some of the sportier watches were made chic with rose and (retro!) yellow

gold, others have taken on an edgier look—and, equipped with highly crafted calibers that pack a punch, an extra dose of durability. No matter the style, 2016’s models are about versatility, offering small complications and additional features (calendars, multi-timers, chronographs, and more) geared for the guy whose watch is a consistent partner in both his work and play.

Baume & Mercier continues the saga of its Clifton collection with the Clifton Chronograph Complete Calendar watch in steel ($4,990). A statement in elegance and sophistication, this automatic timepiece combines a chronograph function with perpetual calendar indications of date, month, day or night, and moon phases. This year, Montblanc unveils an all-new collection, the 4810 line, in honor of the altitude (in meters) of the brand’s namesake Alpine mountain. The newest, stainless-steel 4810 TwinFly Chronograph 110 Years Edition ($6,900) is a flyback chronograph, meaning that it allows the wearer to time an event, stop, reset, and restart the chronograph with just one press on the pusher at 4 o’clock. Complex to build, it is an exceedingly advanced chronograph that allows timing of multiple events at one time. It is powered by a self-winding movement that also offers dual time indication and 72 hours of power reserve. Just 1,110 pieces will be made. Copley Place, 617-267-7348; montblanc.com
Richard Mille unveils the RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat skeletonized watch ($85,000), which houses an all-new movement that is as thin as it gets (3.6mm). For strength, the baseplate and bridges are constructed of Grade 5 titanium, and the metal numerals mounted on titanium rails are filled with LumiNova for extra readability. richardmille.com For more watch features and expanded coverage, go to bostoncommon-magazine .com/watches-and-jewelry

SWISS FASHION HOUSE A RIS HONORS ITS ARCHITECTURAL INSPIRATIONS WITH A NEW BOSTON BOUTIQUE.
Albert Kriemler revels in every detail of Akris’s posh Newbury Street boutique: the glass elevator, the trapezoidal side table, the bleached amber-wood cabinetry. The spacious, three-story space is structurally complex, and, for Kriemler, the fashion house’s creative director and the grandson of Akris founder Alice KriemlerSchoch, it’s also architecturally inspiring. “I love architecture,” says Kriemler, 55. “It tells a story. All of my boutiques tell a story.” At the newly renovated Boston boutique—which relocated from literally across the street—Akris customers can expect a ground floor devoted entirely to accessories. From there, the glass elevator escorts guests to floors dedicated to both the trousers, dresses, and print jackets from Akris’ Punto offerings, as well as the full Spring collection from the namesake line. A cushy mahogany leather armchair and sofa welcome nonshoppers, too, as does a signature Cherner chair by CONTINUED...
The sturctural whimsy in Akris’s new Back Bay boutique, which features three spacious floors of its ultra-luxe wares, bespeaks the design house’s signature aesthetic: strong, architectural lines softened with Continental elegance.

“I LOVE ARCHITECTURE. IT TELLS A STORY. ALL MY BOUTIQUES TELL A STORY.”—ALBERT KRIEMLER
American architect and designer Norman Cherner. Architecture has always been a major inspiration for Akris, and Boston in particular has been an essential model for Kriemler. “It was our very first boutique [in the States],” he says. “I can see here like nowhere else how much Akris has evolved in 20 years.” Now, he might bring some of Boston back home to Switzerland—on a recent visit, Kriemler met with students from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and Architecture, as well as Swiss architects Emanuel Chris and Christoph Gantenbein, to discuss a virtual case study of Akris’ headquarters in St. Gallen, for which Kriemler is considering a renovation. “Who knows?” he says. “Maybe one day some of these great ideas will be part of a new Akris building.” For now, Akris devotees can look forward to exploring the new Back Bay space and indulging in the spring fashion. Even that is architecturally accented; Kriemler collaborated with Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto to create a collection with minimalist lines that develop into punchy geometric details—cut-out circles, translucent squares, sketched triangles. Kriemler expects the Boston woman to love it. “This area, in so many ways, fits us perfectly: clean, quiet, understated, and intellectual,” he says. “Just like Akris.” 29 Newbury St., 617-536-6225; akris.ch

The master bath flows water in from the property’s well and out through the owners’ own sewer system.
Wooden beams were repurposed for the home’s interior supports and reprocessed for the ceilings and floors.
Tying the home together, local architect Steven Baczek’s clean, modern design is punctuated by carefully deployed pops of color.
Positive EnErgy Two green champions go for The gusTo wiTh a 100-percenT susTainable dream home.
Over the years, Don and Amy Bowen reckon they’ve owned almost a dozen homes. But this, the 2,400square-foot modern house they just built in Hamilton, surpasses anything they ever imagined they could attain. “I’ve dreamt about building something like this since I was a teenager,” says Don, who was deeply disturbed by the energy crisis in the 1970s. The three-bedroom, one-story property sits on seven acres, where a typical day involves spotting deer, fox, owls, or a red-tailed hawk in the backyard meadow, not to mention a fierce sunset. What is not so typical is that everything on the property is sustainable. “I mean everything,” says Don, a civil engineer and principal of local engineering firm Meridian Associates. “The heat, the water, the electricity are all net zero emissions. We literally have no utility bills.” Water? The Bowens have their own well (and their own sewer and disposal systems). Heat? They installed an air source heat pump. Finally, for the big one, electricity, the Bowens hired Solect Energy
(solect.com) to place 52 solar panels on the roof with a 15-kilowatt system. “We overproduce electricity in the summer months,” says Don. But make no mistake, no utility bills do not mean no luxury. A walk-in shower, spacious deck, highend kitchen, and fire pit highlight the modern residence, designed by Reading architect Steven Baczek (stevenbaczekarchitect .com). Recycled granite was used to build countertops, repurposed glass sourced for the bathrooms, and wooden beams reprocessed for flooring and ceilings. Heavily fortified Shuco aluminum provided by Yaro (yarowindows.com) was chosen for the windows, producing a thermal rating of R-7.5 (well exceeding the average of R-3.25), a critical element for containing heat or cool air indoors. “Every decision was carefully weighed,” says Don, who opted for no-mow ornamental grass to keep maintenance demands at a minimum. “We call it smart living. It is the most luxurious home we have ever lived in.”

How do you translate a lifetime of color and texture into a rug collection? Ask Boston-based interior designer Eric Haydel, whose collaboration with Dover Rug & Home, titled Carnival, is all the rage in rugs this season. The designs, which include the beaded Masquerade, striped Second Line, and abstract Streetcar, were inspired by Haydel’s vibrant childhood in Louisiana and the Southern textile tradition of bold patters and pops of color—perfect for spring. “As designers, our life experiences are the inspiration for what we create,” says Haydel, 31, the current president of the
New England chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. That sense of fun and whimsy runs through every thread of the 8x10-foot and 9x12-foot hand-knotted silk and wool rugs (different sizes available upon request). Haydel knew from the moment he began working with Dover Rug’s owner, Mahmud Jafri, and his son Hasan that the relationship was a good fit. “Mahmud’s dream has resulted in the beauty and integrity that is Dover Rug & Home,” says Haydel. “How could I not jump on board with that?” Pricing upon request. 390 Stuart St., 617-266-3600; doverrug.com

Talk about a two-run homer—as a guest at the newly revamped Hotel Commonwealth, you can enjoy not only the luxury hotel’s expanded amenities and updated décor, but also its super-select access to the Boston Red Sox. In December, the Commonwealth, adjacent to Fenway Park, completed a two-year, $55 million renovation and expansion, remodeling its original 145 rooms and lobby plus adding, in a new wing, 96 rooms and suites and 6,000 square feet of event space, including a 2,000-squarefoot outdoor terrace. As befits the official hotel of the Red Sox, the all-star addition is the 660-squarefoot Fenway suite, which sports Sox memorabilia (a retired scoreboard, vintage baseball cards and photos) and a balcony with original ballpark seats and a headon view of the namesake stadium. According to GM Adam Sperling, the Red Sox partnership—and its special perks—brings guests closer to the hotel’s home in Kenmore Square: “Being able to go [atop] the Green Monster or on the field for batting practice [helps] connect guests” with the area’s heritage. One massive clue that you’ve made it: friends and strangers alike burning your candles, carrying your totes, decorating their homes like yours. Of course, when your candles come in divine scents like black hibiscus, when your totes are made of glamorous, color-blocked leather or versatile cotton webbing— indeed, when your wares define an entirely new aesthetic of casual luxury, success is easier to come by. Such is the case with India Hicks, a former fashion model and bona fide English royalty (she was a flower girl in Princess Diana’s wedding). Now, the English are coming to town (again), when Hicks, who wrote the interior decorating bible Island Style, visits the Boston Design Center to unveil her lifestyle brand’s new spring collection. In addition to her home wares and accessories, Bostonians can also expect Hicks’ famous loquaciousness (some past gems: “I am an absolute shit cook”; “I am pretty good at changing a tire”; “I have never been known to turn down chocolate soufflé”). Which is fitting, since Hicks’ coralhued carry-ons and head-swooning room fragrances all come with a backstory—often royal, but always refreshingly human. A garden in the city? A novel idea, we know. But, it’s oh-so-easy to build for yourself. We called on renowned local landscape designers to help us scour both city and country in search of greater Boston’s most bloomin’ cool gardens. Here are our top selections from each category—a rooftop in the city and a front and backyard (for those lucky suburbanites with acres of space)—as well as guidelines for re-creating them with the year’s en vogue garden trends. Like fashion and food, gardening has its seasonal crazes—this year, koi fish,

front yard of this Chestnut Hill home is way more fun than its primary function as a guest parking area might suggest. “That is exactly the point,” says Doug Jones, principal of Boston’s LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects. “We wanted to create a space that has many uses for the family.” Designing a driveway may sound straightforward, but that’s not how Jones says his firm approaches a project.
“We respect the history of a space, but we want to reflect modern living.” In this case, the client, a couple with young children, wanted to maximize outdoor activity and minimize maintenance. The lawn is framed by Japanese pachysandra, while three Stewartia trees and Winter Gem boxwood evergreen shrubs brighten up the retaining area. Boston ivy and boxwood hedge cover the stately front of the house.

“The look is elegant, quiet, and private,” Jones says—lacrosse games notwithstanding. 617-4266475; leblancjones.com Raise the Roof When Foliaire landscape designer Matt Stein picks up the phone these days, he is prepared with a bevy of options. “Clients want multi-functionality,” he says. “Entertainment space, some shade, privacy, variety of plants, modular furniture... the works.” Add to that a vegetable
garden for the owner of this Beacon Hill rooftop. “She is a super-modern, forward-thinking community leader,” Stein says, “and deeply involved with urban farming.” So Stein created a series of vegetable planters (“She grows tomatoes, herbs, eggplants, and mixed greens”), cedar lattices strengthened by a steel frame and copper (“The lattices work as walls, offering complete privacy”), a hidden drip-irrigation system, and
interchangeable plant pots. “The owner can easily switch out the planters every season,” says Stein. “Tulips are grown in the spring, mandevilla vines in the summer, mums in the autumn.” By all accounts, the roof space fulfills a range of requirements, including a contemporary sensibility Stein is seeing more of with urban gardens: “There is definitely a shift from classic to modern design.” 617-357-5255; foliaire.com

As if one penthouse weren’t enough, a real-life king is scooping up two top-tier, rooftop condos at the new Four Seasons Hotel Boston. Since the chi-chi Dalton Street property will not be complete until 2017, said king can customize the space to his extravagant liking. The 60-story building will be the highest in Boston and will offer two restaurants, two lounges, and a health club and spa—oh, and cost $700 million to build. The double penthouse sale ought to brighten up the balance sheet a tad.
How lucky cAn you geT? This is surely the question this gorgeous, literary Back Bay scribe must have asked herself. Her frst book, based on her royal Middle eastern heritage, landed a big-name publisher. Then, Hollywood came knocking with a ferce movie rights contract and an A-list director. word is that carrie Mulligan is up for the starring role… but so is the hotshot author herself, who auditioned as well.
superhero WOW! This brilliant entrepreneur sold his biotech company for gazillions of dollars, and how did he celebrate? Not by buying a swanky second house. Not by racking up an outlandish tab at his country club. No, this gentleman shared the wealth by walking miles and miles all around the city and handing out generously credited supermarket gift cards to every homeless person he saw. Now that’s a star.

does not begin to describe this passionate hotel concierge. Just out of college and a few months on the job, she’s booked a private plane to take off within an hour of the assignment—and had it flled with hundreds of longstemmed roses and a case of Veuve clicquot. she scored day-of front row tickets to the much-sought-after Hamilton musical on nyc’s Broadway for a master of the universe who also politely asked for (and got, natch) a top-of-the-line stretch limo for the round-trip excursion. lastly, she managed to wrangle a chimp as a special surprise for a fve-year-old’s birthday party. needless to say, her veteran colleagues are green with envy.
la vie... Rive Gauche! The subject of several documentaries, this designer counted gaggles of the silver screen’s most legendary glamazons as his muses: Loulou de la Falaise, Betty Catroux, Laetitia Casta, Marisa Berenson, Paloma Picasso, Catherine Deneuve. Now his Left Bank fashions are headed to Boston in the form of a wildly ornate and embellished boutique in an oh-so-posh space in the Back Bay.
Two bigwig Boston restaurateurs are taking their secret sauce recipe for success out west. As in out West. As in La La Land. The first culinary mogul already has seven national locations under his belt as well as an expansive frozen food business. The second gastronomic guru boasts six locations in Greater Boston. Both of these restaurant czars are revered for attracting Super Bowl heroes and TV personalities as well as Harvard professors as regulars. Their guest list is sure to grow bigger (and even more famous) in Tinseltown.
